CHAPTER TWENTY-SEVEN
When Lucas hoped that the lunch would not be awkward, he was wrong. Because now sitting here, he couldn't feel any less uncomfortable. There was this unpleasant silence in the air that was eating him alive.
"So...Iris, you have studied what?"
"I have a master's degree in criminal psychology."
"Is that so."
He looked around the room, trying to see if anyone else sparks up a conversation but Arthur is minding his own business. He just said a simple hi to Iris and that's it. Logan was also minding his own business by focusing on eating. Vanessa was helping with Mia on how to use the fork and knife to cut the piece. Lucas felt really weird. He needed some way to make Logan and Arthur talk to each other. Their so-called fight wasn't that big, it was just extended due to both refusing to communicate.
"So...Logan. How's your job going?"
Logan raised his brow at Lucas, pondering about what he's planning.
"It's fine."
He gave a short answer, not wanting to talk into details
Arthur scoffed at his response. Logan rolled his eyes at him internally.
"I see.....umm Dad, did you know Logan bought a new car a month ago? It's a real beauty."
Lucas deliberately touched the topic of a car knowing full well that both liked cars.
"Do I look like I care?"
His father gave a cold response. With a stern look in his eyes he added after a pause,
"I already know it's going to be a Lamborghini..."
Logan flinched, surprised that his father does know about him. Maybe he should talk to him after all, it has been a year.
"Dear, Logan and Iris wanted to talk to you about something."
Vanessa finally speaks turning to her husband who just takes a bite of his meal, without saying anything.
"Why aren't you speaking? What is it?"
He said after a moment of silence because Logan and Iris assumed that he didn't want to talk.
"Oh..."
Iris's face its up
"About that..."
Logan adds,
"We need to find my dad. You know where he is so we need your help. Please."
Iris requests,
Vanessa and Lucas's eyes go round at this revelation. Iris had forgotten that these two believe that Nicholas is dead.
"He is dead. You can find him in the grave."
Arthur replies, finishing his lunch and taking a sip of his drink
"No, he isn't. We know that he is alive."
Lucas and Vanessa, leaves along with Mia to give them all privacy to talk.
"And what am I supposed to do?"
"You are in contact with him. Tell us where he is."
Logan states
"I don't know what you're talking about."
Arthur shrugs,
"Don't lie, old man. You helped him see Ava get married."
Logan remarks, calling his father an old man
"And what proof do you have?"
"You have to believe us. Please, Sir, Don't do this. I know you are trying to help dad by keeping his secret but Frederick saw you and dad together. He is in trouble. They all know that he is alive so they will come after him. And the USB. Which he gave to me........."
Iris pleads after Arthur's question
"Listen, you are a good girl so my advice for you would be to stay away from The Mercurial. They will follow you to the ends of the world and won't rest until you and everyone you know are tortured and dead. Even if you have the USB, just give to someone else and turn away. Don't try to a pick a battle you won't be able to win."
Arthur explained
"Coward."
Muttered Logan
"What did you just say?"
Arthur glared at his youngest son
"You are a freaking coward. In order to save yourself you run away when a big challenge is thrown at you. You are doing the same thing right now and you did the same thing a year ago when you refused to see the truth."
Arthur gets up in fury, angered by his son's accusations
"I am not a coward. I did what I had to protect my family and I am still doing that. Someone, who recklessly runs into a situation without thinking about the result will never understand how hard it is. And one more thing, I refused to see that truth because there was no proof."
"No. You played it safe. You never took any risk and that is why you are still hiding away and obeying those people. I maybe reckless but at least I do the right thing instead of letting others control how I live my life. Also, even if there is no proof, you should always trust a person whom you believe in. But I guess you never really believed in me from the start."
"I don't want to hear all that from someone who left the army instead of standing up. Then going ahead and working with those same people whom you should be against with."
"You're the one who made me do that and that was the first and last time I will ever let you make me do something I did not want to do. And I am not with them. I never was and never will be. The problem is simple, you never believed in me and that's it."
Iris saw both father and son argue with each other. She noticed that the topic had quickly shifted from her mother to some other event. Assuming that they must be talking about the thing that made them fight in the first place. Logan had said that it happened a year ago.
"Umm...please don't fight..."
She interrupted politely but got ignored
"That's not the true. You are the one who did not believe me and listen to me."
"That's because you were being a coward and irrational once again."
"Irrational? You're the one who went straight ahead, without thinking."
"I did think and I tried telling you but you are stubborn as hell!"
"Logan...let's just focus on what we came here to do...."
Iris tries to calm Logan down, who gets up. Iris also reflexively follows him.
"You talk to him. I am done talking. I'll wait for you in the car."
He then leaves before anyone could say anything
Arthur sighs and slumps back into his chair
"Umm...."
Iris felt really uncomfortable. She didn't know what to do. Should she just start asking about her father?
"That boy....just what am I going to do with him? I am really sorry you had to see that."
He breaks the silence by apologising
"Ah no, it's fine. Actually...."
"About Nick. Yes, I am in contact with him. Somewhat. We meet once or twice a year. I do not know where he is now except that he wanted my help to see his daughter's wedding."
He gives in and finally explains
"How do you two contact each other?"
"We have our secret codes. We put letters in specific places and the other gets them."
"Can I ask you for a favour?"
An idea hits Iris and she turns to her father's friend
"I guess. Although I do have a condition. It's more like a request."
Iris waits for him to continue
"I know it may seem weird but if you can please don't let Logan do something reckless."
He adds making Iris blink in surprise. She then smiles and inquires,
"Do you care about him?"
"....it's not that. He just doesn't care about his own life at all cost."
"Uh..huh....I have a question. If you don't mind telling me but why are you so angry at Logan?"
