Chapter 8

I was feeling great when I woke up. Smiling, I stretched my arm to my right only to find the place empty. Frowning, I sat up and looked around for Amber. Maybe she left for the hospital.

As I got up, wrapping the sheet around my torso, the door flung open and Amber came inside.

Oh, so she didn't leave. But she was dressed for work. "Good morning, please get freshened up, I'll prepare breakfast." She said as she opened the curtains to let the sunlight flood in. My arm instinctively went up to hide my eyes from the stinging rays of the sun.

"You need to get ready too, I have a job interview scheduled for you at Peterson's Corp. At 9 am sharp." She rambled on. I cleared my throat.

"Okay," I croaked and went to the bathroom. I noticed that my toilettery items were neatly placed beside the vanity and shower tray. I smiled. My wife is indeed an organized person. She's alteady making me feel well at home. After takings a shower, I came out of the bathroom, thinking of pressing a suit for my interview only to find a grey suit, starched and pressed, lying on the bed. A huge smile danced on my lips.

Oh Amber. She's so caring.

I got dressed and went to the kitchen. The fresh smell of eggs and coffee was sublime.

"Hmm," I hummed deeply. Amber was busy by the counter. How much I wanted to see this scene; my precious wife preparing breakfast for me and I would come from the back and envelope her in my arms. As I approached her, she swiftly turned around. "Please be seated, I'll bring you your eggs and coffee in a second." She said hurriedly and rushed to the stove. I chuckled and came at her anyways.

As soon as my arms wrapped around her waist and my nose buried in her hair, she stiffened. "Good morning, love." I murmured alluringly. "Let's leave this for the bedroom," she said and removed my hands from her waist. I was surprised but it was expected. I glanced at my wrist watch. We had plenty of time. I gazed at my darling wife who was busy in making eggs, she looked different; they say that a newly wed Virgin maid blooms after her first night and maybe it's true because Amber looked radiant. Her tan skin caught a healthy glow. Her cheeks were slightly flushed and I might be wrong but her lips were full and pouting out. I smirked, feeling satisfied. But I wanted to look into her eyes to know what she was thinking about. I badly wanted to know what she was feeling about Mr right now.

I straightened behind her and leaned against the counter, staring her hoping to make eye contact with her.

But that wasn't what was making me feel awkward. I noticed that Amber wasn't making any eye contact with me.

"How are you feeling?" I asked as a took a seat on the small dining table at the corning of the kitchen. My eyes were glued to her body that was contacted moving around.

"I'm fine. Now please eat up." She replied without looking at me and placed my plate and coffee in front of me. My stomach gladly anticipated the delicious food in front of me as it began to rumble. She sat opposite to me with a mug of coffee and a dossier in her hand.

"Can I have your phone please." She said so formally. I frowned slightly because her eyes were on the dossier. Shouldn't she be looking at me? This is our first morning together as true husband and wife but I couldn't help feeling that my wife is giving me the cold shoulder.

Maybe I wasn't gentle enough with her. Maybe I've hurt her.

I took her hand that was gripping the mug and placed my other hand on it. "What's wrong Amber? Why are you treating me so formally? Did I do something wrong? Did I hurt you?" I enquired honestly. She frowned and took her hand away. "Of course not. Everything is fine. And please don't talk about bedroom stuff outside. Right now we need to settle down a few important matters. So I need you to be serious as well. If I have a problem then I won't hide it and I will confront you around it." She said and looked straight into my eyes.

I suppose that was a satisfactory reply. I nodded and began my breakfast. I gave her my phone and she placed a new sim card in it. "My number is saved in it and I also have your number. So call me after you're done with the interview. I'll come to pick you up." She insisted. My ego wasn't in agree with what she was saying. It was disgraceful for me that I had to be dependent on my wife foe everything but thank God it's only temporary. After I'm oriented with the roads and routes, I won't let Amber do anything. Rather I'll make sure that she's comfortable and will do everything that a good husband should.

