Chapter 23~ The Unquiet Dead
Hello guys!
Today at school we had to write an essay in class. I started writing while the teacher was saying something. Suddenly she said 'Dickens', and when she did my head shot up and I was like 'What?!'. 'Dickens. Did you ever heard about 'the christmas carol'...' a boy of my class told me.
I looked at him and was like 'YES! I KNOW WHO DICKENS IS!'. Meanwhile my fangirl friend was laughing her ass out cause she knew that I was writing a chapter of Doctor Who on him. *Mind blow*

Melody's pov:
[Tardis]
The TARDIS was acting rather jerky: the hole place was shaking and an alarm was going on.
«Hold that one down!» The Doctor shouted to Rose, the two of them standing at two different sides of the console.
«I'm holding this one down!» She shouted back.
«Well, hold them both down!»
«It's not going to work!» Rose tried to hold on for dear life.
«Oi! I promised you a time machine and that's what you're getting. Now, you've seen the future, let's have a look at the past. Melody, what D'you think?» he asked looking over at me.
Although the whole place shaking, I was sitting perfectly still on the jump seat, a leg crossed over the other and reading a book on quantum physics.
«How can she do that?» Rose asked the Doctor, breathing heavily while holding on the railings.
Even though I couldn't see them from behind the book, I could feel he slightly glared at me while Rose watched me in admiration. I smirked, self fondly.
«She seems to be in the TARDIS's sympathy list.» The Doctor said sarcastically, pressing some buttons and pulling levers on the console.
«Yeah, but how did she manage to end there?» Rose asked.
I bet the Doctor shrugged. With that I closed my book, dropping it in my lap.
I looked forward knowing for sure which gaze I was going to catch.
«1860.» I told the Doctor.
He turned to look at Rose «How does 1860 sound?»
«What happened in 1860?» she asked back.
«I don't know. Neither does he. Tell you what, let's find out.» I told her, looking back at the Doctor.
He grinned widely. «Hold on, here we go!» He shouted then pulled a lever.
The TARDIS suddenly shook violently, sending the Doctor and Rose on the floor. Not me. I sat on the jump seat completely unharmed, not moving an inch, instead watching them amused.
The console was steaming and both the Doctor and Rose were lying on the floor. The Doctor laughing, which caused me to giggle like a little girl.
They got up.
«Blimey!» Rose said, panting a bit.
«You're telling me. Are you all right?» he asked referring the question mostly to me as he spun his head to look at me. Only to find me sitting perfectly straight on the jump seat.
He looked almost... disappointed?
I just grinned and waggled my fingers at him.
«Yeah. I think so! Nothing broken... Did we make it? Where are we?» Rose asked, causing the Doctor look back at her.
He looked at the screen. «I did it!» he then said.
«Give the man a medal.» I grinned.
«Earth, Naples, December 24th, 1860.» The Doctor added.
«That's so weird... It's Christmas.» Rose said, landing on the console.
While she was saying that, I jumped down from my seat and went to stay by the Doctor's side, a hand behind my back coping him.
Then, at the same time, we held our left arms out gesturing towards the door.
«All yours.» The Doctor and I said at the same time. I think he started getting used to me finishing his phrases, being as clever as he, holding hands... May I say, I am much more cleverer that he thinks. I mean Lizzie is much more cleverer than Melody.
«But, it's like... think about it, though. Christmas. 1860. Happens once. Just once, and it's gone. It's finished. It'll never happen again. Except for you.» Rose said, studying him intently. There wasn't a big gap between the two so my grin fell slightly as she did. My instinct kicking in. Instinct to stand in between the two.
But I had to trust Rose. Plus, I don't think she would've kissed him if I was present too. At least I hope she wouldn't. Who knows what to expect from her, she was raised by a Jackie Tyler!
The Doctor, though, was standing there, his arms behind his back and a huge grin on his face. I didn't even notice my arms were now crossed on my chest, defensively.
«You can go back and see days that are dead and gone and a hundred thousand sunsets ago... no wonder you never stay still...» Rose said.
At that I smirked, relaxing a little as I watched her.
