Chapter 26
"Promise me you'll call 24/7." I told Brittany as she was sitting up in her hospital bed.
"I will, I promise." It's been a little over a week since we got to North Carolina and today we're leaving to go back home.
A couple of days after we got here Danny talked to Isaac and everything is better again. Brittany also has made really good progress physically. Mentally, though, I'm not so sure.
Todd Rawley was also caught a couple miles away from the hospital and has a trial date sometime towards the end of August, which is fast approaching.
I kissed Brittany on the cheek and left the room just as Alex was walking in.
As soon as the door was shut we all pressed our ears against the door and peered through the shades to get a sense of what was going on. Since the first day we got here Alex had barely left Brittany's side and we were always trying to know what was happening.
"I'll try and talk to you every day."
"I really want this to work." Brittany said really quietly
"We'll make it work."
"How do you know?"
He leaned down and kissed her cheek softly, "I promise. Take care of yourself Brittany." We all scrambled when he started walking towards the door.
"Bye Alex. See you later."
"Bye." He opened the door and looked at all of us with a confused expression. "What?"
"Oh nothing." Chris murmered.
"Mhm, sure."
Everyone made their way outside which only left Danny and I in the hallway. "I'm going to miss you." He said quietly
"We'll wait in the car Abby." Isaac called. I nodded at him and then turned to face Danny again.
"I'll miss you too." He hugged me really tightly and I felt a few tears fall. "Take care of her okay? If anything happens don't hesitate to call me and I'll come as fast as I can. Promise?"
"I promise." He pulled away and kissed my cheek then laughed a little bit.
"What?" I didn't think anything I said was funny.
"Doesn't this remind you of something?"
"Oh yeah, when we first said good bye."
He laughed gently. "I'll see you around Abby." He put his arm around my shoulders and walked me out to the car.
Being a gentleman as always he opened the door for me and then closed it gently. "Bye Danny." I turned around and watched him wave as the taxi driver pulled away.
We boarded the plane silently and as we took off I snuggled into Isaac.
"This trip must've been hard for you." He whispered.
"It wasn't super easy for you either."
"I get jealous because I care."
"What?" I looked up at him. His bright green eyes were looking down at me filled with an emotion I couldn't place.
"When we first got there I was really jealous of you and your friends. Especially the relationship you had with Danny. I just wanted to apologize for getting mad. I just get so jealous because I care and love you so much."
"Well I love you too." I leaned up and pressed my lips to his.
"You better."
"Oh hush. Way to ruin the moment."
"I didn't ruin anything." He pouted and shifted in his seat and tickled my side.
"Isaac!" I whisper yelled. "We're in public!"
"I know." He kept tickling me and as I was laughing hysterically I saw a little boy smiling at us.
"Isaac people are looking, stop."
"I don't care if people are looking."
"Why not?" He stopped tickling me and looked directly into my eyes.
"Because I want people to know how much I love my girl." He gave me a big wet kiss on the cheek and laughed as I squeeled.
"Ewh!" I said as I wiped his spit off of my face.
"How rude." He stuck up his nose and turned towards the window.
"Isaac." I wined
Nothing.
Was he ignoring me?
"Isaac."
I put my face right up next to his and lightly licked his cheek.
"Ahhgh! Did you just lick me?" He said with an amused expression.
"I did indeed."
"This is going to be a long flight."
"It will indeed."
Throughout the flight I found it increasingly hard to sleep as did Isaac so we passed the time by watching movies and messing with Alex and Chris who were just across the aisle.
"What does the cow say to the human farmer?" Isaac was saying to Alex
"I don't know, 'don't eat me please?'" He sighed
"No you idiot, the cow said moo."
"You're the idiot."
"I am not. You're the one who thought cows could talk."
"Well I think you're both idiots and my opinion is the only one that matters, so there." Chris said with his eyes still closed.
I curled up and put my head in Isaac's lap as my eyes began to close. I subconsciously noticed his hand slowly move to my head and push my hair back behind my ear.
"You okay?" He whispered and I jump slightly as his breath tickled my ear.
"Yeah, just tired." He hummed in agreement and started rubbing circles around my back which made me fall asleep almost immediately. "I love you baby." I heard him say lastly.