"After the interview, I'll take you to a driving school to have your licence made." She said. I smiled and nodded with wholeheartedly. I wasn't into disobeying the law and drive without a license.

"You're very organized. You planned everything out." I commented as I took a sip of my coffee.

"Of course. Now get ready, we leave in five minutes." She ordered and left the kitchen. I went to the sink and rinsed my mouth.

As we went, Amber explained all the routes and roads to me. Everything was saved up in the GPS. I needed to buy a new car soon. I had enough savings to buy a good one. Maybe I can take this small Honda from her and buy her a brand new Ford or Chevrolet. However my plans went down the drain when I found that most of the cars on the road were limited to hondo and corolla and suzuki. Oh well, any good car will have to do.

I have to admit, this city comprised of small buildings and I wasn't used to it because of my habit of looking at tall skyscrapers all my life. But the population seemed as much crowded as NYC.

When we arrived in front of a building that looked fifteen stories tall, Amber stopped at the entrance. She escorted me to the lobby. After she explained to the receptionist in Urdu, she nodded and told me to follow her. "Wait please." I said to her and went to Amber who stood at the exit.

"Hey, come here," I gently grabbed her arm and took her to a corner. I know she wasn't expecting this, but I gave her a quick peck on the lips which caused her to chagrin. I knew she wouldn't approve. I chuckled.

"For good luck, see you later babe." I muttered and ran back to the receptionist, leaving a disapproving Amber behind.

**********

"That stunt you pulled, it was highly inappropriate." Amber yelled at me as soon as I sat in the car.

"The interview went well, thanks for asking." I said mockingly. I knew this was coming.

She glanced at me through her shades but continued driving. "Please don't ever do that again in public, okay?" She said but in a softer tone this time. I smiled and put on my shades as the noon sun was high in the sky.

"Anyways, how did it go? Did you land a decent position?" She inquired.

"Not just any position," I said, my mind going back to the interview. "They gave me the position of managing director." I breathed. I was shocked when they took a small interview and without even viewing my resume, they handed me the position like it was being offered in abundance or something.

"I can't believe this. Why would they give such a good position to a fresh graduate? I don't think I'll be able to handle it."

"Why? Aren't you happy that you got such a good position in a well renowned company?"

"I am but I'm just astonished. I'm the interview they just asked me why I was in Pakistan and when I said because I moved in with my wife, they asked me about you and when I told them that my wife is a doctor, they immediately congratulated me and told me I was their new managing director at the arch tire department. It's surprising wouldn't you agree?" I asked and looked at her. She was quietly driving until a light chuckled escaped her lips.

"Not really. I knew they would hire you immediately and not just hire you but I also anticipated that they would give you a good representative position." She admitted.

I raised a brow. "How so?" I was completely fazed.

"Because you're an American that's probably why. And for an American company like Peterson's, its only on their best interest to hire an American that came up to them on a silver plater and give a good representative postion."

"I don't get it. It's like you're telling me that I was given special preference only because I'm American."

"I suppose you can say that." She muttered and came across a petrol station. "But this won't be good for me. It might arouse jealousy among the other employees. I wanted to be treated noramlly." I mused. She rotated her neck and began staring at me. "Just be thankful, please." She said and jumped out of the car. I sighed. Yeah I'm very grateful but I don't want any trouble. Maybe this is what Allah has willed for me and I suppose it's the best. Putting this at the back of my mind, I focused on Amber who was giving money to the guy at the petrol pump.

"I think you also need to start attending an Urdu school. I'll search for one and then tell you about it." She said as she sat inside. I nodded. Yeah I suppose that necessary.

After she dropped me off at the licensing facility, my day passed in a blur. But I had this urge to get my laptop and make some arrangements. I needed to make some transactions from my account. Thankfully, be also took me to a bank and I had that sorted out.

**********

After dinner which consisted of pizza, I helped Amber with the dishes.

"It's okay, I got it." She said as she took the plates from me. "It's wanna help out."

