Chapter 5 - Louise
Jason was coming to my house. And I was going to be the only one in. Let that sink in for a minute.
It was too bad that we lived in an apartment block and not a housing scheme. It would have been easy for me to sit like a little girl and watch him from my bedroom window but the way that things were, I could only really pray to meet him in the hall, which never happened. I guessed that he always left before me in the mornings and came home after I did. What a working man.
It didn't help either, that Lily kept pestering me all week for information that I just didn't have. Eventually I resorted to doing something pretty creepy, just to satisfy her hunger.
In our building, instead of delivering the mail straight to our doors, the postman just separates everything into individual piles for each tenant and leaves them on a shelf on the ground floor. It's incredibly lazy but I'm used to it after living here for three years. So midway through the week, when Jason sightings were scarcer than those of UFO's, I took a sneak peak at the pile next to our own. Everything was addressed to Jason Harley.
This taught me two things. Firstly, I finally knew his last name so I could now scribble it in my notebook and surround it with giant love hearts. Seriously, I'm kidding.
The second thing that I could gather from this was that he did in fact live alone. Having grown up in a house with myself, Anna and my mom I know that girls are constantly ordering things online. There's always a parcel, a catalogue, a magazine or some random letter for girls every day. So the fact that there was nothing here for a female told me that Jason didn't currently have a woman in his life. My suspicions were confirmed a couple of days later.
On Friday night my dad arrived to pick me up earlier than he usually did.
"What are you doing here so early?" I asked him.
"I need to pick up a few things so by the time I'm done, so will you be" He smiled. I shrugged, figuring he was right. He grabbed a basket and took a few steps before twirling round like a ballerina. "I don't suppose you know what kind of beer Jason across the hall likes, do you?" He quizzed. "I was thinking we could all go over together tonight to introduce ourselves properly and welcome him to the building. I haven't even met the guy and I already like him more than that old drunk Higley"
My throat swelled up as I struggled to comprehend what dad was telling me. I was going to go over to Jason's tonight? Are you serious? Once I finally recovered, I revealed that I did in fact know what he liked. Got that sounds dirty.
"He bought a pack of Coors Light when he was in on Monday" I said.
"Day one and he was already on the booze" Dad said with a wry smile. I could see him having a flashback to when he was the same age.
"He bought milk as well. And coffee, and bread" I stopped when I realised I was rambling, and didn't need to defend Jason's purchases.
After we got home, I quickly changed into a semi-smart top and touched up my makeup. I don't normally wear too much (The length of time Lily takes to get ready with it scares the hell out of me) but I'd been putting it on every day since Monday, hoping that Jason would notice my improvement. Obviously it didn't work.
We got to his apartment and he let us in straight away, probably because we were bearing gifts. He even had a beer with my dad and brother! Mom took a coffee while I only asked for water. I didn't want him running after me and my throat issue from earlier on had returned at the mere sight of him. I could tell that he'd just been lazing about because he was just wearing shorts and a t-shirt but somehow it was still great to look at. He seemed so relaxed, which was the polar opposite to me right now. My heart was beating at a thousand miles an hour and I kept thinking I was going to faint. The tension in me was somewhat eased though when Jason kind-of burned Brandon pretty hard. He mentioned that he knew my brother's name, forcing Brandon to turn into the cocky little prick that he so often does when he gets "spotted". But Jason shot him down in flames straight away as soon as he said that he didn't actually like tennis. I think he felt bad but I found it pretty entertaining.
Over the course of the forty-five minutes that we spent there, I learned a number of things about young Mr. Harley.
He was definitely single, he was nice to old people, he was funny and he worked as an electrician. Hence why he was coming to my house. Once my parents announced their wishes for new lights, I wished that I'd paid attention to some of their conversations. Then I could maybe have been a little prepared. Instead I just embarrassed myself by freezing up and then blurting random things out.
To try and calm myself down, I text Lily with all of the new information I had. My thinking was that if I told her everything then she would ease up on her constant interrogations. Despite her dream of being an online celebrity, I think she'd make a great detective. She just doesn't shut up so I'd confess to everything just to get rid of her.
Naturally my plan failed. She just came up with a hundred other questions, including what his star sign was and how tidy his bathroom was. Is that important? Her star sign question was ridiculous because I don't believe in any of that nonsense but I found out just for her. The good old Facebook stalk. Now that I had his full name he was pretty easy to find. I clicked onto his profile and stared at the leading picture of him sitting at a table in a bar wearing black shirt and grinning like a wild man as he stared lovingly at a bottle of beer. Maybe he was related to Mr. Higley?
Before I knew what I was doing, I clicked to add him as a friend. I slammed my laptop shut as soon as I realised what I'd done. What an idiot. Like hell would he care about the rubbish I put online. He surprised me though, by accepting the request almost immediately. And of course, Lily liked the friendship too. I wish I was born in the eighties so I didn't need to deal with all of this. The movies make everything look easier without social media.
