Chapter 13~ Flesh and Stone

Guys, I just found out I was spelling Elizabeth's nickname wrong. It actually is written 'Lizzie'.😱
So, yeah, I'll correct it in the past chapters. And one more thing before I start.

Please comment if you like this story and you want me to continue. I don't have many likes and comments and I just wanna know if people actually read what I write. Please comment.

I groaned as I hit the ground. Or at least it felt like ground. A metallic ground. Moments later the light turned on and I blinked some times to get used to it.

The Doctor jumped on his feet straight away «Up, look up!» and started racing back and forth. I rubbed my head that hurt like I hit (in this case) a metallic ground.

«Do you actually feel pain sometimes?» I asked him sarcastically as he raced pass me, still on the floor. He ignored me completely making me throw a glare at him.

«Everyone alright?» I called for the others. A few groans and laments followed.

«Okay.» I mumbled under my nose, nodding to myself.

«What happened?» Amy inquired, getting up.

«We jumped.» River and I said at the same time, for then glance at each other. I gave her a ear-to-ear smile while she shot me a little one.

«Jumped where?» a still very confused Amy asked.

«Emm... Up?» I sarcastically asked. I slowly got up, still groaning.

«Up, up, look up.» the Doctor said racing past me that fast that he made me loose equilibrium and I fell back on the ground, this time hitting my butt. I threw him a glare but he didn't seem to notice I even fell.

«Where are we?» Amy asked.

«Exactly where we were.» River explained again while I got up again and was staring the 'ceiling' with big interest. I stared at it for so long that my neck started aching.

«Move your feet.» The Doctor said to Amy, and she obeyed. He kneeled down taking out his screwdriver and sonicing the indentation.

«Doctor, what am I looking at? Explain.» Amy demanded.

He raised up on his feet. «Oh, c'mon Amy, think! The ship crashed with the power still on, yeah, so what else is still on?» with that said, he kneeled down again.

«The artificial gravity. One good Jump and we fell. Shot out the grab globe to give us an updraft and here we are!» he explained.

I glanced on the Doctor and the others with a huge grin «Look at me everyone, I'm Spider-Man!» I laughed. But no one did. Some of them just threw me some disapproving looks, Amy and the Doctor ignored me and River just faked a smile. The one of a 'shut-up-you're-making-fool-of-yourself' one.

I dropped my smile and my enthusiasm. «Pff. Boring muggles.» I scoffed, walking to the rest of the group with a pout expression.

This time the Doctor chuckled keeping his glance down.

~Skip time and useless bubble~

«Amy, Lizzie, when the lights go out, the wheel will release. Four turns clock wise.» the Doctor yelled to Amy and I.

«Ten.» we said at the same time, not knowing it.

«No four.» he corrected us.

