We're Brothers!

"Light em up!"

At Alby's command, numbers of boys threw torches of fire into a huge piles of logs. It lit up. Boys began clapping and dancing and even playing music by banging pans and pots together.

Chuck enjoyed himself by showing Greenie 2 around. He creased his eyebrows when he noticed that Greenie 2 was looking down at his stomach. "You must be hungry"

"I surely am Chuckie," Greenie 2 agreed. "I can't even remember the last time I ate,"

"Then let's fill your belly up," Chuck took his hand and led him over to a large stool. "This is Frypan," he pointed to the hefty cook with black shaven hair.

"Can I interest you in some bacon?" the chief offered a small plate of bacon to Greenie 2. He took it.

"Thank you," he tried a bit. "Mmm. It's good. Where'd you learn how to cook?"

"Top secret," Frypan answered back smugly before turning to the next customer.

Greenie 2 devoured more of his bacon as Chuck kept showing him around. He was incredibly amazed at some of the boy's cool tricks like swinging sticks around with angelic flexible arms or doing acrobatics.

"That is pretty cool," Greenie 2 said admirably. "You know for a huge society of boys who are stuck here...you guys surely know how to party," he smiled.

"I said the same thing myself when I came up into the maze," Chuck stated. He stopped walking when he noticed Greenie 2 was glaring darkly at Gally in a wrestling ring. "You don't like him do you?"

"Is he always like this? Pummeling newbies down? Did he ever do that to you?"

"No," Chuck answered numbly. "At first I was a little scared. But that's just how he is. He's not that bad. He did save you and Greenie 1's life today,"

"By shovelling us," Greenie 2 noticed a pair of heads sitting in front of a log not too far from the ground. "Still quite curious about that maze he is,"

"So are you," Chuck said. "You really wanna know what's out there?"

Greenie 1 nodded.

"Mihno will tell you everything,"

                                                          ................................................

Greenie 1 sat with Newt in front of a log looking out at the dark gates that remained closed.

"Quite a first day Greenie," Newt said to the silent boy.

"Yep,"

"Here..." Newt offered a piece of meat on a stick. "Have something. You must be hungry,"

"I'm not hungry," Greenie 1 gently shook his head. "But thanks,"

"Come on. Who knows the last time you ate?"

Greenie 1 accepted the chicken. He took a bit. "Mmm. It's good. Thanks,"

"And here. Put some hair off your chest," Newt offered the newbie a jar of strange amber drink.

Greenie 1 took a sip. Immediately he spat it out. "Oh my god. What is that?"

Newt laughed a bit, taking the jar back. "I don't even know. It's Gally's recipe,"

Greenie 1 looked back at Gally who was enjoying a round of wrestling.

"He's still an asshole," Greenie 1 said.

"He saved you and Greenie 2,"

"Well he really acts like a bully,"

"He's always like that. But trust me. The maze is a dangerous place," Newt said, taking a sip.

They both stared hardly at the doors to the maze.

"We're trapped here aren't we?" Greenie 1 wondered.

"For the moment. But you see those guys..." he gestured behind him to a group of boys including the Asian chap who was sitting down. He was talking to Greenie 2 and Chuck.

                                                                ................................................

"We run the maze everyday," Mihno explained to Greenie 2. "We map it. We memorise it. We try to find a way out!"

"How long have you guys been looking?" the curious shorter Greenie asked.

Mihno held a vacant expression. "Three years,"

                                                               ................................................

"Seriously?!" Greenie 1 was shocked. "And they haven't found anything?"

"It's a lot easier said than done," Newt answered. "Now listen very carefully," he gestured to the taller Greenie to listen carefully. They heard clanking, banging, cranking.

"What's that noise?" Greenie 1 asked.

"That's the Maze, changing. It changes every night," Newt said.

"How is that even possible?"
                                                    ................................................

