Chapter 22~ Another Beginning

*squeals* revelation!

~~~~
[Engine room]
Jabe and the Doctor were running back through the maintenance corridor.
«Heat levels critical.» the computer said.
The duo reached the ventilation room, stopping at the end.
«Oh. And guess where the switch is.» the Doctor said, not really content.
The switch was located at the other side of the enormous and sharp fans.
«Heat levels rising. Heat levels rising.» the Computer said.
The Doctor saw a lever on the wall and pulled down a lever. The fans slowed down.
«External temperature five thousand degrees.» the computer said.
The Doctor grinned happy that it worked and moved away from the lever, but as soon as he leaved the lever the fan started to speed up again.
«External temperature five thousand degrees.» the computer announced. The Doctor looked hopelessly at the fans. Suddenly they slowed down again. The Doctor turned around only to see Jabe pulling the lever down and holding it there.
«You can't. The heat's going to vent through this place.» he told her.
«I know.» she agreed.
«Jabe, you're made of wood.» the Doctor told her.
«Then stop wasting time.» she told him. She paused the added «Time Lord.»
He grinned at her and ran back to the fan.
«Heat levels rising. Heat levels rising.» the computer announced.
[Observation gallery]
Melody and Rose were sitting down on the floor, all sweaty and pretty scared. Rose was playing with her fingers while Melody had her eyes closed and her head thrown backwards landed on the door.
Rose scared for what could happen; Melody scared for the Doctor and Rose. She was afraid of even the idea of something happening to these two. She couldn't bare loosing them.
«Melody?» Rose suddenly called.
«Yes?» Melody opened her eyes and looked over at Rose, still resting her head landing on the wall. Rose played with her fingers nervously.
«Are we... Going to be okay?» she asked Melody.
Melody sweetly smiled. «We will, Rose Tyler. I promise you.» she said. Rose smiled back as Melody landed back again and closed her eyes. Rose looked down at her the ground. She was mid lying on her side landing on her left arm, while Melody sat landing on the wall, her hands in her lap, a foot over the other.
«You trust him so much...» Rose suddenly said looking up at Melody, who opened her eyes again. «You literally trust him with your life.» she said.
«I do.» Melody replayed, smiling a little. Then looked over at Ross with a raised brow, questioningly. «Why?»
«Oh, nothing, it's just...» Rose looked down in her lap, sighing. «It's just you told me you've known him since this morning-»
«The morning 5 billion years ago,59 be exact.» Melody corrected, raising a finger.
«Oh, shut up.» Rose said, and the two girls laughed. As they calmed down Rose continued.
«Anyway, you told me you just met him... But you trust that man like you've known him for ages.» Rose said. Melody smiled with her lips pursed, her glance lowered in her lap.
«What if I do know him from ages?» Melody asked, looking up at Rose. A really confused Rose.
«W-what do you mean?» she asked.
Melody sighed, straightening up and crossing her legs, sitting in front of Rose. «I do know him from ages.» she told Rose.
«B-but you told me you've know him-» Rose started but was interrupted.
«I met him this morning.» she said. Rose started at her confused. «Oh, right you don't know all that stuff yet.» Melody said rubbing her forehead. «Okay, so... The Doctor is an alien.» Melody told Rose. The girl nodded. «And his race never dies. They regenerate. He is the same person, except his body changes.»
Rose stared at Melody.
«One body dies, another comes. It's simple.» Melody explained.
There was a pause, in which Melody stared at Rose with her eyebrows raised giving Rose's brain time to elaborate. Finally it did «So, what you are saying, is that The Doctor can never die? Never ever?» Rose asked, in disbelief.
«I didn't say never ever.» Melody said, rocking back and forth. Rose raised a brow.
«There is this thing, called the regeneration energy, which is fundamental for him to regenerate.» Melody explained. «So, once there will be no more regeneration energy...» Melody's voice broke, her happy face falling as she clapped her hands together and looked back at Rose. «He will die.» her voice cracked in pain. Rose could hear that. She could hear how Melody cared for the Doctor. Which brought her back to the first question.
«So... You know him? Like from a long time?» Rose asked.
Melody nodded, her lips pursed in a little smile.
«But... he doesn't know you?» Rose took a guess.
Melody shook her head no. «I've travelled with his future regeneration.» she told Rose.
Realization drew on Rose's face. «So he doesn't really know you because you know him in the future. His future. Which hadn't come for him yet!» Rose realized.
Melody nodded.
«And he can't know because it could mess up things in the future!» Rose said, making Melody nod again.
