Chapter 20~ The End of The World

Lizzie's pov:

«Right then, ladies, you tell me. Where do you want to go? Backwards or forwards in time. It's your choice. What's it going to be?» the Doctor, being lit in green light from the time rotor asked us. I was walked and stood next to Rose, the console in front of us.

I raised my hands in surrounding when he glanced at me. «I'm letting Rose Tyler here, decide.» I said so the Doctor moved his gaze on Rose.

«Forwards.» she challenged.

«How far?» the Doctor asked.

«One hundred years.» Rose replied, picking up a random number. The Doctor pulled a lever and turned a knob, the engines lurch then top after a few seconds and «There you go. Step outside those doors, it's the twenty second century.» he said grinning.

She scoffed in disbelief «You're kidding.»

«That's a bit boring, though, is it Doctor? Shall we go further?» I asked the Doctor, grinning.

He shrugged grinning «Fine by me.» he replied. And again, rolled the white knob, pushed and pulled a sticky thing and pushed a button.

«Ten thousand years in the future. Step outside, it's the year 12005, the new Roman Empire.» he told us.

«You think you're so impressive.» Rose said, teasingly. I chuckled.

«I am so impressive.» the Doctor protested.

«You wish.» Rose said.

«Just leave it Rose. He needs to have some illusions in life.» I told her, much to irritate him.

«Right then, young lady, you asked for it. I know exactly where to go.» he reversed up the engine, pumped a lever furiously «Hold on!» He shouted.

The TARDIS shook then, with a pinging noise, it stopped.

«Where are we?» Rose asked glancing first at me then at the Doctor, smiling excitedly. The both of us gestured towards the door.

«What's out there?» she asked. And again the both of us gestured the door. She ran outside. I looked up at the Doctor.

I held my hand out for him. «Shall we?» I asked with a smile.

He smiled back, then took my hand. I grinned like a child and the both of us followed Rose outside.

As we exited, we found ourselves in some kind of a wooden room. The Doctor left my hand and, sonicing a mechanism, opened the shutter of an enormous window. Meanwhile I walked down the stairs to reach Rose who was standing in front of it. Looking out at the planet under name Earth.
The Doctor soon reached us standing next to me.

«Think of it Rose, we spend all our time thinking about dying, like we're going to get killed by eggs or beef or global warming or asteroids... But we never take time to imagine the impossible... that maybe we survive.» I said, looking at my home planet, and knowing that now, just a few minutes later, I'll watch it burn.

«This is the year five point five slash apple slash twenty six. Five billion years in your future, and this is the day. -the Doctor looked at his watch- Hold on.»
The sun suddenly flared and turned red.

«This is the day the Sun expands.» he concluded.

I looked at Rose and smiled softly. «Welcome to the end of the world, Rose Tyler.»

«Shuttles five and six now docking. Guests are reminded that Platform One forbids the use of weapons, teleportation and religion. Earth Death is scheduled for fifteen thirty nine. Followed by drinks in the Manchester Suite.» we heard a computer saying while the three of us walked down a corridor.

«So, when it says guests, does that mean people?» Rose asked.

«Depends what you mean by people.» The Doctor replayed.

«I mean people. What do you mean?» she asked confused.

The Doctor and I grinned at her «Aliens.» we said together.

«What are they doing on board this spaceship? What's it all for?» she asked us.

«It's not really a spaceship, more like an observation deck. The great and the good are gathering to watch the planet burn.» the Doctor explained. He then used his sonic screwdriver on a wall panel.

«What for?» Rose asked.

«Fun.» he replied just as the door opened and we walked in. I flashed her a smile. A bit of an apologetic one.

We entered a large observation gallery.

«Mind you, when I said the great and the good, what I mean is, the rich.» the Doctor told us.

«But, hold on. They did this once on Newsround Extra. The sun expanding, that takes hundreds of years.» Rose said.

«Millions, but the planet's now property of the National Trust. They've been keeping it preserved.» he told her as we approached a big window.

«See down there?» He asked us pointing a finger on a tiny glint of light orbiting the Earth. «Gravity satellites holding back the sun.» he explained but I already knew that.

«The planet looks the same as ever. I thought the continents shifted and things.» Rose said while I peered out of the window at Earth.

«They did, and the Trust shifted them back. That's a classic Earth. But now the money's run out, nature takes over!» the Doctor explained.

«How long's it got?» This time I asked.

«About half an hour and then the planet gets roasted.» he told me and I nodded.

