The reflection of the sun glistened and shined on her silver white hair. Her head laid in the glass. Another end of the school year and another summer have just started. She looked through the car window. Her lingering gaze cold and exhausted. She laid her head on the the glass. She traveled there every summer. She needed a place that was calm for her heart couldn't become anxious. Her condition wasn't something to take lightly for it depressed her every year. Having an abnormal heart meant that she could not raise her heartbeat to a certain level. Her heart was truly unique. In order for her to keep out of harms way, she would travel to a quaint little town.
Every summer she traveled to the countryside. Summer after, year after year. It had become a circadian rhythm for Azura. Although she lived in the city and it had been her home, the countryside was the only place where she had truly felt comfortable. It was peaceful, with a lingering silence that only Azura found to be perfect. However, silence wasn't her calling. Silence was her shadow but sound her light. Music truly brightened her world.
Going to the hospital week after week and year after year was now another place. To some the hospital evoked fear, to others pain, to Azura it was now normal. Having an abnormal heart included living an abnormal life but recently she had figured out that a procedure could make her life more normal. She could experience adrenaline in her heart. She could feel it pumping blood to her body. She wanted to feel her heart beating of excitement. She hadn't felt that way in sometime. The countryside would help her regain something in which she had lost long ago. A sense of adventure. A calling.
The car engine roared constantly before coming to a complete halt. There stood a figure. She looked through the glass before regaining her composure. The door opened as the cool air hitched onto her skin causing goosebumps on her skin.
"Welcome back cuz!" Hatori grinned.
Hatori Kazaki. Her summer caregiver and dearest cousin.
"Hello Hatori." Azura stated.
"Azu-zu-chan! You've gotten older since last summer. " Hatori hugged his cousin tightly.
She smiled faintly, "Its good to see you Hatori."
He frowned, "How come you never call me Ha-Chan or Atori-chan?"
"Hatori you very well know that this state gives me a great deal of deception, pain, and depression. You know how much I love being here with you. I look forward to the summer more than anything. I'm just... tired." She finished.
Hatori got her bags before letting her inside his house. The countryside was quite peaceful in the summer. Although it was breezy and chilly, Azura didn't want to get a cold. As Azura entered Hatori's quaint home she realized that most of her favorite memories were here. In this tiny little home. This place had so many memories inside her feeble, weak heart. Her eyes lingered out the window to the very field where she realized her problem.
Flashback
"Hatori! Hatori wait up! I'm going to get you."
Hatori cartwheeled making Azura clap in aw.
He cartwheeled again and again before saying, "You can't catch me Azura chan!"
"Watch me Hatori!" Azura proclaimed.
Azura ran after her cousin. They were playing tag in the field. Little children doing little things that would take about the day by surprise. Hatori had gotten a head-start that day. The harder she ran, the more her heart began beating. Faster and faster it went. Heavier and heavier she felt.
"Hatori wait up. I can't catch up."
She couldn't regain her breath. It was like the oxygen was disappearing from her lungs. She was gasping for air like a fish out of water. Then it happened. She shut off. Her heart shut off. Her vision became blurry and everything became dark.
After finding out she had Cardiomegaly or an enlarged heart, Azura had been on treatment since then. She couldn't afford to have a surgical procedure done until now.....
"Azura how are you feeling?" Hatori asked.
Azura smiled, "Thanks Hatori. I have news. "
Hatori looked at her confused, "News?"
Azura nodded, "I've been talking to a surgeon. He can do the procedure. He can make my heart thinner and normal...."
Hatori's eyes widened, " Are you sure you want to go through with this? I know you've been talking about a lot about the procedure. "
Hatori passed her a cup of tea to which she drank quietly.
"There is only one problem."
Hatori looked at her alarmed, "Problem? What problem?"
"We would have to go to Tokyo." Azura said in between slurps.
"Tokyo!" Hatori exclaimed.
Azura chuckled, "Yes. Tokyo. This doctor, he can.. he will make me normal."
"But you are normal." Hatori stated.
"I want to feel a sense of adventure again Hatori. I don't wanna live a life in vain. I want to feel adrenaline. I want to feel energy. I want to feel revived again." Azura said with a shimmer in her eyes.
Hatori sighed, "You already bought the tickets didn't you?"
Azura nodded sheepishly, "I did. You know me best Hatori."
"What if I would've said no." Hatori rose his eyebrow.
"I would've dragged you with me. You remember when I was younger. I could make you do almost anything." Azura faintly smiled.
