Chapter Four
Sean raced through the forest until he came across a small cave. Remembering what his brother taught him, Sean dug a hole until he could fit and crawled in. Taking off his bag, he set it next to him and dug through it wondering what else was in it. Sean took out a sleeping bag, a small pillow, and a combat knife. There was more in it, but at the moment, his main priority was to have his sleeping bag and pillow out. The combat knife in his hand was cool to the touch. Sean examined it and saw his brother's initials engraved on it. Tears threatened to fall as Sean got ready for the night. A thought suddenly appeared to him, especially about what happened a few minutes ago.
"What is going on?" he said to himself. With this question repeatedly going through his head, he crawled into the sleeping bag and fell asleep.
Sean stood in the middle of a forest again, but there was something different about it. The strange atmosphere made it seem like he needed to be there.
"Sean," a feminine voice said in the distance. "Follow my voice." Sean wasted no time in following the voice. It grew louder as he got closer. The further away he walked, the more the same electrical energy appeared. He came across a large temple, vines hid it from view and he wondered why he was there. Like he belonged there.
"Where am I?" Sean asked to no one in particular.
"You've arrived, young one." The voice said, a woman with long black hair and an orange dress stepped out. She smiled at Sean, leaving an impression that nothing bad was going to happen.
"Who are you?" Sean questioned.
"You are at the temple of the Kitsune," the woman responded. "It is not important who I am. What's important is that you must survive. You can't let him take you."
"Who? Mark?" Sean asked. "My brother is dead, I have to do something." the woman simply shook her head.
"That is why it's important that you find your way here," she explained. "This place is sacred. It's only when the fox inside you awakens for the first time will you will be able to find this temple." She said. "And as for Mark, he's an important part of your journey."
"But I thought this temple was in Japan."
"'tis not," says the woman. "Only your spirit will know the way," she continued. "You must be ready to defend yourself at all costs," she kept talking. "I can't stay for long. The hunter is right on your tail. When you wake you will see something around your neck, it will be your first tail." Sean opened his mouth to say something, but she held up her hand. "No Sean, you will not have an actual tail. It'll be like a necklace. As you progress as a Kitsune, your powers become stronger." the woman paused as if to listen to her surroundings. "You must go now. Mark has gotten closer to your hiding place. Good luck Sean, and remember, your powers are your own."
Sean bolted awake to leave being crushed against the ground. He took a deep breath and touched his chest. Something cool and metallic appeared around his neck. He looked down and saw that he did indeed wear a necklace, only it had black beads and a fox pendant with one tail was hanging from the chain. Sean thought back to the dream he experienced. It was a dream that gave him a purpose. Something that not even the government could take away.
"Where did you go?" Mark said from above. "You can't hide forever," Sean stayed in his safe cave expecting Mark to come down before him. "Whatever you are, you must come with me." Sean glanced at his combat knife and slowly reached for it. He grabbed the weapon and gripped it tight, ready to defend himself. Sean crawled over to the hole and climbed out, not realizing where Mark was. A bad feeling came over him. Sean turned Mark had jumped off the top and knocked him onto the ground. His blade slid from his hands and landed five feet away. Sean let out a groan and, using his feet, he kicked Mark in the chest and sent him sprawling into the dirt. Sean jumped up and grabbed his knife.
"I wasn't expecting you to come out from your little hide hole," Mark said. "You are making this too easy." Mark ran at Sean, swinging his own blade. It would have cut him if he hadn't moved out of the way. Shaking his head, Sean watched as Mark switched his blade into a chambered position. Another swing, only this time, Mark struck Sean in the arm. Sean stumbled and ran at him, throwing a punch, but Mark saw through that and grabbed his arm. In a swift movement, Sean found himself slammed against the ground, the air knocked out of his lungs. "That's more like it." Mark sat on Sean's stomach, his eyes grew wide and Mark swung the blade down, nearly colliding with Sean's shoulder. On cue, Sean held up his arms into an 'x' blocking his enemy's attack and pushed with all his strength. Sean strained at the sheer force Mark had let loose. Power surged through his body. He grabbed Mark by the arms and lifted him up. Using his foot, he kicked Mark over him and he flew, landing in the dirt. Sean forced himself to his feet and he approached Mark's body. There was a cut on his lower lip and a wound on his forehead, defeating Mark was within his reach, until another force from behind slammed into the back of his head and the next thing he saw was darkness.