«Is that why we're here? I mean, is that what you do? Jump in at the last minute and save the Earth?» Rose asked grinning.

«I'm not saving it.» he told her.

«Time's up.» I added sadly, looking out of the window at the beautiful planet.

«But what about the people?» Rose asked.

«It's empty. They're all gone. No one left.» The Doctor told her. She looked out of the window, realization spearing across her face.

«Just Melody and I, then.» she said sadly.

Suddenly a blue-skinned person with golden slit eyes strides towards us.

«Who the hell are you?» he asked rudely.

«Oh, that's nice, thanks.» I sarcastically said, making the Doctor chuckle.

«But how did you get in? This is a maximum hospitality zone. The guests have disembarked. They're on their way any second now.» the blue man told us, irritated.

«That's me. I'm a guest. Look, I've got an invitation. -he said talking out the psychic paper- Look. There, you see? It's fine, you see? The Doctor plus two. I'm the Doctor, this is Rose Tyler and Melody-»

«-Smith.» I said, nodding.

«Yes, Melody Smith. They're my plus two. Is that all right?» he asked.

«Well... obviously.» the blue man said, and the Doctor and I grinned at him. «Apologies, et cetera. If you're on board, we'd better start. Enjoy.» he said, me nodding as a thank you, and walked off over to a lecturn.

«The paper's slightly psychic. It shows them whatever I want them to see. Saves a lot of time.» the Doctor told us and I pretended to be interested even flashing a smile.

«He's blue.» was instead what Rose commented.

«Yeah.» the Doctor confirmed.

«Okay...» Rose said and I gave her an encouraging pat on the shoulder. Some sort of a nice way to say 'Deal with it'.

«We have in attendance the Doctor, Melody Smith and Rose Tyler. Thank you. All staff to their positions.» the steward spoke through a microphone at the other end of the suite.

He clapped his hands and a lot of small and blue people started scurrying around. The staff, probably.

«Hurry, now, thank you. Quick as we can. Come along, come along. And now, might I introduce the next honoured guest? Representing the Forest of Cheam, we have trees, namely, Jabe, Lute and Coffa.» the steward said as a bark-skinned woman entered with two larger male escorts. The woman was made of wood.

«There will be an exchange of gifts representing peace. If you could keep the room circulating, thank you. Next, from the solicitors Jolco and Jolco, we have the Moxx of Balhoon.» the steward announced and another blue alien, this time mostly head and body, sitting on a transport pod came in. The Doctor smiled cheerfully looking at me as I did the same, while Rose was looking on bewildered.

«And next, from Financial Family Seven, we have the Adherents of the Repeated Meme.» he presented a group of black-robed bipeds. The Doctor chuckled at the look of Rose's face, don't even noticing he was holding my hand again.

«The inventors of Hypo-slip Travel Systems, the brothers Hop Pyleen. Thank you.» he said. Fur clad reptilians. The announcements of variations on the biped theme continued.

«Cal Spark Plug. Mister and Mrs Pakoo. The Ambassadors from the City State of Binding Light.»

The wood-woman then approached us. Either side of her, her companions were holding plant trays with little shoots in them.

«The Gift of Peace.» she said taking the plant and handing it to me «I bring you a cutting of my Grandfather.»

«Thank you!» I said cheerfully then giving it to the Doctor who passed it to Rose.

I gave him a look and he straight away understood what I meant «Yes, gifts... Er...» he cleared his throat starting feeling his jacket for something. Finding nothing, of course. An idea popped into my mind.

«He gives you in return air from his lungs.» I told her, folding my arms on my chest.

«Right!» he said then breathed gently on Jabe, who closed her eyes briefly.

«How... intimate.» Jabe said, dreamily.

I raised a brow «Really?»

«There's more where that came from.» the Doctor said flirtatiously. I tried to contain a chuckle although I was sure if a normal person would've looked at my face right now he would understand nothing. Rose and I had that sort of a look that is to be expected of someone who has just witnessed their companion flirting with a tree... Yeah...

«I bet there is.» she said and walked off.

The Doctor glanced at me with an amused smile and I finally let out that chuckle, nudging him in the the arm playfully.

«From the Silver Devastation, the sponsor of the main event, please welcome the Face of Boe.» the steward announced. A large glass case barely made it through the doorway. It contained a giant humanoid head with straggly hair and squinting eyes. I gasped silently.

«Jack.» I whispered to myself.

«Jack?» the Doctor questioned, frowning.

