The Father's Box
At the Right Arm headquarters, the travellers sipped on water and dressed in some new clothes. They sat around a table with food, questions were aimed at Amelia.
"Why didn't you tell us Vince was your father?" Harriet asked curiously.
"I felt a little embarrassed. And I thought it would be best to say it in person once we reunited with him. After Thomas and Edward revealed everything to me when they rescued me, I still felt unready to truly believe it. But now I have," Amelia said as she sat next to her father who smiled at her lovingly.
"How did you come to be the leader of the Right Arm?" Aris asked the man.
"It all began when my wife Ava took over WICKED. From what Thomas and Edward had reported to me with what they supplied to Mary, it seemed she had overthrown its founders and had begun illegal experimentations on children. She took Amelia away from me and I never saw her again. I had worried for years but then Mary came to me and told me she was alive. With the information the brothers had provided her, I formed this Right Arm from survivors desperate to put an end to WICKED's tyrannical ways,"
"How can you be certain your men will find Edward in this city?" Brenda asked, worried, scared for him. And her surrogate father too. She was petrified at the thought of what WICKED would do to him. Would they kill him? Torture him for information on their whereabouts?
"Don't worry Brenda. They'll find him," Sonya said positively. "And we'll rescue Jorge too,"
Amelia rubbed Brenda's back in comfort. "I'm so sorry Brenda," she felt so guilty that she hadn't managed to get everyone here safely.
"Is Thomas okay?" Chuck asked Minho worriedly.
Minho didn't answer for a long while. By the looks of his shrivelled face, he looked rather nervous. "I can't say for sure Chuck. In our cells, we could hear his screams all over the compound. They've caused him so much pain trying to get that information,"
Aris asked the next question. "Did he give in?"
"He did. The guards said that he was doing it so they would give the serum they were harvesting to Newt,"
Pale colours painted Amelia and Chuck's faces.
"You mean Newt's..." Chuck drifted off.
"He's not immune like us," Minho answered gravely. "Some of us were placed inside the trials to be control subjects. Thomas said he'd give them the information if they agreed to give Newt and everyone else the serum to help them hold out against the Flare if they caught it,"
"Were they on the same train as you guys?" Amelia asked.
"They were. But in a different compartment. Gally and the others couldn't find them before WICKED's reinforcements arrived. They'll be locked up inside the city now along with the other Immunes they couldn't rescue in time,"
"We're going to break the non-Immunes out too," Amelia said determinedly.
"Think first," her father said.
"Dad, we can't abandon Newt and the others. They're our friends!"
"I'm sorry Amelia, but if we let Cranks into the Safe Haven, it won't last a week,"
"Then we'll get every vial of serum that WICKED has in their storages,"
"And when we run out?" Vince hated, upsetting his daughter like this. "I truly am sorry guys. But we cannot allow the infected to live in the Safe Haven. Even if we were able to gain large supplies of that serum,"
The teens were breathless. They wanted to argue but his reasons were precise. Sonya began to cry so Aris gave her a side-hug of comfort. Chuck disheartened was and comforted by Amelia. With Edward absent, her loving arms were his only source of surrogate comfort.
"What if what Thomas discovered was a solution to a cure?" Harriet spoke up. "What if his father did invent a way for the Flare to be cured but WICKED didn't know about it?"
"We cannot say for certain Harriet," Vince said. "But we must gain what Stephen hid before WICKED does. Before Mary died, she told me that Stephen was an intelligent man. Even if he was blackmailed by WICKED, he would have hidden secrets from them that only he wanted his sons to find. Once we find Edward, we will rescue Thomas and find out what it is,"
At the mention of Edward, Brenda stared out into the open air out a glassless window, praying that Edward was safe.

Still sitting on the seat where he was, Edward stared blankly at Han sitting across the room from him. The more he looked at his saviour, the more he became familiar as memories came bouncing back into his head. "You're a scientist from WICKED aren't you,"
"I was. I first met you when you were very small and your original name was Daniel. I was in charge of taking care of you and Thomas in Ava's absence,"
"Did you know she blackmailed my father by threatening me and my brother?"
"No. Not until after Mary told me. When you guys began to betray WICKED and aid the Right Arm, she revealed everything to me. We chose not to tell you guys at the time because we knew how guilty you would feel. Before you guys set out to rescue Amelia, your brother discovered something,"
"Which he kept from me to protect me," Edward finished. Though touched remembering Janson saying how committed Thomas would go to great lengths to protect him, he despised secrets being kept from his loved ones.
