Legends Of Old
"And the oldest artwork of the Egyptian period tells a tale of a queen, who had amazing power, but was also very kind. She had the powers of creation, and defended her kingdom from the aforementioned dark god, Gabe. It is often said she was a goddess incarnate. The name of this queen is lost, but this artwork also appears to foretell of a similar occurrence." Alix's dad let the students observe the mosaic until Alya called out.
"Hey! Doesn't the queen look like Marinette?" The brunette pointed at one part of the huge mosaic, which depicted a girl who did, indeed, look strangely like Marinette. Their skin tone, face shape, eyes and hair colour were practically identical. The only difference was the fact that the queen wore her hair down and looked slightly older, perhaps 20 or so. Mr. Kubdel came towards the two and inspected Marinette's face.
"Indeed, Alya. How strange. Marinette, are you aware of any ancestry in Egypt?" He said, capturing the attention of the rest of the class. Marinette shook her head, and curious, took her hair out of her pigtails to let it cascade over her shoulders. She couldn't stop staring into the stone eyes of the Egyptian queen.
"No, but I can try to find out. It's weird." She took a step closer, but still a respectful and legal distance from the artwork. Her eyes didn't stop scanning the mosaic, but nearby, in a glass case, the red jewel in the necklace that had belonged to the queen began to glow. "I feel like I know her." She murmured, eyes wandering down to an inscription near the neckline of her dress. Tilting her head, she read it aloud. "'An ancestor of she is a queen indeed. She will bear the burden of the futures she will see.' What...?"
Mr. Kubdel hurried over to her, attention diverted from the glowing necklace. "You can read that?!" He said excitedly.
Marinette looked confused. "You can't? Wait..." She looked to the words again, with a gasp. "They've changed!" She read out the new words. "'The purest of blood and richest of poor, the ruby of red will glow, it is sure.'" Suddenly, a shattering of glass drew her attention. She turned to see the necklace now floating as it glowed, all her classmates staring at either her or the sparkling ruby.
Marinette spoke the last line that had formed on the mosaic, only this time, she wasn't looking at it, instead, walking slowly towards the necklace. "A pendant of power, made for her own. And in her garden of heaven, she will sit alone." With those words, a circle of sparkling red light surrounded her feet, transforming her outfit as she walked closer. The glass around her feet shot away, conveniently missing all others in that room.
"Marinette?" Alya called out, but to no avail. The girl was now dressed in sandals and a red spotted Egyptian dress edged with gold. (Basically the image up there but without the mask and yoyo.) Everyone in that room would be lying if they said she didn't look like a goddess, or at least a queen. She reached for the necklace...
...And a flash of light blinded them all.
They awoke in a beautiful garden. Trees lined each pathway, flowers grew tall and free everywhere, the grass was soft as a pillow and the scent of flowers was heavenly. Butterflies flitted around, as well as birds, which sang their sweet song constantly. And standing there, a gorgeous smile on her face, was Marinette.
Alya rubbed her eyes, peeking out at her best friend. "Marinette?"
"Yes! You're awake!" Her bubbly attitude was of her mortal life. A mortal life that sadly, she would have to leave. "Come on, wake the others!" The dress was exactly the same as before the flash, only this time, Marinette was no longer glowing with magic, and she giggled as she tiptoed around sleeping bodies, gently shaking them and squealing quietly with happiness when they woke.
"Nino, Adrien, wake up!" Alya urgently shook her two friends, one of which woke up immediately while the other yawned, stretched and looked up groggily. Adrien was the former. Rolling her eyes at Nino, she pointed at Marinette. "Look at her!"
The two boys' eyes caught on to the girl, who was acting strangely, Sure, she seemed full of life and happiness, but it was if... she was hiding sadness.
And she was. Marinette had gathered her classmates here by accident, and decided to give them a last farewell. Especially to Alya, Adrien and Nino... she had to erase all memories of her mortal life from them. But... maybe... she could let Alya and Chat Noir retain memory of her. And now that she knew who Chat Noir was, that would be so much easier.
"Yay! You're all awake!" She clapped her hands with child-like joy. Abruptly, she dropped the smile she was wearing and tears pricked at her eyes.
"Marinette!" Alya reached for her friend, who allowed herself to be enveloped in the comforting hug. It would be the last hug she'd ever know. The last human contact she'd ever know.
"I have to say something." Marinette's voice cracked with sorrow and Alya hugged her tighter. "Alya, please, I have to say something to you all and I-I can't do that while you're hugging me." Reluctantly, Alya let her friend go and moved to stand next to Nino, a frown on her face.
"Well, Mari-trash? Get on with it, I have a manicure booked at 5." Chloe studied her nails and was extremely taken aback when Marinette appeared in front of her, suddenly tall and dark. But she fought that darkness that nipped at the back of her mind with a groan and hands pressed to head. Staggering back, she waved a hand and a beautiful blue bird brought a glass of a pink smooth liquid, which she downed in a second.
