Chapter 4~Meg's Wedding Day

I was becoming quite the homebody. But today, was Meg's wedding to John Brooke. Today was a most special day. Everyone was in such a good mood. Everyone but Jo it seemed.

I wondered why Jo was so down on such a happy occasion. I had to talk with her alone. She had helped me so much since I came here. I felt the need to reach out to dear Jo.

Jo was standing alone while us girls were fawning over Meg. And her lovely wedding dress. Meg was wearing her Marmee's dress. She looked radiant. I hoped one day that I could get married to.

To some wonderful man who loved me for myself. Meg was beautiful with her glowing smile. Her happy bright eyes. She was going to make the most beautiful bride that this town had ever had.

"Jo can you tie this ribbon in the back?" Meg asks her sister.

"Do it yourself. I need some fresh air for a moment" mutters a very grumpy Jo. She rushes out of there. My heart goes out to her.

I follow after Jo.

"Jo! Wait for me" I call out to her.

She waits for me.

"Do not bother lecturing me. Marmee already has. I will be nice during the wedding. But I won't be happy about it. I never shall. Nothing, will ever be the same again. Beth should be here with us all to celebrate. She always wanted to meet you. She loved getting postcards from you. And she always knew Meg was going to be the first one of us girls to get married off. Why do things have to always change? I loved them as they were. My sisters and I" she bitterly says softly.

I get why she was upset. It was not about the wedding. More about Beth not being here with us.

"How far is Beth's grave? I never have met her properly. The wedding doesn't start for another hour" I offer. "I can walk with you to it"

"You would like to meet Beth?" she asks.

I nod. "I never got to meet her. She always sent me lovely letters back. I hoped to meet all of you. I was deeply saddened when I heard she passed" I tell Jo.

"Beth is not far away" says Jo. "we do have time to spare to go see her. Come on" says Jo.

We begin to take a little jog. And we go to a little grave over beside the church there in town. Jo leads me to Beth.

I see Beth's photo on the grave in a little bubble. Her name on it. It read "Beloved daughter, sister, friend to all whom knew her" then there was a poem written by me under it.

"Marmee loved your poems. She found it in Beth's trunk. Beth had saved all your letters" brags Jo as she touches the grave. "Beth the wedding is today. I know you will be there with us all. I wish you could play the wedding march for Meg" sighs Jo. "Here is Fiona. She came to see you at last"

"Hello, dear Beth. Sorry I am so late" I softly add. "Pleasure to meet you. Not in the way I hoped to" I say as I touch her grave to. "Beautiful stone. I am glad aunt Margret loved the poem" I say.

"It described Beth perfectly" says Jo. "We better head back to the wedding or we shall be late" she worries. I nod then we walk back to the house. We go inside.

"Where have the two of you been?" Amy wonders.

"We went to see Beth. I miss her. I think of her often today" Jo softly says.

Amy looks somber and nods. "I miss her to" then she hugs Jo.

"Where have you been?" Meg demands to know.

"To see Beth. I wanted to meet her" I speak up. That was partly true.

"I miss her so much" sighs Meg. "I wish she was here with me today"

"She is. Oh she is" promises Jo as she hugs Meg.

They are all hugging. Then they get me in a hug. And soon it was time for the wedding. Uncle was marrying them off. Jo had Laurie be escorting me down the aisle to the seats.

He looked so handsome all dressed up. Everyone looked wonderful. I hoped my dress was not as fancy as Meg's dress. John only had eyes for Meg as she came to be at his side. After they wed we all joined hands and sang songs to them. To bless them.

Jo was pouting. Meg was laughing. Laurie was trying to make Jo laugh by making faces at her. I laughed at him and her both.

Even aunt March watched on singing and clapping her hands with delight. Then we have a feast. I notice that Laurie had walked off somewhere with Jo.

"Where did Laurie go?" asks Amy.

"He went on a walk with Jo" I tell her.

