Chapter 16, Trains

I sit there with my hands in my lap. My heart was racing a mile a min. My tears kept wanting to fall. Soon the half hour was speeding by. I wondered if anyone noticed I had yet to return back home.

If they wondered about me? I doubted it. I knew everyone was busy packing my things up. I grabbed my handkerchief and dry some tears that escaped my eyes.

I really did not want to leave. But I could not stand in the way of Jo's love for Laurie or his for her. And if I stayed then I was truly only going to be in the way. I could not stay. I did not belong here.

This was no longer my home. I had to let it go. I would write a goodbye letter to Laurie once I was home. That was the least I owed him after all we had been through and what he meant to me.

But I was never going to tell him I loved him and that my heart was breaking.

"There you are! You are not going anywhere Fiona March!" I hear someone yelling at the top of his lungs.

"Laurie?!" I gasp. I sit up and turn around. I see Laurie there. Rushing as fast as he could to reach me.

Then without warning he tackles me into a hug.

"Thank god! Thank god I made it here in time! Thank god" he cries. He holds onto me. "you are not getting on that train! You are not leaving us" he declares. "I will hold onto you until it leaves" he promises me.

"How? How did you know I was here?" I stammer as he held me tightly. I wrap my arms around him.

"Your letter! Jo found it and I rushed right here and I ran and ran as fast as I could" he gasps. He sounded out of breath.

Like he was in tears to.

"You have to let me go Laurie. I know that you plan to ask Jo to wed you. I am happy for you but I need space and I cannot stay here" I tell him.

"Stupid girl!" he groans.

He pulls apart. Then kisses me. The best kiss of my life. I return his passionate firy kiss.

"I was asking uncle for you're hand in marriage! Not Jo's!" he declares after the kiss. Then he kisses me once more.

"Me? " I stammer.

"You!" he states. "I don't want Jo! I do not love Jo! I love you Fiona March! You keep pushing me away. I won't let you anymore"

"You love me? You want to marry me?" I stammer as happy tears come to me.

He kneels before me. Just as he does get a ring out for me the train whistle blows and leaves.

"Fiona March....will you...."

Train whistles louder.

We both laugh.

"Fiona March will you marry me?" he asks me. "do the honor of being my wife?" he demands as he slides a ring on my finger.

"YES!" I go to say but the last whistle blows and no one can hear what I say.

We laugh more. I nod yes.
He twirls me around in his arms.

"I love you and I have been in love with you when you pushed me away it broke my heart. I gave you time because I knew you were scared of getting hurt" he says to me. "I will never break your heart, you nearly broke mine today when we found that letter, I was going to ask you before you left today and then we could not find you" he says to me.

I touch his face with my hand.

"I am sorry for scaring you Laurie" I tell him.

"Thank god you left that note" he answers.

He holds me again. I hold him.

"I was scared I was going to lose you" I admit as tears come to me.

"I never asked any woman to court. Yes, I asked Jo to marry me once. But I never have been more serious about anyone as I am you. And I know why it did not work out with Jo. Because I am meant for you Fiona March. And you are mine" he declares. "you are mine"

We stand there in the station holding one another. My hand is in his soft hair. Our cheeks pressed against each other.

Not caring who was looking at us. He asked me to be his wife. We were going to get married. He got me a ring!

Not Jo!!

"I love you Laurie" I softly say to him.

"That is the first time you admitted that" he chuckles. "it is about time"

He pulls back and kisses me.

"You found here! Thank heavens" says Jo as she makes her way to our side. "do not ever scare us like that again!" she says as she slaps me on the arm.

"I found her in time" Laurie tells Jo.

"She said yes!" exclaims Jo.

She spots my ring.

"I said yes" I giggle with joy. We all hug.

"Let's get our girl home" demands Jo.

"Yes" says Laurie. "we need to stop by and tell grandfather the good news" he says to me. He kisses me on the forehead.

"Yes" I agree with him.

We walk home talking with joyful plans.

"Are you moving out now" Jo asks me.

"Do you think Meg will mind if I do not?" I worry.

"I think she will understand" says Jo.

We get back home.

"They found her!" Hannah exclaims. "She is safe!"

Everyone comes to hug me.

"Do not scare us like that again child" warns Marmee.

"Never" I laugh.

"She said yes!" Laurie announces as he holds my hand up so they could see the ring.

They cheer.

"Meg is it alright if I stay?" I ask.

"Sure is. I had a feeling you would be back" she laughs. She hugs me.

"We need to go tell grandfather the news. We will be back" says Laurie to everyone.

Laurie leads me over to his place. His grandfather was reading and enjoying coffee.

"What is going on?" he wonders.

"Grandfather, I have wonderful news" Laurie tells him.

I am at his side.

"The courtship is back on! How fantastic" says his grandfather.

"Better than that" I giggle as I hold my hand out so he could see the ring.

"Congratulations!" he exclaims to us. He hugs us both. "welcome to the family young lady"

"Thank you, sir," I answer.

After we talk we go sit together in the garden alone.

"I don't know what I might have done if you got on the train. I would have chased after you" Laurie softly admits to me.

"You would have?" I ask.

He nods. "I need you Fiona"

"I need you to. I could not bare to see you with Jo" I tell him as tears come.

"You never would have. I love you" he reminds me.

He shows me with a kiss.
And my heart was happy.