«Not a bad life.» I spoke, then looking up at the Doctor from the corner of my eyes while smiling.
«Better with three.» Rose added.
That did hurt. And you know why? Cause I couldn't stay with them. I knew I couldn't. I had this... feeling I had to go on. I had to, I couldn't travel with the Doctor for a long time. Especially not with this one. I could change other things and I definitely didn't want to.
The two of them, instead, grinned at each other for a few moments. «Come on then!» Rose exclaimed cheerfully then slapped his bum and dashed towards the door.
I let out a laugh while the Doctor looked bemused. «Oi, oi, oi! Where do you think you're going?!» he then asked her, me still standing by his side, my arms folded on my chest.
She spun around to look at him, a happy grin flashing on her face. «1860!»
«Go out there dressed like that, you'll start a riot, Barbarella! There's a wardrobe through there. First left, second right, third on the left, go straight ahead, under the stairs, past the bins, it's the fifth door on your left.»
«Hurry up!» I added. Rose rushed off to get changed.
I looked up at the Doctor only to find out he did the exact same thing looking down at me. There was a big high difference between us, even though I was higher than Rose. He then grinned at me.
I chuckled nudging him playfully with my elbow, his grin never leaving his face.
«Rose!» I then called and walked off behind her. As I exited I could feel the Doctor's eyes on my back.
I walked into the corridor finding Rose standing there, looking lost.
She looked at me, desperate. «Help.» She squeaked.
I laughed and signalised for her to follow.
I walked through the corridor, sure of where I was going, Rose following not far behind. I suddenly stopped, causing Rose almost run into me.
I sighed deeply then «Vuaila!» I exclaimed as I flew open a door. Which, for the record, definitely wasn't there before.
Rose started at me wide eyes. «How did you do that?!» she asked me, shocked.
I grinned. «I'm in the TARDIS's sympathy list, remember?» I reminded, feeling fond of myself.
Rose rolled her eyes playfully «Yeah, whatever.» she said and entered in the big room-wardrobe. I grinned ear to ear at her watching as she looked through dresses, letting out a little squeal as she found one. I put a hand and the wall, giving it a slight pat as a thank you.
The TARDIS groaned gently under my touch.
«You coming or what?» Rose called, causing me to look up at her. I chuckled, then ran to choose a dress.
[Tardis]
The Doctor was doing some more unnecessary repair work as Rose and I walked in. She walked to him bravely, contrarily to me. Rose wore a long dark dress, which showed her shoulders, wearing a dark cape on. I wore a long dark sea-blue U neck dress with golden decorations on the neckline; the sleeves were larger at the wrists and fell wavy on them.
I looked nice but I still preferred not being noticed.
The Doctor gave her a glance turning off his screwdriver.
«Don't laugh!» Rose said, laughing.
«You look very good!» he told her. She stopped laughing and smiled instead.
There was a pause of them looking at each other, then The Doctor looked away awkwardly.
«...considering.» he added, then turned on his screwdriver again. I rolled my eye. He always had to ruin everything.
«Considering what?» Rose asked.
«That You're human!»
I raised a brow, my sassiness kicking in. I wanted to step out and Z snap at him, saying 'Excuse me!?'. But I still was embraced for how I looked. I wasn't sure if I looked good enough.
Rose, instead, was amused «I think it's a compliment.» she said, making me smirk silently. I was lading on the console with my hands. «...Aren't you going to change?» she asked.
This time I couldn't resist. «He changed his jumper, do your research!» I told her, amused.
The two of them looked at me, the Doctor turning off his sonic again and looking at me in surprise. As soon as he did, I felt my cheeks growing red.
«Blimey!» he said, eyeing me.
I blushed violently so lowered my gaze, avoiding his. Instead I looked down at myself. «I look like some sort of a green wave, with golden things on.» I told him, running a finger on the decorations of my neckline.
«You look beautiful!» He said instead. I looked up only to see him eyes, as he eyes me, stopping at my chest and gulping. Men are all the same.
«Oi! Eyes front soldier!» I said, making his eyes flicker up at mine then down on the floor as he blushed, the red crawling to the tip of his ears.
