[Author Note: In the book Goodwives, Amy has a going away party she pays for for her friends. I am using some of the ideas from that part of Miss Alcott's book. But in her book Beth is still around and this was after Meg's wedding. Not all scenes changed! Enjoy! More to come!]

Chapter 5~Artistic Attempts

I had not saw Laurie since we got into a little argument. We were all getting ready to say farewell to Miss Amy. Then our Jo was going to be leaving us to. She decided to head out to New York.

To have new adventures away from sad memories here. I guess I can understand that. Because I could not wait to get away from my home. Where I had been all alone after my parents had passed away.

I knew Jo would be homesick for us as we would be homesick for her as well. But we would write to her as often as we could.

I would be sure to fill her up on what all was going on at home. And she could tell me all about New York. Maybe I could venture out with Aunt Margert to see her there once she was all settled in.

That would be exciting. I knew in time once Laurie cooled off his temper he would be back, and we all would be the best of friends again.

But seeing as Jo turned down his offer of marriage, he was sore. He was going to be for some time. I was hurt myself. I thought he had taken a fancy to me. But I had been wrong upon that.

Jo was the only one in Laurie's heart. Not I. I must move on and get on with my life.

There were plenty of other men out there maybe Meg could introduce me around. Maybe John had some friends I could meet up with.

Someone who had no attachment to Jo. Someone who would only have eyes for me. If there was such a man out there for me. Uncle says we all have soulmates. I was not so sure about that myself.

"Marmee!" Amy calls as she comes into the house. "Where is Marmee?" she asks me when she sees me.

"Out in the garden with Hannah. Why?" I ask.

"I am going to be leaving soon. I wanted to host a party here with my friends I made at home. One last get together. We were school chums. I plan on paying for things myself. I'm hoping for a lunch here tomorrow for my party. But I need to ask Marmee. You see some of the girls loved my artwork and they wanted to come over and paint the river that I had. I told them that would be a fine idea" she rambles on. "I will be staying overseas this time with aunt March now that we got you home. I did not have time for, a party before because she was worried about getting you home. Now that you have gotten here, I still want to have a party"

"I do not see why not if you are planning on paying for it yourself" I point out. She nods.

"I shall miss you when I am away. I will be sure to send you all postcards whenever I can" she promises me. "I shall miss this place. I know it" she sighs as she looks around the home.

"Hello, Miss Amy" greets Hannah as she and my aunt come in the house.

"Amy dear!" says my aunt. They hug. 

"Marmee I wish to ask you of a favor" says Amy. She tells my aunt what she told me. 

"I think that is fine but we could pay for it" offers my aunt.

"No, I want everything a certain way. I shall pay for it" offers Amy sternly. "Do you think Laurie would come to say goodbye to me? I want him at my party" she worries.

"I do not see why not" says my aunt.

"I am not so sure that is a wise idea" I worry.

Jo overheard us speaking. "It is all my fault. Teddy can come if he wishes" she states. "Fiona, may I speak with you privately please" she asks of me.

I nod. I follow her outside while Amy made plans for her going away party. We sit down outside.

"What is on your mind Jo?" I ask.

She folds her hands in her lap as she looks up at the sky. 

"I have no right to go demand that Teddy comes to see off Amy. That is her wish though. I would like for him to attend. We all would. Can I ask a favor of you?" she asks softly.

"You may ask me anything" I say with a nod.

"Could you? Could you go over and invite Teddy over? Tell him everything would be fine. We all want him to come by" she asks softly. "Not for me. But for Amy?" she asks me. "If I ask he would not go we both know it"

She was right. He would turn her offer down in a heartbeat.

I sigh. This was hard. I really did not want to see Laurie again. Not after the mean harsh things he had said to me when I last saw him.

But I knew how important it was to Amy to have him at her party. Amy had done so much for me since my parents had passed away. I had to be there for Amy to. And Jo.

"Alright, I shall go over there" I sigh at last.

"You are swell" she gushes. She gets up and hugs me tightly.

"You owe me Jo March" I tease.

She nods. "Of course I do" she says.

"Wish me luck. I will head over to see him" I tell her.

She salutes me then says "God speed" she teases. We laugh. I feel a bit better.

Then I make my way over to Laurie's home. I knock on the door. His grandfather answers it.

"Why hello Miss March" he greets me warmly. He had kind warm eyes a cheerful smile.

"Hello sir, I come over to formerly request that you and Laurie are invited to go to Amy's going away party tomorrow. She requests you both there. She is heading back to Europe with my aunt. To study art" I explain.

"You wish to talk to the boy?" he jokes. I am blushing.

"Yes please" I add.

"He is in the den with tbe books" he tells me.

"Thank you" I say. I head on my way to see Laurie. Butterflies jumble about in my stomach.

I see Laurie pretending to read a book as he looks out the window. Over where my house was. I wondered if he had saw me outside talking to Jo before I came. 

"Mr. Laurence" I speak up as I hold my hands together.

He jumps when he spots me there. He had dark circles under his eyes. Had he been crying? Over Jo?

"Miss March. I never expected to see you return here" he softly remarks. "not after the things I said"

"I am here on behalf of Amy" I say.

"I see but not on behalf of you then?" he jokes.

"Amy is having a going away party tomorrow. She is leaving for sometime. She wants you to attend. It would mean the world to her if you came. She did not ask me to ask you" I inform him. "everyone would like to see you there"

"Everyone?" he asks. "even you?" His eyes rest on me. I am blushing. I can feel the heat in my cheekbones.

"Everyone" I simply say back.

"Can you accept my apologies for how I behaved before Miss March?" he softly asks me. "I was hurting. And I need not take that out on you"

"I understand Mr. Laurence. I accept your apology" I answer him formerly.

"But we are back to Mr. Laurence now?" he jokes. 

"Laurie" I sigh. 

"That is better" he laughs. I smile at last. He smiles back at me.

"Amy is leaving us. Jo to. Hannah told me. That leaves you and I. And well Meg" he remarks.

"Indeed it does" I agree. I nod.

"That might work out for the best Miss March" he says.

"Only Miss March?" I tease.

"Fiona" he chuckles.

I grin. We smile at one another. 

"Tell Amy I shall be at her party at her request. What time is the party?" he wonders.

"Oh, about noon. Lunch party" I answer.

"Very well grandfather and I will be there" he offers.

I was pleased. He smiles. 

"See you tomorrow. Laurie" I say as I rush out of there. My heart skips a beat. That went well after all.

I rush back home. Laurie was kind after all. I feel a bit better about it all. Jo was waiting for me outside when I get back home.

"What did he say?" she demands to know.

"He said he would be there. For Amy" I add.

"I knew he would not let us down. Our Teddy never does" brags Jo as she smiles brightly.

Our Teddy? Or her Teddy. My heart sinks. I had to remember Jo had been his friend first. They were best friends. I was nothing to Laurie. Nothing more nothing less.

"What did I say?" worries Jo.

I shake my head. "Nothing at all. Let's go tell Amy the good news about Laurie"

She laughs then nods. She follows me into the house. The party was going to be very fun. Maybe I could talk to Meg about helping me find a suitor.

I would be the next March girl to marry off. Before Jo or Amy did. I had to start courting if I wanted to be married off. Then I could get my money and help the March's as I planned to.
