Chapter 27-Failed.
"YOU..... You are fired." His eyes depicted indignation when he spat those words.
"Chachu. I'm fine." Aakash murmured slowly.
"Yes, small shot." He smiled at the boy
"Wait, I'll take you to your room." Nakul calmly whispered in his ears before carrying him upstairs. Ambar quietly followed them.
When Nakul reached Aakash's room, he shut the door on Ambar's face, making her flinch a bit.
He placed him on the bed and pulled out a first aid box from the drawer.
Then he bandaged the wound carefully and covered him up with the comforter.
"I'm alright. It wasn't Amy's fault." Aakash tried to tell him the truth but Nakul was not in the mood to listen.
"Shush. Sleep." Nakul patted the boy before he closed his eyes.
All this while, Ambar was standing outside his room, unable to stop weeping.
Nakul quietly stepped out before locking the door.
"Stop with drama." He snapped angrily at her.
"I...." She was again interrupted by him.
"Not a word..." He warned.
"You..... I kept on ignoring all of your mistakes till now but that was my biggest fault to do so. On the first place, I shouldn't have appointed a careless and an irresponsible girl like you for my nephew. Trusting you with him was a blunder." His voice was cold and harsh.
"I'm sorry." She sobbed.
"Pack your bags. Driver will drop you home and you can come to the office, tomorrow. I'll clear your dues." He sounded rough.
"I.... Can I meet him before I leave?" She requested and this time, he didn't say anything, instead he just glared at her in vexation.
He once again closed the door on her face as he stepped inside
She broke down clutching herself.
His every word had send daggers to her heart.
She regretted for being reckless around the boy. She should have been vigilant. Her only job was to look after him and she felt that she had failed miserably.
When Nakul clumped towards his small shot. He planted a light peck on his forehead.
He was frustrated on himself more than the girl.
He blamed himself too for leaving his small shot alone.
"Chachu." Aakash stirred.
"Hmm." He raked his hairs.
"I'm sorry, I shouldn't have...".
"Just rest. Do you need anything?" He queried interrupting him.
"Amy." Aakash replied.
Nakul sighed before kissing his forehead again.
"I'll get your milk." Nakul said.
"Please tell Amy. She knows, how I like my milk." Aakash stated while Nakul mentally groaned.
Once he was in the corridor, he walked towards the kitchen to find Ambar pouring the milk into the glass.
"What are you still doing here?" He asked her.
"It's the time for Aakash to have his milk." Ambar murmured.
"That's not your duty anymore." He pointed out.
"This was never my duty... It is what I like doing." She smiled before adding the chocolate syrup in the milk.
"By the way, I have packed my bags." She informed him and he stood speechless.
"I'm very grateful to you for appointing me for this job. I really adore the boy and I'd never intend to cause any harm to him." She said as she kept on stirring the content of the milk.
Nakul still didn't open his mouth but just stood there till she handed him the glass.
"CHACHU." Aakash shouted.
Nakul dropped the glass in panic and started rushing to the room.
Ambar ran after him.
He moved upstairs and unbolted the heavy wooden door. The sight in front which he witnessed, shuddered him completely.
The curtains and windowpane had caught fire and Aakash was trapped in the balcony as he was constantly yelling for help.
Nakul's fear took the hold of him and he stood paralysed in his place. He caught his head in his hands as he got reminded of that accident which occurred years ago.
"Chachu." Aakash cried for him.
He was frozen on his spot as the memory got stung in his mind where he felt to be in Aakash's place at that moment.
Ambar entered the room after him and screeched with horror.
"Aakash." She bellowed.
Tears sprang to his cheeks as he was calling out for help.
"AMY!"
"Mr. Suri!" Ambar shook him but he didn't move an inch.
He was terror-stricken with the mere thought of fire around him and he felt to be haunted by his past again.
Ambar pelted across the corridor and gained access of the fire extinguisher from the hall way.
She pulled the pin on the extinguisher and aimed the hose nozzle low toward the base of the fire while squeezing the handle to release the extinguishing agent. She sweeped the nozzle from side to side at the base of the flames until it got extinguished.
She immediately placed it on the ground and ran towards the boy in the balcony.
Aakash hugged her in relief.
"Are you alright?" She asked him.
"Hmm. Amy." He nodded, still horrified.
"How did it happen?" She asked him.
"I.... The lamp...". He hiccuped when he pointed out the lamp which was lit near his mother's frame. The curtains had caught it, accidentally
"I was .... in the ... balcony. I... I couldn't come out. I got scared." He whimpered as his voice trailed off.
"It's okay... Nothing happened.. It was just an accident. You're safe." She comforted him as he snivelled in her arms.
"Come, I'll take you to my room." She held him and left the room.
Nakul was still rigid. He felt helpless and guilty seeing how he couldn't save his boy.
His past had ruined him so severely that he couldn't protect the kid when he was crying out for help.
'How could I? I'm a coward.' He shrieked before trembling on his feet.
"Mr. Suri?" Ambar stepped inside to find him grieving on the floor.
She helped him up to get into the nearest chair.
"He's absolutely fine." She said whilst holding him.
"I'm such a coward... I couldn't protect him... I failed to protect him." He cried.
"He's fine. There's no damage done... Except for the curtains and the windowpane". She tried to soothe him.
"I'm such a terrible guardian. I couldn't reach out when he was crying for me.." He closed his eyes but tears escaped from his eyes.
"I.... I'm sorry.. I shouldn't have yelled at you when I had been no more different. In fact, you saved him when I... just stood there." He couldn't stop from squalling.
"Please stop it. He's fine." She pleaded him to calm down.
"Go, take care of him... He needs you." He said, wiping his face.
"But he's asking for you." She apprised.
"No. You go... I can't face him... No.. I can't." He rambled on the same thing.
"Sir?"
"Just leave me alone. Take it as my order." He requested before she really left him all alone.
"I'm sorry... I'm sorry small shot." He palmed his face before breaking down.
------------------------------
"Where is Chachu?" Aakash asked Ambar as soon as she halted near him.
"He's... He's busy." Ambar lied.
"Didn't you tell him that I've been asking for him." He enquired.
"Yes, he'll come in a while." She kissed his hair, hugging him.
"I know. He got scared... I should have remembered that he's scared of fire.".l Aakash told her.
"Is he?" She asked him, surprised.
"He shivers when he's anywhere around the fire. Even near a candle or in the kitchen, his hands starts shaking." Aakash said.
"I shouldn't have lit the lamp." He regretted.
"It's okay. He'll be fine in some time." Ambar smiled at him.
"Alright!" He breath out.
"I'll get your milk, just the way you like."
------------------------------
For days, he ignored being anywhere around Aakash. He didn't even show up at the dining table during meals.
Aakash tried his best to go after him but he just neglected him. Most of the time, he used to stay in office and used to come home only after Aakash had slept.
This was the only time when he would visit him, when Aakash went into a deep slumber. He used to sit for hours before it was the time for Aakash to wake up.
Ambar observed him everyday. This infuriated her too as it was very difficult for her to clear Aakash's doubts knowing how much sharp he was.
Aakash didn't tell any of this incident to his granny whenever she called him.
Nakul avoided to pick up his mother's calls, ashamed and afraid that she will take his nephew away.
Two weeks had passed by and still there was no change in Nakul's behaviour and seeing how stiff-necked he had become, Ambar decided to take the matters in her hand.
She wasn't afraid this time. without even knocking, she intruded in his room.
"Listen, I want to talk..."
