Our Own Niches
Hiccup's POV
Gobber is standing outside the forge, waving us over when we land. "Look who finally decided to show up for work!" he calls out once we've dismounted. I freeze in place. Shoot. I was supposed to come in early today since we have been receiving so many orders on saddles recently. "Come on. Move it. Those saddles can't build themselves. You took control of that job when you didn't like how i did it, so I have no pity for you." he says, tossing Astrid my leather apron. She shoots me a worried look. "Get to work lad." Gobber heads back into the forge to finish hammering in a false tooth for a gronkle.
"Why don't you let me take this one?" I offer, taking the apron from her.
"No,no. I said I wanted to be Hiccup for the day." she cuts in. I sigh, looking up at her determined expression, handing the apron back.
"So, what exactly am I supposed to do?" I ask.
"Well, normally I watch you work, practice in the arena, make sure the others don't get in trouble, hang out with you when your shift is over, and fly Stormfly." I nod, following her in to the forge. She stops, tying the apron around her waist and swiveling her neck.
"What are you looking for?" I ask, smiling.
"Where are the tools and the list?"
I walk over near Gobber and pull out an open box full of tools, picking some up that are strewn around.
"Good afternoon las." Gobber says to me.
"Hey Gobber." I set the box down beside Astrid and sit down to watch.
"You really don't have to stay. Go practice with Toothless or something. I can handle this." Astrid reassures me.
"As you wish. Do you at least know what you're doing?" I urge.
"I guess you could help with the first one." she says, scooting over some.
I lay out a leather sheet over the wooden dragon back I crafted to allow me to get the right shapes and size I want. It would have been nice to have one of these when I made Toothless' first saddle. Back then, I just ad to do guess work. I sketch out the design I want and take it over to the saw to cut it out.
I wish Astrid would just let me do this. I'm worried she wont put the saddles together correctly and, I'll have to go back and fix all of them.
Astrid's POV
I shove Hiccup out of the forge so I can get to making all of these saddles. He protests the whole way out, but I ignore him. I walk back to the saddle pad Hiccup started, staring at it, trying to decide what to do next.
"Stirrups, maybe?" I ask myself.
I search the area for a stack of scrap metal Hiccup uses sometimes to make the stirrups. I bend down once I've spotted it and carry it over to pound it into the shapes I want. I dig through the box of tools looking for a hammer, but come up empty handed. I sigh, and decide to just ask Gobber.
"How is it going lad?" he asks when I walk back over to the metal.
"Well, actually I was going to ask where we keep the hammers." Gobber stops tapping in the false tooth to stand up and look at me. He raises his bushy eyebrows curiously. I stare back, waiting for an answer.
"Hiccup Haddock. You have worked in this forge since you were five. if you don't know where the hammers are by now, Thor help us all." He hands me a hammer off a rack and sends me back to work. "So how are things going with the academy?" he asks, making conversation.
"The usual, I guess. Snotlout is driving me to the ends of the world, the twins keep destroying stuff, and Fishlegs is constantly blabbing about random dragon crap." I say. He nods.
Hiccup's POV
I walk through the middle of town, Toothless beside me. "We need to tell my dad about the body switch problem. I feel like I'm waisting time, dillydallying around all day. normally I'm working, teaching or running errands for Dad." I tell Toothless. He warbles sympathetically, nudging my side as we walk. I play with the long pieces of hair Astrid leaves out of her braid. "I'm just worried we wont be able to reverse it. I mean, I don't remember what island it was, and I'd never seen that type of dragon before."
When we enter the academy, I'm bombarded with questions. "Babe! Your ok!" Snotlout cheers jogging up and throwing an arm around me.
"Yeah," I sigh, giving up on telling him to get off of me.
"How did you escape?" Fishlegs asks. "Did Dagur hurt you? Where's Hiccup?"
"Hiccup-shmiccup. I'm just glad you made it back ok Astrid." Snotlout says leading me over to a bench they have moved in here. I glare at him as I sit down, him beside me. Well, it's nice to know Snotlout would be so utterly disappointed if something terrible were to have happened to me. I can always count on him.
"Guys, I'm too tired and stressed out right now. Hiccup's fine. He's in the forge." I assure them, sliding off the bench and leaning back against it. I suddenly feel completely drained. Maybe the stress is getting to me. i close my eyes and quickly and blissfully, drift off.
Astrid's POV
I stand, slaving over the metal I'm pounding on. I plunge it into the cooling bucket beside me and wipe my brow with my empty hand. Gobber hobbles over to check on me.
"How many have you finished lad?" he asks.
"I'm almost done with my sixth saddle." I say pulling out the metal stirrup and setting it down beside the other.
"Good." He goes over to a wooden wheel that he spins until finding a wooden hand, which he detaches, switching it with his hammer hand. "How are things going with Astrid?" he asks suddenly.