Just like Greenie 1, Greenie 2 was still filled wit the same level of curiosity. The Maze was becoming more and more of a mystery every second.
"The truth is, we're s are the only ones that really know what's out there. We're the strongest and the fastest of us all, and it's a good thing, too, because if we don't make it back before those doors close, then we're stuck out there for the night," Mihno answered grimly. "And no one's ever survived a night in the Maze.
"What happens to them?" Greenie 2 felt a little scared.
"We call them Grievers,"
"Has anyone ever seen one?"
"Nope," Mihno said with a straight face. "Once you're stuck in the maze, you don't last until morning,"
Greenie 2 gulped.
"But there's nothing to fear," Chuck consoled. "We're perfectly safe in here,"
His words made the newbie feel relaxed. He still felt a little terrified though.
"Looks like Newt's given the other newbie a talk about the Maze," Mihno pointed to the blonde and brunette haired boys in front of the log.
                                                     ................................................

"We all have to keeping hoping Greenie," Newt said. "It's the only motivation we have if we want to find a way out,"
"Does no one have any idea why we were put here?"
"Not a clue. If any of us could remember anything other than our names, we'd probably know,"
"You don't think it's a prison do you?"
All Newt could answer with was a diminished answer. "I doubt it. If this was a prison, then those gates wouldn't be opening every morning for us to try to find a way out. The only answers we have lie outside the Maze,"
Greenie 1 remained silent, lost in confusion.
"Ahh. There you guys are," Chuck said, alerting them of their presence. "Seem to be busy missing out all the fun Greenie 1.

Greenie 2 sat next to Greenie 1 and Chuck sat next to him.

"Mihno just told me what he and those Runners do. Sounds like a very tiring job. I'm quite surprised you guys haven't given up any hope so far," Greenie 2 said.

"Well...we've all got to keep trying," Newt responded. "We can't stay trapped here forever,"

Greenie 2  saw the jar of strange drink. "Could I have some of that please? I'm really parched,"

"Sure," Newt handed Greenie 1 the jar to give to Greenie 2.
"You'll love it," Greenie 1 encouraged.
Greenie 2 couldn't help but notice a goofy grin. But he was too parched to think straight. The moment he took a sip, he spat it out across the grass.
Greenie 1 burst out laughing that he had to hold his stomach.

"That tastes horrible!" Greenie 2 shouted shouted. "What the hell is this?! How can you even drink it?!" he tossed the jar across the grass. He became infuriated when he saw Greenie 1 laughing hysterically, Newt and Chuck joining in too.

Greenie 2 frowned and realised he was tricked. He punched Greenie 1's shoulder. "You'll pay for that Mister," he warned.

Greenie 1 didn't feel the slightest threatened by Greenie 2's warning.

"Well...that's enough questions for tonight," Newt broke the tension. "Come on. You guys are supposed to be the guest of honours,"

"Chuck's already introduced me to everyone," Greenie 2 said.

"Still gotta give the taller Greenie 1 an introduction," Newt said. "And you guys have gotta join in the fun. Come on!"

He pulled the reluctant Greenie 1 up.

"I'm not..."

"Come on," Chuck pulled his hand. "You're not goanna miss out all the fun,"

The two boys pulled the newbies into the party atmosphere. Newt pointed to the different groups of people. "Over there, we got the Builders. They're very good with their hands, but they're not a lot going on upstairs,"

Greenie 2 saw Gally amongst them. "Is that guy a builder?"

"Yep. You're goanna have to get used to him," Chuck clarified.

"And there's Winston," Newt pointed to a dark haired boy wearing an orange shirt. "He's the Keeper of the Slicers. "And we got two Med-jacks, Clint and Jeff. You've met them already Greenie 1,"

Greenie 1 recognised Jeff and Clint from the hospital hut. When they passed by, they recognised him and asked him how he was doing. "I'm doing good thanks," he said.

"They spend most of their time bandaging up the Slicers," Newt said.

