Dawn's P.O.V.

After Charlotte had explained to us how the device worked Thomas and I were brought to another room to prepare ourselves for our journey.
I felt the nerves swimming in my stomach but at the same time I'd never felt more ready. This was my chance to make up for my mistake. I could make up for being the reason my friends got kidnapped and almost killed. I could only hope Janson would believe my story.

The door of the room opened and Lisa and Minho came walking in.
I turned to them and a slight frown appeared on my face, something was different about the two of them. It almost felt like there was some sort of glow around them, radiating warmth and lighting up every corner of the room. I raised my eyebrows at the pair but it almost seemed like they were avoiding my gaze on purpose.

'Are you gonna be okay?' Lisa asked instead, looking at both Thomas and me.

'We'll be fine, nothing we haven't done before,' I teased, hoping to get some sort of reaction out of her.

Lisa scoffed at me before pulling me in a tight hug. Minho and Thomas shared a few words but I was too busy not to sufficate in Lisa's embrace to hear them.
Finally she let me go. 'Show these slintheads what you're made of,' she whispered.

I gave her a smile and then leaned a bit closer, making my voice so soft the two boys wouldn't be able to hear me. 'Why are you glowing?'

My sister her eyes widened as a startled expression appeared on her features. 'Is-is it that obvious?' She mumbled, more to herself than me.

'What happened?' I whispered, feeling curiousity bursting like a bubble inside of me.

Lisa only had to throw one look at Minho for me to know the rest. When she looked back at me her cheeks were red and I couldn't stop the smirk from appearing on my lips.

'You did not!' I yelped.

'Sshh,' she said angrily but her eyes were sparkles of pure joy and then she gave a curt nod.

I hit her shoulder in an attempt to be enthousiastic and quiet at the same time. 'About shucking time,' I mumbled, making Lisa frown angry at me.

She never got the chance to respond however, because Minho walked up to me, placing his hand on my shoulder. 'Don't die, chick.'

I smirked at him. 'Well, you know me, I don't die easily.'

He seemed satisfied with that answer and was about to walk away when I stood on my toes and whispered in his ear. 'Good job.'

Then I turned and followed Thomas and Charlotte out of the room. Throwing one last glare over my shoulder I saw a very red Minho and a very angry Lisa. I simply smiled at the two of them before they disappeared out of sight.

When we walked around the corner, Vince stood there waiting for us, a frown on his face. 'Now are you too sure about this?' He asked.

Thomas and I shared a glare before nodding. 'Just hurry after we've planted the device. Janson told us he needs our brains to complete the cure,' I muttered.

Vince his eyes slightly widened but he didn't respond.

'Make sure you get there before we're dead,' Thomas added, smiling a little, 'we'd appreciate it.'

Nodding he leader of the Right Arm took a step aside, gesturing for us to walk passed him. Taking a deep breath I did so, the nerves flying through my body.

They took us to a new van. A guy named Lawrence was driving and a female pilot sat in the seat next to him, both of them didn't seem to be very pleased with the situation and I couldn't really blame them.
I wasn't exactly in a hurry to get back out there as well, but we had to defeat Wicked and if this was the way to do it, then so be it.

The sun had risen, making everything seem a bit brighter and a bit less scary.
Thomas and I sat in the back off the van, facing each other.
The Right Arm had given us a few guns in case it went wrong. I wasn't used to having a gun and I didn't like the feeling of it at all. The weight of it in my hand felt wrong.

Thomas must have noticed me playing with it because he put his hand on top of mine and gave me a small smile. 'We'll be fine,' he whispered.

'Let's hope so,' I replied softly.

'Okay, remember the plan,' Lawrence suddenly spoke from his position behind the wheel.

'And what was the plan?' Thomas asked.

'Make it to the hanger without dying,' was the short answer.

I looked at Thomas. 'Easy right?' I mumbled and he could only nod.

We didn't speak much and drove down the road in silence. I leaned my head back against the cold metal of the van, staring out of the window at the broken world around me. We passed a few lonely people but no far gone Cranks.

The sun reflected its light on the high skyscrapers, forcing me to squint my eyes. The city I remembered living in had been a lot like this one, just less filled with Cranks. As a kid I wasn't afraid of them, I played outside without any fear of the world.
I wish I could still be like that but I wasn't. I was scared, so much that I could feel it eating me alive. A pit in my stomach that always seemed there to haunt me. My hands always sweaty, my night always haunted by nightmares.

'This'll take us all the way,' Lawrence suddenly spoke, taking me out of my thoughts. 'The hanger is probably our most protected facility, so all we have to do is make it there. An hour from now we'll be up in the air, happy and safe.'

'Good that,' Thomas responded.

Suddenly Lawrence started to slow the vehicle. 'What in the world?' He murmered.

I frowned and looked at the road ahead of us to see what caught his attention. There were several cars up ahead, driving in circles.

'I guess I'll just try and get passed them,' Lawrence muttered.

I felt myself starting to tremble as the events from last night came rushing back. I took a deep breath, trying to steady myself, I wouldn't be able to help anyone if I would start to panic.

Lawrence picked his speed up again.

I leaned forward, squinting to see what was going on. A crowd of maybe twenty people seemed to be fighting over something, though I couldn't make out what.

'What're you planning?' Thomas asked.
'You need to stop!' The pilot yelled.
'No, I'm going through!' Lawrence replied.
'You'll get us killed!'
'We'll be fine. Just shut up!'

