Chapter Four
Kane stood with his hands on his hips and watched her go. He couldn't believe that tackle had worked. She'd been so focused on her phone she hadn't seen him coming and man, did she feel good. He shook his head thinking about his hands on her body. He knew it was wrong but he couldn't help it. This girl was going to cause him problems in a big way. She looked over her shoulder, frowned, and then quickly spun forward. He could just about bet the meaning of what he'd said; concerning getting her attention, had kicked in because she looked shocked and confused.
He'd first seen her when she was waving to some guy getting into his car. Kane hadn't noticed any intimacy between them but that didn't mean there hadn't been any. The guy was tall, a good looking dude with dark hair, though not as dark as hers. He could have been her brother. At least Kane hoped so.
It wasn't until the car had driven away and she'd turned around fully that Kane had taken proper interest. The wind caught her white cheesecloth sundress, lifted it to reveal creamy slender thighs and a flash of pale yellow panties. She'd grabbed the dress quickly and swept her hand back over her forehead to brush the hair from her eyes. It was at that moment, while she laughed and caught her dress again did his stomach tighten at the sight of her. She had the face of a seraph. Her full red lips were open in humour and her sapphire blue eyes sparkled like crystals in the sun.
He'd followed her into the auditorium, watched where she sat, and then waited until she was settled and in conversation with the girl next to her, before slipping onto the seat beside her. He laughed at the thought. The only word she'd spoken was in response to his hello. The other girl, Demi, had done all the talking. He'd been hoping for an introduction but it hadn't happened. When she'd sat up rigidly straight, as he leaned in to talk to Demi, he had the impression she'd been scared. Her reactions had heightened his interest.
Kane was so sick of fake girls, plastered in make-up, hanging all over him, fluttering their eyes and wiggling their butts. This year was going to be different. He wanted a serious girlfriend. One night stands and meaningless sex were okay for a while but in the end you always finished up alone. This girl could be the answer to his prayers.
Now to find out who she was.

Rob was leaning against the car with his ankles crossed, his hands tucked in his armpits, looking at the ground. Becky surprised him as she ran her hands around his waist. "What's up?" she asked. "You look like you were miles away."
He chuckled, wrapped his arms around her and cradled her head against his chest. "Yeah." Rob sighed. "I'm not looking forward to tomorrow." He kissed the top of her head and rested his chin there. "I don't think I can do this, Becky. I don't think I can leave you."
His words brought tears to her eyes. Running her fingers across her cheeks to remove the dampness there Becky looked up at him and smiled. "Yes you can. We both can." She reached up on her tip toes and kissed his forehead. "You're gonna be a fighter pilot and I'm going to be a crime scene investigator or something." She cocked her head and shrugged. "I haven't completely decided yet." Becky smiled once more. "We'll be so busy with our studies we won't have time to think about anything else and every time we get together it'll be like meeting each other all over again."
Rob cupped her face and kissed her tenderly. How was he going to leave her? She was everything to him. He gasped back his sorrow and had to force himself not to cry; at least not in a car park full of strangers. "I love you so much, Becky," he whispered.
"And I love you." Becky stared into his eyes. Any thoughts of dreadlocked Kane had vanished the instant she saw Rob leaning against his car. Every time she was near him she felt warm and safe. "Come on. I think you better take me back to the motel." Becky smirked and jabbed him in the ribs. "I hope you ate your Weet Bix this morning because you're gonna need your strength."
Rob roared with laughter and lifted her bride style. "You make me so fucking happy. So fucking horny. Jesus girl. What will I do without you?"
"Use your hand, my friend," she whispered in his ear.
Rob laughed some more and opened the passenger side door, used his foot to push it wider and sat Becky on the seat. He smacked a kiss on her lips before closing the door and headed around to the driver's side. "Did you eat your Weet Bix this morning?" Rob clipped on his belt and beamed at her.
"Yes I did."

Kane watched the girl with the guy, who he now knew must be her boyfriend. This put a dampener on his high spirits. Of course she'd have a boyfriend. That'd explain her lack of interest in the hall but he was sure he'd seen a spark in her eyes when they were bantering over her phone. The fact that she had taken note of his name seemed promising. He shoved his hands in his pockets and slunk his shoulders. Best to forget about the girl with the beautiful sapphire eyes.
"Kane!"
He looked up to see Amy coming towards him. Like the idiot she was, she had assumed he'd been in the auditorium to see her. They'd had a thing the year before but Kane couldn't stand her constant chatter. He shouldn't have picked her up but she'd basically thrown herself at him and he hadn't had much choice.
Amy didn't believe you could enjoy someone's company by just being with them. She had to fill the silence with babble. He'd had to put a lid on it, because though he enjoyed talking, he hated prattle just for the sake of it. Why waste your breath on shit about movie stars or models. People you didn't know and would never meet. Twitter, Facebook and Instagram were all just a waste of time but Amy loved that crap. Kane smirked. She loved sex too.
As she grabbed his arm he wondered if he should go there again. His body was already on fire because of Sapphire. Fuck he'd given her a nickname. Shit. He looked at Amy. She might be the bucket of cold water he needed, to wipe the memory of the girl's body on top of his, from his brain.
"Hey, Aim's. What do you think you're doing?"
"Ah... Kane. Come on. You know what I'm doing." She laughed and swept her beautiful dusty locks behind her shoulder. "I've missed you. How about we hook up?"
Could he lift that lid again? She'd been hard to lock out. Nah. Couldn't do it. "Ain't gonna happen, Amy."
"What..? Why? You came and found me in the hall. I thought it was your way of telling me you wanted to get together."
"Amy. Stop." She was getting ahead of herself. Kane took her by the shoulders and made her face him. "It was great to see you but I didn't know you were there. I didn't think you'd waste your time going to that welcome shit all over again."
"Well, what were you doing there? You hate that crap." Amy tilted her head in what she thought was a cute pose and put her hand on his waist. She knew how physical Kane was and how to press his buttons. "I missed you."
"Honey." Kane smiled, pushed her hand away and cocked his head. "I haven't missed you."
"What..? You bastard!"
Kane jerked his head back. She'd slapped him so fast and hard across the face that the blow stunned him. "What the fuck!"
Amy strode away, and then turned back with her hands on her hips. "You are such an icy prick. I actually loved you. But guess what? You're not the only fish in the sea. And that's what you are. A slimy, cold, emotionless fish. No!" She stabbed her finger through the air at him. "We'll make that an octopus because that sums you up perfectly. All fucking tentacles, one big boner, no brain and no fucking heart!"
As she stormed off Kane grinned, and then yelled, "That's not true! Octopus have three hearts, nine brains and blue fucking blood for your information!"
Amy held up her middle finger.
Kane couldn't help but laugh. He rubbed his cheek. He probably deserved that because he was a bit harsh. But shit. That girl couldn't take no for an answer.