«Yeah, we heard you.» Amy spoke while I just stood there still. What just happened?

~~~Skiiiiip~~~
The Doctor opened the doors to reveal a huge forest. Everybody stared at it in surprise while I grinned. Just grinned in amazement.
«But... Trees, on a spaceship?» Amy asked, but I couldn't tell if it was enthusiasm or disbelief, because I was turned with my back to her.
I smiled. «I guess anytime soon we'll see dinosaurs on some of them.» I said under my breath. I turned around only to see the Doctor looking out on the forest with amazement.
His gaze met mine and he grinned. «Oh, they're more than trees. They're so much more than trees.» he said answering to Amy, but looking at me.
I understood what I had to do. I ran to one of them and opened it. The inside of the tree was full of cables. Blue, red, green, all shinning brightly.
I stepped away to show the others. The Doctor glanced at Amy «Have we impressed you yet, Amy Pond?» he smiled.
The fact that he said we made my smile grow wider.
Amy smiled too. «Seven.» the word left my mouth involuntary, and so did Amy's.
The Doctor frowned. «What?»
I raised a brow back. «What are you talking about?» I asked.
«You said seven, both of you.» he said looking at me then at Amy in concern but also in seriousness. I would've given everything I had to see him smile in that moment.
«No, we didn't.» Amy responded at my place.
«Yes, you did.» River stepped in. A bit of panic spread in my whole body while the Doctor stared in Amy's eyes. I lowered my glance at the floor thinking.
Could the angel be inside of you? A distant voice asked in my head and understood straight away that was true.
Suddenly the Doctor jumped over the console, landing on the floor and running to me. He took my hands and, as soon as I raised my eyes, he stared in them.
I did know why he was doing it but, in that moment, I thought of something. How was it for him? How was it seeing my eyes everyday. The eyes of the woman he loved who died. Did he feel pain when he did? 'Blue like the TARDIS', was what the Master said, but why? And when would we meet?
Will the Doctor find out about the watch by then?
«Doctor? Hello? Angel Bob here, sir.» the voice in the radio said interrupting me from my train of thoughts. The Doctor seemed to wake up from a daydreaming too, and I could imagine what was it about.
He blinked a few times glancing away. Then, leaving my hands, ran to the radio.
«Ah, yes, Angel Bob. How's life? Sorry, bad subject.» The Doctor said with a smile trying to eye everyone in the room, but his eyes were fixed on me. I chuckled then covering my mouth with both hands.
«The Angels were wondering what you hope to achieve.» Bob said.
«We're not trying to achieve anything.» The Doctor responded into the radio. «We've got comfy chairs, did I mention?»
«We have no need of comfy chairs.»
«Ha, I made him say comfy chairs.» the Doctor said, making me and Amy laugh. Sometimes he was just such a 'Kid' I mouthed to him.
He smirked 'I try' was his answer then he winked at me, which made me roll my eyes but blush like a madman.
«Six.» Amy and I suddenly said.
«Okay, Bob, enough that, here's what I want to know: what have you done to Amy and Lizzie?» the Doctor asked seriously.
«There's something in their eyes.» Angel Bob answered making a shiver ran down my spine.
«What is it?» the Doctor asked, his glance now fixed in space, staring in nothing as he jumped up on his feet.
The next to words made my eyes widen and my smile disappear completely.
«We are.» Bob replayed.
Everyone stayed silent of a second. If it would've been a movie, this would be the moment of Steven Moffat's dramatic music, but it wasn't.
«Doctor what is he talking about?» Amy asked, slight panic in her voice. «Doctor, we are-»
«Five.» we said together. Me, staring at the floor. At nothing in particular, actually.
«I mean, we're-» Amy tried, failing.
«Five.» we said again.
«Fine! We're fine!» Amy insisted. I slowly raised my eyes from the floor to meet the Doctors gaze.
«What are we doing?» I asked him. He was staring at me in concern.
«You're both counting.» River answered at his place.
I spun my head to meet her gaze.
«Counting?» I asked as panic started to grow.
«You're counting down from ten.» the Doctor answered making me look at him again.
But then something came into my mind making me slightly chuckle. The Doctor stared at me inquiry.
«It would've be a funny coincidence if we would count down from eleven, don't you think?» I questioned him.
His eyes sparkled in amusement and soon his corner of the lips curved into a slight smirk.
But then I looked up and froze. «Doctor.» I said as my eyes widened in fear.
«So what are you?» He asked before following my gaze and see what I saw. The crack in the wall.
«Oh, that's bad. That's extremely very not good.» he stared at the crack while I didn't know if I should follow his gaze or look at him.
«Do. Not. Blink.» he said but I think he was talking more to himself.
«Are we dead?» I asked hopeless.
He thought a bit «Pretty much, yeah.»
I sighed rolling my eyes «You know, you really should learn how to reassure people.» I told him.
~🚶🚶🏻🚶🏼🚶🏽🚶🏾🚶🏿~
We ran in The forest as the Angels chased us. The Doctor remained back despise my protests. I tried to stay with him but some of the military-boys dragged me away.
Suddenly my legs started shaking and a sharp pain shot through my head. As sharp as the Angels nails and teeth. Like something was making it's way in my mind and slowly killing me.
River noticed me and stopped «Lizzie, Amy, what's wrong?» he asked concerned as Amy stopped too.
I opened my mouth to reply but only one word escaped my lips «Four.» the second later I felt the pain shoot through my left side and a realized I fell on the ground.
River was by my side straight away. My eyes were open wide, but I didn't see anything except of a blurry mix of colors.
I noticed one red blur lying on a rock probably, and I understood it was Amy.
