Alby Remembers
The brothers were rather awestruck by Teresa's words.
"Why does he want to see just us?" Thomas asked.
"I don't know," the raven-haired girl answered.
Giving each other a glance, the brothers knew exactly what their next step would be. Linking hands, they walked towards the medical hut with the others following behind them. They entered through the hut, finding Alby sitting with his back turned towards them. He had a bandaged chest and he wore no shirt.
Casting a glance back at everyone who remained standing outside, the pair saw motivated expressions. Gally, however, gave the I'm watching you a glare, pointing his fingers from his eyes right towards Edward.
Edward just glared back at him before he allowed his brother to pull him towards Alby.
As they approached the Glade leader, the brothers noticed that there was something different, something strange about Alby. He didn't turn to them so they circled and sat on the bed opposite him.
"Alby...are...you okay?" Edward asked.
Alby looked up at them. He didn't answer. Instead, his cold but slightly tearful stare set tingles running down their spines.
"We think we might have found a way out," Thomas said. "We could be getting out of here,"
"We can't leave," Alby spoke up at once. "They won't let us,"
Thomas and Edward were shocked by his words.
"Who's 'they?" Edward asked. "What are you talking about?"
"They've been doing this to us for years. They were keeping us hidden away. We were their only means of survival. I remember the Flare, everything it did,"
"Alby, you're not making any sense. Why are you saying all this?" Thomas asked. "What's the Flare?"
"I remember things. And I remember you two," Alby's stare became colder.
The brothers were heart-struck.
"You two were always their favourites. They always doted on you. She always favoured you,"
Paralysed as they were by his words, the brothers were so confused by his words. "Who's she?" Edward asked. "Alby...what are you trying to tell us?"
"Why did you two do this to us? Why did you come here?" Alby's questions sounded heartbreaking.
Thomas and Edward wished they could unheard everything he was seeing.
"You did this...to me..." Alby raised a finger and pointed it at Edward. "You made them...and you..." he shifted it to Thomas. "You made this prison...you caused all this!"
Suddenly as if on instinct, he leapt forward and clasped Thomas's neck, roughly pinning him to the bed.
"Thomas!" Edward shouted. He tried to pull Alby off him. "Let go of him! Newt! Teresa! Someone help!"
Abruptly Teresa and Newt came rushing into the room. They saw the commotion.
"Alby!" Newt rushed to help Edward pull Alby off Thomas who was struggling to breathe as the rough's fingers of Alby's strong hands clasped around his breathing tube. "Teresa! Get his legs!"
Teresa grabbed Alby's legs and heaved with all her might.
With a combined effort, Edward and Newt pulled Alby off Thomas. They pushed Alby back onto the bed, just as more boys came barging in to help Newt whilst Edward and Teresa checked on Thomas who's neck was now marked with painful nail marks.
"Just calm down Alby," Newt spoke.
As he spoke those words, Alby's savage state immediately calmed down and he was now pantig, as if he had just woken up from a horrifying nightmare. As he looked up, he saw everyone staring down at him. He looked towards the brothers, specifically a petrified Thomas whom Edward stood in front of protectively.
"What did you just do?!" Newt demanded.
"I'm- I'm sorry," Alby panted out. "That wasn't me,"
"What do you mean it wasn't you?!" Edward shouted. "First you blabber out things that don't make sense! Then all of a sudden you lash out and try to strangle Thomas!"
"It wasn't...it wasn't me," he panted, unable to amuse the frowning boys and girl. "I felt this...this voice inside me...telling me to kill Thomas. But it's stopped now," he coughed.
"Just lie down," Newt said, pushing a blanket over him.
"You still did this..." Alby pointed at Edward. "You still...did this..."
As he spoke those words, Gally sent a sceptical frown in Edward's direction.
Unable to take it anymore, Edward left the hut.
"Ed..." Thomas tried to speak up. "Ed!" he trailed after him but as he tried to get his attention, his younger brother sped off across the Glade. Thomas sighed.
..............................................
Thomas sat on a log, thinking. He saw his brother sitting on the top of the tower, thinking to himself. He hadn't been able to get a single break from hearing Alby's confusing words in his head. And the way he savagely attacked him.
He rubbed his neck, still sore from such savagery performed by that teenager who had gone through the Changing.
He heard footsteps approaching him. He turned to see it was Newt and Teresa.
"You okay?" Newt asked.
Thomas nodded. He eyed Teresa as she looked towards the tower where Edward sat.
