The maze
Y/N's P.O.V
"Oh, you silly, silly girl." Thomas shook his head as he rushed towards me. My eyes widened as I was expecting him to grab me or something but instead, he hugged me tightly, gently holding the side of my neck with his hand.
"You're giving me mixed signals, Thomas." I chuckled slightly. He sighed and pulled away so that he was looking at me but his hand was still on my neck.
"You're so infuriating. You're as good as dead now, no one survives a night in the maze. But at the same time, I love you for running in, it was so brave and I wouldn't be able to protect Minho by myself." He admitted. I smiled and nodded as he hugged me again.
"We'll get through this. All we have to do is survive the night." I spoke.
"Well, that's easier said than done, especially with Minho hurt." Thomas sighed, pulling away from our hug to look at Minho, who was still laying on the ground.
"What happened?" I asked as I crouched next to him and looked at the wound on his lower leg.
"A griever attacked us. It didn't sting him, so he'll be okay, but it scratched him up pretty bad." Thomas nodded. I looked at him before standing up and going to him.
"What are you doing?" he asked as I put my hands over the seam that joined the torso of his shirt to the sleeve. I ripped down, tearing the sleeve off of the shirt.
"Hey!" Thomas scoffed.
"Minho will die from the blood loss if we don't get that wrapped up. If we cover it, at least he has a fighting chance. Well, that's if we all survive the night." I mumbled as I started to tightly wrap the material around Minho's leg.
"Jesus, Y/N." he hissed at the pain.
"Sorry." I gulped as I stood up.
"So, what's the plan?" Thomas asked.
"I can't move much." Minho sighed, sitting himself up against the wall of the maze.
"What do we do, then?" I gulped. Thomas thought for a moment before looking around. His eyes widened slightly.
"You have something, don't you?" I asked. Thomas nodded and looked at us.
"Yeah. Minho, we tie you up high into those vines, which will protect you from the grievers overnight. Y/N and I also hide overnight, then we come back in the morning to get you." Thomas nodded.
"I don't like the sound of that. I'll be a sitting duck." Minho scoffed.
"A sitting duck that will be too high up for the grievers to get to, let alone the fact that they won't be able to see you because we'll bury you in the vines." Thomas nodded. I looked at Minho.
"It's our only chance, and the sun is setting." I gulped. Minho sighed before groaning.
"Fine. If it keeps us alive." He nodded.
"Okay. Let's do this." Thomas gulped.
"You okay up there?" Thomas asked as we pulled Minho up and into the vines.
"Considering that I'm going to be tied up here for the night to avoid being turned into a zombie by genetically modified bugs, yeah, I'm okay." Minho nodded, making us chuckle.
"Okay. Don't make any noise. We'll be back for you in the morning, so don't go anywhere." I spoke.
"Ha fucking ha." He mumbled, making Thomas smile.
"Okay, we're good, now we just have to-." My eyes widened and I put a hand over Thomas's mouth, shutting him up. His eyes widened as we heard the growl of a griever. I gulped as I slowly moved my head to look behind Thomas.
"It's behind you." I whispered. He gulped and nodded as I lowered my hand.
"We need to run. Now." He whispered, slowly taking my hand and carefully walking towards me.
"Three, two, one...go!" he yelled before starting to run, pulling me with him. We ran faster as we heard the griever start to run after us.
"This way, here!" he shouted, taking a sharp right.
"Shit, it's a dead end." I sighed as we looked at the wall.
"No, no it isn't. There's a gap up there. I'll push you up, then you pull me up." He nodded.
"Okay." I gulped as he pushed up on my hips, lifting me into the air. I scrambled into the gap before leaning back over, allowing Thomas to take my hands. He groaned slightly as he climbed up the wall and into the gap as the griever sprinted around the corner and to us.
"Shit." I gulped as it screamed and tried to scramble up the wall.
"It's okay, it can't climb, we're safe." Thomas reassured as I scrambled back into his chest. I gulped as I looked up at him.
"You're okay. I'm not going to let anything bad happen to you." He spoke gently. I gulped before giving him a small smile.
"We should probably get some sleep." I spoke.
"Yeah, good call. We should be safe up here for the night." Thomas nodded as he lay down, me following his lead so that we were spooning. I smiled to myself as he wrapped an arm around my waist. I looked at him over my shoulder.
"We need to keep warm. And I, er, I don't want to lose you." He admitted. I gave him a small smile and nodded before laying down fully again.
