Masterpiece Awards - 2020 Reviews

These reviews are a mix of praise and critique. My critiques are meant to offer some ways in which the story can improve.

These are solely my opinions. You may take them or leave them.

Class of 95 by LaurieBeth5

I love how this story has a female lead, Eunice, with curves. It was what was so appealing to the story. I also liked how this begins with an underdog, a former nerd, is heading to the high school reunion triumphant, a successful author with bestsellers several times over. What prevented me from reading further was the amount of tell that started this story.

I recommend the author start with the scene between Eunice and Connie at the hotel and filling in what's needed as they head to the reunion. It's a simple scene but there's a lot that can be explored if the author is dedicated to showing.

In Pursuit of by DragonsDreaming

This story starts with a hella scary kidnapping that I wasn't expecting at all and was a pleasant surprise. The problem I had, though, was with the narration. Like with the other Romance participant, there was too much tell happening. Further, I found the narration to be detached, removed from the intense emotions the lead character must have been feeling throughout this terrifying experience. Because of this, I didn't feel as immersed in the scene as I would've liked.

The plot was awesome. I was really looking forward to reading further. Just wish there were more intensity in the style of storytelling.

Fresh Start by SapphireAlena

Although chapter one was rife with conflict and deeply developed characters that I connected with, the succeeding chapters focused almost entirely on world building and not enough on further conflict and plot development. There's a sweet budding romance but it takes a bit too long for it to blossom. So, I wish for more balance, plot progression and a quickened pace.

The Urban Mantra by peachyindy

This is a sweet story about a couple of young musicians who are following their passions and their dreams of performing their music across the world. I just wish there were more conflict. The characters seem too content at the onset of this story.

What would be helpful to continue to read this is for the characters to feel some longing, some daydreaming about the future, some insecurities, some secrets. This would begin the drama and thus, the story.

The Wildflower and the Wildfire by lifeasd

This was a fascinating opening. Great cliffhanger. Nice slice of life, too. Because the blurb set up the surprise return of her long-lost friend, I was expecting it. But I was not at all expecting THAT kind of return, which is awesome!

Now, while I was also expecting there to be alternations in time, it is my preference that the story continue in the present rather than to go back and forth. This is only my preference, though. Others will surely enjoy this story. It is very well done.

Getting Wilder by booklored

I was so so looking forward to this story. I am always psyched to see diverse stories being told, including LGBTQ+ ones. After the opening scene, however, this was hard to get into. Maybe later chapters are more engaging but I found myself drifting in and out of the story as it went from one scene to the next.

In the first chapter, there are three scenes loosely connected to a party with many many characters introduced. The first chapter ended with the third scene where the lead character helps his sister, which I struggled to be invested in after meeting the full host of other characters. I would have liked to have learned some some more about Wilder (awesome name) and Camden before being introduced to the sister. So, I wish this to be tightened up and refocused.

Conclusion

All of these stories are all recommended. I think anyone on Wattpad would want to read them. So pick them up and read them, today.