«Oh, a friend... of mine... Just came to mind... Good old Jackie.» I told him still in thoughts and refusing to look in his eyes. I hated lying to him. The Moxx of Balhoon then approached us.

«Moxx of Balhood.» I greeted and the Doctor smiled, moving his attention to him.

«My felicitations on this historical happenstance. I give you the gift of bodily salivas.» he said then spit, centering Rose's left eye.

I smacked my hand on my mouth to hid the laugh.

The Doctor laughed out a «Thank you very much.»

As the blue guy was liked off, and Rose rubbed the spit out of her eye, I approached the Doctor's ear and whispered. «I think he forgot to bring the gifts too.»

«Probably, yeah.» he agreed and the both of us giggled like two kids.

Next the Adherents of the Repeated Meme approached us.

«Ah! The Adherents of the Repeated Meme. I bring you air from my lungs.» the Doctor said and breathed heavily at them all, making me again put a hand over my mouth to hide the laugh.

«A gift of peace in all good faith.» one of them said, holding out a large silver egg, which I took and passed to the Doctor still smiling at the man. The Doctor threw it up in the air, caught it, and passed it to Rose again.

«And last but not least, our very special guest. Ladies and gentlemen, and trees and multiforms, consider the Earth below. In memory of this dying world, we call forth the last Human.» the steward said.

While the Doctor looked down at Rose to see her reaction, I watched a face in a piece of thin skin stretched in a rectangular frame being wheeled in by two men hidden in top-to-toe hospital whites. She looked like a vertical trampoline made of human skin with a lipstick. Ew.

«The Lady Cassandra O'Brien Dot Delta Seventeen!» the steward announced.

«Oh, now, don't stare. I know, I know it's shocking, isn't it? I've had my chin completely taken away and look at the difference. Look how thin I am.» Cassandra said.

«Yeah, just the chin.» I commented utterly shocked, while the Doctor laughed silently but heartily at Rose, who looked shocked. Well, I didn't blame her, that scene was really difficult to forget.

«I think I'll have nightmares.» I whispered to myself. The Doctor, hearing me, laughed even more.

«Thin and dainty. I don't look a day over two thousand. Moisturise me. Moisturise me.» Cassandra said and One of her attendants used a pump spray on her.

«Truly, I am the last Human.» Cassandra said while Rose creeped closer for a better look.
«My father was a Texan, my mother was from the Arctic Desert. They were born on the Earth and were the last to be buried in its soil.»

Rose walked around to the other side of Cassandra, probably to get a better view at her from all angels. I imagine how shocking it was, since Cassandra was completely flat.

«I have come to honour them and -Cassandra sniffed- say goodbye. Oh, no tears, -A bodyguard whipped her eyes- no tears. I'm sorry. But behold, I bring gifts. From Earth itself, the last remaining ostrich egg.»

One of the staff came in a displayed the egg to the room «Legend says it had a wingspan of fifty feet and blew fire from its nostrils.» Cassandra told us. I glanced At Rose who looked mildly confused. I chuckled at that, the Doctor and I standing there, arms folded on our chest and Cheshire-ish grins on our faces.

«Or was that my third husband?»

Rose and I rolled our eyes but the Doctor laughed. I smiled at him instead. He was so happy, almost like a little kid. And that's because he finally wasn't alone anymore.

«Who knows! Oh, don't laugh. I'll get laughter lines!» Cassandra said making me snort. She laughed and mumbled something to herself for a few seconds. Behind her a large jukebox was wheeled into the room.

«And here, another rarity. According to the archives, this was called an iPod. It stores classical music from humanity's greatest composers.» I glanced at Rose who looked amazed. «Play on!» Cassandra exclaimed.

One of the little attendants pressed a button, a 45 was selected and the strains of Tainted Love by Soft Cell rang out. I glanced at the Doctor only to see him bopping around appreciatively, his arms still folded. I explode in a laugh which caused me to bend over, keeping my arms folded.

«Refreshments will now be served. Earth Death in thirty minutes.» the steward announced. I returned to look at the Doctor who was grinning madly. I, grinning like a madman, glanced over at Rose only to see her running out.

My grin fell and so did the Doctor's. He grabbed my hand and pulled me behind himself, the both of us concerned about Rose. But we got stopped by Jabe just at the doors.

«Doctor?» she called. As he looked at her, she snapped a photo of him. «Thank you.» she thanked.

I pulled the Doctor behind again, proceeding on while Jabe went the other direction.

3 person pov:

Rose was sitting on the stairs, throwing the silver egg in the air and catching it.