"Your brother acted out of your best interests to keep you safe,"
"What did he discover which our father hid?"
Han reached under an old table and he placed down a large box of metal with circles on each side. "Your brother discovered this in your father's locked office in WICKED's compound. He believes it contains a message which your father meant for you two. He ensured it could only be opened by your thumbprints," his gaze fell to two thumb scanners on the top of the box. "He knew that Ava shouldn't get her hands on it so he secretly gave it to me and told me to leave as soon as possible. On his suggestion, I came here to Denvers to hide out. I've been waiting here for the Right Arm to arrive hoping you guys had joined it and we could unlock what your father hid,"
"WICKED has Thomas," said Edward gravely. "They're torturing him for that information. But the Right Arm is here too. Ava's daughter Amelia was leading us to their leader Vince,"
"Then we must join them too," Han said. "Do you know where they are?"
"That big building in front of the street where I was knocked out,"
"It will be too dangerous to go there. There will be soldiers flooding that area. We need to wait until nightfall to make it over,"
As he spoke, Edward felt jabs of stinging from his neck wound. He scrunched his eyes and he pressed his fingers against the nape of his neck. But as he did, he felt suddenly flashes of images gushing into his mind. He and Thomas when they were boys and played together. Their parents hugged them, telling them there was nothing more important to them than their little men. He and Chuck meet for the first time and become close friends. Defending Aris from Jerry when he was tormenting him. He and Teresa working together. Gasping in shock when he discovered his Grievers had stung George causing him to turn savage.
Edward gasped and he nearly fell off his bed.
"Take it easy," Han said, coming over to steady him.
Edward struggled to breathe. "My...my memories,"
"I returned your memories to you as I removed the chip. Thought you'd want to remember your real name and your family,"
"I know my real name. Daniel,"
"Like your mother Danielle," Han said. Edward glanced at him nervously. "Thomas gave this to me to keep safe too. Until you two would find me," the man pulled out a photo from his pocket. Edward took it and he saw himself and Thomas as kids with their parents. They looked so happy together. The memory from long ago made a tear fall onto his father's face. Then his mother's face. He wiped away the tear on his mother's face but not his father's.
Han knew what that meant. "I know you deem your father a monster for creating the Flare. But he loved you and your brother. So much that he would do anything to keep you both safe. No neglect that. No, restrain his memory. Remember him as the father who loved his sons,"
Edward didn't look at him as he spoke but his words motivated more tears to fall off his face. He missed his parents. He missed his brother. He missed his golden childhood which WICKED, Ava Paige had taken from him. His determination to save his brother grew stronger.
"Wait here," Han said. "Don't leave this room whatever you do," he warned. He left the room quietly.

Jorge was hauled through the shiny corridors of the WICKED compound by some soldiers. He was bruised. His eyes were black and his lower lip was split.
............................................................................................................................
Regarding Teresa's sudden shock of pain, Ava delayed the meeting a few hours so she could recover. She needed her. She knelt before her. "Feeling better?"
Teresa nodded. "I'm ready,"
They heard the opening of doors and they saw a smug Jerry entering the room with the soldiers and Jorge. The soldiers threw him to the ground. Ava and Teresa approached him carefully.
"He's the man who attacked us at the Right Arm Camp," Jerry said. "Found him in the streets,"
Jorge raised his head, glaring up at Ava.
"Where is Edward?" she demanded.
"I came here alone,"
Ava wasn't fooled. "No, you didn't,"
"You think I'd bring innocent children you want to torture to this place?"
Ava remained unfoiled. She repeated the question once again.
Thought displeased with his attempts of deception, Jorge wouldn't give in. He would be tortured to death before h
"I'm never gonna tell you where that boy is,"
"We will," Jerry arrogantly answered back. He held up the tablet with the blinking red circle.
Jorge's lips parted in shock. He felt his sacrifice to save him and everyone had been in vain. "You may be able to track him...but that will never stop him,"
"You're right. It won't," Jerry agreed, shaping a bigger more arrogant smug with his puffy cheeks. "It won't stop from coming to us,"
"Jerry, I want Edward apprehended as soon as possible," Ava ordered.
"As you wish Chancellor," Jerry turned his back. As he walked out of the office, he twisted his head back to Teresa and gave her a wink. She felt her stomach churn. His flirty nature made her queasy.
"Take him to the cells," Ava ordered.
Jorge was hauled up. "You won't win Ava," he said simply with hope. He was shoved out of the office. Ava watched him disappear around the corner. "Ready?"
Teresa nodded.
