Chapter 18: Freshman Year Summer 2

Lemme explain to you what the flock is. I had told Fang that I liked birds: how they were always flying free, how they protected one another, how they all seemed to be friends and look like they were playing tag. Fang had nodded, saying it was kinda like our group of friends. Then he made all of us birds. He declared that Angel was like a swan; graceful, poetic, beautiful. Nudge was like a woodpecker, he had joked. But in a serious voice, he said she was like a hummingbird, always moving, always looking bright. Iggy was like that weird bird that puffed out its tail feathers to attract girl birds, and danced, from the Disneys Earth movie. Gazzy was like a canary, always singing and always happy. Fang said himself was like a hawk, always soaring and never stopping. Then, he said I was like an eagle. Proud, strong, free.  After he had named all the birds we were like, we had decided to call ourselves The Flock; we were a group of strange, weird birds but yet we were there for each other. And that became our unsaid motto: Band together, birds unlike a feather. That's how we became the Flock.

An hour later, the Flock and I were all sitting in Fangs basement, which was renovated into a hangout area, with couches and lounge chairs. The boys were playing Dance Dance Revolution, and so far, Iggy was kicking Fangs butt. "I am..." He paused as the game came to a close and did the Michael Jackson striking pose, "VICTORIOUS!" Fang shoved Iggy roughly, but I knew he was joking when Iggy started dancing and wiggling his butt. Fang whacked Iggy upside the head, shaking his own head, and sat down on the couch where I was curled up with my laptop. I was on Mybook, a social networking website where you could connect with friends and family.  He glanced at the laptop screen and raised an eyebrow, "Mybook? Really?"

I stuck my tongue out at him, "Yes, really. I wanted to check the schools page."

He rolled his eyes, but watched as I clicked the link and shifted through the comments and posts. "There it is!" I grinned, clicking on the picture. It had the tech crew, which included Fang and I, in our black t-shirts that said 'Tech monkeys', and black jeans. I was standing next to Fang, smiling brightly, as Fang stood there looking bored.

"You never smile for pictures, do you?" I asked Fang, looking up at him, my face agitated. He smiled briefly, "Nope."

I rolled my eyes, looking back at Mybook. "There's a comment from Dylan," I said slowly. Fang tensed, looking at it.

It read:

"Good job Tech Team! :o)"

He had tagged everyone he was friends with, which did not include Fang or I. I kept looking at the comments, and grinned at a few of them. I clicked the comment button, and started to type my own.

"Everyone did an amazing job! Couldn't have asked for a better group of Tech Monkey friends! @Fang Ride"

I grinned as I clicked the 'comment now' button. Fang's eyes narrowed at me. I grinned innocently.

Ella and Nudge were sprawled on the floor in front of the TV watching the fashion channel and making sounds of happiness at the outfit they liked, or sounds of dislike at the ones they thought looked ludicrous. Angel went over to sit by them, holding her stuffed dog and watched the screen with interest.

I shut the laptop and turned to Fang, "So, what are the plans for tonight?" I asked, shifting so I was sitting cross legged. He shrugged and replied, "Whatever we want to do."

"Go streaking down the road?" Gazzy called, cracking up at the joke he had made. Iggy threw a pillow at him, causing Gazzy to fall off the back of the couch he was sitting on.

Fang rolled his eyes, standing up, "Who wants icecream?" He asked, tensing in anticipation for the riot he was about to receive. "I DO!" Screams erupted, as I laughed as they all raced each other up the stairs.

I grinned at Fang, "You knew that would happen," I told him accusingly at his mock-shocked face. He smirked, following the group up the stairs. I followed, smiling slightly. I had the best friends in the whole world.

Two hours later, everyone was filled up on ice cream, popcorn, and pizza as we watched a new horror movie called 'Rock a die baby'. It sounded stupid, but I had to admit, it was terrifying. Angel and Gazzy were forced to go to bed before the movie had started, for the fact they wouldn't sleep if they were allowed to watch it. Ella and Nudge were curled up together on the loveseat, eyes wide and hiding their faces at points that were scary. I was sitting next to Fang. Both of us were trying to conceal our laughter at the 'scary' parts. We were failing.

Izzy was next to Ella, his arms wrapped around her, as she screamed and buried her face in his chest. He looked like he was in heaven. Fang and I looked at the screen, then at eachother, then we both burst into laughter. Nudge sent us a glare, but quickly put her face back under the covers to block the hideous duck face that came on the screen.

"Le-Let's turn it off!" Ella said, clutching Iggy's arm. He grinned and held her closer, murmuring that it would be okay. I bet you he just wanted to hold her longer.

Fang and I just laughed.

An hour and a half later, the movie was off and it was about one am. Everyone was settling down to sleep, and I grabbed the blankets and helped set up the cots.

Ella and Nudge claimed the floor in front of the Tv, Iggy claimed the recliner, and I called the couch. Fang helped me set up the pillows and blankets for everyone, and I laid down on the couch at one end while he laid on the other end. "Excuse me," I glared, "I don't share my couch."

Fang just smirked at me, poking me with his socked foot. I scrunched up my nose, shoving his foot away, "Gross! I don't want your smelly feet near my face." He laughed quietly, then went quiet. Everyone was quiet, and soft snores sounded through the room. I glanced at Fang, whose eyes were closed, and slowly drifted off to sleep, a small smile on my face.

-FANG-

Fang looked up slowly, when he thought Max wasn't looking, and sat up slowly as to not wake her up. The blonde's hair was in her face, her lips parted slightly as a soft snore came from her pale lips. Her mouth was in a small smile, her eyes closed. Fang thought she looked beautiful as she slept. Grabbing his notebook from under his pillow, he pulled out a pencil and began sketching Max as she slept.

He watched her sleep, a smile played faintly on his lips as she murmured his name a couple times, along with a couple 'you're so cute'. As he watched her sleep, he thought of his last girl best friend, Amelia. She was like Max, but different. Max wore jeans, ratty tennis shoes, and t-shirts while Amelia had worn skirts sometimes, dresses, and jewelry.

Fang had loved her.

But, after the accident, Fang had closed up. He had never opened up to anyone, other then Iggy, ever again... Until Maximum Martinez had come into his life. From the moment he met her, he knew she was amazing. The way she laughed, her smiles, the way they knew each other so well even if they hadn't known each other for very long.

Was he... No, he wouldn't think of that. He couldn't be.

As Fang finished the sketch, he checked the time, and read that it was three AM. He set the notebook down, watching Max once more, then slowly drifted off to sleep himself.
