CHAPTER FORTY-SIX

A gust of wind from the blast and the building crumbling along with the cliff falling forces back the surrounding areas. The rumbles and the remains due to the explosion falls a few feet apart. Alex who is waiting for her friends in the lake to come back, takes cover to protect herself.

Iris and Luke successfully manage to pull the unconscious Logan to the shore. But both are panting and coughing.

"Check his pulse...I don't think he's breathing...."

Alex who comes rushing states. Iris using his wrists tries to check his pulse but her face soon goes pale.

"I can't feel anything......"

She mutters.

"This can't be. Do you even know how to check the pulse?"

Alex retorts, taking his wrist from Iris to check his heartbeat. After a few moments she adds,

"There is a pulse...but it's weak..."

Luke who was coughing due to the smoke that had gotten in his throat comes forth and motions Alex and Iris to move.

"Step aside..."

He starts performing CPR on him. While Iris keeps glancing back at the destroyed building. She kept thinking about her father whom she did not see fall into the water. She had an inkling feeling that he was not with them anymore but a tiny string of hope still lingered in her heart. She then turns to Logan who still wasn't breathing, causing her to become more anxious.

Fortunately, thanks to Luke, Logan gasps for air after coughing water out of his mouth. He doesn't sit up right away because his forehead was bleeding along with, there was an iron rod in his leg. They didn't know how deep it was but it looked pretty painful.

"Thank god!"

"Dude, you had me scared there for a second..."

Logan starts coughing while trying to sit up. He groans in pain as he blinks. His brain flashes back to everything that happened in the last ten minutes. Last he recall was going after Nick who was trying to keep those people away from the bomb. He was too close. Shit. This can't be. Nick cannot be dead. Memories of Nick starts flickering in front of his eyes. He quickly turns to look at the now destroyed rubbles on the ground over the lake. From the looks of it, no one could have stayed alive. He thought when his eyes then fell on Iris. He gulps and speaks in a low trembling voice,

".....sorry...."

He didn't know if it was the smoke that was getting in his eyes or was it him remembering the times he spent with the person he idealised and how they can never have those times back, but his eyes were becoming glossy.

Iris's eyes go round at Logan's remark. Why is he apologising? It's not his fault at all. She holds his hand in an assuring way and replies,

"Don't be. It's not your fault. It's no ones fault. You have nothing to apologise for."

Logan doesn't reply anything in return except a grimace of pain appears on his pain. She hoped it was not because of blaming himself. Although she knew that it could be because of injuries. They still have to take the iron rod out of his leg, which looked pretty terrible.

"Okay, we need to get this out before we go back."

Luke remarks. They all knew that it would be painful because of that Alex puts his hand over Logan's mouth so that he doesn't scream while Iris holds Logan's hand and tells him to look at her instead of Luke who was about to pull the iron rod out.

Luke counts to himself till three and quickly pulls the rod, while Logan winces, tightening his grip on Iris's hand in pain making her feel like her hand was getting crushed but she doesn't complain.

"Luckily the wound isn't that deep....."

Luke remarks after throwing the iron rod away.

"We need to get out of here quick."

Alex adds to which Luke nods in response. They all get up as Logan leans on Luke to help him walk.

"I....uh....."

They turn to Iris who looks hesitant. They already knew what she going to say.

"Just one look. I promise I'll be quick. I need to find him...if I don't...."

Before she could finish, Alex moves towards her and says,

"Let's go. You two go back we will be there soon."

They then part ways in groups of two. Alex and Iris then run towards the debris spread all over the place.

"Dad!"

She shouts followed by Alex's exclaims,

"Nick!"

"Dad!"

Iris looks at a few dead bodies she notices collapsed on the ground. But leaves to search somewhere else when she sees that they're not her father.

"Dad!"

She steps on something soft, only to look down and find that it's someones left arm. She kneels to see who the arm belongs to and sees her dad's face covered in blood. He was crushed under a huge, heavy piece of concrete. Only his upper half was visible under the debris.

"Dad....."

Tears starts rolling down her face without even blinking. She spent years trying to find him just so she could have him back in their lives only to lose him again. Why did this had to happen? She felt like she couldn't breath. On the background she could hear Alex's voice and footsteps,

"Nick!"

"Iris, what are you doing here? Did you find...."

Alex bends down next to Iris but stops talking after seeing Nick. She again calls out to Iris, this time more softly but Iris's gaze is stuck on the lifeless body of her father.

Suddenly, Iris starts gasping for air. She was breathing in an abnormally rapid rate. Tears were also streaming down her face.

"Iris! Are you okay?....you're hyperventilating!"

Alex exclaims with worry. She becomes frantic, not knowing what to do. Then remembering how she once saw this on tv, she turns to her bag pack and brings out a brown paper bag. Throwing all its contents away, she gives it to Iris to breath into while softly caressing her back.

"Just breath....take deep breaths...."

"He is.....dead....for real......"

Iris speaks in between making Alex feel sorry for her friend. Not knowing what to reply she simply settles with,

"Yeah....he is...."
