Chapter 15 - Louise

Anna finally returned from her trip to the car after what felt like forever. We'd paused Frozen and Olaf's creepy snowman eyes had been staring at me for ten minutes.

She'd stepped out because her iphone was running out of battery and there weren't any spare chargers in the house. All of my family have an iphone except me (I can't afford one) but they'd all taken their own charger with them to California. The coordination of my family was baffling at times.

"I thought you said your charger was in your car? Did you need to drive home for it or something?" I asked.

"Sorry, I got caught up talking to Jason. He's very nice, I can see why you like him" She explained as she dropped back down beside me on the sofa. It was like a seesaw, as she went down, I shot straight up.

"You did what?" I asked in astonishment. Did Jason tell her anything? Is that why she said I liked him so much? Does she know everything?

"Yeah, he was coming up the stairs when I was going down. He seemed pretty tired but he's a nice guy" Anna shrugged.

"What did he say?" I asked, hoping I didn't sound as panicked as I felt.

"Nothing much. Nothing at all actually. Why?"

"No reason" I lied, apparently obviously.

"Oh my god! You like him!" She exclaimed.

"I do not"

"You so do! You're blushing! And why else would you be getting so excited about my meeting with him?" She sang.

"Because I don't want you harassing him" I didn't even believe myself.

"So this is quite the competition between Jason and this boy from school then isn't it?" She said slyly.

"For the last time, there's no boy from school!"

"So it's just Jason?"

"Yes! No! I mean no!" I fluttered.

"Oh relax Lou!" She laughed, wrapping her arm around my shoulders. "I've been where you are so I know exactly how you feel. I'm not going to judge you. You can talk to me"

Her sympathetic voice calmed me down, as did the knowledge that she definitely had been where I was. I was only around eleven at the time but I remember that Anna had the biggest crush on this kid that lived down the road from us. Brandon always teased her about it and I remember hearing her crying in her room one night because of it.

"Just don't say anything to mom and dad ok?" I asked.

"Of course I won't" She smiled warmly. "How long have you liked him?"

"Since he got here. He came out of his apartment looking all hot and not bothered and I just fell in love with him"

"I bet it hurts knowing how much older he is huh?"

I almost told her about the kiss then but decided to wait until I'd spoken to Jason. Mostly because I knew Anna and she would probably go straight to his door and warn him off me. She's amazing but sometimes does get a little overprotective.

"Can we please just put the movie back on? This snowman is scaring the shit out of me" I said nonchalantly as I pressed the play button. We managed five minutes before Anna spoke again.

"Names aside, do you think I'm more Anna or Elsa?"

"I don't know" I sighed.

"I think I would still be Anna. I'm fun, outgoing and a little clumsy but very cute" I was pretty sure she was just talking to herself.

"Sure" I replied in a whisper.

"You'd definitely be Elsa. Grumpy, anti-social and always locked in your room"

"I'm not in my room right now!" I exasperatedly cried.

"And you do sometimes have this cold, icy personality when you get annoyed" She said ignoring my defence.

"Anna, I'm trying to watch the movie! Will you just let it go?" I knew I'd made a mistake as soon as I'd spoken. Instead of making a joke out of it though, Anna and I just stared at each other, willing the other to be the first to burst into laughter.

We managed to get through the rest of the movie without any more incidents, and without my present company falling asleep. My sister continued to pester me all night about Jason but I kept shutting her down until we went to bed. We were both going to be sleeping in my bed, just like when we were kids. Well, when I was a kid. Anna has always seemed so much older to me. She was twenty when I was thirteen for Christ sakes!

"So come on, tell me. What is the best thing about Jason?" She asked.

I thought before answering "That's just it. I don't think there is a best thing"

"What do you mean?"

"Well he's good looking obviously. But that's just one part of it. Like a handy perk. He's funny, friendly, always makes time for people and more than anything else, he just acts normal. Like he has doubts, he has fears, just like anybody else. Plus he loves to sing along to the most ridiculous songs ever" I laughed.

"And he's an amazing kisser" I thought but didn't say.

"You really like him don't you?" Anna's voice was muffled through the bed covers.

"Yeah, I do" I whispered back.

We went to sleep and Anna left the next morning. She said that she had loads of wedding planning to do but I was welcome to join. I politely declined and began tidying up the apartment again. This time there really was a mess but it didn't take long to clean it up. After that was done and I had a quick lunch, I once again tried Jason's door, and this time he answered.

"Hey" He said in the same sleepy sounding voice that he'd used the first time I'd met him.

"Hey" I smiled back. I made a promise to myself that I'd keep myself under control when he answered but I had already failed myself. I could literally feel my grin touching both ears.

"What's up?" He asked. I hoped that it wasn't just my imagination but I could have sworn that he was sizing me up.

"I was just wondering if you had anything planned today. I thought we could maybe hang out at my place. It gets pretty lonely when the full house is suddenly empty"

"Isn't your sister over?" He cast his eyes over to my apartment as if he could see through the solid door.

"She was" I confirmed. "But she's gone home to plan her wedding again. You'd think it took a lot of effort or something" I joked nervously.

"I don't want to be in the way or anything" He gulped.

"Trust me, you won't be. It's the least I can do for everything you did for me yesterday. Like breakfast, I mean!" I spat out the last part just in case he got the wrong idea of what I was meaning. Although I did want to thank him for that too.

He seemed to be weighing up the options in his head; I could almost see his head tipping from right to left like a set of scales.

"Sure. Why not?" He finally decided.

He quickly tidied his apartment and then came over where I offered him a coffee. I wanted him to feel as comfortable and relaxed as possible.

"My parents left me loads of the stuff but I've not even touched it" I told him as I poured water into the kettle, ready to boil.

