Chapter 17 ➼︎Books
Chapter 17, Books
I had never been so happy before. I had my family. My sweet handsome Laurie. I was going to have a family. One that I always had dreamed of. I was so blessed indeed.
I wondered how soon Laurie wanted to get married. That was going to be something that we had to discuss alone. I had to write to Amy right away and tell her the good news about the engagement.
I knew Aunt March would not like the fact that I was going to wed Laurie, the boy next door. She would think I could do better.
But no one was better for me than he was. Jo comes up the stairs as I am writing a letter to Amy about how happy I was. Jo looked down in the dumps. She had a book in her hands as she normally did. She sits on the couch there and pouts.

"Jo what is wrong?" I ask.
"I never heard back from the Professor. I did as you said and I sent him the book I wrote called My Beth. But I guess he hated it. I can't ever do anything right. Please do not tell anyone that I told you this. But I miss him a great deal. I think he hates me" Jo mutters as tears come to her eyes.
I sat down beside her.
"I am sure he does not hate you Jo" I tell her. "mail takes time. I am sure he will write you back"
"Doubtful" sighs Jo. She brushes tears back with her hand. "can I tell you a secret?"
"You know you can tell me anything" I reminded her.
"Back in New York he took me to plays. And I loved it. We had so much fun together. We even kissed. I thought we were serious about each other. That he might ask me for a courtship" Jo says. "like Laurie did for you. But it was not meant to be"
"Wow you kissed him back?" I gush. She never told me that!
"It is over with. I will move on I suppose. He moved on" she mutters. "I just feel so sad"
I hugged her.
"You miss Beth, and you lost him. You have a great deal to be sad about" I point out.
"Thank you" she sighs.
"I bet you will write the best book out there and make millions on it wait and see" I say to her. "Jo you are a wonderful writer. I read that book. I could not put it down" I remind her.
"You make me feel better" sighs Jo.
"I am always here for you" I tell her.
I meant that to.
And I knew she was always going to be there for me as well.

"Fiona! Laurie is here to see you" calls out Marmee.
"Be right down" I tell her.
"Are you going to be okay Jo?" I ask. "I can stay if you need me to be"
"Go ahead and go. I will be fine. Nothing a good book can't cure" says Jo with a sad smile.
I hug her once more than head down to see Laurie.
I rush down the stairs to see Laurie waiting for me. He looked like he was in a good mood as I was today. I hug him hello. Marmee leaves us alone. I stand there holding onto him for a bit. I felt sad Jo lost her love. But I had mine.
"Hello, my sweetheart" Laurie greets me.
"I am glad to see you" I say.
He smiles.
"Why are you by what is going on?" I wonder.
"We have much to talk about. Can you come over?" he asks me.
"Certainly" I answer.
"Great follow me" he says as he offers me his arm to take.
We walk on over to his grandfather's place. I wondered what we had to talk about. Maybe he was wanting to talk about the wedding date!
That had to be it! Excitement fills my heart to think of planning a day for us. I smiled at him. He smiles at me.

"Come upstairs with me" he says.
"But we should not be alone before the wedding" I worry.
"Nonsense dear girl. Everyone is working around here. It is busy. We will not be alone" he promises me. I go following him up the long staircase. And we stopped at a large, beautiful bedroom. They were getting ready to do work to the bedroom it looked like.
"This here is my room. It has a private bathroom too. And a large place to read over there." he shows me.
"This room is so beautiful" I gush.
"This is the thing. This room is going to be our room. Your room as well Fiona" he softly tells me as I feel my cheeks blush at the thought.
"Right" I say with a nod.
"I want you to pick a color. And this room will be whatever you want it to be" he says to me. "Blue anything you want. Purple even. I want you to feel at home here" he says.
"Laurie" I gush with joy. I felt touched.
I held him closer. I lean up kissing him.
"You think of everything. You are so sweet and kind to me" I praise him.
"I keep thinking about married life. Waking up next to you. And you being here in my room" he admits. I noticed my glove over on his dresser there.
"Oh, sorry I have had that" he shamefully admits. He goes to hand it back. I place it back in his hands.
"It belongs to you" I softly say. He grins then puts it back on the dresser.
"I would like a light ocean blue room. For both of us. Blue is a calm and cool color" I say as I look around the room.
"I shall love that" he agrees.
We lay on the bed. Resting there. I smile thinking of our wedding night. What it would be like to spend the night with him.
He leans on his side looking over at me. We kiss. Then the kisses grow faster. I had to slow down or we would have nothing to wait for on our wedding night.

"Laurie we better stop or I won't be able to" I softly say after a long slow wonderful kiss.
"I know sweetheart" he answers.
"Theo!" I giggle.
"I like it when you call me Theo. I do not like it when everyone does but you I like it" he chuckles.
"My Theo" I softly say.
He kisses me.
"There you are! Oh my! Teddy! Fiona! I have big news!" Jo exclaims as she rushes in our room.
"Kill joy" laughs Laurie.
"Did I interrupt something?" worries Jo.
"No, it is good you did what is going on?" I ask her.
"I got a letter! They are going to publish My Beth! But they are changing the title to Little Women!" exclaims Jo. "they loved it!"
"Oh JO! That is wonderful!" I exclaim. Laurie and I hug her.
"Congratulations Jo" says Laurie.
"Thank you, Teddy," says Jo.
"Any news on your Professor?" I ask her.
She shakes her head.
"No not a word from him" she mutters.
"But your book that is grand" I remind her.
"We shall celebrate tonight" Laurie tells her. "I shall have the cook make us a feast and we can celebrate over here" says Laurie.
"Thank you, Teddy and Fiona," says Jo gratefully.
I was happy about her book. But I hoped her true love would find his way to her soon.
Jo seemed so lonely it made my heart ache for her inside. I knew what it was like to feel that way. And even Jo deserved a happy ending.