The two women left the office and paced silently through the corridors. Ava felt her phone in her pocket buzz. She fished it out and stared blankly at the screen. "Oh god,"
Teresa flicked her head. "What is it?" Ava showed her the screen. She pressed her mouth over her lips. They exchanged pitiful glances.

Jerry stood in a corridor, gazing constantly at his tablet with the peeping red dot which was Edward's tracker. "Jerry, do you copy?" his walkie-talker hissed.
"Go ahead," Jerry called.
"We're heading to the outskirts of the city,"
"Find him," he shut off.
"You love her don't you?" the sudden appearance of his father made him jerk his head to address him.
"I don't know what you're talking about," he turned his attention back to the screen.
"Turn your face to me. We're having a conversation,"
"You don't tell me what to do,"
"I'm your dad,"
"Well, you don't act like one," Jerry muttered. "You know I've tried all I can to please you. But you never seem to show pride in anything I do. It's because you're so focused on your past to even care," he looked back at his father, stood straight, and crossed his arms. "Did you love my mother?"
Janson was quite puzzled. "Course I did," he answered straight.
Jerry's glare grew. "I don't believe you. It's always gonna be Danielle who you're so focused on. And not me, your son," Behind his anger was neglect, resentment
Janson grew outraged. "Do you have any idea how it felt..." he marched on him? "...to watch a woman, I loved cast me aside in favour of someone else?" Jerry's expression wouldn't change. "Why am I asking that question? You do. Because you know that you're never going to get Teresa,"
"What difference does it make? Edward will never trust her again. There's no future for them at all. Just as there is no chance of finally earning your respect at all,"
Janson showed no remorse or hint of woe.
"I'm done with you," Jerry turned his back and walked away from his father who although never called out to him, remained glued in his spot, his face frozen. He retired to his office to be alone. He looked at his tablet again, watching the red dot still stuck in its spot. He smirked. "What are you up to Edward? Why are you running?"
His walkie-talkie buzzed again. "Jerry, do you copy?"
"Go. Tell me you have him,"
"We found his tracker. But he's not there,"
"What?!" Jerry grew impatient. "What do you mean he's not there?!'
"It was cut out. If his chip was cut out it means that he's off the grid,"
Jerry shut off and he banged the gadget against his desk and tossed it to the floor in a fit of rage.
............................................................................................................................
Teresa and Ava walked along the shiny corridors of the shiny building to the meeting room.
"Chancellor! Teresa!" Jerry's loud voice made them twist their heads to see him rushing towards them. "We have a problem!"
"Not now Jerry! We already have had enough delays," Ava rejected. She tried to turn with Teresa but Jerry blocked them.
"Edward's chip was inserted out. My soldiers followed the signal and that's all they found. Edward is now invisible to our sensors,"
"What?" breathed Teresa, her voice dropping low. Jerry's tense fist clenched. She still cared for Edward. More than him. He became more jealous every second.
"Well then find another way to track him," Ava ordered, swerving past him much to his irritation. "Come on Teresa,"
Jerry twisted his face back to Teresa, hoping she'd say something nice to him. She opened her mouth but she heard Ava calling for her. She trailed after her leaving Jerry standing there alone, rejected, still staring out at her retreating figure. He fumed silently through his nostrils. He was not going to just find Edward. He was going to kill him. He pulled up his tablet again. And on the screen appeared several mechanical monsters.
............................................................................................................................
Inside his cell, Thomas sat alone, battered, covered with reminders of the brutal trauma that had been torturing him. He held his pendant in his hands, thinking of Newt. He shed a tear. Every minute he spent away from the boy he loved made him worry more and more. He didn't know if Ava Paige was keeping her word or not. He didn't even know if the serum was working on him. He didn't know what to do. Hope was dying away. He felt himself drowning in a hollowness of loneliness.
Not too long ago he had heard many of his friends had been rescued by the Right Arm. Though relieved that they were safe, he felt no hope at all. WICKED still had plenty of immunes to torture. And with all the military support of the city, they could take down anyone who dared to move against them. If the Right Arm were here in the city, WICKED would take them down in a full blow. Loud grunting echoed outside his cell. He turned his head and he saw Jorge through the small window being manhandled. A punch in the face stunned his fighting and he was dragged. With his eyes barely open, his head dangled to the side and he saw Thomas's concerned face.
Thomas watched helplessly as the poor battered man was thrown into a cell. The cell door locked and the soldiers marched away.

So sorry for the wait. I was facing a bit of writer's block in this chapter. See you all, hopefully, sooner in the next chapter.