"Your brother not coming down?" she asked.
"Doesn't seem like it. I'd go up and talk to him but he looks like he doesn't feel like company. How's Alby?"
"Resting. I've order him to be restrained just in case," Newt's voice was gentle and concerned. "Thank goodness you weren't alone with him,"
"Thank you for helping my brother,"
"It was no problem Tommy," Newt smiled at Thomas then looked up towards Edward. "He seemed so upset when he left. Did Alby say something?"
"It's not my right to tell," Thomas wanted to respect his brother's privacy.
"Why don't I go talk to him?" Teresa offered.
Thomas was hesitant.
"Maybe I could convince Edward to come down," she said as her way of reason.
"Okay," Thomas accepted. "Just...don't..."
"Okay. Eww," Teresa interrupted. "Why would you think I do that?"
Thomas frowned. "Do what?"
Teresa just bent her eyebrows with straight lips at him before walking towards the tower.
...................................................................................
Edward's legs were hanging over the edge. He was staring towards the open maze, thinking about things. He heard the creaking of wood from right near him. He spun around in a flash.
Teresa's head popped up through the floor. "It's just me," she said.
"Oh..." Edward relaxed. "Sorry. I thought you were Gally,"
"You really think that guy would come near you?" Teresa rhetorically asked as she lifted herself up. "Your brother's been watching you this all whole time and if Gally did come near, he wouldn't allow him,"
Edward chuckled a bit.
Teresa sat beside him. "Are you okay?"
Edward just sighed and turned his head forward again. "I can't get Alby's words out of my head,"
"Listen...that was just him acting crazy. He's probably still recovering from the effects of the Changing,"
"But...they sounded so true. He started speaking the same way Ben did...when he attacked me. What if...what if...I did something bad? What if..."
"You can't let what Alby said put you down. You haven't done anything wrong Edward,"
"That's not exactly how I feel," Edward appreciated Teresa's comforting words, though it did little to raise his hopes. "Teresa...there's something I need to tell you,"
"What is it?"
"You're goanna think I'm crazy but...I think we can hear each other's thoughts," Edward couldn't help but turn to meet Teresa's bright blue eyes as he spoke those words.
Teresa frowned. "What?"
"The night...I went into the Maze to save my brother...before that...I think I heard your voice...in my head,"
Teresa frowned in confusion.
"You told me that...my brother was in danger. And you warned me about him being cornered by a Griever,"
Teresa remained unconvinced.
"I'll show you," Edward closed his eyes.
Teresa glanced at him closely. Can you hear me? A voice rung in her head.
Teresa shivered.
Edward opened his eyes. "Did you hear that?"
"Was that you?"
"Yes. I'll do it again," Again Edward closed his eyes and immediately Teresa felt his head vibrating with Edward's voice.
"That's you?"
"Yes. That's exactly what you did to me," Edward explained. "You spoke to me in my head. I think...I think we have some kind of telepathic communication that seems to switch on and off,"
Teresa couldn't deny what he was saying. "You suppose WICKED did that to us?"
"Of course. Who else would have done it?"
"Why?"
Edward didn't have the answers.
Teresa didn't say anything after that.
"Thank you for warning me of my brother being in danger," Edward's heart told him to be grateful to the girl next to him.
"You're...welcome?" Teresa answered awkwardly.
Edward chuckled at her funny voice. The were beginning to enjoy each other's company. He wanted to stay in his happy state but once again his desperate desire for answers outweighed his self-enjoyment. He stared towards the Maze gates which were still open.
You're goanna figure it out. Teresa consoled, speaking with their uncanny connection.
How do you know? Edward asked back, as strange warm smile blossomed on his face.
Because of the person that you are. You guys said yourself that you found a possible way out. We're all goanna get out of here. You'll see.
Thank you Teresa. I really needed that.
...................................................................................
From down below, Thomas observed the distant but visible conversation between his younger brother and Teresa. He could tell his brother looked happier and seeing him like that made him feel lifted too.
"Seems Teresa was right," Newt said, sitting next to him. "She could help him. Well done for letting her,"
All Thomas could do was smile, but Newt sensed a sort of dislike in his face colours.
"Thomas...she's not goanna steal Edward away from you,"
"Woah! Woah!" Thomas blabbered. "You think...? Okay Newt. They just met each other like yesterday. They are not a thing okay? Not on my watch anyway,"
"She recognised him. And he definitely knew her before he came up here with you,"
"Doesn't mean they're a thing. And they are most certainly not going to be. Not where they don't really know anything about each other,"
Thomas's frown deepened as Newt just expressed a goofy grin. "What?"