"Its okay. Please go and rest. You've had a long day." She insisted. I reluctantly agreed and went to the bedroom. After a quick shower, I offered Isha prayer and climbed into bed. Waiting for Amber, I turned on the TV. Flipping through the channels, I randomly came across CNN. I graoned.

I was missing home so much. Even more then that, I was missing Gran even more. I took my phone and dialled her number on skype. She immediately answered.

"Sonny, good morning."

Oh right, it's morning in new York.

"Hey Gran. How are you?" I spoke, my voice almost breaking. I wanted to see her so much.

"I'm great Sonny, its so good to finally hear from you. I was beginning to get worried."

"Don't be. By the grace of God I made it here safely."

"I'm glad to hear. How's Amber doing?"

"She's great." I looked at thw door to be sure that she wasn't here.

"Actually, she's wonderful. She's taking good care of me. She's making me feel welcomed here. Even though I'm getting home sick so much, she's making me feel comfortable." Subha Allah.

"I'm glad to hear that. Looking at her, I could immediately tell that you married the right woman. I'm happy for you Sonny. If she's doing so much for you, then you need to do something for her too."

I furrowed my eyebrows together. "Like what Gran?"

"Like a gift or something."

"Yeah, I'm thinking of buying her a car as a wedding gift."

"I think it's a good idea."

As soon as I heard movement outside the door, I sat upright on the bed. "Okay Gran, its late here. I'll call you some other time."

"Okay Sonny. Please take good care of yourself and your wife. Please call soon."

"I will don't worry. And keep yourself always online okay. Bye, love you."

I disconnected the call and began waiting for Amber.

Amber . . . . Bree. I don't know why, but I want to call her Bree.

As soon as she entered the room, I smiled.

"Hi," I said to her. She was placing the towels on the nearby rack when I blurted out.

"Bree!" I called her. She looked at me and frowned. "Bree? What's that?"

"My pet name for you." I snickered. Her frown deepened.

"I don't like it." She said firmly.

"Why? Do you already have a nickname? Care to share." I teased, dancing my brows. She rolled her eyes at me. That made me chuckle. She looked surprisingly cute this way when she's agitated.

"No and I don't need one either."

"Well, I'm gonna call you Bree anyway." I said with finality and laid down, flinging my arms behind my head.

"Bree? It sounds like a cow's name." She said as she sat with me on her side of the bed. I laughed hard at her asseasment. "What makes you think that?" I tried to contain my laughter but failed. Her eyes widened and she threw her pillow at me. Woah, she's got some fight in her as the pillow hit me some force. I smirked at that.

"Oh my God, it is a cow's name, isn't it?" She almost yelled when I started laughing again. I stopped myself after a few seconds and stared at her sincerely.  She wasn't happy with this as a displeased expression marred her face. "Nope and all jokes aside, Bree was the name of my three year old cat who died last year. Ever since she died, I became lonely and that's when I decided to get married. So you remind me of Bree. I'm gonna call you Bree from now on." I affirmed. She stared at me for a few moments. "And you can call me anything you like."

"Alright then," she shifted towards me. "How about uloo!"

I raised a brow. "Uloo? That's sounds funny. What does it mean?"

"It means an owl."

"Oh," I tried to stifle a laugh. "It maybe not be as cute as an owl but I sure am wise." I said rather smugly.

"No, not wise, you just resemble an uloo," she said and began to chuckle. I didn't want to argue any further so I just chuckled.

"That so sweet of you." I muttered. She pursed her lips tightly I detected signs of amusement in her eyes.

"Or maybe your just naming me in retaliation because uloo sounds a bit off too. Are you sure its an owl?" I said and started to come near her. She nodded. "Yes, it's hundred percent an owl." She said but her eyes were downcast. I placed a finger under her chin and raised her eyes to meet mine. I smiled and brushed my lips tenderly against hers.

"I have some work to do, so go to sleep." She stated and got up. I grimaced as she left.
