Chapter Forty-Two

Kane was leaning against the brick wall just outside the club entrance with a big smile on his face as Becky stepped onto the pavement. "Hey." He reached out and took her hand. "I'm here."

"Well, look at you," Becky said with a grin on her face. She hadn't seen much of him for the rest of the night, just glimpses of him through the crowd as they'd bumped, jumped and head banged to the beat of the music. "You look very happy with yourself."

"Yeah..." Kane bobbled his head adding, "I'm pretty happy."

Becky eyed him with suspicion and asked, "Why?"

"Because I'm with my girl," Kane said as he slung his arm over her shoulders and moved off down the street with her. He looked around saying, "Where's your car?"

"Over in the lot." Becky nodded in the direction of her car, but kept eyeing Kane.  She asked, "Are you on something, Kane?"

"Nah..." Kane offered a lopsided grin. "I just had a good time."

"What were you drinking?" Though she had seen Kane drunk before, Becky felt his over excited facial expressions were due to more than just alcohol.

"Just the usual." Kane grinned again and pinched her cheek like a grandmother might, causing her head to jiggle. "What's with the interrogation? I had a good time."

"You seem different." Becky thought there was no tip toeing around what she needed to ask. She stepped out of his embrace and said, "I saw some guy give you what looked like a brown envelope. Was it drugs, Kane?"

With the grin never leaving his face, Kane yanked his head back. "Aw... look at you being all suspicious and fired up. Sexy. I like it, Sapphire," he said with a chuckle and put his arm around her shoulders again.

As he made to move toward the car Becky pulled out of his hold once more. "Kane! I'm serious. Have you taken drugs? Did you buy drugs from that guy?"

"What..?" Kane pushed his hair back with a hand on each side of his face and looked at her in disbelief. "No..." he said as the smile crept back onto his features.

"Well, what was it?" Becky said as she thrust her hands on her hips. "You're avoiding the question and playing dumb. I saw you take a brown envelope from that guy and put it in your pocket."

"Ah... come on, baby," Kane said with a chuckle. "It was a USB stick."

"Wow," Becky scoffed. "I've never heard that one before." She shoved out her hand and said, "Give it to me."

Kane laughed, spun around in a circle, and then took her in his arms murmuring, "Yeah. I want to give it to you."

"What the fuck is wrong with you?" Becky shoved him backwards. "This is not a joke! Show me the fucking USB stick or find your own way home."

"Whoa!" Kane held up his hands in surrender. "I'm just playing around. What the fuck is wrong with you?"

"I don't condone drugs, Kane, and I think you've taken something so show me this USB stick to prove me wrong."

"I've got a better idea," Kane said with a grin. He held his arms up in the air and as he stepped toward her he added, "You find it."

With a heavy sigh, Becky looked up at him. His face conveyed no concern but expressed a cheeky challenge which partially settled the ball of anxiety, which was thumping a screamo beat inside her chest. She stepped forward, patted him down, and then shoved her hand into one of his front pockets.

Becky almost jerked her hand away but instead smiled, and then grinned up at him. "You've got a fucking erection haven't you?"

"Ah...huh." Kane beamed down at her. "And what else?"

She drew her hand out and with it a brown USB stick. As she looked at it she felt heavy with guilt and peering back up at him said, "I'm sorry."

Kane scooped her up, holding her backside with his large hand. "I'm not. You're bossy little face turned me on."

"I can tell." Becky giggled. "Why would you push my buttons like that?"

Shrugging, Kane crossed the street, and then said, "I wasn't actually expecting to be accused of buying drugs in a nightclub." He laughed and added, "I buy my drugs from my drug dealer."

"Stop it." She gave him a light slap. "Drugs aren't a joke, Kane."

As he put her on her feet he said, "What's up with you and drugs?"

"I just don't like them." Becky walked to the driver's side, unlocked the car and looked at him over the roof. "Do you take drugs, Kane?"

He stood on the passenger side and rested his arms on the roof. "I'd be lying if I said I've never taken drugs."

"But do you?" Becky insisted.

"Occasionally." He lifted his shoulders. "At music festivals. Not every time, just now and then. Don't you?"

"No." Becky opened the car door but before getting in she said, "I've never taken drugs."

The drive back to the university car park was subdued. Becky stopped the hatchback but neither of them made an attempt to get out.

Kane broke the silence. The high he had been on no longer lifted his spirits. "Becky." He reached over, touched her chin, and then turned her face so she would look at him. "I'm not a drug addict."

"I know." She nodded and put her hand to his cheek. "I'm sorry if I implied it."

"I'm sorry if I made you think it. I was just feeling good and fooling around."

"I know that now." Becky dug in her pocket and held up the USB stick. "Here." As he took it she asked, "What's on it anyway?"

Kane grinned and nodded at the stick as he said, "More fucking study. That guy is in one of my study groups. I missed a tutorial so he copied his notes onto this for me to take a look at." He shoved it into his pocket, and then smiled over at Becky. Screwing up his mouth he said, "So... do I go home or come to yours?"

Leaning toward him, Becky put her lips on his and whispered, "You come to mine."

Damn you Kane! You had me going for a while.

I thought he'd bought drugs. What did you think?

Poor Becky. I can't blame her for being anxious that he might have bought drugs.