~°~°~°~°~°~
"Well doesn't this bring back memories." Alex spread his arms wide and motioned towards the baggage claim.
"You mean where Abby made you look like a bloody bloke." Isaac had his hand wrapped around my waist gently and I snuggled into him.
"I wish I had been able to see that." Chris laughed
"We sure have come a long way." I turned to Isaac and smiled like a complete idiot as I stood on my tippy toes and kissed him on the lips.
"And I don't regret a single minute of it." He smiled against my lips and pulled me closer.
"I love you Isaac Crawford."
"I love you too Abigail Grace Taylor."
"Awh I love you guys too." Alex wrapped his arms around us both and soon Chris joined in.
"Well this is great except I can't breath."
"What? You should be greatful, you not only have one attractive guy hugging you in public, but two." Alex said without moving to let go.
"Hey what about me?" Chris wined from somewhere above my head.
"You're average."
"Well I think you're all attractive and I enjoy the hugs, I really do, but you're all suffocating me, and I really don't enjoy that all that much."
"Wait, you think we're all attractive?" Isaac asked bewildered
"Well I mean, I obviously find you most attractive but-"
"Hey that's not fair to us!" Chris wined
"Well I mean-"
"It's completely fair-" Isaac pouted
"It is not! Just because you're her boyfriend doesn't mean she has to find you most attractive-" Alex argued
"Boys! I am suffocating!" I exclaimed loudly
"Abby, be quiet. The men are talking." Alex quickly dismissed me while still hugging everyone.
"Ugh!" I stomped on his foot and then elbowed Chris who was behind me. "You all are infuriating." I untangled myself and then took a breath of fresh air. My cheeks immediately flared red in embarrassment as I realized people were staring as they passed by.
"You know, you should stop caring what people think about you. Especially ones that you probably won't ever see again." Alex whispered in my ear which made me jump.
"And you should stop being an idiot." I looked at him pointedly.
"Well some habits cannot be so easily broken."
"Or broken at all in my opinion."
"Quit harassing my girlfriend." Isaac came around and wrapped his arms around my waist from behind.
"I'm not harassing your girlfriend, I'm harassing my sister. Who by the way just said I would be an idiot forever."
"Well she wasn't wrong."
"C'mon guys, let's go get our bags before someone takes them, Kenny is probably waiting too." Chris butted in.
"Kenny can wait a couple minutes, it won't kill him." Alex pointed out
Isaac took my hand and we made our way to baggage claim. He grabbed both our bags and all four of us made our way outside where I saw Kenny standing next to his car looking rather impatient.
"It took you guys long enough." He opened the trunk and helped us put our bags in. "I've been waiting out here for like twenty minutes."
"Oh keep your pants on, will you? You can last twenty minutes by yourself." Alex snapped. Kenny got into the car mumbling things under his breath. I caught the words "arse" and "arrogant kid" before he got into the driver's seat and slammed the door.
"No 'welcome back?' He's more lacking in his niceties than usual." Alex muttered before getting into the backseat.
Chris got into the passenger seat and I found myself in the back next to Isaac and Alex on the other side of him. Kenny took off out of the pick up area faster than he should have and soon we were on the main road.
"Can we listen to the radio?" Isaac asked beside me. Chris turned on the radio and we all lapsed into silence again with it playing quietly.
"Turn it up!" I said a little too loudly, I immediately started singing. "It's been a long day without you, my friend."
"And I'll tell you all about it when I see you again." Alex started blasting out the lyrics with me.
We both continued to sing until Chris joined in and we all looked at Isaac.
"Sing!" I told him
"I don't want to."
"I can see it in your eyes, Isaac. C'mon, pleasee?"
"Oh I'll tell you all about it when I see you again!" He sang
"Stop!" Kenny yelled. I was so stunned that I couldn't help but stop and look at him. At first he looked really mad, but then his faced softened and he smiled. "This is my part." We all started laughing as Kenny started rapping. "Dang, who knew? All the planes we flew. Good things we've been through. That I'll be standing right here talking to you. 'Bout another path, I know we loved to hit the road and laugh. But something told me that it wouldn't last. Had to switch up-" He stopped suddenly and I felt the car swerve.