I bit my lip as we approached the scene, my body still trembling.

We reached the group of people. I leaned towards the window and saw them fighting over what seemed to fighting over something on a huge pile of trash. They were pulling all kinds of stuff out, wood, clothes, trashcans. They were ripping it out of each others hands and didn't doubt to punch someone if they came too close.

Suddenly the wheels of the van screeched and my attention was taken to the road before me. The cars that had been driving in circles had now stopped. Three cars were lined up, facing our van.

Almost like an instinct I tightened my grip around the gun in my hand.

Lawrence still didn't stop, instead he turned and headed for the larger gap between two cars. Suddenly one of the cars went forwards, turning sharply to try and hit the van. 'Hold on!' Lawrence yelled.

I grabbed the seat I was in as we shot forwards. The two cars forming the cap didn't move but the third headed straight towards us. I was about to scream but no sound came out of my throat as suddenly the car hit us from the left.

The sudden impact threw me forwards against the front seats, my shoulder hitting it with a terrible blow. A scream escaped my lips. Glass flew in all directions and the sound of screeching tires was hurting my ears. I reached out and tried to grap something to hold on to but couldn't get a grasp on anything, and was thrown into Thomas instead.

Suddenly we stopped as the van hit a wall. I fell on my knees, coughing as I grasped my painfully throbbing shoulder. Tears appeared in my eyes but blinked them away. Then turned to look at Thomas, who was lying on the floor, coughing. 'Are you okay?' I asked, pulling myself up.

'Yeah, I think so,' he replied.

I offered him my hand, which he took and pulled him up. Then I turned forward, Lawrence and the pilot both seemed to be fine. I caught sight of the three cars driving away, fading out of sight as they disappeared down the road, a slight frown appeared on my face, not able to grasp in the slightest what their plan had been.

Then, my eyes fell on something else. A small gasp left my lips as my eyes stared at the only person who could make my heart race like that.

Newt.

Newt stood there on the road and he looked absolutely horrible. His eyes were red. Black veins drawn all over his face, like the lines of a long forgotten map. Scars and bruises covered his cheeks. His shirt was ripped and his pants were filthy with what seemed to be blood.

I didn't know what it was about him but something made my blood boil. It made me angry to see him like this. But since there was no one to blame, the anger just burned like fire inside of me.

His eyes burned right in my very soul and I knew he recgonised me, just like I recgonised him and always would.

'Thomas,' I whispered, my voice so quiet it surprised me he actually heard it.

But Thomas was already staring at the person we both thought we lost. His eyes wide, mirrors of the pain that was overwhelming him.

Suddenly I was snapped back to reality as Lawrence drove the van away from the wall, the tires screeching.

My body reacted before my brain even knew what it wanted to do. I stood up and threw myself against the doors, throwing them open.

'What're you doing?' Lawrence yelled.

'Stop!' Thomas screamed. 'Stop the car!'

Lawrence hit the bricks and I felt myself almost falling out of the car. Thomas grabbed my shirt and pulled me back inside. We shared a glare, my heart beating in my throat.

'What the hell do you guys think you're doing!' Lawrence yelled.

Thomas pulled his gun out of his pocket and pointed it at Lawrence, who immediately put his hands in the air. 'Woah, kid, calm down. What is wrong with you?'

'I saw my friend out there,' Thomas groaned. 'I want to see if he's okay. If trouble starts I'll run back to the van. Just be ready to get us out of here when I do.'

'You think that thing out there is still your friend?' The pilot asked coldly. 'Those Cranks are way passed the gone, he's an animal. Worse than an animal.'

'Well, then it'll be a short goodbye, won't it,' I snapped at the pilot before turning around and jumping out of the van.

Thomas spoke a few more words with Lawrence before following me. I didn't hear any of it, all I could do was stare at the shadow of Newt who stood there before me.

The worst part about him were his eyes. There was a certain wildness in them, almost like the eyes of an animal, completely taken over by nothing but an instinct to kill and survive. It almost made me turn around and climb back in the van, but then Thomas appeared by my side and I let out a shaky breath. At least I wasn't alone.

'Hey, Newt? It's me Thomas. You still remember me right?' Thomas asked carefully.

And I narrowed at Newt as a sudden clarity shone through his eyes. 'I bloody remember you, Tommy. You just came to see me at the Palace, rubbed it in that you ignored my note. I can't go completely crazy in a few days.'

Confusion waved over me as I turned to Thomas. 'What note?'

The Glader didn't take his gaze of Newt and it almost seemed like he was silently asking permission to him about this very secret note. Newt let out something in between a groan and laugh. 'Go ahead, go ahead and bloody show her. It's not like you listen to anything I say.'

Hurt crossed Thomas his eyes but he reached into his pocket nonethless, taking out a crumbled piece of paper and handing it to me.

My hands were shaking as I took it, even though I desperatly tried to stop them from doing so. With my eyes focused on the white paper, making sure I didn't rip it, I folded it open. Closing my eyes for a second I took a shaky breath, trying to prepare myself for whatever it was the note had to say.

But as I opened my eyes and scanned the words I realised there was nothing in the whole world that could've prepared me for this. It felt like a brick was placed on the spot where my heart used to be and suddenly it was hard to breathe, my entire body shaking as the words drilled their way into my skull.

"Kill me, Tommy, if you've ever been my friend. Kill me."
