Prologue

Oliver squeezed his wife's palm, though it really seemed like it was the other way around. Nurses were all around them, comforting Diana while at the same time giving her orders. They were in the delivery room, and Diana was about to give birth to their first child. Oliver was feeling so many emotions, but he just tried to focus on holding his wife's hand while she pushed.

A nurse with curly red hair was in front of her, helping with the delivery. "You're doing great, miss, you're almost there. I need you to give me one last push, okay?"

Diana squeezed his hand to the point it was purple and screamed. Right when Oliver thought his hand was going to pop off, Diana relaxed, panting hard. All of the doctors in the room started getting to work once they were safely holding their newborn.

The red-headed nurse who was carrying their child and stopped, frantically bringing her finger to the baby's neck and froze. Oliver's blood ran cold when she desperately yelled something to the other physicians and they are started moving hastily, taking their infant to another room.

Diana weakly pushed her sweaty blonde hair out of her eyes and attempted to sit up. Oliver gently set a hand on her arm but was already having a small panic attack.

"What's happening?!" He yelled, but no one came to answer him. It was only a couple of minutes later when a different doctor walked into the room. Oliver felt tears prickle in his eyes when he saw the look of anguish on the man's face.

Diana was the first to break the heavy silence. "Wh-where's our baby, doctor?"

The doctor made eye contact with both of them before sighing.

"This was supposed to be a perfect delivery. None of the tests we took during your pregnancy showed any signs of concern, and you yourself are perfectly healthy."

Oliver sucked in his breath in fear as he felt a "but" coming. He glanced at Diana, and she was doing the exact same, probably even more terrified than he.

The physician's shoulders drooped heavily as if some massive weight was placed on them.

"...but at some point, either during the delivery or shortly after, your baby had stopped breathing."

Diana moaned in agony and put her head in her hands, shaking all over as sobs racked her body. Oliver felt his own world collapse on top of him, and he could faintly feel his own tears slowly running down his face. He could barely register what the doctor said, yet it was all he could hear in his head. "...your baby had stopped breathing"  reverberated in the hollow walls of his head. Even the doctor's voice cracked with emotion as he spoke.

The doctor bowed low. "I am truly sorry for your loss, Lady Diana," he paused to turn to Oliver and bow as well, "and Prince Oliver."

Oliver didn't hear his statement. Everything in him shut down into an empty numbness.

Diana spoke. Oliver shuddered, as it wasn't the voice of his lovely wife who treated all with kindness. No, it was the voice of a lonely and broken girl, both filled with painful emotion and yet dulled from it all.

"What.......gender..."

She couldn't even form the rest of her words, but she has said enough for the doctor to understand. Oliver brushed the tears out of his eyes and tried his best to focus on the doctor. He had to hear it. He had to.

"Your baby was a beautiful baby girl, milady."

Just as quickly Oliver had wiped his tears away, they came crashing down on him with a force even stronger than before. He quickly dismissed the physician, who thankfully left quickly and quietly. Oliver hugged Diana as mourned together. Mourned of the baby they lost and mourned of the future lost with their little girl.

"...Daisy......" Diana whispered after a while. "Her name is Daisy, and I won't ever forget her." Oliver didn't say anything, just continued to hold her. 'A beautiful name. It's perfect,' he thought. 'Our little Daisy...'

Oliver tilted Diana's head gently so their eyes met. Her once soft brown eyes were filled with such grief, and something else buried so deep he was sure he was hallucinating. Under all of her emotions, a void was growing. A void will with an emptiness so terrifying he almost pulled away. But he couldn't, his wife needs him.

"Diana, I swear to you, I will never let you or myself forget our baby girl, or God forgive try to 'replace' her. She will be in our hearts, forever."

Diana nodded as he kissed her gently, both still too heartbroken to say anything else. They stayed in the room, simply hugging each other, until almost an hour later when the nurses finally came to check on them.

As they tried to coax the prince to leave his wife, Diana whispered something. He bent down as far as he could so he could hear her.

"...I feel like.......almost........as if we're being watched..."

Oliver sighed and kissed his wife's forehead. She was exhausted and just went through hours of labor, only to be hit with the news that their baby didn't live. He was almost certain she was imagining it.

Yet...he can't help but listen to the tiny voice in the back of his head, whispering that she was right. Even though he wanted it to be wrong and was practically certain he was, something stirred in his memory.

Right when the doctor gave the news about Daisy's passing, he thought he heard something. It was only for a split moment and was quickly dismissed by the constant waves of emotion, but he could have sworn...

He heard someone chuckling.