«Earth Death in twenty five minutes.» the computer announced.

«Oh, thanks.» She said sarcastically.

She put the ball down instead turning her attention to the cutting of Jabe's grandfather. She picked it up.

«Hello. My name's Rose. That's a sort of plant. We might be related...» She said. Then suddenly realizing what She was doing she hurriedly put the plant down. «I'm talking to a twig.»

She didn't notice the silver egg behind her, opening.

[Gallery 15]

Lizzie/Melody dragged the Doctor down the hallway, stopping at the end. She noticed straight away the little assistants who were wheeling the TARDIS away.

«Oi you!» she shouted at them, then nudging the Doctor so he would see what she did. The Doctor followed her gaze.

«Now, careful with that! Park it properly! No scratches!» he warned.

One of little buddies walked up to them, squeaked at them, handed Melody a card and walked away again. She looked down at it and read out loud «Have A Nice Day.»

Melody looked the Doctor who glanced at the retreating staffed back as if he was completely off of his rocker. Melody chuckled at his look nudging him in the shoulder playfully. He smiled down at her.

She then put the card into her pocket and walked off, grabbing the Doctor's hand in the process and pulling him behind.

[Int. Viewing Gallery]

The spider that came out of the egg, was scanning Rose's hand but she was completely oblivious of that. It jumped and ran to the air vent when Melody's voice loaded scans through the door.

«Rose? Are you in there?» she called. The second later Melody dragged the Doctor in, by pulling him by his hand. She then left it and came to sit next to Rose

«Aye, aye.» The Doctor saluted with a grin as he sat on the other side of the stairs, opposite to Rose and Melody. «What do you think, then?» he asked, grinning.

«Great! Yeah... fine. Once you get past the slightly psychic paper...» Rose Said and the Doctor and Melody laughed. There was a short pause.

«They're just so alien.» she then told the Doctor. He started at her questioning while Melody grinned at the weirdness of the situation and lied down, putting her arms under her head using them as a pillow. «The aliens are so alien. You look at 'em... and they're alien.»

The Doctor looked slightly offended «Good thing I didn't take you to the Deep South.» the Doctor commented, making Melody grin slightly. She was just lying and observing the ceiling.

Rose looked over at him properly for the first time and, landing back on her arm, asked «Where are you from?»

That Melody's head shot up and look at the Doctor in concern. And slight panic. She knew the 11th Doctor would just tell it to her because a lot time passed from the war, but the 9th just lived it all! He wasn't ready to talk about it!

He looked forward, his jaw clenched «All over the place.»

«They all speak English.» Rose told him.

«No, you just hear English. It's a gift of the TARDIS.» he said lying down on his side too, while Melody looked up at the ceiling again, relived they changed the subject «The telepathic field, gets inside your brain and translates.»

«It's inside my brain?» Rose asked, slightly terrified.

«Well, in a good way.» the Doctor said.

«Isn't that just brilliant?» Melody asked, grinning.

Rose thought it differently «Your machine gets inside my head. It gets inside and it changes my mind, and you didn't even ask?» She asked colder, starting to get angry. Melody's grin fell as she now was afraid of the turn the conversation was taking.

«I didn't think about it like that.» the Doctor said, thrown.

«No! You were too busy thinking up cheap shots about the Deep South!» Rose said, angrily. Melody sat up straight, not at all liking her friend's behavior towards the Doctor. «Who are you, then, Doctor? What are you called? What sort of alien are you?»

«Rose.» Melody called warningly.

The Doctor meanwhile sat up straight too and looked away from Rose. «I'm just the Doctor.» he told her.

«From what planet?» Rose asked.

«Rose.» Melody said, now louder.

«Well, it's not as if you'll know where it is!» The Doctor replayed, slightly scoffing.

«Where are you from?!» Rose demanded.

«Rose stop. What does it even matter?» Melody asked, angry at Rose.

«Tell me who you are!» Rose demanded from the Doctor, ignoring Melody's statement.

«This is who I am, right here, right now, all right?! All that counts is here and now, and this is me.» he answered angrily.

«Yeah, and I'm here too because you brought me here, so just tell me!» Rose shouted. The Doctor got up, and walked down the steps away from her.

«Rose, you are wrong.» Melody told her, silently and calmly.

«Am I?!» Rose asked turning towards her. «Melody, you just met him this morning! Or the morning 5 billion years ago, but that's not the point, I still can't get used to this totally crazy thing. You just met him, you have no idea who he is and what intentions he has! D'you just go and trust him?!» Rose demanded.

