| chapter 30: the good and the bad |

DAWN

Thomas was unconscious, going through the Changing. Finally I understood how the others must have felt when Alby and I were going through the Changing. He screamed like every five seconds. I didn't even dare to be around him. Although Lisa had told us what she thought was the reason he did this, I still was angry at him, he could have died and then we would've had much bigger problems.

I sighed and looked out of the window, I'd been sitting on the bed in my little room since the Grievers had left. Lost in my never ending thoughts. I was so scared I might have the wrong choice, by being mad at Newt and by keeping my thoughts a secret from Lisa. I had made many mistakes and still I felt

A sudden knock on the door made me look up. 'Yeah?' I called.

Slowly the door opened and Lisa came limping into the room. 'What are you doing here?' I asked, eyebrows raised.

Lisa closed the door and sat down in the chair before me. 'I'd expected that you would be a bit nicer to me.'

I sighed and leaned against the wall behind my bed. 'You're right, I'm sorry.'

She smiled at me. An honest smile. 'It's alright, actually...' She took a deep breath. 'I just wanted to talk.'

I gave her a small smile.

'You owe me an explanation.' Her voice was stern but her look was amused.

I sat up a bit straighter. 'What is there to tell, you know everything already.'

'Not entirely true. I still don't understand half of what is going on between you and Newt.'

I laughed, looking down at my lap. 'Well, even I don't understand what's going on,' I whispered.

 'Do you like him?'

I looked up at her, seeing the amused smile on her face. I shrugged, making her sigh.

'Don't give me that crap, do you like him yes or no.'

A sigh left my lips at her endless teasing. 'Yes, I think I do.'

She let out a small yelp and a smile appeared on her face. 'Then what's the problem?'

I frowned at her. 'What do you mean "problem"?'

She sighed, looking at me as if I was the most stupid person in the Glade. 'Why aren't you guys together?'

'Oh,' I muttered, taking a deep breath. 'Well, that's probably because he told me he loved me and then I basically said I found it more important to get out of there than to love him back.'

Lisa let out a groan and threw back her head.

'It's not like it isn't true!' I said, a little offended.

She let out a mocking laugh. 'Keep telling that yourself, that's a great excuse.'

I frowned at her. 'Excuse?'

Putting her hair behind her ear she gave me a serieus glare. 'It's obvious you like him, so you maybe you should figure out why you keep trying to push him away.'

A sigh left my mouth. 'You make it sound so easy.'

Lisa shrugged. 'What can I say? I'm a master at giving love advice.'

We stared at each other for a couple of seconds and then bursted out in laughter.

Suddenly there was a knock on the door. We both stopped laughing and I wiped away the tears from my cheeks. 'What?' I yelled.

Newt came in, making my stomach twist and I threw an uncomfortable glare at Lisa, who was trying her best not to break out into laughter again.

'We need help with preparing the Homestead for another night,' Newt said, his expression blank.

I nodded but realised then he wasn't even looking at me. His eyes were only fixed on Lisa. She raised her eyebrows but nodded. 'Yeah, we're coming,' She replied.

'Good that.' And he left.

Once he closed the door she looked back at me. 'He must be really angry at you.'

I sighed and rubbed my temples, it was becoming a weird habit. 'You think?'

Lisa sighed and shook her head. 'Please just figure out what's holding you back before this kills you both.'

A groan left my lips. 'Yes, mom.'

She rolled her eyes and then tried to stand up. 'Come on, let's help your man.'

I glared at her. 'You can barely walk! Stay here, I'll help.'

'I hate doing nothing,' she whined.

I gave her a stern glare. 'You, stay, and take some rest.' Then I left the room.

The rest of the day I helped with cleaning the building, making food and repairing the foretress.
With everything I had to do the day passed real quick. I just wished there was something I could do to skip the night.

After we ate a quick dinner I decided to check up on Thomas before the night would start. I found him in the healing room, Lisa and Jeff were taking care of him. His skin was really pale and his veins were drawn all over it. He wasn't screaming but groaning and mumbling in his "sleep".

Lisa looked at me when I entered. 'Maybe we should put him in the Slammer tonight. If the Grievers break in this room, we can't protect him.'

'And if the Grievers take him there?' Jeff replied.

'I don't think that will happen. It also didn't happen with Teresa,' Lisa said, shrugging.

'I'll go tell Newt,' Jeff said and he left.

'I should go, before mister-I-am-not-looking-at-you shows up here,' I said.

Lisa flashed me an understanding smile and I made my way outside.