Rose let out an exhausted sight, relaxing as she leaned back on the wall. «All this... Time traveling stuff gives me a headache.» she told Melody, who grinned.
«Wibbly-Wobbly, Timey-Wimey stuff.» Melody told her, cheerfully.
Rose gave her a look, like if she was crazy or something.
Melody waved a hand at Rose with a smirk. «You have it coming.» she told her.
Rose chuckled and so did Melody.
A pause followed in which Rose looked forward at the sun outside out of the window and Melody looked down at her suddenly interesting leg. She was taking a decision. When she looked up, she didn't know if she took the right one.
«Elizabeth.» she said.
Rose looked at her. «What?» She questioned.
Lizzie smiled then handed Rose her hand. «Elizabeth.» She repeated.
Rose frowned, not totally understanding.
Lizzie sighed blocking the air from exiting from her mouth, which caused her to look like a fish.
She then straightened up, put on a smile -not really fake and not really true- and again handed Rose her hand. «Hello, Rose Tyler. My name is Elizabeth Smith.» she said.
«Wait a second-» Rose said, straightening her position to face Lizzie. «Your name is Elizabeth? Not Melody?» she asked
Elizabeth smiled with a nod «It's a pleasure meeting you too.»
«So you lied to us this whole time?!» Rose asked, hallucinated.
Melody gazed up «Well
«You lied on your name. On your identity. What else did you lie on!? Are you an alien too?!» Rose exclaimed, angrily in the slightest.
«I didn't lie to you, Elizabeth isn't even my real name!» Elizabeth exclaimed.
«Oh, so you lying again, you-»
«Rose!» Lizzie cut her off. «I am not lying, I don't know my real name!» she told Rose, almost begging for her to understand. Desperately needing her to understand.
Rose relaxed a bit. «...What do you mean?» she asked.
«I am an orphan my whole life! I was found when I was 5 and was raised in an orphanage! Since I was 5 I saw dreams about the Doctor. I know everything! I even know his real name!» Lizzie said, desperately. Rose stayed silent.
«When I was 12 I met him and told him about my dreams... Since that day they stopped. When I was 19 he returned and took me with him. I travelled with him for a bit then, I asked if I could go visit a friend. And that's how I met this Doctor. Then met you.» she told Rose, who was still silent.
Lizzie laughed frantically. «I don't even know if this whole thing was supposed to happen! I could've opened a crack in the universe as far as I know.» she said, heading her head on her hand. A bit of silence followed. She then looked back up at Rose.
«...But, however it is, I am here. And I care deeply for the Doctor. He is the only person I can kill for. And, believe me, I don't just go and kill people!... You asked me if I knew him, you asked me if I trust that man. Rose, I know that man ever since I can remember myself and I trust him with my life because, well, he is my life.» She sighed deeply. «I am lying to him because I don't want to change his future, because that man is the best man I ever knew. I saw how his home planet burned, how people he loved died. I felt the same pain he felt when that happened. I saw him being alone, crying, dying, I saw him being separated from the love of his life... That man is everything to me.» she told Rose, her eyes teary, but no tears spilling.
«And Rose Tyler, you are going to find out he is the same for you too.» she told Rose.
Rose gulped, trying to elaborate the new information.
«I... I-I don't know what to say.» she said and laughed silently. Lizzie joined, brushing a strand of hair from her face. When the two finished laughing Lizzie looked at Rose.
«Rose, I am sorry, but I have to lie. For everyone's good.» Lizzie said.
It took her a moment, but Rose then slowly nodded.
Lizzie smiled and handed Rose her hand. «Friends?» She asked.
Rose looked up at her and chuckled. Then squeezed Lizzie's hand. «Friends.» she told Lizzie.
The two smiled at each other. Lizzie didn't know if she did the right thing by telling Rose all this, but she knew that she could trust her. The two girls returned in their usual position, Lizzie lying on the floor with her eyes closed and her back landed on the door, and Rose staring out of the window.
«Elizabeth?» Rose called.
Lizzie grinned like a Cheshire Cat, her eyes still closed. Then she opened them. «Yes?»
«Am I... Important?» Rose asked her.
Lizzie chuckled. «Oh, Rose Tyler... You are the most important human in existence.» Lizzie told her.
Rose scoffed. «Right, yeah...»
«No, Rose.» Lizzie said and Rose looked at her. Lizzie gave her a smile «You are... the most important human in existence.»
Rose stared at her, trying to read through the lines. But there was only one line.