"Goodnight, Y/N." Thomas whispered.
"Goodnight, Thomas." I replied before letting my eyes flutter shut.
I opened my eyes slowly and yawned as I looked around. I squinted my eyes, taking in my unusual surroundings before remembering where I was. I looked down and smiled slightly as Thomas's arm was still wrapped around my waist, meaning that my back was rested against his chest.
"Hmm." He mumbled as he slowly opened his eyes. He looked at me.
"Morning." I smiled. He returned it before looking around.
"Looks like we survived a night in the maze." I spoke.
"Don't speak too soon. We still have to get Minho, and then get out." He sighed. I nodded but then stopped as I heard growling. My eyes widened and I slowly turned around to see a griever next to me.
"Thomas, run!" I screamed.
"Oh shit!" he yelled as he scrambled out of the gap and to the ground. My eyes widened as the griever drove its stinger into my waist, immediately sending waves of agonising white-hot pain coursing through my body. I choked as blood started to ooze from the wound.
"Y/N, hurry!" Thomas yelled.
"I'm coming!" I shouted back, my voice wavering as I crawled out of the gap and allowed Thomas to take my waist.
"We've got to go, now." he spoke, taking my hand and starting to pull me along.
"Oh my god, you made it." Newt laughed as we wandered back into the glade, Thomas helping Minho as he limped along.
"Just. Y/N and I nearly got attacked by a griever this morning." Thomas sighed as I subtly held my wound.
"You two okay?" Newt asked.
"We're fine." Thomas spoke. Newt looked at me.
"Really? Y/N, you look a bit pale." He spoke, making Thomas look at me.
"I'm fine. Too much sun." I lied.
"Okay. Well, get yourself to the medical shack if you feel worse." Thomas nodded.
"I will. For now, I think I'm just going to lie down." I spoke, feeling everyone's eyes on me as I walked back to Thomas's shack.
I got to the shack and stumbled in. I cried out as I collapsed onto the bed.
"Woah, you okay?" I looked up and sighed as Thomas stood at the doorway.
"Yeah, I just...I feel lightheaded." I nodded. His eyebrows furrowed as he walked in.
"Y/N, you don't look well." He sighed, crouching down in front of me.
"I'm just coming down with something, I'll be fine, I swear." I shook my head. Thomas sighed again as he put his hand to my forehead. His eyes widened.
"You're really burning up, let me take you to the medical shack-."
"No. I don't want to bother people, it'll be nothing, Thomas. I'm fine." I reassured. He sighed and nodded before standing up.
"Okay. But promise me that you'll go if you deteriorate." He spoke.
"I promise." I nodded. He sighed and returned it before gently kissing my head. He gave me a small smile before leaving the shack. As soon as he left, tears started to leave my eyes. I don't want to leave him. I didn't want to die. But I couldn't tell him. Either way, it was too late.
I lay in bed, tossing and turning as pain slowly but surely spread throughout my body. I wrapped the blankets tightly around my body, trying to slip away from the coldness that was taking over my body, despite the thin layer of sweat glistening against my skin. Suddenly, Thomas rolled over and wrapped his arm around my waist, nestling his face into my hair. I couldn't help but smile at his unconscious action. I felt like I was home in his arms. Being with him made me forget where we were, and made me think only about what really mattered: us. I gulped, knowing that it couldn't last. I gently slipped out of the bed, being careful not to wake him as I let his arm softly thud against the bed. I stumbled out of the shack and into the glade, where it was still dark. It wasn't cold, but it was cooler than it was during the day. I was guessing that it was around two in the morning. It didn't matter, though. When everyone else would eventually wake up, no one would know exactly what time it had been when I had slipped away from Thomas and into the glade, never to be seen alive again. I gulped, tears brimming in my eyes as I stumbled into the woodland of the glade before collapsing against a tree. I looked down and lifted my top up with shaking hands to reveal the spreading griever sting. I closed my eyes, allowing tears to roll from them as I rested my head against the tree trunk. Why hadn't I been more careful? Why had I run into the maze at all? That was a simple question, with a simple answer. Because I loved him. I loved Thomas. And if running into the maze meant dying with him, I would do it again. I looked down at the sting again, at the foul black liquid oozing from it. I pulled myself up, resting against the tree and taking a step. I cried out as I fell, not strong enough to carry on. I rested my head against my arm before letting my eyes flutter shut, a final tear falling from them.