I wasn't working that weekend so I met up with Lily and Mason at the frozen yoghurt place in the mall. Baltimore is supposedly the biggest independent city in the whole of the US but there's still nothing for us to do. So we took our books in a bid to get a study session going. We had a math test coming up soon and despite the fact that all three of us knew a lot of things as a collective group, none of us were great at equations. Of course, as every study session tended to do, this one came to a grinding halt.
"What is the point in teaching us this shit?" Mason cried. "Everyone has a calculator these days. It's a waste of everyone's time to teach us this"
"Who do you think actually thinks to themselves that being a math teacher would be a fun job? How low must your ambitions be?" I laughed.
"Ambition isn't their problem. IQ is. You might be able to count but you really are an idiot!" Lily screeched, attracting the attention of every other person in the cafe for a brief second. I couldn't help but laugh. I would feel embarrassed if that many people were staring at me but Lily was acting like she'd just won a gold medal.
"Any new developments on the guy?" Mason asked me.
"What guy?" I asked, stalling for as long as I could.
"Morgan Freeman. Who do you think?" He joked. Before I could answer, Lily gave him all of the information that I'd relayed to her the night before. "You know this is insane right?"Mason asked. "He's almost a decade older than you"
"You think I don't know that?" I retorted. "It's not like I'm going to ask him out or anything"
Defending me, Lily argued "You have a major thing for Katy Perry but we hardly call you insane do we?"
"Pop music shouldn't be as good as she makes it" He fed us the same line he always did when we called him out like this. "And I'm only stalking her online, unlike the real life shenanigans that you two are up to"
We had another fro-yo and did some more half assed studying before I went home.
My parents were cooking together whilst Brandon was glued to the TV. I missed living with Anna. She would always talk to me when everyone else wasn't doing so and she could always give me some advice if I needed it. I didn't think she'd have much nice things to say about this situation with Jason though. He was even older than her! I flicked through his Facebook page while I waited for dinner to be ready. He hadn't been posting much lately, probably because he was busy moving house. His last post was about him finally moving in and that was a whole week ago. From what I could gather, he was a very sociable guy, often being pictured on nights out or playing basketball with his friends, of which he had around 600. Of course online always exaggerates these things. I found a picture of him and another guy, who upon further inspection, I found out, was his brother. He was hot too! What the hell were his parents like?
There were a lot of people sending him well-wishes about his move, including some skanky looking girls who I hoped he didn't really like and loads of people asking about a house warming party. Apparently I wasn't the only one who liked Jason!
The week passed and before I knew it I was receiving strict instructions from my parents about everything I had to do for Jason coming in the morning. They'd been out through the week to buy the new lights for the kitchen and been over to Jason's twice to ask him questions. He must hate this family.
"We'll leave the door unlocked for him but make sure you're up by nine at the very latest" Dad ordered.
"And make sure that he has everything he needs. If he doesn't, get it for him" Mom took over.
"But don't get in his way, make yourself as scarce as possible" Dad interrupted. I wondered if their wedding vows were as rehearsed as this routine.
"If there's anything that neither of you are sure on, just get him to give one of us a call" Mom finished.
"Yes mom, yes dad, yes mom, yes dad" I said sarcastically.
They both yelled at me for being disrespectful but the truth was that I was just really nervous. Here I was, about to be left at home alone with literally the guy of my dreams. As if it wasn't bad enough that I didn't want to do anything to make him hate me, I now also apparently had to be at his beck and call, but not in his way, and get him anything he needed but if he needed anything I had to call one of my parents. They didn't need to fill my head with all these stupid requests. It wasn't like I was going to ignore him and leave us without any lights. How dumb do they think I am?
I made sure to get an early night, much to the annoyance of Lily who really wanted to do something but there was no way I was going to risk sleeping in. I didn't want to feel the wrath of my parents and I wanted to see as much of Jason as I possibly could.
As usual though, my plan didn't work. I snapped awake at 8:45 and was immediately greeted with some thumping loud music. I was confused and sleepy but I got up to investigate it anyway. I left my room and trudged towards the source of the sound, but the closer I got, the more confusing things became.
The music that was playing was the song "Need You Tonight" by INXS. Now, I know what you're thinking, why does Louise know something as ancient as that but there's a reasonable explanation for it. They are one of my dad's favourite bands and every time he gets really drunk, he puts this song on and turns it right up. Seeing how it wasn't even nine AM I highly doubted that dad was hammered, and besides he wasn't even supposed to be in anyway. No one was . . . except for Jason.
I got to the kitchen and found him standing halfway up a small ladder, drilling holes out of our ceiling and singing along to the music at the top of his lungs. When he saw me staring at him, I waited for his smiling face to turn into one of embarrassment and for him to act like it had never happened, but that moment never came.
"I didn't wake you did I?" He asked.
"A little" I admitted. "I didn't see this as being your kind of music"
"Are you kidding? This song is awesome. I'm lonely!" It took me a second to realise that he'd started singing again and wasn't confessing anything to me. "Can't take it all!" He continued.