Lizzie just grinned again. «Trust me.» She told her and closed her eyes again.
Rose smirked from the corner of her lips. That day Rose Tyler made herself two promises: Never give up Lizzie's secret and never leave her and The Doctor. She knew there was much more behind Lizzie's story that even Lizzie herself didn't know, but she also knew, Lizzie would've found it all out. She just needed time.
«Heat levels hazardous.» the computer suddenly announced.
The observation window bagan to crack. Rose looked at Lizzie, panic in her eyes. Lizzie didn't even bother to look at Rose. She just gulped.
«Oh, Doctor, come on.» she whispered, through gritted teeth.
[The Manchester Suite]
The glass began to crack there too.
«We're going to die!» the Moxx exclaimed.
«Heat levels hazardous
[Engine room]
The Doctor dodged the first fan and ran underneath it. He looked anxiously up at the next one.
«Heat levels critical. Heat levels critical
[Int. Viewing Gallery]
The glass cracked even more. Melody and Rose cowered against the wall.
«Shields malfunction. Shields malfunction
Rays of sun blasted in through the cracks, burning holes in the parts of the mental wall they hit. Rose screamed. Melody grabbed her hand and squeezed it.
[Engine Room]
The Doctor was still standing before the second fan. He looked back at Jabe who was sweating and breathing heavily.
«Heat levels rising. Heat levels rising
He dogged under the second fan too.
[The Manchester Suite]
The glass cracked further, engulfing the Moxx in light. He cried in pain.
[Int Viewing Gallery]
The sunrays hit the wall either side of Melody and Rose. Melody let out a sight of relief as she dogged one.
«Heats leaves raising. Heats level raising
[Int Ventilation Chamber]
As the Doctor stood before the third fan, Jabe started shaking violently. Suddenly she gasped as one of her hands took fire. She screamed. The Doctor looked back, shocked. Now there was no one to hold the lever down, the fan circulated that fast that they could nearly be seen, in order to cool the ship down.
It was impossible for the Doctor to get through.
[Int Viewing Gallery]
The walls around Melody and Rose were rapidly burning and, the two girls, stayed as close as possible so the Rays wouldn't hit them.
[Int Ventilation Chamber]
«Planet explodes in 10... 9...»
The Doctor closed his eyes. He had to do that. He had to save everyone. He had nothing to loose.
«8... 7... 6... 5... 4...»
The Doctor, still with his eyes closed, calmly stepped through the fan. When at the other side, he opened his eyes and dashed to the switch, pulling it down.
«Rise Shields!» the Doctor shouted happily.
[Int. Viewing Gallery]
Rose had her eyes closed and her face buried into Melody's chest who, by instinct, pulled her into a hug protectively.
[Ext Platform One]
«...1...»
The force fields around the ship reset just as the sun engulfed in silence. It exploded leaving the ship completely unharmed.
[Int View Gallery]
«Exoglass repair. Exoglass repair. Exoglass repair
Melody opened slowly her eyes panting heavily. Rose did the same. Melody released the hug slowly. The cracks in the window vanish.
«You okay?» Melody asked Rose.
She nodded slowly as she looked out of the window. Melody followed her gaze only see what Rose saw. The fractured remains of their home floating by them.
Rose looked back at Melody and Melody did the same. Rose's eyes flashed with tears. Melody smiled softly at her and pulled her in a hug.
«You did it, Doctor.» Melody whispered to herself, as she smiled into Rose's shoulder.
[Int Ventilation Chamber]
The Doctor walked back through the fans. He paused for a moment to look sadly at the charred and smoking remains of Jabe. Then he walked away.
[The Manchester Suite]
Rose walked back into the observation gallery, where all the aliens where sitting around, wounded or dead. Melody followed not far behind, her arms folded on her chest.
The Doctor walked briskly in, a few minutes later. He glanced at Rose, Melody standing next to her, but didn't pause to talk to her.
Instead he went to Jabe's companions. He muttered them a few words, then placed a hand on the shoulder of one of them, leaving him to grieve.
He walked back next to Melody and Rose.
«You all right?» Rose asked him, while Melody just looked sadly at the man.
«Yeah, I'm fine. I'm full of ideas, I'm bristling with them. Idea number one, teleportation through five thousand degrees needs some kind of feed. Idea number two, this feed must be hidden nearby.» he said, strode over to the ostrich egg, broke it open causing a teleported feed fall out. He picked it up.
«Idea number three, if you're as clever as me, -Melody rolled her eyes at that- then a teleportation feed can be reversed.» The Doctor said.