"What if I wanna be a Runner?" Greenie 1 suddenly asked.
"Have you listened to a word I've just said? No one wants to be a Runner. And besides, you gotta get chosen," Newt stated.

"Get chosen by who?" Greenie 2 asked.
Just then a boy was thrown at Greenie 2's back, almost knocking him over.
Greenie 1 managed to steady them both. "Hey!" he snapped over to Gally. "Watching where you're throwing someone before you knock some else over,"
Greenie 2 glanced thoughtless at Greenie 1. He was acting very protective for a reason.
"What do you say, Greenie 1 and Greenie 2? Wanna see show us what you two are made of?" Gally goaded competitively.

The boys watched the scene nodding their heads in agreement. They were desperate to see with the newbies were capable off.
Greenie 2 casted a casual glance at Greenie 1. "You're going first,"
"Wait? What?" Greenie 1 was flabbergasted. He felt quite offended.
"You're the taller one," the shorter one crossed his arms. "You're going first,"
"No! I'm not! You go first!"
"Hey! I've got a better idea!" Gally spoke up again. "Let's have them fight each other!"
Everyone roared in agreement.
The two greenies immediately protested.
"No way!" 1 refused, fearing that 2 would want to get his revenge.
"No! No! No!" Greenie 2 shouted. "I am not fighting anybody!"
"Why?" Gally broke the cheering. "Are you scared?" he goaded.
The boys laughed. Greenie 2 frowned. "I am not!"
"Then fight! That includes you two Greenie 1!" Gally started clapping and chanting the word: "Fight!" very loudly. Everyone started joining in, clapping their hands. The two Greenies cast unhappy glances at each other They were not backing out of this any time soon.
Greenie 1 and 2 circled each other in the circle of sand, holding onto one another with their matching dark eyes.
"Don't think that because you're a bit shorter I'm goanna take it easy on you," Greenie 1 warned 2.
"Well...don't expect me to say I didn't warn you that you were goanna pay for that," 2 warned back. They took their stand.
"Okay. Alright. The rules are simple, Greenie 1 and Greenie 2," Gally spoke up. "The first one to push the other out of the circle wins. Each of you try and last more than five seconds,"
"No. I think we'll make this a bit exciting," Greenie 2 said. "Let's see who gets beaten first,"
Gally clapped his hands. "Now that's a game,"
"Wait. Wait. Wait. No. No. No," Greenie 1 shook his head. "I don't wanna do that,"
"What are you? Scared?" Greenie 2 mocked.
Everyone laughed. Greenie 1 frowned. In the blink of an eye, he ram moved aside and Greenie 1 nearly rammed out of the circle. A boy named Zart and three boys caught him and pushed him back.
Greenie 1 glared back at 2 who smirked. "We're not done yet,"
This time 2 charged at him and he shoved him in the stomach, pushing him back. But 1 stood his ground and managed to throw him to the ground. They began to wrestle on the ground.
"I love this game!" Gally cheered along with the other builders.
Chuck and Newt shared glances. They didn't like this game at all.
Greenies 1 and 2 stood up and started wrestling each other again. 2 pushed too hard that 1 slipped out of his grasp and he pummelled to the floor.
Everyone went "Woah,"
Number 1 stood up. "Looks like I win,"
But 2 quickly reacted by swiping his leg and knocking 1 down. He landed with a thump on the side of his head.
2 stood up, smirking. "Looks I'm the winner this time,"
Everyone clapped and cheered but Greenie 2's moment of victory was smashed when Gally suddenly shoved him in the side kicking him down. He landed on his head with a thud next to Greenie 1.
"Oops," he goaded. "Looks like you've gotta another fight to win. You'll have against me if you want to be the winner," Gally goaded.
Greenie 2 growled in anger, tired of being pushed down by the Builder all the time.
Greenie 1 was lifting his head when he suddenly remembered something. He felt his head exploding. "Thomas," he murmured.
Greenie 2 was lifting up his head, rubbing it. For a moment he closed his eyes, but as he did, he suddenly remembered something too. A word. A name. And something else.
"Thomas!" Thomas cried out earning everyone's attention. He jumped back up to his feet. "Hey! I remember my name! I'm Thomas!"
"My name! I remember my name too!" Edward jolted up. "I'm Edward!"
The Gladers shared glances and smiles for the two Greenies.
Thomas and Edward uncannily shared glances at other. They stepped a bit closer, as if they could actually recognise each other. Everyone watched intently.
"I remember something else," Edward said.
"Me too," Thomas tilted his head.
"We're..." Edward paused. "We're brothers,"

