Chapter Ten

Becky focused on her assignment. She had books spread all over the library desk. Studying was the only thing that kept her emotions at bay. Talking to Rob once a week for half an hour was so hard. His six week phone ban was well and truly over but for some reason he'd insisted they stuck to the routine with the occasional text every now and then. He said his study was so full on and that hers probably was too that the Saturday night phone call was something to look forward to and, to talk too often would take that thrill away. She had agreed and tried to keep upbeat so he didn't know how depressed she felt most of the time.

She put her pen down and opened her phone so she could look at a picture of him. He had sounded happier the last time they talked. Rob joked about the amount of abs he had. He said six packs were a thing of the past. Now it was ten packs. Becky grinned and didn't believe that was even possible. She sighed, closed down the phone and put it back into her bag.

"Nice to see you smiling."

Becky looked up to see Kane standing at her desk. She had avoided him at all costs since the day she had cried on him. Not that it'd been hard because he was in a completely different course not to mention a different year. However, he did live on campus. If she saw him she headed in the opposite direction. Becky bit back a grin remembering another boy telling her it was nice to see her smiling. What to say? She didn't want to encourage him but she needn't have worried because he saved her from having to answer.

"I see you've got your nose stuck in that phone again." Kane cocked his head. "I hope you haven't caused any more accidents." Man this was hard. He'd never had a problem with girls before, now he felt like some weirdo stalker.

She'd managed to avoid him for what seemed like forever and he still didn't know her name. How could he? There wasn't one person he knew in her year except the girl Demi but he didn't want to ask her without it looking suspect. Kane pulled out the chair opposite and sat. "So how's it going?" He glanced at her spread out books. "Are you coping?"

"Yeah." Becky nodded. "I think so."

"Anything I can help you with?"

"No." Becky dragged a text book toward her and focused on it hoping he'd get the idea that she wanted him to leave. "You're a vet student. I don't think any of our subjects would cross over."

Kane got the hint alright but he wasn't going to be deterred. His brain did a little dance. She remembered what he was studying. He grinned. What did he have to lose? "Look, Sapphire."

That got her attention. Her head bobbed up and a furrow formed on her brow. He raised his eye brows and tilted his head. "You won't tell me your name so I have to call you something." Kane smirked. "I just wanted to let you know you don't have to scurry in the opposite direction every time you see me. I'm not going to bite you. I know you're probably embarrassed because you cried on my shoulder. I guess I understand that, us being strangers and all but, it's okay."

He grinned as he continued, "I don't think you're a weirdo. I've consoled lots of girls. It's this magnetic thing I have. I guess it's because I'm tall with broad shoulders. Not to mention that I'm a nice guy." He shrugged. "And I'm not bad looking. Smart." He cocked his head again and said, "Did I mention smart? Better make that good looking, smart, tall, caring, and super nice guy. An all-rounder really. So I put no blame on you for crying on my shoulder. Like I said it's a magnetic thing."

Becky couldn't help it; she burst into laughter, and then slammed her hand over her mouth. She was in a library. Other students lifted their heads and glared at her.

Kane looked behind him, and then back at her. "You really are a trouble maker aren't you? Don't you understand library rules?"

"I...you..."

"Uh, uh." Kane held up his hand. "Don't try to blame me." He peered at her. "Is that your thing? You blame other people for the problems you cause."

"I haven't caused anything," Becky hissed as she craned her head toward him.

"Hmm... not the way I see it, Sapphire. You walk into me causing an accident and now you're making a ruckus in the library."

"Will you stop calling me that?"

Kane put his forearms on the desk and leaned forward. "Will you tell me your name?"

"Why do you want to know my name?" Becky couldn't help but smile. His cheeky grin was infectious.

"How else am I going to report you for causing trouble in the library if I don't know your name?" Kane gave her a stern look. "Nobody likes a trouble maker."

"I'm not a trouble maker." Becky gasped as her mouth struggled to stay serious.

"So you think making trouble is funny."

"How am I making trouble?" Oh she couldn't help but beam at him. If anything he was the one causing her trouble.

"Like you don't know." Kane leaned back in his chair and gave her a challenging look.

"I have no idea." Becky smirked. "I agree with my friend Demi. You really do need to improve your communication skills."

"Is that right?"

"Yes." Becky copied him by leaning back on her chair. She folded her arms as in a standoff.

Kane held up his palms and blew out his breath. "Okay. You win." He pushed his chair back and stood up with his palms on the table. "Basketball. Saturday night. At the Uni courts. Be there at seven." Without saying anything more he turned and walked away.

"But..." Becky lifted her hand and dropped it on the desk. What the hell just happened? She had no idea but for some reason her depression had vanished. Becky bit on her lip and tried to focus on what she had been doing. What was it she had been doing? She grinned, and then shook her head because she had no frigging clue.

Photo belongs to me and is of the beautiful Melbourne Library.   A much larger library than Becky would be sitting in.
