CHAPTER FIFTY-SIX
"You all will have to go hide somewhere for a little while after this, you know that right?"
Logan stated while driving his car. This one was a normal SUV. Next to him was Duncan wearing a mask and a cap. Logan himself was wearing simple glasses and a black cap.
"Yeah. George said he has this place up in the northern areas which is isolated, so we will lay low there for a while."
Iris replied. She was sitting at the back seat, wearing a simple mask to cover her face.
"Oh, after this, can you drop me back at my house? I thought I could pick up some things..."
She added.
"Are you sure that's a good idea? Wouldn't Rikky be observing that place?"
Duncan questioned, raising his brow
"I'll be quick. And if there are people keeping an eye then I won't go there."
"Rikky never does what he says. I am pretty sure he will go behind our backs to try to kill you and everyone."
"If only we had some sort of thing against him to threaten him or at least make him not come after us. I wonder where he keeps all the track and data."
"He doesn't. He told me how instead of keeping track of everyone and everything like his father, he just does what he thinks. If he doubts someone then without even looking for proof, he will just go ahead and kill him. According to him, if that person is innocent then he did good to the world because there is so much over population, if not then mission accomplished."
Logan explained
"Damn."
"He still hasn't changed."
"Why were you guys even friends with him?"
"He would approach us, plus he is good at playing the drums so..."
"I see. Well, where are we going first?"
"To meet our new chief of army."
"Is he any good?"
"Yeah. He is the one who warned us about the trap."
"Although we were late to stop it but still he is the only one out there who can hold against the current chief because of their feud."
"If that is the case then it's fine."
"We will only go to meet him in secret without coming in contact with anyone else."
Duncan explained as Iris hummed. After fifteen minutes of silence she added,
"Hey, have you always worn glasses?"
"No."
Logan replied
"Then are these fake?"
"No."
"Then...."
Iris raised her brow. Duncan started snickering,
"I know how he got these glasses. Once he got his eyesight checked and there was only less than .5 difference in his left eye. The doctor said it wasn't necessary for him to wear glasses and that difference could be healed by diet but he was still given these just in case for when he used the laptop, tv or phone."
"Oh so it's basically fake."
They all chuckled at Iris's remark
"I was going to wear my sunglasses but I lost them a while back that's why I wore these today."
"Well they suit you."
"Thanks."
After half an hour of driving, they finally reached the army base. They were able to go inside thanks to their old contacts but once inside they parked their car at an unnoticeable corner. Duncan and Logan got off and told Iris to stay put. She decided to lay down to not seen by anyone.
But just after five minutes, she hears footsteps approaching. Not moving her place that much, she gets up just enough to see Logan and Duncan approach the car. They quickly sit back down at their seats.
"That was quick."
"Yeah because we didn't get to meet him."
"Why?"
"We ran into someone whom we would like to kill."
Duncan hissed, cracking his knuckles. Iris blinked in confusion,
"Huh?
"We were on our way to his office but at the entrance of the building,"
Logan motions at the glass door where a late middle-aged man stood with two other people,
"He is standing. He knows us. If he recognised us it will be trouble."
"He is the one responsible for the deaths of our comrades! That god damn bastard! Oh how much I want to crush that smirk of his face."
Duncan sneered at the guy standing far way, oblivious to the death glares he was getting from two guys. Logan although wasn't saying anything, he was angry.
"So we just need to get him out-of-the-way. Does anyone have a phone?"
"Why?"
Logan starts bringing out his own. This one was his personal one and not the other one he had.
"I left mine back at the house."
She quickly takes it from him and starts typing something.
"We can wait it out. He can't keep standing there for that long."
Duncan added, Logan nodded in agreement.
After five minutes Duncan complained,
"It's been hours! For god sake, move man! Get out of there, already!"
"It's only been five minutes."
Logan reminded him making him groan due to frustration,
"The people he were talking to have already left but he is standing there drinking his coffee."
"Hey, just what are you doing?"
Logan turned back to look at the busy Iris who was reading something with attention.
"Okay got it. I will distract him and then you guys can go in."
"What are you planning?"
"I'm going to act as a reporter."
Iris starts taking off her mask and ties her hair up in a pony tail.
"Hey give me your glasses."
She adds, taking them from Logan.
"Just what are you going to even talk to him about?"
"Recently, one of his mining place that he owns, collapsed for no reason. Around 60 people died. He was given a lot of money for compensation. There were many questions arose at him for planning all this. But until now no one has taken his interview. So I will do that."
After getting ready, she looks up and adds,
"So, do I look like a reporter or what?"
"The glasses suit you."
"Although, there's something missing."
"Oh here."
Logan brings out a notepad and ball pen from the draw and hands it to her.
"Don't you need some sort of pass or anything?"
"....that's true. Don't you both have anything?"
"Nope."
"You can use that though."
Logan points at one of the table in front of an ice cream van at one corner of the parking lot. On that very table, a woman had left her purse and id out while she herself was busy buying ice cream.
"That's stealing."
Iris objected
"No, that's borrowing. You can put it back there after we are done."
Duncan smirks at Logan's comment.
"Well here I go. I am taking your phone with me though."
Iris gets out and quickly walks away. Duncan and Logan decide to wait a few minutes before heading inside.
Iris walks in a quick pace and as she passes by the very table, she swiftly picks up the card and wears it. Without stopping she passes by the man himself deliberately and goes straight to the reception.
"Hi. I am here for an interview with Mr. Carter."
"Do you have an appointment?"
"He is expecting me. Although I am a bit late so I really hope that's not much of a problem."
"Wait let me check. Your name, please."
Iris then turns to look at the man in a suit standing, drinking his coffee.
"Oh no need. I will go talk to him right away. There he is."
Iris quickly starts walking away, with the confused woman calling behind her,
"Wait, ma'am. You can't talk to him without an appointment."
"Hello Mr. Carter."
Iris ignores the woman and puts her hand in front of the man.
"Who are you?"
"I am Hailey from the TM news, here for an interview with you about the recent mining events."
Iris puts two fingers on the id, hiding the name and picture, and bristly flips it for the guy to see.
"Sir, I am extremely sorry. She doesn't have an appointment."
The woman from before came rushing.
"Sorry, I don't give interviews without appointments."
"I know, Sir. But I came here for your special interests. Have you seen the news lately? They're blaming you. Soon enough you will be called to the court. I can help you."
"....I am listening."
He added after a pause, in between he motioned his assistant to go away.
"Well are we going to keep standing here and talk?"
"Fine, let's go to my office. But this better be good and you better hope it doesn't turn out to be a waste of my time."
He starts walking away, with Iris following him giving a smirk,
"I assure you, it won't."
