Chapter 3: Sunset

After remaining in the patch, holding the note tight to his chest and weeping, Hinata dragged himself up off the ground after regaining slight composure. Glancing back down at the flattened patches of grass that had been left from himself and Kageyama, he sighed and looking in the direction of his home, shedding a final tear before turning and taking a step forward.

As Hinata returned to the outskirts of his small village, where the streets were bustling in the early morning sun. Citizens greeting each other with hope-filled smiles and a joyful 'good morning.' The shops had just opened for a long day's work and children ran from house to house giggling with glee as they enjoyed the dewy morning. The peaceful moment was broken with loud screaming of his name as 4 figures headed straight towards him.

"Oiiiii Hinata!" One of them yelled as he skidded to a halt, his bald friend doing the same. Two taller boys who were taking their time soon followed.

"What're you always doing in that forest, you didn't come home again last night!" The bald one questioned as he shoved his face in front of Hinata's making an inhuman face.

Blushing, Hinata quickly answered his friend, "N-nothing!"

"He's probably meeting up with some girl so his mom doesn't find out and embarrass him." The tallest one taunted.

"Not true!" Hinata defended. "Either way it's none of your business! If you want to know that badly, there's a chance I might tell you later." The boys looked at one another and shrugged, they didn't feel any need to force Hinata to tell them and cause unnecessary drama.

"Well, either way, Tanaka's mom made too many cookies so you should take some home for you and your family." The short energetic boy said as his just as energetic, but bald friend handed a small basket to Hinata.

"Thanks, Tanaka, these smell really good. Oh and Nishinoya, tell your mom, my mom says thanks for the homemade bread she gave us, it was even better than usual!"

"That's my mom's bread for ya! Best in town!" The short boy smiled proudly as he pointed a thumb towards himself.

"Oh, by the way, Tsukki's mom has been working on a new quilt and said she'd love your mom's opinion next time she drops by." The second tallest boy stated as the tallest, sighed and continued, "Yeah, my mom isn't sure what cloth to use for a section and your mom's always a big help."

"Ya I'll be sure to let her know, she's working on some medicine for that cold your mom's got, too Yamaguchi," Hinata reminded.

"Great! Thank you, Hinata! Her cold isn't letting up so it'll be a great help." Yamaguchi thanked.

The boys continued talking about whatever came to mind, Tanaka and Noya repeatedly mentioned Kiyoko while the rest blabbered on about random topics such as food. Aimlessly they walked around town laughing without a care in the world as if time didn't matter to them as they lived in the joy of them moment. Running around with the town children, and stopping by the library to say hello to Kiyoko and Yachi.

As the town clock struck 12 the boys agreed to split up and go home for lunch and then meet up once again in 2 hours. Saying goodbye, Hinata went to the outside of town returning to the old 2 story farmhouse he called home, with the basket of cookies from earlier still firm in his hand.

"Mom! I'm Home!" Hinata greeted as he walked in the front door.

"Welcome home sunshine!" She responded, "I'm about to start making lunch in the kitchen, if you're able could you come help me please?"

"Sure! I've got some cookies from Tanaka's mom too so we can eat them with lunch!" Hinata beamed as he skipped into the kitchen and handed her the basket.

"Well isn't this lovely, I'll have to find some sort of way to thank her." She stated as she took the basket.

"So." She blurted as she turned around suddenly, placing her hands on her hips and looking straight at her son with a smirk "Let me guess for lunch you want......hmmm....I don't know you're in a good mood as always so I'm gonna guess-"

"MEAT BUNS!!" Hinata screamed, bouncing up and down. He may have been a teenager but he always had the energy and attitude of a joyful child.

"Haha, that's what I thought, so how 'bout we get started on those" She grinned as she ruffled her small sunshine's hair.

Hinata and his mom worked hard to make delicious meat buns for their little family as Natsu, his little sister returned home and patiently waited, engrossed as she watched her Mom and brother dash from one side of the kitchen to the other working hard while throwing flower and other cooking ingredients at each other here and there. Eventually, Natsu got up and joined the minor food fighting as they danced around the room. All three of them laughing as a family as they slowly made progress on their meat buns.

The three of them sighed in sync as they looked at their completed meat buns still steaming as they each took one and gathered together in the living room.

"Well, these have to be some of the best meat buns we've made yet if I do say so myself," Their mom said as she took another bite of her bun.

"MMHMM" Hinata somehow scream-mumbled in agreement with food in his mouth.

"These are really tasty mom!" Natsu declared, a warm smile of joy across her face.