He twisted the feed. Cassandra appeared before them, apparently in the middle of gloating.
«Oh, you should have seen their little alien faces.» she was saying when she suddenly noticed her soundings. «Oh.»
«The last human.» The Doctor announced sarcastically.
«So, you passed my little test. Bravo. This makes you eligible to join, er... the Human Club.» she said, clearly flustered.
«People have died, Cassandra. You murdered them.» Melody said dryly, anger in her voice sounding clear. And still she remained calm, her arms folded on her chest.
«It depends on your definition of people. And that's enough of a technicality to keep your lawyers dizzy for centuries. Take me to court, then Doctor! And watch me smile and cry and flutter...» Cassandra said.
«And creak?» the Doctor interrupted.
«And what?» Cassandra asked, confused.
«Creak! You're creaking.» he told her. Cassandra's skin, in fact, was tightening. Her eyes becoming bloodshot, while se got whiter and whiter.
«What? Ah! I'm drying out! Oh, sweet heavens. Moisturise me, moisturise me! Where are my surgeons? My lovely boys! It's too hot!» Cassandra panicked. Melody's heart squeezed in pain. She knew Cassandra deserved it, but she didn't want to murder her. And though it was right. Cassandra was now covered with red blotches.
«You raised the temperature.» The Doctor told her, his hand in his pockets.
«Have pity! Moisturise me! Oh, oh, Doctor! I'm sorry. I'll do anything!» Cassandra cried pathetically and terrified.
Rose walked up to the Doctor while Melody, who knew there was no way in saving Cassandra anyway, just closed her eyes not wanting to assist at the show.
«Help her.» Rose asked, shakily.
«Everything has its time and everything dies.» the Doctor said coldly.
«I'm... too... young!» Cassandra croaked, as she shriveled up.
Then she exploded. Rose looked shocked and emotionless, while Melody just opened her eyes and watched the Doctor. He looked completely cold and not remotely fazed. He just turned around and walked out, leaving Melody and everybody else inside.
Melody looked down, a tear sliding down her cheek. She hated seeing people die. She couldn't stand it. And though she saw it since she was 5... She looked up whipping the tear, as everybody else were standing completely still.
Melody walked up to Rose placing a supportive hand on her back. Rose didn't react. She was staring at the vertical trampoline which now had a big hole in the middle.
Melody smiled softly, her lips pursed. She then looked further, catching the look of the Face of Boe. He gestured with his head to the door, and Melody knew exactly what to do.
She gave a light pat at Rose's shoulder then walked out.
[Space]
«Shuttles four and six departing. This unit now closing down for maintenance.» the computer announced.
[Int The Manchester Suit]
The Manchester suit was now completely empty apart form Rose, who was standing at the window watching Earth burn with a very sad and vulnerable look on her face, obvious to the Doctor watching her from the doorway. A rocket flew passed the window.
A girl reached the Doctor standing by his side. «Ah, what a silence down here without people. It's all so calm and peaceful... Almost boring. I wonder how the little blue buddies there, work here all days. When there are no people this place is so... Silent. So... Calm. And creepy, just a bit. While walking down the hallway I had this strange feeling someone was watching me. I really hope there was no one because I don't think they would be pleased by me singing Toxic. That song really gets stuck in mind.» Melody said, as she landed on the doorway next to the Doctor, her arms folded on her chest.
He smirked. «Well, you should see here on Mondays.» he replayed.
Melody smiled from the corner of her lips, as she watched Rose standing there.
«We pass all our lives thinking of how it will happen...» Melody said, watching the pieces of Earth flying outside. She then silently scoffed.
«Aren't we just so stupid and brilliant at the same time?» Melody asked him in admiration.
The Doctor, who was standing slightly behind, sighed deeply. «Today people have died. And I didn't save them. They counted on me and I didn't save them. It's like this every time, Melody. People trust me, they have faith in me and I disappoint them. It's been like this in forever.
I always disappoint people, sometimes even leave them behind. Or they leave me. Everyone left me. And no doubt, one day, even you and Rose will leave me. Or something will happen to you, and that would be my fault.
I see people die everyday, and, believe me, I am really old... I saw my home planet burn... -At this Melody looked at him. She knew how painful it was for talking about Gallifrey, and she appreciated the idea he was talking about it to her- My home burned and I watched it burn. I went to war. I killed people.» he said. He then looked down, catching her gaze.
«Are you still trusting me with your life, Melody Smith?» he asked her. His voice was cold, emotionless. But, as always, Lizzie saw through that mask. She saw the sad and lonely man he was.
