The Old Friends
You took a deep breath and slammed the ax down onto the wood. The log split apart without much effort.
Maria: Do it again!
You just chuckled as Maria dragged another piece of wood towards you. You picked it up from her and looked at it.
Y/N: I think we chopped enough wood for now, don't you?
Maria: Another! It's do cool!
You looked at her then at the log. You suddenly got an idea.
Y/N: What if I split this apart with my hands? Would that be cool enough to call it a day?
Maria's eyes went wide.
Maria: Can you?!
You looked at the log and thought about it.
Y/N: Maybe.
You grabbed the log with two hands and took a deep breath. You then began to pull the wood. Eventually it cracked and you split it apart.
You held the two pieces of wood and showed them to your niece who looked at you like you were the coolest person in the whole world.
Maria: THAT'S SO AWESOME!
You couldn't help but smile at the girl's excitement. You tossed the two pieces of wood over into the pile as you sister stepped out onto the front porch.
Elizabeth: Finally found you two.
You turned around and gave her a wave.
Y/N: Yep. She came and woke me up earlier. The sun was up, so Maria was up, and now I'm up.
Elizabeth: Of course.
She walked over to the two of you. She was already dressed in some jeans and a shirt which was tucked in. She had a thin blanket over her shoulders.
You laughed a bit to yourself.
Elizabeth: What's so funny?
You just shook your head.
Y/N: I just...never really thought we would be dressed like this again.
Elizabeth looked down at your outfit. You had on a F/C button upp tucked into your jeans and even some of your dad's old boots.
Elizabeth: All you're missing now is a hat.
You reached behind your back and pulled out an old trucker hat which you had stuffed into your back pocket. You unfolded it and pulled it on.
Elizabeth: There it is.
You both shared a smile before Maria walked over.
Maria: Mom! Uncle Y/N split a wood in half!
Elizabeth: Did he, now? Well, your uncle is very strong. Just like daddy is.
Maria: Uh huh!
Just don't go expecting an arm wrestling match, kiddo. You brushed your hands off by dusting them together. You felt your phone go off, but you didn't really bother to check it.
You didn't need more to worry about right now. And if it was something serious, Jinx knew to call your sister.
Elizabeth: So, what are your plans for today?
You shrugged.
Y/N: I'm gonna help around the house. After that, I'm gonna head into town. Say hi to some old friends.
Elizabeth: Good. You shouldn't spend all your time coped up in here.
She sighed before she placed a hand on your shoulder.
Elizabeth: Thank you for coming. I know you had a lot going on and....
Y/N: It's fine. I need to be here. Besides, Jinx has it handled.
--------------
Jinx: Why are there so many of you?!
Ahri: It's only the four of us!
Akali: Has anyone seen my shirt?
Eve: My phone has been blowing up all morning because my manager, you, hasn't been answering any messages.
Kai'sa: Is anyone going to eat?
Jinx: GaahhhhhhhhhHHHHHHHH!!!
Totoro: <Meow>
--------------
Elizabeth: I'm sure she has it handled.
Hopefully she did.
--------------
You hopped out of the old truck your dad had fixed up a while back. You were now in town which was actually smaller than you thought. Still bigger than when you grew up, but not quote big enough.
You nodded to a passerby who smiled at you. You then looked up at the white church in front of you.
Y/N: So, this is where it's all been leading me. Fuck.
You sighed and walked up the steps. You entered the holy place and looked around for a moment before you heard someone walking out of the back. You stood there for a moment as a man walked out. He stopped when he saw you.
???: Oh. Hello. Good afternoon. Can I help you?
You smiled a bit.
Y/N: Come on. It hasn't been that long, Jhin.
Jhin looked at you for a moment before he smiled. You both laughed as he walked through the aisle before he hugged you.
Jhin: Y/N! Old friend. It's has been too long.
You hugged him back.
Y/N: Yeah, I guess it has been that long.
You both let go and you looked at him from head to toe.
Y/N: Wow. Never thought any of us would ever become a priest.
Jhin looked down at his outfit and chuckled.
Jhin: Yes. After Father John passed away, they needed someone to take over. So, I stepped up.
You nodded.
Y/N: Nice. Are, uh, are you still painting?
Jhin nodded and pointed over behind you. You turned around and noticed that there was a painting hanging over the door.
Jhin: It would be a disrespect not to. Especially after your mother spent all that time teaching me.
The painting was one of your mother's. It was of a dove flying up into the sky.
Y/N: Wow.
Jhin: So, what are you doing back here? I was under the impression that you were on tour with that new group.
You nodded as you placed your hands into your pockets.
Y/N: Yeah.
Jhin noticed the tone of your voice. He placed a hand on your back and lead you to one of the benches. You both sat down and you sighed.
Jhin: You can speak freely here. What's bothering you?
You rubbed your hands together.
Y/N: My dad is sick. He was diagnosed with cancer.
Jhin: Oh, no. I'm so sorry.
Y/N: I just.....I felt like I needed to come back. Just for now.
Jhin nodded.