"Well now's your lucky day" He said.

"Oh no, I'm just making for you" I told him. "I've never really tired it before"

"Well you don't know if you don't try right?" He said. "Come on, just a little taste" He goaded.

"But what if I make a whole cup of it and it turns out that I don't like it? Isn't that a waste?"

After a brief period of silence, Jason seemed to get an idea. "I know just what to do? Give me a bowl" He told me.

"What?" I laughed.

"Trust me; it's a little trick I picked up at work once. We were working in this house and the people there, the customers, they were assholes! But they told me and Bradley that they'd left out some coffee for us whenever we wanted it. So we went to make some but it turned out that they didn't leave us any cups or anything to drink it from. All of theirs were in the sink, totally dirty. It was disgusting"

"They do sound like assholes" I remarked. I loved watching how excited Jason was getting at the telling of his story.

"I know! So we decided to sort of give them a little fuck you sign. So we raided their cupboards and found a clean bowl"

"And you made coffee in a bowl?" I guessed.

"Genius right?" He said proudly. "So if we do the same just now, I get the world's biggest coffee and you get a taste test. Everybody wins!"

"Are we going to do that thing where we each have a straw and we drink out of it like a loved up couple from an eighties movie?" I smirked.

"What? No way" He said in what sounded to me like disgust. I was slightly taken aback until he continued and I discovered he was joking. "I may be drinking coffee out of a bowl like a dog but I'm not a child, Louise. God, what do you take me for?"

He then explained that we'd just simply lift the bowl to our mouths whenever we wanted a drink. It was a totally ridiculous thing to be doing but it was more fun than I could explain. I got the feeling that doing anything with Jason would be fun.

"So what's the review? Give it to me" He said after he over-exaggeratedly slurped up the last little bit of our drink and laid it on the coffee table by the sofa.

"The coffee itself, seven out of ten. I see why you drink it. The presentation-slash-bowl . . . five. Not my cup of tea. Get it?" I winked.

"Wow that was bad" He said, laughing anyway. "But seriously, the bowl idea is awesome! It's like four times the fun!"

"It's tough on the hands! It's hot!" I laughed. Jason was laughing again as well but he seemed to stop when he caught me watching him. I wondered if he was thinking the same as me.

Not as hot as the kiss yesterday.

"So what do you want to do today?" He asked, breaking my swooning thoughts, but not entirely.

"I have a pretty good idea" I said conspiratorially.

"I'm all ears" He shrugged.

Instead of replying with words, I shuffled myself closer to Jason, slowly leaning my head towards his. My lips were pursed, ready to kiss him when I felt a whooshing breeze which I knew was him standing up.

"Look, we need to talk about that" He said as he nervously began pacing the room.

"What about it?" I asked, standing up too as if that would make him say anything other than what I thought he was going to.

"I should apologise for kissing you yesterday" He sighed. "I shouldn't have done that"

"Don't apologise. I'm glad you did, it was amazing!" I cried.

"I don't know if it was the right thing to do"

"Did you want to?" I asked.

"Ummm . . . yeah, I wanted to" He confessed. "But that's not the point. This, whatever this is" He pointed between both of us, "This can't happen"

I watched him slump down onto the arm of the sofa and saw the pain in his eyes. I didn't need to assume anything at this point. I knew without a doubt that he liked me, but he felt guilty for doing so. I knew why, but that didn't mean I understood it.

"Why not?" I asked anyway.

"You're sixteen and I'm twenty-five. That's a crazy age gap" He said regretfully.

"So?"

"Your family would lose it. Everybody would"

"Is that the only reason?" I asked playfully. I knew he was trying to warn me off, but all he was doing was making the situation more attractive.

"Well. . . ." He trailed off as I slowly walked towards him, my eyes locked onto his. I could see the fire in them, like a furnace, the fire trying it's hardest to escape its confinement. "Lou" He whispered as I reached him. Now that he was perched on the arm of my couch, he was closer to my height, yet I still had to look up at him.

"What?" I giggled as I put my hands on his outstretched thighs.

He didn't answer me. He stared straight at me like he did when he was deciding if he was going to come over.

"Hmm?" I asked again, closing my eyes and inching my face into his again. This time he didn't stand up. He didn't move an inch. He let my lips reach his and kissed me back softly.

People say that they get butterflies in their stomach when something as perfect as this happens but that wasn't the case for me. It felt like there two giant T-Rex's inside me, fighting for supremacy and they both kept pushing and pulling each other all over the place. If I wasn't already pressing all my weight onto Jason, I would have been shaking uncontrollably but just the touch of him calmed me down. I'd kissed boys before but they were nothing like this.

"No one can find out about this" He said, finally pulling away for air.

"I can keep a secret" I whispered before kissing him quickly again, not wanting to miss a single second of him. He looked as though he was about to say something else to me but then he grew a sly grin instead. What I said must've had quite an impact on him because he put his arms around my waist and pulled me closer into him. "Last time you touched me there you were throwing me out of your house" I reminded him.

"Things are a little different now, huh?" He smirked. I softly nodded, my nose touching his. We were that close. "Are you ready?" Jason asked.

"For what?"

"This!" He cried before falling back onto the sofa, lifting me all the way over so that I was now lying on top of him. Once I stopped screaming, I laughed with him before his lips shut me up once again. The fall had moved me up a bit so that my hands were now placed solidly against his chest, like I was preparing to do push ups. There was no way I was moving anywhere now though. The only muscle that was moving was my tongue as it roamed freely in Jason's mouth.

This was definitely hotter than the coffee bowl!

In the distance I heard my cell phone ring but I forgot about it instantly. This was the only place I wanted to be, with our breaths the only sounds. It was truly a perfect moment.

This of course meant that it would soon be ruined. . . .