I couldn't deny, though, that I was flattered by his attention. He was the only man in existence who made me feel that way. Special. Loved.
«Consider that she's human too.» Rose stepped in, grinning. The Doctor and I moved our gazes on her, and I grinned.
«...Right. Come on!» The still blushing Doctor said as he jumped out of the space beneath the controls.
I was about to move too when «You, stay there! You've done this before. This is mine!» Rose told him then hurried towards the door, opening it. I knew she was referring to me too, cause she knew I already traveled with the Doctor and did this things. I mean, with the future him. Oh, you know what I mean.
I looked at the Doctor, the two of us amused by the Tyler. We giggled silently like two kids.
As our laughs faded, he held his arm out for me.
«Would you do me the honour?» he asked, politely. Although I could see the sparkle of amusement in his eyes.
I chuckled silently then approached him and linked our arms. The two of us looked at each other and I smiled at him. No words were needed. With that, the two of us walked out, arm in arm. We exited the TARDIS only to find ourselves standing on a 1860 street.
What before was an untouched snow, had now three pair of footprints on.
Oh, and did I mention, it was snowing.
I deeply sniffed the cold air, then letting it out from my mouth. A cloud of hot air flew out and up in the sky, and I observed it like if it was the most interesting thing in existence.
The Doctor chuckled silently, watching me. I unfazed, and nudged him in his stomach softly. He, still wearing a grin on, looked over at Rose.
The two of us walked to her, arm in arm.
«Ready for this?» I asked as the Doctor offered his right arm for her. She smiled and took it.
«Here we go.» he said.
«History!» I added.
With that we walked off.
We walked down the street, observing everything.
Rose in amazement, the Doctor and I with our usual grin on our faces. Although, I was amazed too.
He walked in another direction pulling me with him as our arms were still intertwined. Rose followed.
There were carol singers in the background, making the whole atmosphere even better.
The Doctor bought a newspaper, not for a second leaving my arm. And, may I say, I was glad he didn't. He then unfolded it, using his right hand, while I used my left to help. Then we scanned it.
«I got the flight a bit wrong.» He told Rose as we started walking again.
«I don't care.» she said, happily.
«It's not 1860, it's 1869.» I told her.
«I don't care!»
«And it's not Naples.» I said.
«I don't care.»
«It's Cardiff.» The Doctor told her.
The two of us, arm in arm, continued walking while Rose paused.
«Right...» I heard her say. I chuckled silently.
We continued walking down the street, me observing stores and houses. It was so different from the real Cardiff. I've been there once, when we visited it with the orphanage, and I remember walking down this same street.
So much time passed and so many things happened... I am a different person now. Look at me. Walking here with this wonderful man by my side, in 1869!
I couldn't love my life more.
Suddenly we heard someone screaming.
Oh, maybe I could.
I grinned widely and I bet the Doctor did the same.
«That's more like it!» He said, like if he read my mind.
He then tossed the newspaper over his shoulder, grabbed my hand and the two of us sprained off in the direction of the screaming. Rose followed behind.
We ran into a theatre. People were rushing out of the doors so it was difficult for us to come in. But, even now, the Doctor had a tight and reassuring hold on my hand.
We then ran into a big room, with a stage and rows of chairs, Rose stopping next to us. Suddenly I, the Doctor, Rose and probably everyone who was running away, noticed a blue gas zooming around. And it was coming out from an old lady standing in the middle of the room.
I felt someone squeezing my hand. I unfazed and looked up at a really grinning Doctor.
«Fantastic.» He said, cheerfully. I rolled my eyes. This one particular thing in The Doctor never changed.
The last of the gas leaved the old woman's mouth and she slumped back in the chair, lifeless.
The Doctor, pulling me with him, approached a man who was standing on the stage.
«Did you see where it came from?» The Doctor inquired the man.
«Ah. The wags reveal themselves, don't they?» The man said, angrily «I trust you're satisfied!»
The Doctor and I looked at the man slightly taken aback. What did he mean? Why did he think it was us?