"Hinata slow down or you'll choke," His mom said chuckling as her son looked over at her with stuffed cheeks. "Oh Hinata, you never think do you?"

"Do so!" Hinata retorted. "See I didn't choke!" he continued pointing towards himself.

They then paused for a minute as a silence lingered between them as they then all burst out laughing enough to cause tears to form in the corner of their eyes.

Once they had calmed down their mom randomly told them something they already knew,

"I love you both so much, please, never forget that." kissing them both on the cheek.

Hinata and Natsu both looked at each other and then back at their mom and nodded to let her know they'll never forget.

"Good," she continued. "How about I take those plates of yours back to the kitchen now?"

"Thanks mom!" They answered in sync as they handed her their plates.

Hinata and Natsu watched their mom exit the room and then returned to blabbering about random thoughts that they drew from their minds. They sat there laughing in giggle with smiles spread across their faces, a joyful but simple moment they all cherished. But that moment quickly turned into one that would haunt their minds as they heard a loud crashing sound come from the kitchen.

"MOM!" They screamed in unison as they ran towards the sound and kneeled beside their mother who had collapsed onto the floor. "WHAT HAPPENED?! ARE YOU OKAY!?"

"Hinata, Natsu, don't worry. I'm alright, I just slipped on some water that was left from our cooking." She answered chuckling and smiling weakly, her smile quickly transferring to a vicious cough.

"You're not ok! You need a doctor!" Hinata remarked as he helped his mother into the other room, laying her down on one of the old couches.

"Doctor!" Natsu repeated dashing around the room, tears streaming down her face worried about what to do and what was happening to their mom.

"S-stay here, I'll get help. Natsu don't leave mom's side" Hinata demanded putting his hands on his little sister's shoulders.

"Do you hear me? You have to stay here and make sure she's okay while I go get the doctor."

Natsu nodded, assuring her brother as she sat down and took her mother's hand in her small one.

"I'll be right back!" Was the last thing Hinata said before running out the front door.

Hinata quickly squeezed between the crowds on the streets as he made his way towards the local town doctor. It was one of the few moments he was truly grateful for his small size.

In a matter of minutes, Hinata reached the Doctor's office and busted through the front door.

"Doctor Asahi! Hurry! My mom..." He dragged off, gasping for air.

"Your mom what?" Asahi questioned quickly stopping what he was doing and frantically rushing over to Hinata.

"S-she suddenly collapsed and won't stop coughing." He took a final deep breath and finished telling Asahi the details. "Please hurry, Natsu's home alone and I need to be with her! We're both scared and we don't know what to do. Please help us!" Hinata begged, tears now streaming down his face.

"Of course! Hurry let's go to your mom and sister." Asahi answered, startled as he grabbed his bag and slipped on his jacket. Letting them quickly leave the doctor's office and return to Hinata's home.

After blasting through the front door Asahi and Hinata ran over to Natsu and her mother who was still lying across the couch.

"Quickly Hinata, help me get her up and take her to her room, Natsu you grab my bag, open the door and roll up the sheets for her."

Hinata and Natsu reacted immediately as they both did as they were instructed. Hinata helping Asahi get his mom into her bed while Natsu made sure her mom was comfortable.

"Thank you, Hinata, Natsu. Could you please step out of the room so I can check on what's wrong with your mother?" He said to them with a weak but caring smile.

They nodded and left the room, holding each other's hands and hoping that their mother, their only family aside from each other, would be okay.

Hinata and Natsu waited patiently on the couch in the living room, the remains of tears left on both of their faces as Asahi worked to find out what was going on. After a long enough time period that allowed Natsu to fall asleep, with her head resting on her brother's lap, Asahi walked downstairs and entered the room with a saddened look on his face.

He shook his sister's shoulder waking her up from her peaceful sleep, her sleep that created dreams that everything was okay and the same as always.

They both then looked at Asahi and awaited whatever news he had for them.

"I really don't want to say this but I also know I can't lie to either of you..." Asahi paused taking a deep, shaking breath. "The truth is, your mother has come down with a severe and rare illness that currently has no possible treatment and..." he dragged off once again, " She probably won't make it to tomorrow." Asahi looked towards the floor as he waited to hear their reactions

After a few moments of letting the Asahi's words sink in, they both felt their hearts shatter. Hinata took the news in a way Asahi didn't expect. He had expected Hinata to burst out into tears and beg him that it wasn't true. But instead, he just lost the colour from his eyes, sitting there, staring at the floor with absolutely no expression. Not only had Hinata lost the ability to see his best friend but now his mother wasn't going to even going to make it to tomorrow?!

