The Soldier
You leaned against the wall and watched as Darius looked at Jinx. His arms were crossed and Jinx was standing at attention.
You had been apart of the Joint Unit for nearly a month now. You and Ezreal were surpised when Darius called upon you both by name.
You were even more surpsied by the team itself.
A person from every region, fighting under the same banner. You served no leader, but the people. It was a fool's dream, but it seemed to work. And now, you had seven members.
That is, if Darius accepts Jinx.
Darius: I heard that you like to cause trouble.
Jinx looked at you but you never mentioned that.
Darius: And that you have a fondness of explosives.
Jinx didn't answer. Darius placed a hand on her shoulder and smiled.
Darius: You speak freely here.
Jinx: You sure?
Darius nodded.
Jinx: Cool.
She then turned to you.
Jinx: Thanks for throwing me under the bus, jackass.
You raised your hands while the others laughed. Even Darius smiled at her comment.
Darius: That would be your superior back at Zaun, who informed me of your actions.
Jinx: Well, he's a jackass too.
Darius nodded.
Darius: He is. So, how would you like to serve under me instead?
And thus, you gained the final member of your motley crew.
Y/N- Ionia
Jinx - Zaun
Darius- Noxus
Graves- Bilgewater
Garen- Demacia
Pantheon- Targon
Ezreal- Piltover
Rell- Noxus
Though you were still a rookie fresh out of boot camp, you, Ezreal, and Jinx were treated as equals in almost every aspect. Darius trusted you with important tasks and duties like everyone else.
By the first week, you knew everyone and where they came from.
By the second, you were drinking with them.
By the third, you were family.
You still recalled your first mission.
It was in Shurima. You never thought you would end up here, not in a million years, much less met the ruler.
Azir: Darius. Old friend.
You stopped walking once Darius smiled and shook the emperor's hand. You looked at this interaction confused before you looked down at yourself. You were in your gear with your rifle I your hands.
Jinx: So, what's he doing here? I figure royalty hated us.
Rell: Some. Azir fights alongside his men. It's part of the reason why his people love him as much as they do. Though, he's not exactly popular among the other rulers.
Ezreal: So, why are we here?
Pantheon: We do the jobs no one else can.
Jinx: Dope. So, we're like mercenaries?
Y/N: Mercenaries get paid for jobs.
Rell: No. We aren't mercenaries.
The mission was a simple one. There had been some rebels setting up camp. Under the leadership of Renekton.
Azir learned that he had gone off elsewhere and the camp was valuable.
It was just supposed to be a recon mission. Nothing too wild.
But, you quickly learned that things were never easy with this group.
Y/N: How many are there?!
Garen: Doesn't matter! They all go down the same!
He peeked over his cover and opened fire at the rebels where were shooting up hill. There were only 19 of yo.....
BANG!
18 of you on the hill and about 200
BANG BANG!
198 Rebels down below.
Jinx pulled out one of her homemade pipe bombs and looked at you with a massive smile.
Y/N: Throw it!
Jinx nodded at the order and threw it down the hill. It erupted, taking out five rebels.
You fired down but quickly found yourself out of ammo. You ducked back behind cover and groaned.
Y/N: I'm out!
You were then hit on the arm by a magazine. You looked over and found Graves standing straight up mowing down the enemy.
You just shrugged and reloaded before you continued to fight.
It was three hours after the initial attack that you were finally able to breathe.
You sat against a rock with your helmet off and your rifle resting beside you. You were covered in dirt and rock as was everyone else.
Rell: You look tired.
You looked up at Darius' second and command. She held a canteen out towards you which you hesitated to take.
Rell: Drink. Once we make it back to the palace, we'll have more water to go around.
She smiled as you took the canteen. You took a sip, the cool water feeling like heaven in your dry throat, as she sat next to you.
Rell: You did good, kid. Not bad for your first time.
You just nodded as you handed the canteen back to her. She took a drink and looked over her shoulder at the royal army checking for any survivors.
Rell: So, what do you think?
You gave it some thought before you smiled.
Y/N: I think this is where I belong.
You both smiled at each other.
Your career with the joint unit was a busy one. It seemed like you had a mission every other day. Even when you had days in between missions, you still felt like you were doing something.
Ezreal: Heads up!
You caught the football he threw at you before you threw it back.
