Chapter 2: To Say Goodbye.
Hinata and Kageyama continued to meet up every day. They had agreed to meet at their spot in the forest daily and spend days laughing and playing games. The days went by in seconds, years went by in minutes. Before either of them had realised, they had both turned 16 and their friendship had grown an indescribable amount. It even got to the point that they had both developed deep feelings for the other, but neither had the guts to confess
"I'm going to the forest now!" The small orange-head yelled in the general direction of his mom.
"Wait!" His mom chased after him. "Since you rarely make it back in time for dinner, take this." She held out a small picnic basket filled to the top with food. "There's some in there for your friend since I know you can't stand being alone for such a long time." she winked.
"Thanks, mom!" The little ball of energy took the basket and ran out the door at full speed, trying to prevent its contents from spilling out in the process.
By the time Hinata reached the patch in the forest Kageyama was already there. He was lying against a tree, deep in thought with more of a scowl than usual.
"Hey, Bakeyama! What's with the face?" Hinata questioned as he trotted up and sat beside the scowling boy.
Kageyama's face returned to normal as he snapped out of his trance.
"N-nothing," He stuttered. "I'll tell you about it later. First, you have to tell me what took so long."
"Well I'm sorry, I can't run as fast as usual with this," Hinata answered, placing the basket in front of his friend.
"What is this?" Kageyama confusingly asked as he peeked into the basket.
"Dinner, since neither of us ever make it back in time." He replied, a smile twinkling across his face.
"Also my mother figured out I was meeting with someone because she knows I don't like being alone for long periods of time."
"She's got that right." The raven boy teased.
The two of them spent the day like they always did, laughing, telling each other stories and arguing about who's turn it was in every game they played. As their day came to an end they both lied down in the middle of the patch to watch the sun disappear and the stars shine through the darkness.
"Hey, Hinata?" Kageyama grabbed Hinata's hand as they both continued to look at the star filled sky.
"Mm?" Hinata mumbled in reply.
"I won't be able to meet up with you here tomorrow." Kageyama using all his effort to tell Hinata.
"Ok, I'll just see you the day after." The orange-head continued nonchalantly.
"I won't be able to meet up then either. In fact, I won't be able to ever again." Kageyama tried to prevent tears from spilling out of his eyes when he saw the look in Hinata's eyes.
"W-what do you mean you won't be able to? We agreed we would always meet up here."
Kageyama took a sigh preparing to tell his friend the truth.
"I never told you but I live in the nearby kingdom, Prince Kageyama Tobio is what they call me. I didn't tell you this because you were the first person to accept me for me and not treat me like some high ranked prince. It was really a dream come true for me." Pausing, he took a deep breath and continued, worried about Hinata's reaction. "A little while ago my parents found out I was meeting up with you in the forest. Whenever I got home I would write about my day with you in a book I would hide. They found it and my true feelings were revealed, my father got annoyed and said I need to find a wife, not some lowly farm boy. I'm no longer allowed to meet up with you. I'm sorry."
"True feelings?" Hinata asked, on the brink of tears.
Kageyama looked Hinata in the eyes and said 3 words he never expected to hear.
"I love you."
He immediately looked away regretting his decision but unlike Kageyama expected he didn't get an "I hate you." Or "that's disgusting." Instead, he felt small arms wrap around him. He looked back to see Hinata crying into his chest.
"Why didn't you tell me sooner?" He asked in between sobbing.
"I didn't think you would accept me..." Kageyama mumbled.
"Of course I would, you're my friend and I love you so much, it doesn't matter who you are."
"Wait? So you mean...?"
The small boy wiped away his tears, looking Kageyama straight in the eyes, a smile across his face.
"I love you too."
As soon as those words were said, they immediately connected their lips for a soft kiss. Kageyama too broke down and started crying along with Hinata.
"Why did this have to happen now?" Hinata spouted.
"I don't know..." The raven haired boy answered, trying to sooth himself and Hinata.
"H-hey Kageyama will you promise me something?"
"What is it?"
"That we'll see each other again no matter what."
Kageyama hugged Hinata as tightly as he could and promised him that they would see each other again.
"Good, I'll work as hard as I can to earn the respect and trust of your parents and I will see you again." The orange-head wiped away his final tears and smiled his biggest smile as if to say he will never give up.
That night they fell asleep in their patch, in each other's arms. The bright light of the moon acting as if they were under a spotlight. By the time Hinata woke up, Kageyama was already gone, a note left in Hinata's hand.
Hinata opened the letter and read its contents. Goodbye, I love you was all it said.
Don't say goodbye idiot, we promised we'd see each other again. The thought making him smile as he looked in the direction of Kageyama's Kingdom.
"And I swear I will keep that promise."