Jhin: I believe you made the right choice. And, I won't go on any rant about how God works in mysterious ways or anything like that.
Y/N: Actually...
Jhin looked at you.
Y/N: Could you tell me something? Anything?
Jhin watched as you sat up and took a deep breath.
Y/N: A lot of stuff has happened since I left, Jhin. A lot. I've sinned so much and I'm not looking for any forgiveness from the lord. But, I could use a friend right now.
Jhin smiled.
Jhin: Of course. Tell me what you need to. I'll be here.
You smiled, and then you told him.
-----------------
You stepped into the bar and looked around. You never actually got to go in this place before. It looked like any old country bar. Minus the assholes.
You walked over to the bar and took a seat before you ordered a beer. Jhin said he would join you but you had also called up another friend.
Kayn: There he is.
You turned around as Kayn entered the bar. He held out his arms with a huge smile and you got back up.
Y/N: Get a hair cut, you hippie.
Kayn: Eat me.
You both hugged as he laughed.
Kayn: Oh man. You look like shit.
Y/N: Likewise. Want a drink?
Kayn followed you back to the bar and took a seat.
Kayn: Ah, man. How have you been? I mean, Jinx has kinda been keeping us updated but, clearly you've been up to some shit.
He pointed at your head and you nodded.
Y/N: Bar fight. Ah, someone was giving Ahri a hard time for being a faunas.
Kayn: Damn. I remember a time where you refused to fight. Then you went and joined the army.
Y/N: Yep. Things have been crazy. I'm, ah, sorry that I never called or text as much as Jinx did.
Kayn: Ah, don't even worry about it. Work at the Dairy Farm has been crazy the last few years. Gotta stay in business, right?
You chuckled.
Y/N: Right. But there's still no excuse for it.
Kayn slapped your back with a loud laugh.
Kayn: Don't worry, dude! I get it. I do. I'm just glad you haven't forgotten us after becoming Mr. Manager Man.
You rolled your eyes as you both got your drinks. You nodded in thanks and took a drink.
Kayn: Kinda funny.
You looked at him.
Kayn: I always kinda figured we would be drinking at a bar when we were older. I just never thought it would be under these circumstances. I'm sorry about your dad, man.
Y/N: Thanks.
Kayn: And, uh......dude, I'm sorry bout everything. You know, with your squadron and your fiancée. It's....rough. You know, you didn't deserve any of this.
You slowly nodded.
Kayn: How are you holding up?
Y/N: Barley. But I am. And that's what matters.
Kayn looked at you for a moment before he sighed.
Kayn: Of course you are. You were always stronger than you gave yourself credit for.
You felt your phone go off again, but you decided not to look at it. Probably wasn't important.
-----------
Ahri: Answer your phone!
Akali: Where's my bra?!
Eve: Someone get Y/N on the phone. I'm about to lose it!
Kai'sa: This is madness. All of this.
Jinx: I'm trying my best!
Totoro: <Meow>
-------------
Kayn: Shouldn't you get that?
You just waved it off and took a drink.
Y/N: If it's the girls, Jinx is handling it. And if it's my sister, then she knows where to find me.
Kayn: You really don't care, do you?
Y/N: Nope.
Jhin: A man who doesn't care. Sounds about right.
Jhin sat next to you and you nodded.
Y/N: Yep. So, can you drink or....
Jhin ordered a drink, answering your question, before he turned to you.
Jhin: Well, here we are. Half of the old gang.
Kayn: Shame that Lee Sin couldn't be here with us.
All: Rest in piece.
You all lifted your drinks up and took a drink. RIP Lee Sin. Gone too soon.
Kayn: Well, looks like we have some lost time to catch up on.
Indeed you did.
-----------
It was late by the time you got back to the house. By late, I mean no lights were on save for the porch light. Jhin drove you back but you still stumbled around like a drunk fool.
You ended up just sitting down on the rocking chair to try and gather yourself before you headed inside.
It was good to talk to everyone again. To talk about the good days when there wasn't much worry.
You took a deep breath and looked out at the dark land before you. The moon was full tonight.
You heard a sniff next to you and you looked.
Y/N: Hey. What's wrong?
A younger you looked up at you. He was crying. You noticed the blood on his knee and nodded.
Y/N: Bad fall?
The younger you nodded. You sighed and looked back at the fields.
Y/N: Did you get back up?
Young you nodded.
Y/N: Than that's all that matters.
It was quiet for a moment.
Young Y/N: It hurts.
You looked back at the kid.
Y/N: It normally does. A lot of things hurt.
Young Y/N: Does it stop?
You gave it some thought. You then shook your head.
Y/N: No. It doesn't.
Young Y/N: Then why do you keep doing it?
You just sat there.
Why did you keep doing it?
Y/N: Because I wanna see it through til the end.
You turned back to the younger you.
Y/N: You know something? You're my greatest fear.
Young you just sat there.
Y/N: I'm fucking terrified that one day, I'll end up being you again. A scared kid.
You slowly stood up and sighed.
Y/N: That's why you get up. Otherwise, you'll forget how to.
You walked into the house and turned off the porch light.