A chorus of gasps rung the quiet air. Thomas stared at Edward with utter shock. So did everyone else. They had never ever seen anyone with a brother before.

Thomas took another glance at his younger brother. "You're right," another memory was now fuming in his mind. "You're right!" he clasped his younger brother's shoulders. "We're brothers!"

Edward clasped his shoulders back and they burst out cheering, almost wanting to jump around for joy.

The Gladers cheered and clapped and gathered around them. The brothers were given drinks by Frypan. "Welcome home, Thomas and Edward!" he cheered.

Quite parched, the brothers thanked them, sharing a toast with each other and fling each other's arms around their shoulders. Gally approached them. "Good job Thomas. And you..." he looked at Edward. "That was some quite fight you put up there,"

"Just don't touch me again," Edward warned, earning a scowl.

The moment of cheering was interrupted by a loud electrical ringing disturbing their festive mood. They looked towards the
"What the hell was that?" Thomas asked.
"That, my friend, was a Griever. Don't worry," Gally assured. "You guys are safe here with us. Nothing gets through those walls,"
He was right. The brothers could tell that the walls were thick and dense, impenetrable.

"Alright, guys," Alby said. "Let's tuck it in for the night. Come on. It was a good night,"

Everyone started to walk over to the Homestead to retire for the night. The brothers shook hands with Frypan, thanking him for the drink. But as the chief walked off, they looked towards the Maze, mesmerised by its mystery.

Edward and Thomas were the last Gladers to head to bed. By the time they had reached the hammocks, everyone had already dozed off. They snored and yawned in their sleep.

"I can't believe I didn't recognise you," Edward said as Thomas held his arm around him, relieved that they were together and he had a brother to love and cherish.

"Well whoever put us here...I'm really glad they allowed us to remember we were brothers. It would have killed me if I didn't remember," Thomas turned to him. "What's important is we're together," he patted his shoulder. "Now...off to bed little brother," he ruffled his head.

Edward frowned. "Hey. I'm only younger than you. Not little," it was another fact that he wished the Creators hadn't kept in his head aside from Thomas's.

"Well.." Thomas smirked. "You are a bit shorter," he shrugged his shoulders.

Edward rolled his eyes. "Well...taller brother," he bobbed his head up and down at him. "We have  got a big day tomorrow. So let's get some sleep," he pulled off his boots and swung his legs into the hammock.

He was about to get some shut eye when he noticed Thomas staring out the closed gates. He was quite curious.

"You want to be a runner don't you," the younger brother assumed correctly.

"Yep," Thomas flicked his head to him. "I don't know why," he laid his head down and crossed his fingers together. "I just..." he twiddled his middle and fourth fingers. "...feel like it's my calling,"

"Never thought I'd say this..." Edward began copying his actions. "but...I do too,"

Thomas gave him a weird glance. "You think we might have a lot of other things in common?" he asked.

Edward shrugged. "I don't know. We'll just have to wait and find out what the day brings. Dunno how long we're goanna be stuck here. Goodnight Thomas," he tucked into his hammock.

"Goodnight Edward," Thomas said. "Hey...I promise I won't let anything happen to you,"

Edward felt touched. He saw the love in his brother's eyes. He couldn't remember how close they were before all this happened...but whatever it was...it was still there.

The brothers drifted off to sleep wondering about what the next day would bring.
