Chapter LV

The Sun was beaming proudly in the sky as the owner of it and all. The sky was blue and clear, something not seen much by the city in the last couple of months. With blue sky, there were birds that appeared black. It was the scenery, every primary school kid preferred to draw over anything and everything. The only missing thing in that scenery was the mountain which was near but on in the frame. The rainy season had ended and it was warm before the winter commenced.

Dia was in a famous coffee shop, waiting for Aman, who was late. She had been seated for five minutes but the AC. still had no effect on her. October heat, a part of summer lost between two different seasons, was strong and blunt. Dia was regretting letting her hair loose, it was no friend of the heat. The incident reminded her of the time when her face and body was cover in black cloth every time she meets the sun. It was hard for her but those days were more precious than the present. She smiled thinking of her time in the past.

Aman came not less than fifteen minutes after her arrival. She crossed her arms confidently, ready to hear what he wanted to say. He got comfortable, made his order and had a conversation with his client on the phone before he paid any attention to her. "I am signing the papers but you must sign a paper which says you will not reveal anything related to me. If you do so there will be consequences. Let's separate our ways without causing problems for each other."

"I have caused no problem but your father sent a few festive greetings."

"You were the one who vanished and started the problem."

Dia chuckled. "Sure it was my fault."

"It was. You could have asked for the divorce and it would have ended months ago, peacefully."

"I would have asked and you would have given me the divorce that easily? All I had to do was ask?" She asked rolling her eyes internally.

"Yes. You only had to ask."

"And you would have happily done that?"

"Yes, I would have happily done that."

Dia pressed her lips together to stop herself from talking. She held a steady gaze at him for a moment before nodding her head. "Then I am sorry for wasting your time. I did not know things were that easy."

He looked down with no response. Dia, whose emotions got out of her hands managed to control it. She gained a lot in the past few months and the most valuable of them was patience. Taking a deep breath she looked at him. "Why did you want to meet? I am not going to meet you again like this."

"This would be our last meeting. After today we both will not disturb each other. Let's pretend we never met."

She smiled looking at his fingers. "I have known you for a long time for me to forget that we met. But sure. That's for the best." She looked away before saying, " why are we here today?"

"I thought I must speak before it ends." She looked up and listened to him attentively. " You were my parent's choice. I was never asked if I liked you. I did my best to be a nice son, a nice husband, you cannot deny. But then I could take it no more. My father was never satisfied, so I thought if I cannot be a good son why must I pretend to be a good husband. I tried, I did but you could never be the one. You followed my every order religiously and stopped me never. You allowed me to treat you the way I wanted and so I did. If you had stopped, I would have stopped but you never made an effort. It made me angrier. It made me feel like a monster and my father made me feel like a failure. Both of you disturbed me, made me angry and changed the way I was. Any chance of liking you disappeared after that. I was never in love with you and I never will be. So it's better we end it. Do you not agree?"

"Why are you telling me this? We are parting away then what made you think you must speak?" She could not keep annoyance away from her tone.

"Because I want you to know I had my reasons. "

She crossed her arms again and leaned back. "Yes, you had reasons. But what was my fault in this? Why was I dragged in it? If you didn't like me let alone love then why did you marry me?"

"Because my father thought it was a good idea."

She frowned. "How long will your father control you? Are you a kid?"

"We are not here to talk about that."

"Yes, we are here to make me feel bad not you. So anything else? Yeah, yeah, I have one. Why are you divorcing me so easily? Your father caused problems but you were quiet. Why?"

"Because I am done with this. It's unnecessary chaos which I refuse to be part of. For my own peace and mental health, I am letting you go."

Dia chuckled, "for your mental health? Great." She took a deep breath through her mouth to control her anger. She did not think he could make her angrier than she had been before but he succeeded in proving her wrong. After being quiet for some time she looked at him and asked, "Your father won't cause any problem now? It's your mental health and your father. I should not be the one who has to pay for it. At least not my family."

"He is fine. He told me to sign the papers."

She frowned. "Why? Why is he so generous now?"

"Because he has a new plan. A new girl. Someone related to politics this time."

"Wow! Congratulations. But tell me." She leaned forward, resting her arms on the table. "What was his reason to approve me? My family has nothing to do with politics and we are not wealthy. Why me then?"

"A girl from a common house with a basic background sounded good for his reputation." She frowned. "It showed he was accepting."

"I don't understand your family and I don't understand why you are telling me everything."

"Because now I don't have to hide it from you. I have been hiding a lot from a lot of people. I would like one less."

Clenching her fist she looked at him with nothing beneficial in her mind. For her, his words seemed fictional with no reality in them but those words were more real than anything he had ever said.

"You should see a therapist," He said with sincerity, "It will make you feel better. I can tell from my experience."
She looked up at him, understanding nothing. He too looked up, looking like the first time she met him, calm and agreeable. "That's all I had to say. Let us never meet again. I will not cause any problem for you, you do the same for me. This is the end for us."

She nodded her head. "It is." She had a lot on her mind but could not convert it into words which caused her to remain quiet. He stood up and started walking but could not go beyond a few steps. Coming closer to her he said, "My therapist said it would feel good to say this. I do not agree but." He pressed his lips together as he paused to gather courage. "I am sorry." Not waiting for her response he walked away and stopped only when he was out of the coffee shop. There he looked at her through the glass wall. He spoke, not out loud, in his mind but with all his heart, "I hope you have a happy life ahead."

Dia sat alone in the cafe for some time. There was nothing she wished for but to be separated, far away from him. But when the time came she felt different than before. His lack of importance and fondness for her lowered her spirit. She was not the most important person, she was aware but she was the last, that did not come in her mind. She was loyal and sincere to him till the last day which caused more pain to her. In the last few months, she did not think that the divorce would make her sad. It would be a happy day, she thought. The memories of the past made its way to her. She was a happy child and a confident teenager. The World was a safe place where her smile was the prime ingredient of life. Life was about friends and happiness. Then he came and the world changed. It became better and happier. Everything was beautiful and he was an angel. Then came the time when things changed a little but were beautiful. Sooner than she released her life became harsh and he was a demon. Things became worse and finally broke her wings. At the worst, she met an old friend who again changed the wave. She thought things got worse but it became better. Then she met Anya's friend who became her friend. Thinking of him her heart calmed down. What Aman said was a delight. He was right, Samar made her feel better. Thinking of Samar she started thinking of Anya, and then she started thinking of them. Her heart was at ease thinking of the future she hoped for them. Their future gave her hope for a better life for her own self. She left the cafe with peace in her heart.

She took a different route than what Aman took, despite it being the route she had to take. It was an unknown route which she had never walked before. She was not aware where the road led but she was happy to be on a new one. She was confused and lost for some time. No one in her sight appeared to be helpful. Looking around again, gathering some courage, asking people she found a way that might lead to her destination. It was not certain, she was yet to reach her destination but she was happy as she moving. With doubts in her mind and confidence in her heart, she kept walking. Oh finally, she reached her destination, the station that would take her home. Peaceful and content she commenced another journey. In the end, as she was climbing the stairs she looked back and observed her former journey. An unknown road which she did not know existed brought her to where she wished to be. A smile played on her lips. With high spirit she resumed her journey, ready to write her life in her own words.
