Chapter Forty-One

This week's band had drawn a huge crowd. Becky shouldered through a group of guys with her tray. Live bands were the biggest draw card for The Square Circle and the type of band playing on any given week often changed the type of crowd that came to the club.

Tonight's band, Hell's Ice, was hitting the crowd hard core with covers of songs by famous emo and screamo bands, Asking Alexandria, Of Mice and Men, My Chemical Romance and Fall Out Boy. Becky had to admit, even though she wasn't a fan, the singer had an amazing screamo voice.

As she made her way to the tables, one of the guys in the group she'd just pushed past jumped in front of her with his tongue hanging out screaming along with the singer and air playing an imaginary guitar.

"Hey baby! Do you want to be the death of me!" he yelled as he jiggled in front of her.

Becky shook her head with a grin and turned sideways so she could shimmy between him and another black clad, skeleton adorned, dark haired guy. They were all dressed so much alike that it was hard to tell one person from another. Becky felt like a glowing fallen angel among a group of Satanists, being dressed in the white shorts and t-shirt that The Square Circle provided as a uniform.

The guy jumped in front of her again and bent to yell in her ear, "Come on! Come and have some fun with me!"

"I'm working! No time for fun!" Becky called back at him with a roll of her eyes as she moved forward.

He stopped her again by cupping her cheek with his hand as he spoke into her ear, "What about afterwards when you finish work? What time do you get off?" He straightened but left his hand on her face. The lights caught his vivid blue eyes as they twinkled with humour.

Becky was taken aback by the sight of them. She couldn't help but smile as he beamed at her while strumming her cheek with his fingers. "I think I'll be ready for bed by then," she said trying to avoid answering his question.

"Me too," he murmured as he leaned in once more.

Becky felt sure he was going to try and kiss her but before she could react he was yanked backwards and forced to face a scowling Kane. "What the fuck do you think you're doing, dude?"

"I'm hitting on this chick, wanker, so fuck off!" The emo's arm came up to push Kane's hand away.

"No. You're not! That's my fucking girlfriend!" Kane yelled and gave him a shove.

"Shit," Becky muttered under her breath as she stepped between them. She was sure Kane could probably take care of himself and he was taller than the emo but she hadn't been offended and would have averted the kiss if it had happened. She just didn't need Kane getting into a fight over her because she, along with all the girls who worked at The Square Circle, put up with this kind of crap every night they worked. Besides, the emo was kinda cute, with his blue eyes and black lipstick, and she didn't want to see his cheeky face beaten to a pulp.

"Please don't." Becky put her hand to Kane's chest. "It's alright. He hasn't hurt me and I'm not interested."

"Well, you looked pretty fucking interested to me," Kane accused.

The emo stepped forward so Becky shoved him away in anger. "Fuck off! He's my boyfriend and you've just pissed him off so now I'm pissed off. I'm not interested!" She grabbed Kane's hand and yanked him along behind her and into the hall that led to the toilets, where it was quieter, and then jabbed him in the chest with her finger. "What the hell, Kane? How can you accuse me of being interested in him?"

"I don't know." Kane ran his hand over his head in exasperation. "The way you smiled at him. It was in your eyes and he was going to kiss you."

"I wouldn't have let him!" Becky set the empty tray up against the wall with some force.

"Well you weren't pulling away!"

"I was just about to when you grabbed him." Beckyclosed her eyes and took a breath. Then she glared up at Kane, biting off thewords, "What the hell is going on with you? When have I ever given you the impression I'd play up on you?"

"I'm sorry. I don't know." Kane sighed and covered his face with his hands. His mind was spinning and the noise of the music was giving him a headache. He dropped his hands and put them on her shoulders. "I'm sorry. I walk in and the first thing I see is you standing out like a bright light in the dark with a big smile on your face while some guy has got his hands all over you. I saw red. I'm sorry," he said again.

"What are you doing here anyway?" Becky's temper plateaued when she saw the stress on his face. "I thought you were studying."

"Yeah." Kane nodded. "A friend in my course asked me to meet him here so I thought I'd come and hang with him while I waited for you." He took a step closer and put his hands on her waist. "I've had it up to my neck with study and thought a break would do me good and, I miss you."

Becky laughed and let him pull her closer. "We saw each other before I came to work."

A smile spread across Kane's face as he said, "I miss us. We see each other but over the last month it's just been moments here and there. When was the last time we fooled around, got close, snuggled or watched a movie?"

"I get it." Becky stood on tiptoe and put her arms around his neck. She smiled up at him and said, "The opportunities have been there but you've not taken them. I've been thinking you've lost interest in me."

"It's not you. I told you that last week." Kane kissed her forehead. "It's these exams. I don't want to fail. I don't have it in me to repeat a year to be able to graduate."

"So are you still into me?" Becky asked with a grin.

Kane cocked his head and smirked at her. "Didn't I just prove that to you?"

"So that caveman stunt was you proving you care?" As Becky spoke the image of Rob dragging her into a room at a party flashed into her head. The memory hit her so hard that it knocked the breath from her lungs and she started to cough. She quickly let go of Kane and stepped back.

"Are you okay?"

"Yeah." Becky pressed her back against the wall to stop Kane pounding on it as he tried to help her breathe. She sucked in some air. "Sorry," she said once she'd settled. "A tickle caught in my throat."

Kane put his hand to the side of her face and smiled. "I'd love to pick you up and carry you off into a dark corner right now but I don't want you to lose your job for making out with a customer." He kissed the top of her head.  "I better go and find my mate."

Becky gave him a grin and nodded. "Yeah. I better get back to it."

"I'll meet you out the front at closing," Kane said and put his lips on hers adding, "Maybe caveman will get lucky."

"Maybe," Becky said with a chuckle.

As she watched him disappear into the crowd a heavy feeling sat in her heart, she felt like she wanted to burst into tears. A ball of anger bloomed as she picked up her tray and thought of Rob again.

How dare that bastard keep interfering in her life? She sucked in a breath and headed back onto the floor just in time to see Kane shake an emo's hand, and then slip a small brown envelope into the pocket of his jeans.

Well, well, well, what's going on here then?

I'd love you to comment or vote so I know your there. xoxo