I'd found a spot in a room on the first floor to spend the night. Lisa was somewhere down stairs because she couldn't come up with her leg. I was lying in the corner under a few blankets. My bow was in my hand but it was also under the blanket, along with a few arrows. My hair covered my face, so nobody could see that I was still awake. I scanned the room and found Newt. He was sitting in the corner opposite of me, staring at me.

A little smile appeared on my lips and I stared back at him.

He had a frown on his face, his brown eyes concentraded on me, while he kept on running his hand through his hair.

I let out a shaky breath before closing my eyes. Lisa was right, I had to figure out why I was pushing him away before I could make it up with him.

Again it took hours for the Grievers to come. I'd almost fallen asleep when the horrible sound of the beasts reached my ears. My hands were getting sweaty and I felt goosebumps tickling my skin. I took a deep breath and sat up, my hand still firmly around my bow. I knew that I couldn't do much, but I wanted to do something. So if the Grievers would come and bring us pain...Then I would make them leave with just as much pain.

Silence spread through the Homestead, as if we were all holding our breath. Then the ticking sound began. Mechanic noises, followed by a hollow echo. Everytime a Griever took a step on the wood I winced.

Suddenly, on this floor but not in our room, there was a huge explosion from wood and glass.

They were inside again. I heard screams and roars. My hand tightned around me bow. I bit my lip and tasted blood. I couldn't sit here and do nothing, not anymore. So I jumped up and threw the quiver over my back, took my bow and ran out of the room.

I heard the boys scream my name, but I didn't listen.

My feet dragged me to the end of the hall and then I slowed down and peeked around the corner. A Griever, big and terrifying stood by the stairs. His tail with sting towards me. Quietly I took an arrow from my quiver and put it on my bow.

Then I jumped from behind the wall and shoot the arrow into what should be the Grievers ass. It roared and turned around. And when it did so, its tail broke the windows and the doors.

'Come on,' I whispered, taking another arrow.

The beast roared at me and I swallowed, took a deep breath and shot the arrow in its mouth.
Spit came out of his mouth and it made a horrible choking sound. Again it roared and then it swung its tail at me.

Quickly I let myself fall down on the ground. Wood shattered all around me, making holes in the ground and roof. Then the Griever rolled downstairs, breaking the staircase apart.

Screams came from downstairs. I jumped back to my feet and took my bow. I ran to the stairs, ready to go after the hideous monster when I heard him scream my name, making me freeze in my tracks. I turned around and saw Newt standing there, breathing heavily and staring with wide eyes at me. His eyes...Filled with horror and pain.

I could only stare at him, Lisa's words sounding over and over again in my head. I dropped my bow from my hands ran towards him.

He opened his mouth, probably to say something, but I didn't give him a chance. I reached him, took his face in my hands and kissed him.

He froze and I took a step backwards, suddenly scared I made things worse. Newt stared at me, his eyes wide. 'I'm so sorry,' I stammered. 'I don't why-' But I never got the finish that sentence because he pulled me towards him and put his lips back on mine.

I wrapped my arms around his neck. His hands were holding my steady. His lips soft and his hands warm. I felt myself smile against his lips, he pulled me closer, taking my every breath away. Then we slowly broke apart, both of us breathing heavily.

'I love you,' I breathed.

A little smile appeared on his face.

'I bloody love you too.' He said softly.

'What's that with you and bloody?' I muttered.

He grinned. 'That's what you're thinking about right now?'

'Nope,' I answered, putting my lips on his again. I couldn't say there were butterflies in my stomach. It felt more like electric shocks were send through my entire body. I tangled my fingers in his hair and smiled while deepening the kiss.

Suddenly a scream broke through the air. A high-pitched, bone shattering scream. Newt and I broke apart and my eyes widened. 'Lisa,' I whispered.

I took Newt his hand, and my bow in the other hand.

We ran down the pieces that were left of the stairs.

The glowing warmth in my body had turned into ice. I heard the scream over and over, but I couldn't tell if it was real or not. Finally we came downstairs and my breath stopped. Three Grievers had rolled out of the Homestead and I knew who they had taken this time...

I ran out of the Homestead just in time to see them disappearing in the Maze. Suddenly it was hard to breathe, my lungs were begging for air as a sob left my lips My hands were trembling so much that I dropped my bow.

'Dawn?' Newt whispered behind me.

I bit my lip before falling down on my knees, no more strength to keep myself standing.

Lisa, they'd taken Lisa.
