Chapter Fourteen

For two days Becky stewed on Rob's phone call and the Facebook tag. He had lied to her. That hurt more than if he'd just told her he wanted to go to Melbourne with his new friends. What did it mean? That was the question she'd been asking herself every moment she was alone. It meant his new friends were more important to him than she was.

Becky blew out her breath. He would eventually break up with her. She thought about all the invitations she had turned down so she could be available for his Saturday night phone call. Well no more. She wasn't going to sit around waiting for that last phone call where he'd tell her he'd met someone else. She thought about the Rob she knew. It would kill him to do that. Perhaps she should wait for that call.

Which one was it, Becky wondered? She'd stalked the three girl's profiles on every social media site, more than once. It made her feel ashamed because she didn't want to be that kind of girlfriend. How easy she'd slipped into the mould, franticly searching each of their public posts for any clue. Then comparing them all and Rob's to join dots so she could form a map of some sort.

As Becky walked back to her room, with her books cradled against her chest, she just knew it had to be the blonde. Genevieve fucking Connelly. Rob had always had a thing for tiny blondes. The memory of how he used to look at Lizzy came to her. A twinkling, fucking, Christmas gift, just waiting to be plucked from the tree.

GFC, Genevieve fucking Connelly, as Becky had nicknamed her, had the Lizzy look about her. Becky wondered if the bitch had put on some water works. That'd get him hook, line, and sinker.

The thought made her feel sick in the stomach. The brunette wouldn't be feminine enough for Rob and the redhead looked too much of a party girl. Wow. Did she really know him that well? A tear rolled down her face. Obviously not. She hadn't thought he'd ever go behind her back but here he was doing it.

Becky unlocked her door, dropped her books on the desk, and then threw herself down on the bed with her forearm over her eyes. She was so sick of crying. She madly wiped her tears away and slammed her arms down on the covers as she stared at the ceiling. What to do? She sighed and bit down on her lip. That question again. What to do?

Well she wasn't going to wait for that call. That was for sure. She might be a sack of sad shit at the moment but she still had some pride. With determination Becky pushed up off the bed. Demi. She'd ask Demi what she was doing Saturday night and go out with her.

"Hey, girlfriend." Demi beamed and opened her door wide. "Come in." She swept her hand inside and gave Becky a curious look. It appeared like she'd been crying. As they sat side by side on the bed she took hold of Becky's hands. "So what's up? Did that scorching boyfriend dump you?"

The sound that came out of Becky's mouth gave Demi her answer. "Oh, shit." She grabbed Becky in a crushing hug. "I'm so sorry. I was joking but... shit..."

"He... he... hasn't yet," Becky gasped and lifted her head to face Demi. "But I just know he's going to."

"What do you mean?" Demi stood and quickly grabbed her box of tissues before sitting back on the bed. "Here." She tore out numerous sheets and handed them to her friend. "Tell me what's going on."

Becky finished telling the story and dried the last of her tears. "I've decided I'm not going to say anything but, just never answer his calls." She sucked in a breath of air. "He's not stupid. He'll work out I've seen that Facebook post and will know exactly why I'm not answering."

"Isn't that a bit immature?" Demi scrunched up her face and cocked her head.

"Maybe." Becky shrugged. "I just can't face it. I'd rather let it fade away than have the big chat where excuses and promises will be made." She bit on the corner of her thumb. "Besides I'll be giving him an easy way out because he'll eventually have to break up with me." She took a breath and looked Demi in the face. "Lying doesn't come easy to Rob and I know breaking my heart will be one of the hardest things for him to do. It'd honestly kill him."

She gave Demi a rye grin. "Don't worry. I thought about letting him suffer like that but, he'd more than likely stay with me so he doesn't hurt me and I don't want that. I won't be a charity case." Another tear crawled down Becky's cheek. Perhaps that's why he'd stayed with her for so long. After all she was a charity case.

She hung her head as she dabbed away her tears. "I've been hurt before, Demi. By people I trusted. People who should have been there for me." She lifted her head. The back of her nose burnt with grief but she smiled all the same. "Rob knows this. In fact he saved me. He gave me life. If not for him I don't know where I'd be." Becky gripped Demi's hands. "I want to do right by him. I want to give him his life back so... I'm going to be the one who hurts him. It's the least I can do."

"What..?" Demi gave Becky a strained grin. "This sounds really twisted to me but I guess you know what you're doing."

"Trust me." Becky dragged Demi into a hug and murmured, "One day I'll explain it to you but for now..." she pushed Demi away, gripped her shoulders and gave her a beaming smile. "What are you doing tomorrow night?"

Poor Becky is really having a hard time with this.

I hope she makes the right decision.