"Can you please stop? It's way too early for this shit" I yawned. Only then did I realise that I was still in my white strappy top and furry pink pyjama bottoms. It seemed as though I was destined for Jason to see me at my worst for the rest of eternity.
"You're no fun" He smiled before hopping off his ladder and repositioning it so he could make more holes.
"Is this an easy job?" I asked.
"Yeah it's pretty straightforward. I shouldn't be more than a couple of hours"
"Cool. Well if you need anything, just give me a shout" I said before briskly walking to the bathroom. I had a quick shower and put on some real clothes, hoping that I could somehow salvage the situation.
Once I was a little happier with my appearance, I returned to the kitchen to find him now singing along to a different beast altogether.
"Really? Justin Bieber?" I giggled.
"You have to admit it's catchy" He shrugged.
"Never going to happen. Aren't you embarrassed to listen to this?"
"Why would I be? I like the song" He shrugged again.
"Yeah but you don't strike me as a fangirl . . . boy. Especially when you were singing INXS earlier. I mean, what kind of music do you actually like?" I asked.
"I like everything. If I can sing along to it then it's good enough for me"
"No, I mean what genre. Like are you a disco guy, a hip hop fan or a rock star?"
"I'm nothing. Wow, that sounds depressing" We both laughed. "I just like music. I don't think you should have to stick to one thing, what's the point. If you like it, you like it" He smiled.
"You liked Gangnam Style didn't you?" I joked.
"I loved Gangnam Style!" He cried enthusiastically. "Hey sexy lady!" He shouted at me. I know he was just singing the song but it still felt a little flattering.
After recomposing himself, he ascended his ladder once more. Now he was connecting our new lights into where the holes were. I've seen people doing DIY before and it's never interested me in the slightest. But watching Jason working away was enthralling. It was like watching a chemical reaction, where two things come together and turn into a bright, blazing colour and you have no idea how it happened. With both his arms working above his head, his t-shirt was dragged up a bit too, revealing to me a teasing glance of his stomach. I found myself staring, wondering what the rest of it looked like. Didn't he have any clothes that fit him?
"What about you, what stuff do you like?" He asked, snapping me from my trance.
"What?" I asked in bewilderment, hoping he hadn't caught me staring.
"Music. What are your favourites?" He asked again.
"Oh right. I dunno, I like a lot of stuff too I guess. Fall Out Boy, Maroon 5, Nickelback. Stuff like that" I shrugged rather timidly.
"Excellent choices" He smiled at me.
"Really?"
"Hell yeah! Like I said, if they have good songs then they're ok in my book. I even sing along to One Direction every now and again" He winked.
"You don't?" I snorted.
"Sure I do. Want to listen?"
"No! No I'm fine thank you" I laughed.
"Your loss!" He sighed.
I looked up at him again as he went back to work and saw that sweat was pouring down his face. In fact, there was even a dark stain around the top of his t-shirt where it had spread down his neck. Our kitchen was a suntrap at the best of times, and today the sun was coming in stronger than ever. I watched as a single bead of sweat appeared on his forehead and slowly made its way down to his chin, before dropping off and disappearing into the air.
"Is something wrong?" He asked me, once again breaking me out of my hypnosis.
"No, you just look hot – I mean, it's pretty hot. Do you want a drink?" I asked, putting my hand against my head. What was wrong with me?
"Some water would be great thanks" He beamed. I got him a full glass and handed it to him. He finished it almost right away. I watched him as he laid the glass down and gave out a completely over the top sigh of refreshment.
"Was that good?" I said sarcastically.
"Amazing" He replied. I stood in silence for a while as he got back to work, not really sure what to do with myself. I fixed myself a bowl of cereal and leaned against the wall at the other side of the room to eat it, making sure I stayed out of his way.
"You don't need to hang around you know?" He asked.
"Do you want me to leave you alone?" I tried to mask my disappointment.
"No no not at all! I just mean, I thought you'd have something better to do like post a blog or take selfies with your friends or something. Isn't that what everyone your age is doing these days?"
"Not everyone" I said, feigning disgust. He wasn't far off the mark though. Lily was always shoving her phone in my face and squeezing right up to me so we could take a million different pictures together of the same thing. I swear her Facebook has more pictures of me on it than my own one does.
"My mistake. Guess I'm out of touch with the youth of today!" He chuckled.
"You're not that old" I said, more for my benefit than his.
"When I was your age, Taylor Swift was a country singer and Miley Cyrus wasn't a freak" He bluntly told me.
"God, you're right. You are ancient!" I joked.
"Hey watch it!" He ironically pointed at me, but I simply stuck my tongue out at him.
It was amazing how comfortable I was with him considering how nervous I was the night before. Despite looking like he was untouchable, Jason was a really relatable guy. You could talk to him about anything and have a laugh with him. I have to admit that part of me actually hoped he was an asshole, just so that my feelings for him would disappear. Clearly that wasn't going to be happening any time soon though.
We fell into a silence then, but not an awkward one. More like a peaceful, serene one where we were happy enough to just soak in the presence of the other. I couldn't believe how well this was going, and I was excited to find out what was going to happen next.