Playing catch on a battle ship? You can check that off your bucket list. Ezreal threw the ball back at you, but someone else caught it.
Jinx: Alright, lover boys. Stop playing catch. Captain wants to talk to Y/N.
You sighed and traded places with Jinx. You headed inside and towards the office the crew had set up for the captain. You had only seen it once when you got here. You'd really only been to your room, the deck, or wherever the sailers were.
You entered the room and found Darius with Rell looking over some files in preparation for the upcoming mission.
Y/N: Sir.
Darius: There you are. Good.
He looked up from the files and signaled for you to approach the table. You nodded and walked over where you saw the files.
Y/N: Jinx said you wanted to see me?
Darius: Yes. Have I ever told you that you surpise me? After two years, you still surpise me.
Y/N: Uh, no, sir. You haven't?
Darius: Well, you do. You, like everyone else, have shown nothing but loyalty to your duties as a soldier. However, you also showed me that you know how to take command when the situation calls for it.
You raised a brow confused before Darius walked around the table. He placed a hand on your shoulder.
Darius: How would you like to become my third in command?
Your eyes went wide before you looked of to Rell. She just smirked as she read the file in her hand.
Y/N: I-I would...love to. That is, if you think I can...
Darius: Handle it? You've shown that you can already.
And just like that, you were giving a position of command. Both other the team, and over anyone else who would join you in missions.
It wasn't until your third year on the team that things changed for you.
You found yourself hitting the ground, hard, before Rell placed her forearm towards your neck. She smirked.
Rell: You lose. Again.
You just smiled.
Y/N: Did I?
You held something against her gut which she felt immediately. She looked down and found the knife you held.
Rell: Not what I was hoping you'd learn, but it's something.
Rell got to her feet and reached a hand out towards you. You took it and she helped you to your feet.
You were in Demacia currently, some kind of terrorist cell causing issues, again, but Darius and Daren were on leave. Of course, that didn't matter since there was no immediate threat to deal with.
Plus, after you had all but saved the city, the people here were grateful enough see you all as heroes.
Rell took a nearby towel which she used to wipe the sweat from her neck and forehead. Everyone else who was here was out exploring the city while you and Rell took the chance to get some more hand to hand training.
Rell: You know, I think I'll count that one as a win.
You laughed.
Y/N: Is this a pity win?
Rell: Maybe. You never win against me before.
You nodded at the fact.
Y/N: Yeah. True. I'll take it.
Rell: Great. Now, as for your reward, you can buy me a drink.
You looked at her unamused.
Y/N: Shouldn't you be buying me a drink?
Rell just laughed as she dissapered into her room.
You both ended up at the bar that was closest to your temporary base. One drink turned into two. Two to three. Three to....honestly, you couldn't remember.
Rell: I like it when you drink. Your accent starts to come out more.
Y/N: No it doesn't.
Rell: It does!
You both sat at the bar with your ??? drink of the night as you both laughed at each other. Like she said, your accent was mostly present in your speech as you told her jokes and stories.
Ever since Darius made you third captain, you and Rell had started spending more time together. Of course Jinx made her comments and Ezreal always had something to say, but you just learned to brush it off.
Rell: You know, out of everyone on the team, you might be the one person who can hold a normal conversation.
Y/N: Well, I have moments too.
Rell nodded.
Rell: I know. I remember what happened back at the Isles.
The mood seemed to change at the mention of that awful place. You just quietly laughed.
Y/N: Yeah.
Rell: Can I ask, what exactly happened?
You took a drink and stayed quiet.
Y/N: Maybe another time. Let's just enjoy ourselves tonight.
Rell nodded before she finished her drink.
Rell: I agree.
She then turned to you.
Rell: I want to sleep with you.
You nearly choked on your drink. Rell watched as you coughed before you turned to her.
Y/N: W-What?
Rell: Y/N, let's be honest here. Maybe it's the alcohol, or maybe it's because we've been dancing around each other, but I think it's time to talk.
She placed a hand on your knee as she looked you in the eyes.
Rell: You're a good man. You're honest and you value life. I saw what you did for that girl back during the attack.
Y/N: Rell...
Rell: Don't down play it. You know I'm right.
Y/N: And you want to sleep with me because you think I'm a good guy?