"Oh, um, still going strong after four years."
He nods. "You two seem to be getting closer."
"You have no idea." I say.
"You know, Stoick keeps going around tells the villagers she's his future-daughter-in-law."
I freeze in place. "Oh?"
A loud, rumbling laugh escapes him at my response. I remember like it was yesterday. You were telling me that Astrid wouldn't come near you if she was on fire and you had the only bucket of water in town. Now look at you. You two are constantly joined at the hip. She goes where ever you go in less than a heart beat." I blush at his words, knowing it's completely true. I would follow Hiccup any where. "Guess my advice worked after all" I raise an eyebrow at this comment. "Don't give me that look. My advice always works."
"No offense Gobber, but your advice... your advice is terrible." Wow, I really sounded like Hiccup when I said that, well besides the voice obviously.
He rolls his eyes at me amused. "You kids don't understand good advice. Even if it slapped you across the face." I chuckle at his confidence.
Hiccup's POV
When I wake up, I'm laying down. With my head in someone's lap? I know I was not in this position when I drifted off. i rub some of the sleep out of my eyes allowing my vision to focus more. I recognize the brown boots and pants. My eyes widen in realization, putting two and two together.
"AH, Snotlout!" I shout sitting strait up. "Wha- what are you doing?" I ask bewildered.
"You didn't look comfortable, so I let you use my lap as a pillow." he tells me, trying to make his voice sound soft.
"Um, thanks, I guess." I say rubbing the back of my neck.
"You know..." Snotlout begins looking at his hands, then finally meeting my eyes. "I like this new you. You're not so violent"
"It's a method of communication." I say trying to mock Astrid's voice, but since I already have it, I just sound like a sarcastic and high pitched version of her.
Snotlout laughs lightly. "Hiccup is lucky to have you."
"I know." I say, because it's true. I don't deserve Astrid, and I know that. It's still mind boggling that I'm the one she fell for. I smile to myself, remembering that night in the cove after we found the dragons' nest and she kissed me for the first time. "Snotlout, a girl would be lucky to have you. You just have to find the right one."
I get up and walk over to Toothless, who is curled up against the wall. I meant what I said to Snotlout back there. I'm also hoping it will help him move on from Astrid. Toothless lifts his head when I get closer. I pull Inferno out of one of the saddle bags and go to clean it up. I notice Fishlegs cleaning weapons as well and sit down next to him. "Hey Fishlegs. Still working on those weapons?"
"Well, Hiccup came in and used most of the axes we had just cleaned. So now I'm doing it again."
"Oh."
"What is wrong with him? he is not acting like himself today. Come to think of it... neither have you. It's almost as if you two have switched personalities or something." he tells me, setting aside an axe to begin the next one. leave it to Fishlegs to come the closest to figuring out the truth. "If this is what happens when you get a girlfriend, I don't think I want one."
"Naw, this isn't from being in a relationship." I reassure him.
"How do you know? The rest of us haven't ever been in a relationship like that. Though, it surprises me that the two of you are the ones that are in a relationship. You know, the scrawny outcast-turned-hero and the independent warrior girl?" He does have a point. I never really saw Astrid falling for anyone like she did. Much less with me. I smile, watching him. I glance up quickly to see the twins dragging another bench through the arena.
"Guys, what are you doing?" I call getting their attention.
"Nothing." they answer in unison.
"Well, I know that's not true."
"We are going to train Tiny Snotlout to jump over the benches on Fanghook." Ruff says allowing her brother to do all the work.
"Yeah. It's going to be awesome."
I look to Fishlegs for compliance. He seems unfazed. "Do they do this everyday?"
Fishlegs raises an eyebrow. "You're the one who usually steps in and stops them when Hiccup is off somewhere most afternoons. We get bored."
"Right."
I walk over to the water trough to splash some cool water on my sweaty face. I think I'm going to go help Astrid again because I don't know how much of this I can handle between Snotlout hitting on me, and the twins making messes Fishlegs and I keep having to clean up. I feel bad for her because when I'm not here, they are her priority, being second in command. And I'm gone a lot now, either working in the forge, on the map, or helping Dad. Though I don't do much of the last one. I'm usually gone because of my dad.
I have my back to everyone, so when Snotlout comes up behind me, a small shout escapes my lips. "What are you doing?" he asks, grabbing my left hip.
I spin around to face him. "Wh- why would you do that?" I stutter.
"Ok, I thought about what you said." I raise an eyebrow. "But the right girl for me is the new you."
"Um, I don't think-" I start backing up as he moves closer to me.
"Astrid, there's no denying it. We both know it's true."
I back against a wall.I gulp knowing there's no escape. "Snotlout. I'm truly flattered, but I'm not who you think I am. Trust me." I say through gritted teeth. I now understand why Astrid beats him up right away. I've seen him touch her, but he's taking it a little farther than usual. I guess he's more brave now that we are older.