«Med scan, now!» River shouted but it was a distant shout in my head. I could imagine someone handing it to her as she scanned me.
«Dr. Song, we can't stay here. We have to move.» I heard someone say and I realized it was father Octavian.
Well, thank you very much, first you flirt with me then you want to leave me to die, I thought. Plus we couldn't leave the Doctor.
«N-no... D-Doctor...» I whispered shakily. I wasn't leaving him. Even if that meant I was going dying.
River, luckily, heard me «We wait for the Doctor.» River told them, then placing a hand on my arm.
«Our mission is to make this place safe and neutralize the Angels. Until that happens-» he started but River cut him sharply, while I was shaking my head with the only forces I had left.
«Father Octavian, when the Doctor's in the room, your one mission is to keep him alive long enough to get everyone else home. And trust me, it's not easy. Now if he's dead back there, I'll never forgive myself and would not be ever again able to look in the eyes of my best friend, and trust me, I would rather die than disappoint her and her husband. Or my husband. He would maybe forgive me for that eventually, but I never would. And if he's alive, I'll never forgive him. And Doctor, you're standing right behind me, aren't you?»
«Oh, Yeah.» was what he answered with a cheeky grin. Or at least that was what I imagined him doing. River turned around to face him «I hate you.»
«No, you don't.»
I really much wanted to roll my eyes at them. They were very much like an old married couple. Maybe the future one cause you know, with all this timey-wimey thing it's difficult to know things for sure.
He kneeled down next to me. «Hey, stupid.» he said caressing my hair gently.
I smiled despise the pain. «Hey...» I said, my voice shaky as I did.
«Lizzie, listen to me, you have to fight it. Please promise me you will.» he whispered, taking my hand in his.
A tear slid down my cheek. «It hurts.» I whispered.
«I know.» he gently said. Then placed a kiss to my hand. «But you have to try. Do it for me.» he said.
Ignoring the sharp pain, I nodded. He kissed my forehead and stood up.
«Bishop, the Angels are in the forest.» he said but I couldn't see what he was doing. An image of an angel was jumping in my eyes. I shivered violently.
«Somebody lay Lizzie on the rock!» River shouted, indicating the rock Amy was on. A minute later someone lifted me up and, the minute after that, I felt it coldness under my body. I curled up a ball still with my eyes wide.
«We need visual contact on every line of approach.» Father Octavian said.
«How did you get past them?» River questioned the Doctor.
«Found a crack in the wall and told them it was the end of the universe.» he answered.
«What was it?» Amy asked.
«The end of the universe. Let's have a look then.» he replayed then took the scan and checked it.
«What's wrong with us?» Amy asked speaking for us both.
«Nothing, you're fine.»
«Everything, you're dying.» the Doctor hurried to correct River who spat «Doctor!» at him. I shakily sighed.
«Yes, you're right, if we lie to her, she'll get all better! Right. Amy! Lizzie. what's the matter with them? Something's in their eye. What does that mean? Doesn't mean anything.» he said kneeling in front of me.
«Doctor.» I let out.
«Busy.»
«Scared!»
«Of course, you're dying, shut up.»
Even if I couldn't see him goodly, I pointed a warning finger on him «Don't you dare ever 'shut up' me again, Mister.»
«You're right, I'm sorry.» he said, grabbing my hand mid air and placing a kiss on the back of it, then carefully rubbing circles on it with his thumb.
«Okay, let him think.» River stepped in.
He stood up, after lying my hand carefully beside my head. «What happened? They stared at the Angel, they looked into the eyes of an angel for too long...»
«Sir! Angel incoming!» a cleric shouted.
«And here!» another one called.
«Keep visual contact, don't let them move!» Father Octavian ordered them.
The Doctor, meanwhile, paced and slapped sides of his head. «Come on, come on, wakey, wakey! They watched an Angel climb out of the screen. They stared at the Angel and...and...»
I thought of it too. I thought of the terrible imagine that I was seeing. I stared at his eyes. We did. Think, Lizzie think. The Angel was creeping me out but then it hit me.
«Doctor.» I called.
«Not now, Lizzie.» he said walking in front of me back and forth.
«No, listen. D'you remember what you told us?»
He stopped, looking at me. I looked at him. I didn't know if I was looking the wrong way but I didn't care.
«The Angel of it self becomes itself an angel. What if...»
«A living image in a human mind. We stare at them to stop them getting closer, we don't even blink and that's exactly what they want, cos as long as our eyes are open, they can climb inside. There's an Angel in their mind!» he said all quickly only then understanding what he said and covering his mouth with his hands.
I nodded swallowing. I was afraid as hell but tried still to look calm. «Three. Doctor, it's coming. I can feel it. We're going to die!» Amy said making panic slightly.
«Please just shut up, I'm thinking. Now counting, what's that about?»
I took the radio from his hands ignoring his protests and spoke in in «Bob, it's Lizzie, why are they making us count?»
«To make you afraid, ma'am.» Bob answered.
«Don't call me ma'am. Makes me feel older.» I said in the radio, rocking back and forth on the rock with a little smile. I didn't even notice I was sitting up straight now.
«As you wish, Miss Elizabeth
«Better.» I smirked to myself. «Anyway, I got that point, but why?»
«For fun
This one made me infuriate. I growled in frustration and threw the radio away. I could feel everyone's eyes on me.
«Don't the Angels suppose to be good ones and the devils the bad? I mean they also say 'on the side of the Angels'.» I said sighing in frustration.
The Doctor chuckled. Suddenly I heard the crack of a broken branch.
~~~~