"Someone's going into overprotective brother mode,"
Thomas huffed and crossed his arms. "Don't be ridiculous. And come on, you'd be the same about your brother and sister too,"
Her words which were spoken without thinking made Newt's goofy grin disappear. Instantly he regretted it. "I'm sorry. I wasn't thinking,"
"It's okay,"
"I'm still goanna hold you up to my promise Newt. We are more closer than ever to getting out of here. And when we do, we'll find him or her. I promise,"
Newt seemed to feel a little cheered up when he said that. But once again his mood changed much to Thomas's confusion.
"What?"
"You're hiding something,"
"I'm not hiding anything,"
"Come on. Whatever it is, just show me. I wouldn't judge you a single bit,"
Thomas saw the truth in his eyes. He reached into his pocket and pulled out the pendent that he had discovered at that secret door with his brother and Minho.
Newt stared down at him with extreme shock. "Where did you find this?"
"It was right in front of the secret door that we found back in the Maze. It's just like yours. I should...probably give it to you," he offered it.
"No. You can hold onto it for now,"
"I couldn't,"
"I insist. It would really ache my heart wearing that with my own,"
"Okay. I'll hold onto it for you,"
"Thanks. Thanks for showing me,"
After slipping the necklace again into his pocket, Thomas stared out again towards the open doors.
"You still reflecting on your first run?" Newt asked.
"Yeah. It felt so strange that my instincts...just led us right back here. I almost felt like I had run that Maze before, like I knew which path to take or what obstacles to avoid. I probably sound weird,"
"Yep. Very weird," Newt chuckled.
Thomas chuckled with him. But once again his experiences outweighed his want to be optimistic.
"You look scared Tommy,"
"I am Newt. I'm scared that that Griever who had a voice speaking from it, might come again. I'm worried he's goanna kill my brother," his voice turned hoarse. "I can't let that happen,"
"Hey..." Newt shuffled closer to Thomas. "It's going to be fine. Those gates will close and we'll be safe in here tonight,"
"You've no idea how close it was to killing him," Thomas sounded like he might erupt into sobs any minute now. "I can't help but feel we're being watched. Every day here. Like maybe the people who put us here...might be waiting for a moment to strike, to..." he couldn't finish. He didn't want to make Newt more nervous than he already had. He fell silent again, ignoring Newt's concerning face. He hung his head down, placing his hands around his neck.
He felt Newt's presence right next to him but didn't turn. Newt didn't leave his side. He was going to stay there whether he liked it or not.
Something small began nudging against his foot but he wouldn't turn his head. It became more annoying so he kicked it away.
"Ouch," Thomas felt he had kicked something very hard and stiff.
The thing he had kicked away let out a metallic screech.
"What was that?" Newt asked.
Thomas stood up and walked over, bending down. He saw a long silver cylindrical body with multiple legs coming out of its side and two antenna out of its head. It looked some sort of centipede made of metal with red glowing eyes and the words WICKED written down its torso.
"What is that?" Thomas turned to Newt who crouched down beside him.
"I've seen one of those before,"
Once again Thomas was curious so he picked it up.
"Careful," his new friend beside him warned.
Thomas looked at it carefully. He thought he had busted it because it took quite a huge hit from his kick. Just then he saw a tiny small black lens right above the metal creature's antenna. He peered into into carefully. He almost felt he could detect something being recorded. "No way,"
So the metal creature in his arms started moving. He jumped and he dropped it. The tiny creature scurried away like a rat into the nearby woods.
"Oh shit..." Newt cursed.
"That was definitely some sort of camera," Thomas said. "We really need to get out of here,"
Right after he said that, the duo heard the voices of boys running forward carrying torches towards the gate.
...................................................................................
Teresa and Edward were enjoying their telepathy conversation when they suddenly saw what was going on down below.
What's going on? Teresa wondered.
I don't know but it doesn't sound good. Edward said.
"Ed! Teresa!"
Edward and Teresa leaned over to see Thomas shouting up to him.
"You gotta come down now!" he implored desperately.
Another chapter done. What did you all think? I even added in the Beetle blade camera from the books. I hope you all enjoyed the interactions between the characters. That's one of the things I love writing about in this story. Please leave reviews and let me know what you all thought. Anyways looking forward to the next chapter.
