Second Chances
Second chances with childhood sweethearts are only something that happens in cheesy melodramas with heroines flaunting perfect skin and legs for days. Believe me, I have watched more Netflix than I care to admit. Second chances in general are difficult to come by in life, that much I have learned. And sometimes, it's the last thing you need.
I had a friend once sophomore year at my old school in Montpelier who had a second chance. She dated two guys who were friends. Not just a couple dates or a make out session at a party, I mean really dated each of them. One right after the other. Met the parents, Sunday night dinner at grandma's, family vacations, the works.
When she broke up with the second guy, she actually got back together with the first. I'm not kidding. Talk about complicated. As you probably already guessed, it didn't end well for any party involved.
Then there's the case with my parents, my father's relationship with our entire family really. I think about how little he deserves a second chance. And how unwilling I am to allow him one. My mother's choices are another story, but that's neither here nor there.
No. Second chances are unrealistic. If it got messed up in the past, then it didn't work out for a reason. Besides, I guess I'm a lot like my dad in that sense.
I have never deserved a second chance with Gilbert Levy after how I treated him.