«She stopped breathing!» River said looking at me shocked. And that was true, I wasn't breathing. I could feel myself already gasping for air but what I did was remain still.

The Doctor kneeled next to me «Close your eyes, both of you.» he then said.

«No, no I don't want to.» Amy protested.

«Good, because that's not you, that's the Angel inside you, it's afraid! Do it! Close your eyes!» he told us but I couldn't. I shook my head slowly, dark spots dancing all around me.

«Doctor she has seconds.» River panicked.

The Doctor kneeled down in front of me. «Lizzie, if you can hear me, close your eyes. It will help I promise.» he told me.

I smirked in my head then opened my mouth only to slowly say «Rule number one.» I reminded him.

He shut his eyes close in frustration of course blaming himself for everything. He raised his hands like if he wanted to hit the rock but then softly dropped them and opened his eyes to look at me. «Elizabeth, you need to listen to me. You need to believe me. You need to stay. With me. I need you here. Come on, I know you can do it. You need to close your eyes. Smith, just close your eyes.» he said softly.

A single tear rolled down from my eye, because of the effort. Then I squeezed my eyes shut.

«She's normalizing! You did it! You did it!» River said as the scan biped. The Doctor sighed in relief. Then he placed a soft kiss on my forehead and caressed my hair several times.

«Sir? Two more incoming.» someone called.

«Three more over here!» another one did.

I heard River put her scanner back.

«Still weak, dangerous to move her.» she said.

I heard a moving behind me and I understood Amy sat up.

«So, can I open my eyes now?» she asked.

«Amy, listen to me. If you open your eyes now for more than a second, you will die. The Angel is still inside you. We haven't stopped it, we've just sort of...paused it. You've used up your countdown. You cannot open your eyes.» the Doctor said moving next to her.

I tried slowly to sit up, but failed and was about to fall from the rock but someone coughed me.

«Thanks.» I mumbled.

«You're welcome.» Rivers voice softly responded. I smiled at her. She was really nice to me and I appreciated that.

«Doctor, we're too exposed here. We have to move on.» father Octavian said.

The Doctor straightened, or at least that was what I thought he did. The only thing I could see was the darkness.

Dark all around me. I always have been scared of dark, that since I was a kid. And I always fought it in attempt to become immune to it forever. And it worked, but now my fear of the dark was mixed to the fear to die.

A couple of days ago I wasn't scared of death. Everyone has to die one day, I loved living my the life at the moment, not thinking about the future. Until now. Cause this time was different. I didn't want to die and leave the Doctor, the TARDIS, Amy... I didn't want to disappoint them.

«We're exposed everywhere, and Lizzie and Amy can't move, and anyway, that's not the plan.» the Doctor interrupted my express of thoughts.

«There's a plan?» I asked as River sat next to me and Amy, comforting us both.

I could feel the Doctor turning to look at me. «I don't know yet, I haven't finished talking.» I rolled my closed eyes but still smirked. «Right! Father, you and your Clerics will stay here, look after Amy and Lizzie. If anything happens to me them, I'll hold each of you personally responsible, twice. River, you and me, we're going to find the Primary Flight Deck which is...» I hear him licking his finger and hold it up to test the air. «a quarter mile straight ahead. We'll stabilise the wreckage. Stop the Angels, and cure Lizzie and Amy.» he said.

«How?» River and I asked together.

«I'll do a thing.»

«What thing?» we asked still at the same time.

He remained silent for a bit, probably thinking of a good remark. Nevertheless he didn't find it «I don't know, it's a thing in progress. Respect the thing. Moving out!»

