Chapter Six

Ashley finished dressing Mark's wounds. He smiled at her and nodded his head. Getting off the hospital bed, the paper crinkled as he moved. He walked out of Med bay and made his way over to Adam who was standing outside the holding cell, unlike old cells, this one was computer controlled and could only be accessed from the outside, those who are trapped in the cell could not escape. Mark had entered the room and saw that Adam was watching Sean from the other side of the glass. Mark wanted to keep his mind off what Ashley said. Ashley mentioned Sean differed from others and that his kind hadn't been around in centuries. If Adam could tell Mark what Sean was, then maybe there could be a way to stop the impending revolution.

"So what is he?" Mark asked, determined.

"A kitsune," Adam responded. Mark turned to look at Sean and realized that he was staring directly at him. Mark avoided his gaze and focused all his attention on Adam. "Kitsune's are fox spirits. They're common in Japanese Folklore," he continued. "It's rare for Kitsunes to appear in this lifetime, unless it chose Sean."

"They can choose who they want to possess?" Mark asked, not understanding where Adam was going.

"Or they can be born with the spirit in their bodies." Adam nodded.

"What are we going to do to him?" Mark questioned.

"We've got a Kitsune in our holding cell. We can take his blood and clone him," Mark glanced at Adam, waiting for him to continue. Adam raised an eyebrow and sighed. "We're sending our scientists to test him." Mark turned back to the glass and witnessed the scientists enter the room. Mark watched as Sean attacked the scientists. Mark's eyes widened with shock. They struck Sean with an electric wand. He turned away, the screams muffled behind the glass. Mark uncovered his eyes and saw Sean lying limp on the floor. Angered, he grabbed Adam by the shirt and pulled him close.

"What are you doing?!" Mark demanded. "You said nothing about hurting him!" Mark listened to what Adam said and brought Sean to the facility unscathed.

"Don't worry, he's fine," Adam reassured Mark and pushed his hand away. "All they're doing is taking blood from him." Mark was astonished. Everyone told him the truth. They were right. Everything about this felt wrong, and they planned to clone Sean and create some darkened version of the kid.

"He's not doing anything! Just defending himself!" Mark said, taking in what was happening. "I thought you were studying him! Not cloning him!"

"Either watch and be amazed or get back to your quarters. I'll call you when I need you." Adam ordered. Not taking his chance in arguing, Mark walked back to his room. Thoughts circled his head, thinking that he had to do something. Arriving at his quarters, he placed his hand on the sensor and the door slid open. Amy had been getting dinner ready, but Mark couldn't think about food, only getting Sean out of there.

"Hey Amy." Mark said, walking toward the master room.

"Where are you going? Dinner is almost ready." Mark shook his head as Amy turned the stove off, placing food on the plate. Mark opened the closet and pulled out a black duffle bag, stuffing it with clothes. "Alright, what happened?" Mark gave Amy his undivided attention.

"I've been thinking about what you said last night... and," Mark said. "You were right. Maybe these people we've hunted are special. I learned Sean is a Kitsune." Amy paused, stunned into silence.

"A kitsune?" Amy said. "What's a kitsune got to do with Sean?"

"They're hurting him," Mark replied, allowing a small tear to escape from the corners of his eyes. "What do I do, Amy?" Mark sat down on the bed and rubbed his face like he didn't exactly know what to do. He struggled to think about his loyalties. How else would he be able to go through and do his job if most of his job required killing people? Amy sat down next to him and rubbed his back reassuringly.

"If I know anything about Kitsune," she said. "They don't accept aid from anybody who isn't willing," Amy continued. "But if you really want to help him, decide and do it of your own free will." Mark nodded and thanked his girlfriend for helping him understand what he needed to do. A smile appeared on Amy's mouth as she kissed his forehead and got up. She walked out of the room, leaving Mark alone with his thoughts. Earning his loyalty might be the only way for Sean to let him help. He knew a few things about Kitsunes for starters they hate being confined since they were free spirits and second, Sean might just be learning his powers as well. Not thinking much about it, Mark finished getting ready and got some food from the fridge.

"Be careful Mark, they're tricksters!" Amy warned.

"That's a risk I'm willing to take, I'll be back Amy, I promise." Mark pressed a button on the door and it slid open. He walked through the hallway and made his way to the holding cell.