He puts a hand on my cheek, leaning in. I put my palm on his chest trying to push him away, but I'm not strong enough. He presses his lips to mine, well technically Astrid's, but at the moment, mine. I keep one hand on his chest, the other pounding against his shoulder repeatedly. I let out muffled screams into his mouth, my feet sliding as I lean against the wall trying to sit down and get away. To be completely honest, he's not that bad of a kisser, but I most certainly never want to feel his lips on mine again. This is so gay. I shutter at the thought. Dang it Snotlout, let me go!
Suddenly a pair of all to familiar hands pry him away from me. Thank Thor! I bend over huffing and puffing.
"What the heck Snotlout?" Astrid yells, stepping between him and me. She punches him in the jaw, knocking him to the ground.
Snotlout gets to his feet again, scowling. "Bring it Fishbone!" Astrid tackles him to the ground. I jump out of the way, standing by Fishlegs, who has a horrified expression on his face.
"Fight! Fight!" Tuff shouts.
"Take him out Hiccup!" Ruff adds.
"I knew this would happen eventually." Fishlegs tells me.
"What? Snotlout and Hiccup fighting over Astrid?" I ask.
"Well, that. And Hiccup finally becoming more of a viking and violent."
I watch as Astrid stratals Snotlout, about to punch him again. I pick up Inferno, light it up, and throw it. It lands beside Snotlout's head. "Guys stop!" I shout retrieving the weapon.
A little bit of blood trickles down her (my) nose. She gets off of him and they sit huffing and puffing. I bend down in front of her and pull a piece of parchment out of one of the pockets in the flight suit, then go over to the water trough, dipping it in the cool water, and head back to her. I bend down, placing a hand on her neck so I can examine the cuts. I gently rub my thumb over her cheek soothingly. I wish it was Astrid I was looking at instead of myself though, but I can tell there is still the same amount of longing for the other in both of our eyes. I dab the blood slowly, so I don't cause more pain.
"You know everyone is watching you. They aren't used to me treating people like this." she tells me.
"You would do it for me." I whisper back.
"Yeah, but they don't know that. All they see is me punching you all the time."
I smile, knowing it's true. i sit back on my heels, searching for knots and bruises. "We should change that." I say before getting to my feet. "I'll go get you two some ice." I announce.
Astrid's POV
As soon as Hiccup leaves, I glare at Snotlout. "Why were you two kissing?" I spit at him.
"Astrid loves me."
"She would rather die."
Hiccup?" Fishlegs asks me, interrupting my staring contest with Snotlout.
"Yes?"
"What's wrong? You're not acting like yourself today."
Hiccup's POV
I walk back into the arena and hand Snotlout a block of ice. "Thank you." he says, smiling at me. I shake my head and give one to Astrid as well.
"How are you feeling M'lady?" I ask.
"Good." she says smiling. We freeze when we both realize what I said.
"Wait, what?" Fishlegs asks. everyone stares back confused.
"Can we just tell them now, please?" I press. "We don't have to tell anyone else, but I can't take keeping this from them anymore."
"Why?" Astrid asks. "It hasn't even been a day."
"What's going on?" Snotlout urges, worried.
"I said we only have to tell them. We might be able to use it against the Berserkers, if the gang was in on it."
"Wait. You're pregnant aren't you." Snotlout bursts out.
"What?!" Astrid and I say together. I can kinda see how he could think that, with me being the girl wanting to tell them and Astrid being the guy and wanting to keep it a secret still. I shake my head, clearing it. "I can't get pregnant Snotlout."
"What? Why?" Ruff calls out.
"Astrid, would you like to explain?" I ask her. The others furrow their brows confused as to why I called Hiccup, Astrid.
She sighs, and begins. "When we were out marking the dragons, Fishlegs and I spotted Dagur's ships, so I went to tell Hiccup. On my way, he hit me with green paint. So, naturally I got mad and chased after him. He decided to hide in a cave until he thought it was safe. When he finally showed himself, I followed this dork," she stops to punch me in the shoulder.
"Wha- what? Ow! I thought we were over that!" I wail.
"Who then flew us into an island, where we crash-landed and were attacked by three unknown dragons. It was really weird. This lightning like fire surrounded us and knocked us out. Ultimately, we woke up trapped in the other's body." Astrid finishes. everyone stares back confused.
"So that means I've been flirting with Hiccup?" Snotlout gasps. "And, and you slept with your head in my lap... and I kissed you!" he says hyperventilating.
"I tried to tell you multiple times." I tell him.
The twins burst out laughing at this, which causes me to blush for some bizarre reason.
"Well, this sure clears things up." Fishlegs chuckles uncomfortably.
