chapter three

Letter to you

MAXWELL COULDN'T HELP BUT MISS HIS TWO FAVORITE PEOPLE. Being a part of the war was miserable, painful, and all around heart-wrenching. To make matters worse, he didn't quite get along with anyone in his squadron. Except one man who he got along with a little too well on and drunken night and had avoided ever since.

He took a seat on his thin and cramped bed, pulling out a piece of paper and a pen. He and Steve had been writing back and forth, not often but often enough to keep them both going. Neither of them had heard from Bucky in about a week which worried Max more than he cared to admit but, he buried it down until he knew for sure what was happening.

Then, the Barnes boy started to scribble a simple letter.

Dear, Stevey

It's good to know that that you are happy where you are. Things have been alright here but, I miss you and Bucky. I miss having nights on the town and singing at the top of my lungs in the streets. I miss all of it, and I wish things would go back to the way they were.

While you are out there changing the world, i'll be here training and trying to stay alive. It sounds kind of morbid when I say it like that, doesn't it? I guess I kind of envy you in a way, i'd rather people not believe in me so I can prove them wrong like you did.

Max looked up after hearing yelling outside, his free time was far and few between, this being evidence of that.

Anyways, I have to go now. Keep me updating on the exciting things happening to you and let me know if you hear from Bucks, I miss him.

Sincerely,
Maxwell Barnes

AMES HATED BEING SECOND PLACE IN ANYONES EYES. Yet, here she was, awaiting for some man to receive better powers than her. It was almost infuriating to her that the government wanted so badly for some white male to have powers instead of someone who actually had experience with these things.

"Don't be so sour, doll. You are still important." Howard commented, leaning on the cold wall.

"You were never a good liar, Howie." Amelia furrowed her brows slightly, pushing her hair back behind her shoulders.

"Don't give me that." The Stark man got up to his feet, extending a hand. "Come on, we have work to do."

"We?" Ames raised a slight brow, taking the mans hand.

"Yes, I need a partner to help me with this and you are qualified enough." Howard shrugged. "If you don't know something we'll just improvise."

"It's just a dream to be a rich man, isn't it." The Yang woman asked, raising a brow as the Stark man pulled her gently through small crowds of people.

"Most of the time." He nodded slightly as the two walked down the steps.

Amelia was almost angry? When she seen the man that was taking the powers that were supposed to belong to her. He was short, scrawny, and a little timid looking if she was honest. Not exactly the characteristics of a super solider but, nonetheless, she kept a smile on her face as Howard dropped her hand.

"We may dim half the lights in Brooklyn but we are ready as we'll ever be." The man commented as a group of people stood over the skinny man.

"Good morning, Ames." Dr. Erskine smiled. "I think agent Carter would be more comfortable in the booth, do you mind taking her there?"

"Ms. Yang will be helping us today." Howard interjected. "I'll have someone else take care of agent Carter."

Amelia smiled weakly, she knew that she wasn't wanted. She was just a failed test subject that didn't have any use anymore. Or at least, that's what she was to most people.

As agent Carter left, she noticed a sort of longing glance coming from the woman but, decided it was best to ignore it.

"I'm going to need you to just flip this switch when I say so, okay?" Howard said, not taking a glance the woman's way as he flipped a few switches over.

"No problem, Mr. Stark." Amelia nodded
slightly.

Dr. Erksine began to talk over the speaker to the onlookers. Ames drowned out the sound on his voice focusing on the skinny man laying down on the table across from her. This can not be happening she thought with a sigh.

"Serum infusion beginning in five, four, three, two." Howard nodded his head towards Amelia and she looked down, beginning to pull the handle down. "One."

Everyone turned their attention towards the man as he groaned loudly.

"Now, Stark." Dr. Erskine demanded, Howard flipping a different switch automatically.

Everyone in the room, scientists, nurses, and military personnel alike watched as the table rose up, wrapping itself around the man. She heard someone say his name, Steven. That's what it was.

The girl never realized she'd remember his name forever.

"Turn that switch up to 400 will you, doll?" Howard said, gesturing to a knob not far from the Yang woman. She snapped out of her thoughts and nodded, cranking it up half way.

That's when the Stark man approached an even bigger wheel, beginning to twist it with all his strength.

"That's 10%, 20%, 30." It started to get both louder and brighter in the room, Amelia narrowing her eyes. "That's 40, 50%, 60, 70."

Steve started to scream as the area became even brighter than before. In that moment, Ames felt bad for despising him, for envying him. She wasn't that kind of girl.

"Steven! Steven!" Dr. Erskine yelled.

Peggy ran out of the room she had been placed in immediately, racing to the railing, "Shut it down! Shut it down!"

"Kill the reactor, Mr. Stark. Kill it! Kill the reactor!" The doctor yelled.

"Ames, help!" Howard yelled, the girl immediately helping him turn off a few switches that had been put into place.

"No! Don't! I can do this!" Steve yelled back.

The group all looked at each other before turning back the switches to it's previous place and watching whatever was about to unfold.

"80, 90, that's 100." Howard announced to the room.

Sparks began to fly around the room, making many jump. Not Amelia, she was too engulfed into what was happening before her. The lights shined brighter but her eyes adjusted, they had been tweaked to be stronger than normal.

The sparks ceased and the pod opened up revealing a completely different man, a stronger man.

Everyone began to cheer, Ames leaping over and hugging Howard. They got a bit closer than they ever had, both of them pulling away awkwardly. Amelia couldn't tell if her feelings were just hers or belonged to them both.

Then, the explosion happened. Nobody was expecting it. How would they?

Pieces of glass pierced the Yang woman's skin, it didn't hurt but it was a pain.

"Stop him!" She heard someone yell.

Then, the shots.

...and darkness.
