39|Questions and contemplations

Knox muttered a curse after his fifth attempt at trying to contact Lisa. He had been trying to get a hold of her ever since April had told him earlier about Lisa's plan to visit. He wanted to know just what prompted such a bizarre idea of hers. April had said, Lisa said she was better but Knox knew Lisa's better only lasted for a month or less.
He didn't want her coming around and shaking things up for April- giving her false hope and the perception of a mother that Knox knew Lisa could never really be.

Slamming his phone against the kitchen counter, Knox raked a hand through his hair in frustration.

"Everything ok?" Gina came into the room asking, her forehead wrinkling with concern.

Knox quickly cleared his throat and managed a smile. "Yeah, just something I've gotta take care of," he said, not wanting to tell Gina about Lisa until he got a handle on things. Things were already tense as it was.

She nodded comprehensively and went to pour herself a cup of coffee, glancing at a stiff- shouldered Knox. "Listen Knox, I'm sorry about what I said last night. I didn't mean...I didn't mean to-"

"Gina, it's fine," he quickly cut in with a reassuring smile, but seeing that Gina didn't look convinced, he preceded to kiss her lightly on the lips. "Everything's fine."

She smiled. "Ok good."

"Hey, I'm going to head to the office for awhile. Can you keep an eye on April for me?" he asked, watching as Gina's mouth opened to form a reply. "I mean she has her nanny and-"

"Knox, it isn't a problem," she smiled, patting him on the arm before she left the room.

Knox sighed.

An hour later Gina and April was in the living room, watching The incredibles with a bowl of popcorn at their disposal. Although Gina had quickly agreed to basically babysit when Knox had suggested it, she had been skeptical and anxious about the whole thing. But after he left, getting along with April seemed effortless and to make matters easier, they discovered they both liked their popcorn extra buttery.

April laughed at some shenanigans that was happening on the tv screen. "I love Jack Jack. He's so adorable," she exclaimed, eyes trained on the television while munching on her popcorn.

Gina nodded in agreement, seemingly captivated by the program which was surprising because when April had made the suggestion, she never thought she would be actually enjoying a cartoon.

"He is, but my favorite is dash."

"I like elastigirl; she's a great mom," April commented, Gina glanced at her noticing the way her entire demeanor changed.

She reached for her small back. "Would you like to talk about it?" she queried, sensing where the comment stemmed from and why it made April sad.

April looked at Gina, her eyes a bit wide, obviously never expecting the question. "Are you sure?" she asked and Gina quickly nodded with a smile.

April released a small sigh. "It's just that I barely remember the times my mom was really there, you know? I remember when I was sick and she would be there at times and then she would disappear for a long time. I used to think she was just scared of my sickness - that she wasn't strong enough to see me sick, but even when I started getting better, she never stuck around," hanging her head, April began to fidget with her fingers.

Gina gently rubbed her back. "Honey, I'm sorry..."

"I know dad isn't my real dad but he was always there for me, you know. Everytime I woke up from the hospital or after a treatment, he was always there for me... Always..." she looked at Gina with tears pooling in her big beautiful eyes. "So why couldn't my mother, who gave birth to me do the same? How could she choose drugs over me?" she questioned and a trail of tears made her way down her face.

Feeling a full ache in her heart for the child, Gina knew she didn't have the answers she needed to hear so instead, she scooted over and embraced April in her arms. Shortly, her small body began to vibrate with sobs, Gina holding her tighter. She felt like crying too, for all the crap she went through in her own life but refrained from doing so because she knew she had to be strong for April.
She didn't understand why Lisa did what she did, but she knew that when there was a need to escape and feel something apart from pain, it never really goes away until the pain stopped. For Lisa to abandon her child, however, was something Gina couldn't really grasp, but for Knox to take on the responsibility, was simply commendable.

"I don't think I want her to come here," April exclaimed between sobs.

Gina's brows knitted. "What do you mean, sweetheart?"

April eased up, her face pink and wet. "She said she was coming here, but I don't want to see her. I don't think I want to," she sniffed and Gina momentarily froze, trying to put her words into perspective.

"Your mom is coming here?" Gina asked for clarification, unable to believe the words she heard.

April nodded as she wiped the tears from her face, oblivious of the secret she just spilled.

***

Hours later when April decided to take a nap, Gina was downstairs with her brain a rollercoaster of scenarios and mindboggling thoughts. She was unable to get what April said out of her mind.

How could Lisa be coming to America- to LA and how was it that Knox failed to mention such a big thing to her?

She didn't understand why he would keep something of such great importance from her, after everything that has happened. He had to know she was coming, but she wouldn't say anything until he did.

Gina had began pacing the room when Knox came through the door. Catching her in the act, his brows furrowed as he gazed at her curiously.

"Hey, everything ok?" he asked before he made his way towards her.

Gina managed a tight smile and nodded. "Yeah, everything's fine. April's taking a nap."

Knox approached and kissed her on the lips, his hands circling her waist as he pulled her closer to his body. Seeing the direction inwhich things were heading - seeing how casually be acted despite the big secret hanging over them, Gina took a step back, watching as he gazed at her questionable- his brows furrowed.

"Ok, what's wrong?" he asked, looking her straight in the eyes.

Gina bit the inside of her jaw and lowered her gaze to the floor, contemplating on whether or not she should bring up Lisa's visit. Not long ago she had silently vowed that she wouldn't mention it until he did, but she didn't know how long that would be and she definitely didn't know if she could keep the fact that she knew a secret.

Gina cleared her throat. "Um, I was just wondering if you heard from Lisa lately," she said, returning her gaze to him.

Knox didn't reply right away as he gave thought to the question and her entire composure.

"No, I haven't." Gina scoffed, ready to argue before Knox continued. "But she spoke to April... And I'm assuming by your standoffish disposition that April mentioned that she's coming here."

Gina shifted her stance and folded her arms. "Why didn't you tell me? Can you imagine how it must've felt for me, hearing it from April instead of you?" she asked, eyes wide.

"Gina, I found out lastnight and I didn't tell you because I wanted to hear from Lisa first," he explained, his gaze attached to hers as he spoke.

Gina swallowed. "And have you...heard from her?" she asked anxiously.

Knox released a breath and shook his head. "She's still not picking up any of my calls."

Gina scoffed, shook her head and moved towards the kitchen with purposeful strides.

"Gina...." Knox called, his reply silence.

Retrieving a bottle of water, she slammed it on the counter just as Knox was reaching out to touch her. Looking at the frazzled expression that took residence on his face, Gina sighed and rubbed at her temple, trying to ease what was suspected an impending headache.

"I'm not ready to deal with Lisa's presence Knox," she admitted in a calmer tone.

        "I know and-"

"I don't think April is either so I think you should just tell her that she's not wanted here...unless, Ofcourse, you want her to come," she shrugged, studying his expression.

Knox's eyes darkened to slits. "Gina don't be ridiculous!" he exclaimed.

Gina rose a brow. "About what part exactly?"

Silence mingled for a few aggravating seconds.

"I don't want Lisa here anymore than you do Gina, but if she decides to book a flight and come here, there's not much I can do to stop it," he reasoned softly.

Gina nodded her head slowly, comprehensively. "Well if I'm being honest Knox, I don't think I want to handle your baby-mama drama. This marriage has been through so much already and I just think that..." she stopped herself and sighed, licking her lips, looking at Knox who awaited her next words ....

"I don't think it will survive another spin on this rollercoaster," she muttered, tearing her gaze from Knox before she walked away and left him standing there, shocked by her words.