Rell: Among other things, yes. But also because we have sexual tension which has been bugging me for months now.
You rolled your eyes. Like it was going to be that easy.
-----------
Rell: Wow.
Y/N: Yeah.
It was that easy!
Rell laid on side of the bed while you laid next to her. You both looked at the roof as you thought about what had just transpired.
Y/N: Well....that was...
Rell: Wanna go again?
Y/N: Yes.
It wouldn't be for a few more weeks that you and Rell finally talked about that night. Though it wasn't frown upon or not allowed, the two of you kept your relationship a secret to the others.
About a year later, your fourth year serving, you went with Rell back to Noxus on leave. You had tagged along with others before when they went back home, but never Rell.
Rell: You okay? You look nervous.
You shrugged as you walked with her down the street. It was the fall so you both wore coats. The trees were now orange with dying leaves, making the neighborhood seem more colorful.
Y/N: Yeah. Just...never met my girlfriend's parents before.
Rell just smiled as she locked her arm with yours.
Rell: They'll love you. Just be yourself.
Y/N: You want them to love me or for me to be myself?
Rell rolled her eyes as you smiled.
You never went home during leave. You never spoke to your family. Never went to visit your father or your sister. You either stayed in the closest town, city, or village or you went with someone back to their home.
Everyone seemed to welcome you with open arms. Like you were their own child.
And Rell's family was no exception.
They fell in love with you within the first five minutes. You shared a drink with her father and her mother practically begged you to stay the night instead of getting a hotel room.
Rell's room was not what you were expecting.
Y/N: It's pink.
You looked around her childhood room. The walls were all painted pink and she had various trophies for horse riding on a shelf. Her bed even looked cute.
Rell: I am a girl. I grew up girly.
Y/N: So, what happened? Your pony die?
Rell playfully shoved you as you teased her. In truth, she would have rare moments where you found her acting more girly than she let on. Mostly when it was just the two of you.
But you didn't care. It never mattered to you. You loved her. More than you could ever admit outloud.
That's why you proposed. That's why she said yes.
You had one more mission before you all went to Piltover for Ezreal's wedding. Then, a week after, to Noxus for yours and Rell.
Instead you found yourself in a hospital bed, your arm bandaged all the way from your wrist to your elbow. Patches covering your chest from where you got shot.
Jinx was the first one you saw when you woke up. Her right eye was covered and her arm was in an arm slang. Even part of her hair was shaved so that they could bandage her head wound.
You remembered what happened.
How you were ambushed. How the bomb went off, sending you and Ezreal to the ground.
You stood up, looking around for your team. For the enemy. For anyone.
But when someone did appear, from the dust still in the air, he shot you.
Everyone fought. Everyone.
And they died.
Every last one of them except for you and Jinx.
You couldn't even attend their funerals. You were stuck in the hospital.
It wouldn't be for another month before you and Jinx were able to go and pay your respects.
The last one you saw, was Rell.
You stood in the cemetery and stared at the tombstone. A bouquet of daisies in your hand.
Her favorite.
All you could say, just wasn't enough.
Y/N: I finally got the rings. Sorry it took so long.
When her parents showed up, they only found the flowers.
You slowly opened your eyes to the sound of beeping. You heard the people out in the hall while Jinx hummed to herself. You looked over and saw that she was reading a magazine. Next to her was Ahri who was asleep.
Eve: They didn't have banana, so you get a vanilla pudding.
You looked over and found Eve with Kai'sa and Akali walking in. Eve held two pudding cups, Kai'sa's held one, and Akali had her arms full.
Jinx: Vanilla works.
Eve handed her the white pudding and took a seat. Akali sat next to Kai'sa on the otherside as you looked at them.
Jinx happened to look up and saw that your eyes were open.
Jinx: Y/N?
The girls all looked up as you looked around the room.
Darius.
Garen.
Graves.
Pantheon.
Ezreal.
Rell.
They were all gone.
Yet, you didn't feel so alone anymore.
You had a new family. One that you weren't going to fail.
Y/N: Hey.
Rell: Hey.
You and Rell smiled at each other as you handed her a plate of food you had made. You both sat on the bed and ate. Just enjoying the morning.
You didn't have breakfast. You had a pudding cup.
And you didn't have Rell.
But maybe you could move on after all.