We were unfazed by Rose's voice shouting «Oi! Leave her alone!»
I spun my head around to see what was happening. A man and a woman were making off with the old woman's body. I stared confused at the couple who was carrying the old lady off.
«Doctor, I'll get 'em!» Rose told him then starting making her way through the crowd. My dejavu wasn't gone. I pursed my lips as I took a decision.
«Okay!» He shouted back, then turned around to look at the man on the stage.
«I'll go with her.» I told the Doctor, as I started making my way through the crowd, his hand leaving mine. It's weird, but without him holding my hand, I felt... Empty. Alone.
«Oi!» the familiar voice shouted, someone coughing my arm in mid-air. I spun around only to meet the Doctors eyes looking at me. His enthusiasm was replaced with preoccupation. Was he worried for me?
He gazed in through my eyes, while people were screaming and running out of the room.
«What?» I asked, this time being exited myself. And impatient. Slightly.
«Be careful.» he told me, slowly and firmly. I could see preoccupation filling his blue eyes.
That made me smile. He cared for me. He just met me and, though, he cared. I approached him, taking the spot I was standing in before, then raised on my tip toes and kissed his forehead, holding on his arms for support. Like the 11 did with me, so many times. I suddenly really missed his embrace. The way he would check out if I was okay every time. But I enjoyed staying with all the Doctors. However he looked, he was always the same and he always cared for me. Always.
As I pulled back, returning to stand fully on the ground, I looked in the Doctors eyes. They softened, worry still present, though. I smiled softly, my hands still on his forearms.
«You too.» I told him, suddenly worried. He gave me a firm nod.
I smiled then turned around and sighed.
«Geronimo.» I whispered to myself then threw myself into the crowd, following Rose. She exited from the room.
«Rose!» I shouted as I followed her outside.
As I exited outside, I ran my eyes over my surroundings, looking for Rose.
When I finally found her I saw a man man approaching her silently from behind. He then clamped a tissue to her mouth. She struggled for a few seconds, then went limp.
«Oh, no you di'nt.» I growled under my breath as I made my way to the hearse. I waited till the old man walked away leaving the girl alone with Rose.
She bended down to pick up Rose's legs and that's when I stepped in «OI!»
The girl looked up her eyes widening in fear as she saw me «What do you think you're doing??!» I asked her.
«I'm. Um. It's- not how it looks. She just. She felt bad. She fainted. But don't worry, we'll take her to the nursery.» she replayed.
I smirked, folding her arms on her chest. «I've never seen someone in my life lying worse.»
The girl gulped. She was caught. There was no way of escaping.
«Leave my friend be or I-» I started saying but was cut off by a tissue which was pressed to my mouth. Drugs, chloroform probably. I tried to fight it as hardly as I could, but it was all useless. Soon everything went black.

3 person pov:
Rose woke up first, looking slightly out of sorts. She looked down only to see Melody still lying next to her unconscious.
«Elizabeth.» Rose whispered, slightly panting as she shook Lizzie's shoulder, trying to wake her up. «Elizabeth!»
After a moment, Lizzie's closed eyes flew open and she blinked a couple of times.
«What the hell...?» she said, as Rose helped her sitting up. Lizzie groaned as she did.
She looked at Rose, still panting «Why is it always the two of us?» she asked the girl, sounding exhausted.
Rose laughed a little, still supporting her friend.
They didn't notice the gas from the lamps filling the corpse of Redpath. He sat up suddenly.
«You alright?» Melody asked, still feeling slightly dizzy.
Rose nodded. Suddenly Melody noticed the corpse behind Rose. She raised a brow, not sure if the man was a threat or not.
«Rose...» she said cautiously, not moving her eyes from the corpse.
Rose looked behind her and jumped in alarm as he started making zombie noises at the girls.
«Are you all right? You're kidding me, yeah? You're just kidding.» Rose said, smiling nervously.
He climbed out of the coffin.
«You are, you're kidding me, aren't ya?» Rose asked, the two girls still sitting on the table.
He took staggering steps towards her.