"Do you think there is something going on with the two of them?" she speculated.

"Jo claims there is nothing there" I say.

"But she is very close to him. Laurie is the only boy that ever got close to her" Amy warns me. "They are best friends"

Best friends. Why did those words bother me? Was it because I wanted to be closer to Laurie? His smile that was so handsome flashes in my mind. I hoped there was nothing more than friendship going on with the two of them.

I had not met many men here in town yet. But grew really found of Laurie. I should not keep my hopes in that he would notice me. He seemed to have noticed Jo already.

"What? Do you like our Laurie?" teases Amy. She grins at me.

"No" I lie as I blush.

"Oh, you do prefer our Laurie. He is wonderful" jokes Amy. Now my face is red. After the wedding dinner Meg headed to her new home with John.

"Where is Jo?" I wonder.

"Did she come back yet?" my aunt asks me.

"I am not sure sorry" I say.

Suddenly Jo comes bursting in the room. Slamming the door behind her. Then rushing up the stairs. Amy had left with aunt March. My aunt and I head upstairs to go talk to Jo. I wondered what could be wrong with her.

"Jo what is it?" asks my aunt.

"Marmee what is wrong with me? I am awkward! I say the wrong things" she wails. She is crying.

"Calm down. What happened?" she asks.

"Teddy asked me to marry him. And I refused him" she softly says with tears running down her face.

I gasp. He did like her. He loved her. He asked her to marry him. My heart sinks.

I was nothing to Laurie. I hide my pain inside. I could brush it away. I had not known him long anyway.

"You can go over there and beg for him back" I say.

"No, I am not good enough. I am not the type to bash around London with him. I am not the type to sit by and let a man lead. I am not the type to marry off" she sighs. "why can't things stay as they are?" she cries as my aunt hugs her.

"Jo, my dear Jo, you are wonderful and exceptional. There is nothing dull about you! You can't stay the same because everyone changes. We long for the ones we lose but life is wonderful. We can't stay in our past" she is telling her. "you need a change. Maybe you could stay in New York with my friend Kitty. She is a school friend. We visited her when you were a child. Beth came with us remember her?" says my aunt.

"Oh yes, I loved New York" says Jo.

"You could help her with her school kids. Get free room and board. You could write and see publishers there. Oh, Jo it would be perfect for you" adds my aunt.

"How exciting. New York!" I say. I glance over the window. I hear music playing loudly.

"That is Teddy. In pain. I have to go somewhere. I can't stay here" wails Jo.

I nod. I head out of there to let them keep talking. I head over to see Laurie. We were friends after all. I knock on the door. His grandfather let's me in. I go to the room in a den where he was playing.

He looks up to see me. He had been crying.

•✿︎︎•

"Laurie are you okay?" I softly ask as our eyes meet.

"I need no one's pity" he bitterly remarks.

"I am here to offer only my friendship, not offer you any pity of any sort!" I state. "I thought you can use one. A friend"

He gets up. "So we can be close friends? To make me fall for you? Then you too can break my heart? I bet you would like the chance to do that as well" he bitterly remarks as he comes over to me.

My heart races with anger.

"Forget it. I have enough friends with all of the March sisters." I snap with anger.

He grabs my hand to stop me from leaving. My heart races in my chest. His eyes were on mine.

I remove my hand from his.

"Don't touch me. Or talk to me until you wish to act normally and treat me as a friend would another friend. Goodbye, Mr. Laurence" I snap as I walk out of there.

I leave as fast as I can. Then go up to the attic. Feeling so angered. By Jo wanting to leave me already. And Laurie thinking all women were out to hurt him. I brush the bitter tears back.

Then I get to writing poems again. Everyone in my life always left me. I did not know why now I though things would be any different. Everyone left. I was the only person I could count on. I needed to seek a job. Then get my own place. And move from here. To be alone.

I did my best on my own. I was the only person I could count on.