Hatori muttered, "You were so savage."
Azura laughed, "That I was. I still am. I just have been more quiet about it."
Hatori smiled, "When do we leave?"
"Next week."
"Fine. Someone has to take care of you. It has to be me. " Hatori concluded.
"Hatori everything will be fine. What could possibly go wrong? " Azura stated.
"Don't jinx it Azura." Hatori grumbled.
" I don't believe in jinxing things Hatori. You've always been the superstitious one. Everything happens for a reason. Tokyo will be something new for the both of us. Please don't be a drag." Azura stated.
"When am I ever a drag?" Hatori protested.
"When your protective Hatori."
Hatori shrugged, "But Azu-zu chan. "
"No buts. We do this together or not at all." Azura nodded.
Hatori smiled, "Ok!"
Azura laughed as she stood up to take her no empty cup to the sink, only to grasp her chest. Her heart stung slightly before causing Azura to frown and groan dropping the porcelain tea cup. Once it hit the floor, it shattered into what seemed to be a million pieces.
Hatori stood up quickly, "Azura are you alright?"
Azura trembled, her fingers shaking and face pale with no color on her lips.
"I'm sorry." She uttered softly.
"It's ok Azura. I got it. Sit down ok." Hatori pulled a chair beside her and gently sat her down.
Azura did just that as she watched Hatori pick up the glass pieces carefully . Azura watched Hatori leave prompting her to stand. In an attempt to make it to her room, her vision became blurry. Being guided by double vision and dizziness cause her fatigue to feel like weights. Her legs seemed to be stuck. Before she knew it, she was out and it was all black and cold.
"Azura?" Hatori called.
"Azura!?!?" Hatori frantically looked for Azura finding her on the ground.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Azura fluttered her eyes open.
"Hatori?" Azura mumbled feebly before repeating, "Hatori?"
Hatori simply replied, "Thank goodness your ok."
"Hatori what happened?"
"You fainted. Was it your heart?"
Azura sat up making Hatori a bit uneasy about her physical state.
"Just another fluctuation. I'm ok Hatori."
"Another? What do you mean another? You've had this before? No wonder you're so calm about it. This is the reason why you dropped out of school, wasn't it?" Hatori suspiciously probed.
"....." Azura kept her silence before simply looking at the window.
A fluctuation meant that her heart rate would drop or rise to abnormals levels in an instant. It was truly something only surgery could correct.
"My god Azura, when are you ever going to let me in?" Hatori protested.
Hatori was quite flustered at how Azura kept these "little things " away from him. Sometimes she would comment saying it wasn't relevant but when it meant her life, that was something else. That was a big matter. Especially to Hatori. He had dedicated every summer just to and for her. To take care of her. It made him wonder what other things she hadn't told him.
"When I'm normal."
Hatori frowned, "I didn't mean it in that way. I'm sorry. How many fluctuations have you had?"
Azura replied lowly, "4 this month."
"How many have you had this year?" Hatori said surprised.
"I've lost count Hatori. Maybe 20. I don't know." Azura mumbled.
"20!?!?!" Hatori exclaimed, "You could've have told me about this sooner?"
"I didn't want to have you worry."
"I'm already worried Azura. " Hatori replied.
Azura sighed before Hatori replied, "You need to go to Tokyo. This is urgent."
Azura smiled faintly before holding Hatori's hand, "Don't worry. I'll get better and then it'll be me taking care of you."
Hatori smirked, "Don't get ahead of yourself Azu-zu chan. "
Azura sighed, "I'm sure that afterwards we can set a course to the unknown."
Hatori mumbled, "You read too many fantasies."
Azura simply replied, "I have not. It kills the time. I read fantasies and get immersed into them. It's such a wonderful feeling but actually being able to get into an adventure in the real word would simply be a miracle. "
Hatori patted her head, "There there. Azu-zu Chan needs my attention."
Azura slapped his hand away, "Stop the patting. Hatori I am not a child."
Hatori mumbled, "But your so cute. My little cousin. Azu-zu chan..."
Azura rolled her eyes, "We are only one year and one month apart. There isn't much of a difference. "
Hatori simply gave a pouty expression, "You're so cold Azu-zu chan... "
Azura simply smiled, "It's the truth Hatori. How long was I out anyways?"
Hatori regained his composure, "A few hours."
Azura nodded, "Alright then. We leave to Tokyo next week."
Hatori smugly replied, "Which is in three days."
Azura nodded, "Yes, precisely."