«Okay. Not kidding.» Lizzie said. She jumped down from the table, grabbing Rose's arm and pulling her off of the table. Lizzie ran to the door and tried to open it.
She rattled the lock, trying to work it out. But it wasn't opening. She slammed her hands on the door, in frustration. Then looked back at Rose who was looking at her in hope. «It's locked.» Lizzie told her.
Rose stood against the door next to Lizzie who was looking around, desperately searching for something to defend herself.
Suddenly The old woman's body rose from the other coffin too. Rose gasped, while Lizzie sighed in exasperation. «You have got to be kidding.» she muttered still searching for something to brake the door with. She didn't want to hurt or kill the zombies. She never wanted to kill. Even if, if they were zombies, they technically were already dead.
Rose spotted a vase and lobed it at Redpath. It did nothing but caused him to stumble slightly. Rose rattled the handle frantically, Lizzie still thinking while staring at the walking dead.
«Let me out! Open the door!» Rose shouted.
Lizzie, eyes fixed on the door, decided to call too «Let us out!»
«Please, let us out!» Rose cried, while Lizzie looked back at the corpses.
«Who are you? What'd you want?» she asked them. They ignored her continuing walking towards her. Lizzie clenched her jaw in thoughts of what to do.
Rose was still hammering on the door as the corpses got closer and closer, Lizzie by her side.
«Let us out! Somebody, open the door! Open the door!» Rose shouted desperately.
«Let us-» Lizzie tried to shout but Redpath put a hand over her mouth, muffling her scream.
Rose noticed that. «Let her alone!» She shouted and threw herself on Redpath. He shoved her off causing her to fall on the ground. But she quickly got up. Lizzie tried to break free, but the force in her body started to abandon her. Her eyes started closing.
At that moment, someone kicked the door in. Rose looked at who it was only to see the Doctor standing in the doorway. He pulled her behind herself then turned to Redpath and Lizzie, who's eyes lit up with joy as she saw the Doctor.
«I think this is my dance.» he said then released Melody from Redpath's grip. He pulled her closer, wrapping a hand around her waist protectively. Melody gasped for air, her breath calming down.
«It's a prank? It must be. We're under some mesmeric influence.» Melody heard the man from the theater saying, in disbelief.
«No, we're not. The dead are walking.» the Doctor said, serious.
He then grinned down at the panting Melody. «Hi!» he said.
She looked up at him and smiled, still panting «Hi!»
The Doctor's grin transformed into a smile as he studied Melody's face. The two of them gazed in each others eyes, forgetting about everything that was happening around them. Melody couldn't read his emotions or what he thought because come on, who could? He was the Doctor.
But still they looked in each other's eyes finding them the most interesting thing in the universe, time stopping around them.
«Who's your friend?» Rose asked, interrupting their fazes.
The Doctor looked over at her «Charles Dickens.» he told her, then turning back around, his hands not leaving Melody's waist.
«Oh. Okay.» Rose said.
Melody looked over hers, and the Doctor's shoulder, and grinned at him «I'm a... fanatic. Really love your books!» she told him.
«Fan, yeah. I've heard that one already.» Dickens mumbled under his nose.
Melody looked up at the Doctor «Really, Doctor?»
He grinned not looking down at her, instead slightly tightening the grip on her waist.
He then spoke to the corpses «My name's the Doctor. Who are you, then? What do you want?» He asked them.
«Oh, I asked them too. I don't think you'll have an answer-»
«We're failing. Open the rift, we're dying. Trapped in this form, cannot sustain, help us.» Redpath cut Melody off. Then the both corpses rose their heads to the ceiling. The blue gas left them with a wailing sound and both collapsed to the floor.
Rose, Dickens, Gwyneth and Sneed watched them in pure shock while the Doctor narrowed his brows. Melody just stared at the bodies on the floor.
«That's just being sexist.» she concluded, crossing her arms on her chest. The Doctor chuckled from his chest. He then placed a soft kiss on Melody's temple.
She smiled.
She knew his heart made of ice was slowly melting. But what she didn't know yet was that, like ice melts into rain, sometimes love turns into pain.