"Don't aggravate me, it'll be harder to control." She mumbled, gesturing lazily towards a shadow that was slowly creeping in. Everyone was thoroughly disturbed as they licked at her feet before being driven backwards by the same crackling light that changed her earlier.
"'It'?" Adrien cautiously approached her, placing a hand on her shoulder as she visibly weakened. The contact with him seemed to strengthen her, however.
"My power, I can create anything, but it wants me to create destruction and chaos. It's... hard to keep at bay, but I can... just control it." She winced before sighing in relief, straightening. "Anyway, I... I need to tell you all something."
Marinette strode forward, towards her friends and classmates. All eyes were on the young goddess, even if they didn't realise she was one yet. Taking a deep breath when she didn't need one, she let her goodbyes begin.
"You all are here because I brought you here, granted, by accident, but I'm going to put this to use. I have become... immortal, I think. I don't know, this is all so confusing. A queen? A goddess?" She avoided the shocked gazes by staring down at her hands, glowing with energy. "Basically, I'm not... human anymore. And I can't be on Earth anymore, well, I can't be seen on earth again." She looked up to see Alya's eyes tearing up. "I'm going to say goodbye, before erasing your memories of me and repairing them so you don't feel like you're missing something."
"No!" Alya screamed, reaching once more for Marinette. The bluebell eyed girl flinched. "I can't let you go! Erase me too, let me stay with you!"
She shook her head sadly. "I can't. But, I've picked two people to retain their memory of me." Alya's head lifted up and met her eyes, and she nodded. "Alya and Chat Noir. I need to clear some things up first, before any of you speak." She closed her eyes with a sigh. "I'm, well, Marinette's Ladybug, which means... there'll be a new Ladybug. And, I'll have to replace memories of myself with her." Surprisingly, Chloe remained silent. Shocked, but silent. It was Adrien who spoke.
"Do you know who Chat Noir is?" His green eyes whirled with newly formed intense sorrow. She silently nodded, letting out a shaky breath.
"Yes, and I won't reveal him to everyone, but he should tell Alya so she has someone to talk to." Marinette met his eyes when she said this, getting the message across. He gave her a small nod. "Now, I would ask you to remember me, but you won't, so I'll do one better. Be kind, be grateful, enjoy life, and leave this place with my blessing and the knowledge that one day, hopefully not for a long time, you will return, and you will be with those you love once more. Farewell, and good luck."
She clapped her hands and nearly everyone disappeared, except Adrien and Alya. Marinette now broke and she fell onto her knees, face in her hands and tears falling down her face. Both the two ran to her and held her in their arms.
"I-I don't w-want this, I j-just want to l-live my life with you." It wasn't clear who she meant by 'you' but it was clear that she was distraught. "Kitty cat, take care of Alya please, and Alya, take care of my kitty. Please." Both of them looked at each other before nodding without a word.
"I love you, Mari. You are my sister in all but blood." Alya pressed her forehead to the crying girl and kissed her forehead.
"I love you too, Alya. I'll be watching over you." She touched her friend's face with a smile before sending her back to Earth with a flash. And more tears ran down her face as she sobbed into Adrien's shirt.
"Marinette, look at me." His voice was unsteady, and his eyes were glazed over, yet he tried to remain strong for his Princess. "Whether you're Marinette or Ladybug, I love you, as Adrien and Chat Noir, and I promise I'll take care of Alya. Don't cry, bugaboo." He wiped her tears away as she gazed up at him with doe eyes.
"I-I love you too, kitty cat." She gently pressed a kiss to his lips, trying to pour all her love into one simple kiss, because that's all they'll have. "I'm crying because I'm about to be alone. Completely and totally alone. No you, no Tikki, no Maman or Papa, no Alya, no-one. Just me for a very long time, because the only way to see me again is for you to die, and I won't let you do that yet." She rested her forehead against his, much like what she had done with Alya.
"I'll see you again one day, my queen. One day." He gave her a half-smile. "I believe in the legends of old. The course of true love never did run smooth. I'll find a way, Princess. Of that, I'm sure."
And he was gone.
And she was alone.
Years she spent alone, not moving from the place he left her in.
It took years for him to find a similar pendant and mosaic in a long forgotten tomb, where the mosaic looked exactly like him and he could read the words.
"She waited for him to return, in her mind his words were burned.
And he found a way to reach her again, for his love was too vast to end.
He lifted her burden of being alone, by leaving his life to take her as his own."
"Told you I'd be back, my Princess."
Together again, they looked after their world. For there was never a time without hurt.
Yet together they saved the world from hate, balancing it out, making it something great.
The course of true love never did run smooth,
But it did for the two lovers
Who's love forever ran true.
