Chapter 45: The Signal Link

Ells' POV
"Alright guys, we'll wake up first thing in the morning. Simon, how close are we from Ells' father?" Violet asked, and she laid down on the ground, looking up at the stars with me.

"We're at least one third of the way there. We made a lot of progress today. And we only traveled for 7 hours!" He said, his eyes glowing.

"Wait. What if somebody tries to, you know, kill us while we are sleeping?" Hunter asks, getting ready to go to sleep.

"Don't worry. I... can't exactly sleep. I'll watch for anything that comes in our way. At least, if Ells gives me permission to." He said, looking at me, as I get ready to go to sleep as well.

"You don't need to ask permission, Simon. Of course you can." I said, as he smiled brightly. I think he liked that answer.

"Thank you, Ells! I'm going to go now!" He said, waving bye to us, as he ran off into the woods.

"He has so much energy..." Dimitry said to us. Then, he yawned really loudly, causing all of the rest of us to yawn as well. Then, we laughed a little at what just happened, before settling off the bed, staring off at the night sky.

Simon's POV
Wow! Things have just been getting better and better! I mean, the situation we're in right now sucks. But, so far, Ells has been exactly like Mr. Ender described her! Nice, caring, but has her limits...

The four guardians though. Completely different description! They don't seem as bad as I thought. I wonder why Mr. Ender asked me not to bring them with me...

To them, it didn't sound like staying awake 24/7 was common around here. I mean, duh! Simon! Your a robot! You don't have flesh and bones. You have computers and machinery. You were programmed to do this.

But, something, in the back of my mind, told me that... this wasn't right. I'm not sure what it could be, but, something, just felt off.

All of a sudden, I felt something. Like a wave of electricity going through my body. I looked up. There wasn't any lighting. What could it be?

That's when my robotic memory clicked. I was getting a signal from the other side.

Sometimes, I would get a signal from the other side, telling me a new assignment, or updating me on info that has happened without me being there. Even though I had to leave the comfort of the other side to do this mission, it is definitely worth it.

The antenna on top of my head extended, as I retrieve the signal. My left, red eye turned bright blue, as a projection of BCC-27 appeared before me.