Melody suddenly stood up, clenching her jaw. Anger flashed in her eyes and, for a second, she really scared Rose.

«Rose Tyler, don't you dare talking to him like that ever again.» she said, her jaw clenched tightly, but her voice low. «Don't you understand what he does yet? He saves people, he saves planets, universes! You and all the stupid people in that world just sit on the couch and stare at the tv all day, watching movies about aliens and all that stupid stuff. Don't even bothering to think that all that things are real. And that there is someone who defends you day and night.

And it's that man. His name's the Doctor. Just the Doctor, there is nothing else needed, that's his name. That man who doesn't ask anything back. That man who now stands right there. -she pointed at him- And, Rose Taylor, are you just so blind?

Don't you see how hurt he is? How alone he is feeling? Why instead, of making him all of those questions, you don't go to him and encourage him? Because he needs no thank you, Rose... He needs love.» she told Rose. By the time she finished Rose felt guilty. She looked at Melody, guilt drawn in her eyes.

«Go.» Melody told her. Rose nodded. Then stood up and started making her way down the stairs and to the man in front of the big observation window, standing there his hands in his pockets, his mind somewhere else.

«Oh, and Rose.» Melody called making Rose spin around and look at her. She looked in Melody's eyes and saw she was sad and... Hurt?

«I trust that man with my life.» she then said, her voice cracking with hurt a bit, almost unable to be heard. But Rose heard it.

She noted to herself to ask Melody about her and the Doctor sometime when the two of them would be alone.

Rose nodded, then turned around and walked down the stairs.

«Earth Death in twenty minutes. Earth Death in twenty minutes.» the computer said.

«All right... As my mate Shareen says... don't argue with the designated driver...» Rose said as she reached the Doctor.

The Doctor, with his back to her, smiled at that. Melody, noticing him smiling, smiled too. Seeing that man happy made her happier than everything.

Rose took out her mobile phone from her pocket. «Can't exactly call for a taxi... There's no signal. We're out of range. Just a bit!» she said.

«Tell you what...» the Doctor took the phone from her. «With a little bit of jiggery pokery...» he took the back off the phone.

«Is that a technical term, jiggery pokery?» Rose asked.

«Yeah, I came first in jiggery pokery. What about you?» he asked her.

«No, I failed hullabaloo.» Rose said, making Melody smile again. She stood up in the middle of the stairs, her arms folded on her chest, watching the couple.

«Ooooh.» the Doctor fitted another battery in Rose's phone then gave it back to her.«There you go.»

Rose took it and looked at him uncertain. He nodded at her. She looked down at the phone and got her mom's number onto the screen. Then she put the phone to her ear. It rang.

«Hello?» Jackie answered.

«Mom?» Rose asked uncertain.

«Oh, what is it

[The Tyler flat]

Jackie was at home, emptying the washing machine. «What's wrong? What have I done now? Oh, this red top's falling to bits.»

[View Gallery]

«You should get your money back. Go on.» Jackie said in the phone.

[The Tyler flat]

«There must be something, you never phone in the middle of the day.» she said into the phone.

[View Gallery]

Rose just laughed.

«What's so funny?» Jackie asked.

«Nothing!» Rose resonated «You alright, though?»

[The Tyler flat]

«Yeah! Why wouldn't I be?» Jackie asked, confused at her daughter's behavior.

[View Gallery]

«What day is it?» Rose asked, still stunned.

[The Tyler flat]

«Wednesday, all day. You got a hangover?» Jackie asked.

[View Gallery]

«Oh, I tell you what. Put a quid in that Lottery syndicate. I'll pay you back later.» Jackie answered.

«Yeah, um, I was just calling 'cos I might be late home.» Rose told her.

«Is there something wrong?» Jackie asked.

«No! I'm fine! Top of the world!» Rose smiled and Melody and The Doctor laughed silently.

Jackie put the phone down. Rose lowered the phone, stunned.

Melody chuckled. «Think that's amazing, you want to see the bill.» she told Rose, making the Doctor laugh not turning to glance at her. Melody wasn't offended, though.

«That was five billion years ago. So...» Rose said, realization drawing on her face. «...She's dead now. Five billion years later, my mom's dead.»

«Bundle of laughs, you are.» The Doctor said.

Suddenly the ship shuddered.

«That's not supposed to happen.» a rather confused Doctor said, Melody having the same exact expression on her face.