And then Hinata broke completely, bursting into tears and taking his crying sister into his arms. Both of them sat there crying until they had run out of tears to shed. Asahi patiently waited across from them until they had calmed down.

"When you are ready, your mother is in her room waiting for you two. I think it would be best if you both went to talk to her."

They sniffled a final time and wiped away their tears while taking a deep breath. They both stood up, Hinata holding his hand out for his sister as they walked upstairs to the room their mother was in. They took another deep breath as Hinata grabbed the door handle and slowly opened the door to his mother's room allowing them to walking in, taking small, gentle steps as if one sudden movement would cause the room to fall to the ground. Once they entered completely they saw their mother lying in her bed, the light of the sunset across her weak, pale face but with a genuine smile as she saw her two balls of sunshine walk in.

Still holding hands they walked up to her and sat in the chair that had been placed next to her bedside. Hinata placing his sister on his lap as they both looked at her with saddened expressions.

"Hey mom..." Hinata whispered, returning the weak smile.

"Hi mommy.." Natsu greeted as a whisper, following her brother's actions, unsure of what to do with the situation.

"Hello my sweeties.." She replied as Hinata gently held her hand with his free hand. Pulling it slowly towards his chest as if he moved too quickly she would fall to pieces.

Natsu following the action by reaching over and putting her free hand with theirs.

"I'm so sorry mom... If I had noticed I could've helped you soon-"

"Shhh Hinata, it's ok. None of this is your fault I promise." His mom said, cutting him off.

"Everything will be ok, I just know it. I guess you could call it mother's instincts." She continued with a smile as both Hinata and Natsu quietly listened, the few tears they still had slid down both of their cheeks.

"You've always been such good children and I truly love the both of you. I always knew I could count on you two to come bouncing in and making any day better." She stated, wiping the tears from her children's faces.

"So promise me that even though I'll be gone you'll continue to be happy and know there are people around you who will help you and care about you as much as I do. Never forget you also have each other so support one another."

"B-but mom how are we supposed to be happy without you?" Hinata questioned, tears now pouring down his cheeks.

"Ya, mommy. We need you, don't leave us." Natsu continued in agreement, joining her brother, having a river of tears flow down her cheeks as well.

"That, Hinata, Natsu, will be up to the two of you." She calmly replied. "Just know. I love you both and no matter what I will always be by your sides. I love you Natsu. I love you Shouyou."

And with that Hinata's mother's hand fell limp from their own falling softly on the bed she lay on, her eyes following as they gently fell shut, peacefully passing leaving Hinata and Natsu were left alone to cry in each other's arms as the light of the warm sunset softly touched the entire room.

A/N

Sorry, this chapter took so long to post everyone! When I originally wrote this chapter I didn't like it and didn't get in the mood to rewrite it for quite awhile, but it's finally here. I'm now quite proud of it and I hope you enjoy it. I also ended up making it way too long (2 thousand words) but I didn't want to cut it in half so here's a very long chapter.

I got a little emo while writing both from the story and listening to haikyuu ost's because those make me emo too.

Anyways there may be a delay with the next chapter since I want to rewrite it as well but I'm also busy with school and just general life. I'm also just starting to get back into my writing groove that I lost for awhile, I haven't been able to draw either, I don't know.

Anyways I'll get the 4th chapter out eventually but I want to be proud of it so it may take awhile. Thanks for sticking with me and reading this fanfic, I hope you've enjoyed it as much as I have so far. ^^

A/N Part 2: (note: written quite a while after the first A/N)

I am so so so sorry this has taken so long to update. I was on wattpad and saw all the positive comments you guys had and it really motivated me to fix and write the fourth chapter so I could get this one uploaded. I hope you all enjoyed it and once again I am so sorry. I had little to no motivation to do anything creative for quite awhile but recently I had started to get back into it and then your comments made me realise that I need to get off my ass and do something other than watch youtube. With this story. I find it's better if I write when I feel like it but sometimes I also just need to force myself so I can remember how much I love it. Thank you guys so much and I'll work hard on chapters 4 and 5 so you can get those asap.

Also, I wanted to point out that this story takes place not in a medieval setting but not in modern times, it's a time of kingdoms, horse and carriages, brick/ dirt roads etc. I wasn't sure if it was obvious but I thought I'd point it out. If you need a better idea please watch Snow White With The Red Hair, it's what this story's time/era setting is based off of.