I heard it before I saw it. I turned just as the truck hit Kenny's car on the passenger side and we went spiraling out of control. My vision was going in and out and I couldn't hear anything but ringing when the car hit something else and everything was still.
Everything stopped. I looked around and could just see my mother and father holding hands in the front seat, my head hurt but I didn't know why. I looked to my right and saw a man getting out of the large truck and pulling out his cell phone.
"Abby... Abby... Abby, wake up."
My eyes snapped open and it took me a second to realize what happened. "Mom!"
Isaac was leaning against the window but his hand was on my arm, shaking me gently. "Abby, you're okay, stay with me okay?"
"Where's my mom?!" I tried to turn my head but sharp pains kept me from moving. "W-where's my dad?!"
"Abby, you're with us. Kenny, Alex, Chris, and I. I'm Isaac, Abby. C'mon you have to calm down." But I couldn't calm down, I couldn't get the image of my mom and dad out of my head. I couldn't do anything.
"I have to get out!" I yelled, but my voice was hoarse. "I have to get out!" My hands started shaking uncontrollably and I was hyperventilating.
"Abby, please." Isaac coughed next to me and reached for my shaking hand. "You have to stay calm."
"Why isn't anyone else awake?!" I tried calming down but nothing was working, the walls were closing in, the walls are closing in.
The man in the fireman's uniform came up to the window and began cutting the glass. I couldn't see mommy and daddy anymore, where's mommy and daddy?!
"Just stay calm sweetheart, I'm going to try and help you."
"Where's mommy and daddy?!"
"Just stay calm and we'll get you out of the car."
I screamed as something sharp hit my right arm. The car had moved slightly.
"I have to get out! Isaac please!"I was screaming and shaking uncontrollably, I didn't feel any pain, just terror. "I have to find them, please help me!" Something moved on my right side and I jerked my head to see it but pain shot through me like a bullet. I screamed out in pain and Isaac squeezed my hand tightly.
"Abby?" Alex groaned, it seemed like he was trying to move.
I heard voices before I woke up and saw the bright white light.
"What's going on?" My voice was small and high-pitched. My eyes immediately found Aunt May. "Aunty? Aunty where am I? Where is mommy and daddy?"
"Hush darling, just rest right now."
"Abby, wake up!" Isaac was shaking me again, I was too tired to tell him it hurt.
"I have to find my mom, my mom and my dad are gone." I was saying. "Where are they?"
"Abby, people are going to come and help us. Just stay awake."
"Isaac it hurts." I glanced at him and saw that he still hadn't moved his head, there was a line of blood running down his cheek.
"I know baby, I know. Try not to move, okay? If you don't move it won't hurt so much."
"Baby, just don't move. I know it might hurt but the doctor's are coming with some medicine." Aunty was saying softly
"But where are mommy and daddy?" A voice behind her said something quietly.
"There's no point in keeping it from her May."
"I just don't like to see her hurting."
"Aunty May, where are mommy and daddy?"
"Isaac, I'm scared, I don't know what's going to happen. I don't want to go through this again."
"Abby, baby, just keep talking to me, keep talking to me and everything will be alright."
"I don't want my parents to leave, I don't want anyone to leave."
"Abby, I'm not going to leave you. No matter what, I am not leaving you."
"Everyone leaves me."
"Abby, your mommy and daddy are in a better place." I couldn't help the tears from falling.
"What do you mean Aunty? Why aren't they here?"
"They're gone sweetheart," She took a shaking breath. "they died in the crash."
"They died?"
"I'm so sorry baby."
"They're dead?" I didn't understand what Aunty was saying, why is everything so confusing?
"They're dead."
"Abby, c'mon. You have to stay with me." I felt like my entire body was going to explode, the walls, the walls were closing in and no one but Isaac was awake. I was shaking and I couldn't stop, my whole body was shaking. I couldn't stop my fast breathing, I couldn't control anything. All I wanted to do was sleep. "Abby, please. Please, you can't leave me, Abby, please." Isaac was shaking me again, but it was all too much, too much.
My eyes slipped closed and everything was black.
