28|In sickness and in health
Media: 'In love again' by Colbie Caillat. Enjoy.
The phone slipped from Gina's hand and fell to the floor. Immediately Sally ran to her before she could do the same. Holding her by the shoulders, she gazed into her now blurry eyes and gave her a gentle shake after seeing how distant she had gotten.
"Hey, he could be fine. You have to believe that he is," she said, staring her straight in the eyes.
As if compelled, Gina managed a nod while her lips quivered. "But look at the car, Sal," she croaked out, the tears now streaming hotly down her face.
Sally, not knowing what else to say, pulled her in her arms and embraced her warmly. "We can go to the hospital if you'd like," she suggested, gently massaging Gina's back.
"Yes, please," she sobbed, withdrawing as she immediately moved towards the door, Sally behind.
The drive to the hospital was spent with Sally trying to assure Gina that all would be fine. Occasionally she would stretch her hands across and pat Gina reassuringly on the leg but it did nothing to ease her worry. She was anxious and on edge and all she could think of was Knox hurt and that ate at every fibre of her being.
She didn't want to think about the worst case scenarios but couldn't help doing so. She had locked him off these past weeks and if anything happened to him, Gina didn't know if she would be able to forgive herself. She didn't know what she would do if he was seriously hurt. She had so many things to say to him and only hoped she had the chance to.
"Why couldn't I just forgive him?!" she blurted in a broken tone. "If I had, none of this would be happening and he would be fine."
"Hey, you can't blame yourself for any of this. You had pretty good reasons for needing some distance-"
Gina shook her head. "I was selfish too. He left to save a child from a life of horror for God's sake, and I held that against him. I..." pointlessly she brushed the tears from her face..
"Gina-"
"Who I chose to become was not his fault. I had a choice Sal and I chose to be the wild rich girl. That girl didn't have a choice when an illness threatened to take her life. Knox- he made the biggest sacrifice ever; he left his life behind and he took up the role of a single father to a child that isn't even biologically related to him. How - how could I not have seen how good of a man he is?" she asked, looking to Sally with tears pooling in her eyes.
"Gina, you still can't beat yourself up. The fact still remains that Knox hurt you and he kept things from you that he shouldn't have," Sally softly said.
"But I still shouldn't have been so hard on him either and now he could be laying in a hospital bed and I just don't know...I don't know what I would do if he's seriously hurt."
Sally gave her leg and gentle squeeze. "You just gotta believe that he is fine GG and that belief will carry you straight through until you know he is."
Sniffing, Gina nodded. "I'm just scared," she admitted.
"I know sweetie, I know."

"Jesus, don't these people have lives?" Sally said upon seeing the media scattered across the hospital grounds.
The last thing Gina wanted was media attention but regardless of their presence, she knew none of them would dare try to delay her in seeing Knox. Barely managing to properly stop the car, Gina opened the door and stepped outside, allowing Sally to properly park.
"Go, I'll be right behind you," Sally said, putting the car in reverse.
Gina nodded and jogged to the doors. Of course the media immediately caught sight of her and swarmed her like bees.
"Gina, where was Knox going? The crash happened near the airport. Was Warner leaving the country?" one insensitive reporter asked, shoving a recording device towards Gina's mouth while he and the others awaited an answer.
"Was Knox upset about the video? What is it like in the Warner- Gray residence?"
Gina shoved her way through them and ran inside, sobbing when she was safely inside. But it was as if more eyes were on her as people passed, whispering like they always do. Her head swirled when the whole aura of the hospital hit her by full force.
Her breath caught as she watched the gurneys dashing across the room with doctors running alongside them with intensely sick persons occupying the beds. There was the strong and suffocating smell of bleach and soap and in her ear was a lady's voice in the speakers, calling a doctor to report somewhere. Gina spun around in circles, trying to hold on to herself while she thought of Knox and what might be going on with him in the wretched place. She didn't know what to do, gosh she felt so lost.
But luckily, a hand reached for her from behind and muttered, "come on, let's go." Turning around Gina realised it was Sally who then ushered her to the elevators and then to another area of the hospital. As soon as she left the elevator, Gina looked around, her heart beating faster with the realisation that this was the floor Knox was on.
She walked a little further where she came upon some persons seated in the visiting area. She recognised a seated man, elbows on knees with a small bandage on his forehead. Gina gasped, her eyes widening to saucers when she saw who it was.
She stopped, his name like a whisper on her lips. "Knox?"
Though there was no way he could hear judging by the distance and the softness of her voice, he looked up and saw her standing there.
Gina watched in amazement as he stood and it was like her world found footing again. Immediately, she ran to him while he briskly walked to meet her, his movements a bit stiff. Gina flung herself into his arms and wrapped her arms around his neck, burying her face in his shirt as she sobbed. Knox held her firmly, he held her closely as if she was the life he had almost lost.
He didn't want to let her go and miss the amazing feel of her, he didn't want to let her go and risk losing her again, so instead he held her tight, happy she was there... Happy she was there for him. Knox clenched his teeth as a bout of emotions threatened to overwhelm him. His grip tightened around her, despite the dull aches in his body. His hand trailed along her head, smoothing out her long name of brunette hair.
"I thought you were badly hurt," Gina whispered, slightly easing off to look at him. "I saw how wrecked your car was and I thought..." she trailed off as another sob threatened to spill.
Knox cupped her face with both his hands. "I'm Ok, sweetheart, I'm fine," he reassured with a gentle smile while he used his thumb to brush the tears from her face. "I thought you left..."
She shook her head. "No, I couldn't..." she sniffed. "You were going after me?"
He smiled. "I was bu-"
"You could've been badly hurt," she acknowledged, staring straight at his face and glad too see the small bruises. She was happy it wasn't worst.
"But I'm not, it's my driver I'm worried about. His side took most of the blow and now he has a nasty head injury and a broken leg," he said with a small sigh.
Ginas mouth slightly fell open. "You had your driver? Where's he?"
Knox nodded. "He's in the ER."
Gina felt sympathy for the man and knew that Knox could've been the one in his situation if things were different.
"I'm happy you're Ok," she softly said, hugging him once more, only then realising how great it was to feel so relieved.
The hug lingered on for almost a full minute, feeling as if they were the only persons in the room, Gina realising that the idea of losing him only made her love him more.
"Gina," Knox said as he ushered them to empty chairs. He turned to her, his hand holding hers. "I- I know I should've told you what I was doing when I left - my actions were inexcusable. And after coming back I was a complete ass and I'm sorry for that also. I'm sorry for messing things up every chance I got and..."
"Stop," she cut in softly. "You don't have to apologise again Knox. We both made stupid mistakes and have behaved impulsively but I'm willing to move on past those things with you. When I thought I lost you today it only made me realise how much I love you and how willing I am to make us better."
Knox was overwhelmed hearing words he at one point didn't think he'd hear and it made him happy, so much so that he just had to sit and admire Gina, constantly reminding himself that this was his woman and the woman he never stopped loving.
"I love you so much," he said, the words falling effortlessly from his lips. "And I know there are still some things we need to discuss but for now I'm only happy you're here for me. Thank you."
Gina sniffed through her joyful tears. "I love you too," she replied, their lips briefly touching before he embraced her in his arms. She closed her eyes against his chest and for the first time in years, she felt truly happy.
