CHAPTER THIRTY-ONE
"This is Helga and her money got stolen."
Max introduces an old, skinny, wrinkled woman with bobbed white hair to Ella and Iris. It was an average shelter home for the elderly, smaller than most places for old aged people.
"Helga won a lottery last week and after bringing the money home, it got stolen from her safe which is protected by a code."
Max explained the case while Iris and Ella looked around her room which she shared with a paralysed Rita. They studied the safe, in the bottom drawer hidden behind a lot of clothes.
"Helga does not have any family left. She never had any children or siblings. Her only companion, her husband died eight years ago."
Max states. The three of them were standing outside in the garden and whispering to each other.
"So, it's not family. Then what about friends? The lottery was of $80,000. A lot of people who know her could be interested in it."
Iris questions.
"Umm excuse me."
They turn around to find a middle-aged woman wearing the staff's clothing holding a tray with three glasses of lemonade.
"They are for you. For helping us."
"Oh thank you."
Ella speaks for all of them, each taking their own glass
"We really owe you for helping Helga. That poor woman deserves the happiness and money. I helped her a lot with buying the lottery. It's not fair what happened."
The woman adds
"Yeah. What's your name?"
"My name is Freya."
"Freya, how did Helga came to this old home?"
Iris inquired. None of them had drunk the juice yet.
"I believe it was her neighbour and friend. Helga was all alone and wouldn't leave her house. She wouldn't even go to the neighbours because she felt she was imposing and bothering them. They persuaded her to come here because this way she can meet others of her age and make some friends. She does come to visit from time to time."
"When was the last time she visited?"
Max inquires after her explanation
"I think it was the day that Helga won the lottery. She came to celebrate."
"I see. Thank you for sharing."
Ella smiles after which she leaves
"I think it's that friend who did it."
Max states
"I don't think so. | mean that woman is her friend and she obviously cares about her so she wouldn't do something like that."
Ella retorts, shrugging
"Then who do you think did it?"
Iris inquires
"I think somebody from here did it. They must have easy access and after talking to Helga they would know the code or where she put the money in. I bet it's her roommate!"
"Her roommate?"
"The one who has been paralysed for eleven years and is now bedridden for five years?"
Iris and Max narrows their eyes at Ella's comment
"Yes. She could have faked it! I have seen it in a lot of movies."
She exclaims, confident in her point of view
"Right well you need to start watching some other movies."
Max rolls his eyes
"I do agree with Ella, though. Not the roommate part because that's crazy. Only the thing that the person who did it must be in the inside."
"Okay then, you both start asking questions around here while just in case I'll go ask Henry to search for the friend."
Max says, they all nod in agreement
"Now, hurry up and drink the lemonade so we know it's not poison and we can then drink it."
Ella remarks
"What? Poisoned? Seriously?"
He then looks at Iris and her full glass,
"You believe her?"
"I have watched some of those movies with her so it wouldn't hurt. Hurry up and take a sip."
She shrugs
"Well if it's poison then why do I have to drink it?"
"Because you don't believe it is."
"Fair enough."
Max then drinks the lemonade. He gulps the glass in one sip and after finishing it starts choking, gasping for air.
"Oh my god! We were right!"
"Nope. He's faking it."
Iris states after Ella's remark. Max who was acting, starts laughing,
"Gotcha!"
"You will pay for this."
Ella punches his shoulder
After half an hour they meet up at the same place.
"That friend is abroad. Apparently one of her son with his family lives overseas so she spends 6 months over there."
"See, I told you that it wasn't her. If she's rich enough to travel means she does not need the money."
Ella remakes
"Guess you were right. What about you?"
"Well, most of the residents have dementia so they don't even know who Helga is. Others that do know about her are just too old to steal. Also they did not see anyone suspicious enter."
Ella replies to which Iris adds,
"However I questioned the staff and that woman, Freya, from before is Helga's personal nurse who takes care of her."
"You think it's her?"
"Maybe. I just need to ask Helga one more thing."
A moment later they are besides the old woman in her room.
"Freya mentioned she helped you with the lottery. What does that mean?"
"I was short of money to buy the lottery so she gave me the rest."
"And how much was her share going to be from the lottery?"
"$15,000. According to how much she gave me."
"Freya's a sweet woman to help Helga."
Ella remarks to which Helga nods and smiles, "She really is."
"She didn't take her share. Why?"
Iris continues with her questions
"She said she didn't need it. I had won the lottery so I should keep it."
"Aww, she really is a good woman."
Ella again remarks at the nurse's good character
"No, she isn't. I solved it. I know what happened. Freya wanted all the money so she lied to Helga about not wanting it. And then stole it because she is the only one who knows all about Helga! Ha! I'm a genius."
Iris grins, feeling proud of herself