He turned to face him completely, standing in front of him.
Then she smiled.
«Always.» she told him.
She didn't bother to wait and look how the Doctor reacted, she just enveloped him into a hug. He hugged back, and squeezed her tight. He needed that. That hug made him feel so much better and the aroma of Melody's peach and vanilla shampoo made it even better.
When Melody pulled away she smiled at him, resting a hand on his chest while his hands flew in his pockets. He did the same, smiling back.
Then she turned around and walked up to Rose, the Doctor watching her with a smile. He really felt a bond with this girl, and something in her remind him of a person. A person he lost so much time ago. The person who counted everything in his life. The person who now is gone.
A tear sneaked down his cheek as he thought of her. It always happened... That single tear would always fall when he thought of her. His soulmate...
He looked further where Melody already reached Rose and was standing next to her, her hands in the pockets of her jeans.
The Doctor decided to walk up to them. Rose turned around when she heard the Doctor's footsteps approaching, while Melody just looked out of the window. He came to stand beside her.
Melody at the left, The Doctor at the right and Rose in the middle. She looked out of the window again.
«The end of the Earth.» Rose said, tearfully. «It's gone. We were too busy saving ourselves. No one saw it go. -The Doctor looked down knowing he would catch her looking at Rose. And in fact she was. He suddenly just smiled at her. Rose speaking, interrupted his faze- All those years... all that history, and no one was even looking. It's just...»
The Doctor and Melody, at the same time, held their hands out to her. Melody the left one, The Doctor the right.
«Come with us.» The Doctor told Rose, as he already knew Melody wasn't going leave him. At least not now.
Rose looked up at Melody who smiled gently at her. She then moved her gaze at her right side and up at the Doctor, who smiled too, pursing his lips. With that Rose took their hands, they turned around, and walked away together.
[London]
Back in the 2005, Rose stepped out of the TARDIS. She looked around at the crowd, now seeing them all in a new light.
Somewhere in the background A baby cried, a man laughed...
The Doctor and Melody stepped out of the TARDIS too, again holding hands without even noticing.
«Big Issue! Big Issue!» a man shouted.
«You think it'll last forever, people and cars and concrete, but it won't. One day it's all gone.» the Doctor told, mainly Rose because he had a feeling Melody knew even more than he did.
«Even the sky.» Melody added as she watched the sky, the Doctor and Rose joining her.
«My planet's gone.» the Doctor said and Rose turned to look at him. Of course Melody told her about the war and the destruction of his planet, but the Doctor himself never mentioned his home before.
«It's dead. It burned like the Earth. It's just rocks and dust before it's time.» he said. Melody rubbed her thumb over it. He squeezed her hand gently as a thank you.
«What happened?» Rose asked.
«There was a war and we lost.» he told her.
«A war with who?» Rose asked, because Melody didn't tell her about that. The Doctor didn't answer, seemingly lost in thoughts.
«What about your people?» Rose then asked.
«I'm a Time Lord. I'm the last of the Time Lords. They're all gone. I'm the only survivor. I'm left travelling on my own 'cos there's no one else.» he told her, sadly.
«There's Melody and me...» Rose told, smiling at him.
«You've seen how dangerous it is. Do you want to go home?» Melody asked seriously. But, if you were that kind of people who could read someone, you would see she was screaming for Rose to stay. And so did the Doctor.
Lizzie knew that Rose continued traveling with the Doctor in her dreams but now, in the story, there was Melody too. What if she changed something?
Rose looked at Melody and at the Doctor for a few seconds.
«I don't know. I want...» she sniffed the air. «Oh! Can you smell chips?»
The Doctor and Melody burst out laughing, Really relived «Yeah! Yeah.» he agreed.
«I want chips.» Rose told him.
«Me too.» Melody said, raising her hand making the Doctor look at her and smile.
«Right then, before you get me and Melody back in that box, chips it is, and you can pay.» Rose told him.
«No money.» he told her, still smiling. The trio was completely grinning in happiness.
«What sort of date are you?» Rose asked. «Come on then, tightwads, chips are on me.» she told them and the Doctor smiled at her, delighted.
«We've only got five billion years till the shops close.» Melody joked then grabbed Rose's hand as the Doctor pulled her behind.
The trio walk together down the street laughing, all hand in hand. The Doctor holding tight Melody's while She held Rose's. Rose nuzzled her head into Melody's shoulder causing her to do the same against the Doctor, who just grinned down at them.
He wasn't alone anymore.
