Chapter 3 - Part 2 - Darkness
About two hours later, Rachel drove back to the warehouse area. It was already getting dark.
She parked the car half a kilometer away, took her bag out of the trunk and then walked the rest of the way. When she came near the warehouse she stayed off the road to avoid to be seen, if there really was someone still in front of the building.
The place was in low light and she waited around the corner to make sure that there was nobody inside or waiting somewhere beside the entrance.
When she finally approached the building, her heart was beating fast.
The gate wasn't locked.
For a second, Rachel was shivering but she dared to open the gate just enough to slip inside and closed it behind her again.
The large warehouse was completely silent, just her steps echoed from the walls. Slowly and carefully Rachel moved in the dark, waiting for something to happen. But nothing, no sound and even no light in this abandoned place.
She switched on the light of her mobile phone and the bright cold light illuminated at least a bit of the large room, making it not really more comfortable though.
The dirty plastic curtains in the corner were like Rachel had seen them for the first time, covering the plants again. She didn't pull them away but headed the opposite way, towards the stairs which led to the basement.
There had to be a clue which she hadn't seen, something she wasn't aware of yet. Walking slowly through the quiet warehouse, just with the light of her phone, gave her a shiver all over her back.
She tried to focuson her goal, tried to stay calm, but she more and more got the feeling that someone was watching her from a dark corner behind her.
Almost freaking out she turned around, highlighting the first few meters in front of her with her phone. Nothing.
Breathing heavily, Rachel moved the light around, trying to highlight the dark corners in the back, but the light wasn't powerful enough to remove the shadows completely.
The plastic curtain was still in place, but it felt very uncomfortable looking at it and imagining all those strange plants behind it.
Forcing herself to move on, Rachel turned around again and slowly took a few more steps towards the stairs.
Suddenly there was a noise behind her!
Painfully her heart pulled itself together and Rachel flashed back the light. Nothing.
Just the curtains on the opposite side of the warehouse hanging motionless in the twilight.
"Oh, come on..."
Rachel bit her tongue. Waiting for a few minutes she stood there in the dark, just pointing the light on the plastic curtains, almost hoping that something would happen to release the immense tension. Nothing, not at all.
It almost seemed like an eternity when she finally turned towards the stairs again, now walking quickly and almost in panic.
"Oh, come on, just get this shit done."
Talking to herself didn't help at all to be less scared but she tried anyway.
When she had almost reached the bottom of the stairs she could already see the meat tree in the large room behind the small corridor. It looked so awful frightening in the cold light, which made the shadows even darker and scarier.
Rachel took a careful step towards the tree, then another one. She was expecting something to happen, but nothing did. Just the meat tree across the corridor, now almost seeming to be purple in the light of her phone.
Another careful step and another one.
Her heartwas beating so strong that Rachel got problems to breathe. Or was it the disgusting stench of this gross tree?
She had almost made it through the corridor, when --