I laughed slightly while River patted my back like to say 'tell me about it' and stood up.

«Doctor, I'm coming with you. My Clerics can look after Miss Pond and Miss Lizzie. These are my best men, they'd lay down their lives in her protection.» father Octavian stepped in.

«I don't need you.» the Doctor snapped, the bishop still now in his sympathy since we met. I wonder if it's because he flirted with me...

«I don't care. Where Dr. Song goes, I go.» he said. I heard footsteps and someone moving to Father's side. Probably River.

The Doctor stared at them. «What?» he asks looking at them. I rolled my eyes smirking. This was so... Ten-ish. «You two engaged or something?» he asked them.

«Yes, in a manner of speaking. Marco, you're in charge till I get back.» the bishop tells and four feet start walking in the other way. River and he.

«Sir!» Marco calls.

«Doctor... Please, can't I come with you?» Amy asked hopefully.

«You'd slow us down, Miss Pond.» Father Octavian said.

«Well, you'd really speed her up.» I remarked now the bishop off of my 'sympathy' list. First he flirts with me while he's engaged to River, then he 'insults' Amy.

I felt someone sitting next to me and I imagined it was the Doctor. «You two will be safer here. We can't protect you on the move. I'll be back for you soon as I can. I promise.» he said.

«You always say that.» Amy sadly said.

«And he always comes back.» I said turning to Amy and giving her a smile even though I couldn't see her.

«Exactly.» he said and I could imagine him smirking. It was a sad smirk though. Then he stood up. «Good luck everyone. Behave. Do not let these girls open their eyes. And keep watching the forest. Stop those Angels advancing. Amy, Lizzie, later.» he tapped me and Amy one our heads. «River, going to need your computer.» and he walked off.

«Yeah... Later.» Amy said. As he did, I slid down the rock and on the ground, crossing my legs and playing with the grass nearby.

Suddenly I heard footsteps that came over to Amy. I couldn't hear what that someone said but then suddenly, that someone's hands covered mine.

«Lizzie.» the Doctors soft voice said. I relaxed under his touch but frowned. Wasn't he supposed to leave? «You need to start trusting me, it's never been more important.» he said.

It took me a moment but then I answered «How can I, if you never tell me the truth. You never tell the truth to anyone, thinking you are protecting them.» I said.

«If I always told you the truth, I wouldn't need you to trust me. Plus, I do protect you in a way.» he said.

I smiled but shook my head no, freeing my hand from hers and covering his hands with mine. «No, Doc you're not. You think you are. But sometimes... You just need to trust them. You need to tell them the truth no matter how bad is it.»

He smirked as I said that. «And yet when I told you, you were dying some minutes ago you said I needed to learn how to comfort people.» he said.

«And yet you remember it. Even though it's been quite a while for you now, am I right?» I asked with a small smile on my lips. Realization hit him. Realization that, as I placed my hands on top of his, I felt his jacket under my touch, which he hadn't had on before.

After a long pause, in which he took my hands and I was rubbing circles on them with my thumb, he said «Elizabeth you have to promise me something.»

I nodded. «Whatever you want.»

He hesitated for a moment. «Promise me you'll never leave me. Promise you'll always stay by my side, no matter what we're facing. Cause I, He, -he said momentally taking his hand out of mine to indicate the other Doctor probably, to then take my back and rub his thump on it carefully- he needs you, Lizzie. There will be times you'll want to leave him and go away, never wanting to do nothing with him anymore, but promise me you won't.» he said hopefully.

I hesitated for a second but then smiled. «I would never. You would be lost without your genius.» I said grinning.

He grinned too. «Yes, I would. So lost...» he laughed slightly. I smiled. I was dying from seeing him. Suddenly he lifted my hands up to his lips and placed a long kiss on them. I could feel something happened. Something would've happened in the future. Something bad.

And that made me concerned. But I would never leave him. I would never leave the Doctor.

As he pulled back, still resting far an inch from my hands, I could feel his hot breath on my hands and it made me shiver.

He took out a hand from mine at put it on my cheek, brushing down hair from it. «Take care of them, Lizzie. My life and the life of the people you'll find out to care about, is in your hands.» he said.

I nodded one single time.

With that he planted a kiss on my forehead and disappeared. I didn't even need to call him to prove my theory, because I knew he was gone. And I also knew that, that man. That madman with a blue box, traveling in space with companions for over a hundred years, wasn't getting rid of me anytime soon.
