CHAPTER TWELVE

EMMA'S POV
He pulls over. When I try to open the door, he stops me and goes around a second time to open it. The cold air sends shivers through my skin as I step out. I wrap my hands around my shoulders trying to create as much warmth as I can.
"Jacket?" He asks already pulling it off.
"Who are you and what have you done to  Mason" I say, taken aback by his sudden change in behaviour.
"What can I say? You bring the best out of me" he answers winking, and attempts to secure his jacket on my shoulders, I stop him with my hands."Nevermind, I'll manage"
"Suit yourself" he shrugs and puts his jacket back on.
"Such a gentleman" I roll my eyes and keep walking. He could have at least asked a second time, not that I would have accepted anyways.
As I step in, I instantly breath out in relief from the warm atmosphere. I walk to the usual table I and the girls  sit at and feel kind of guilty I'm here with him and not them. Sasha comes to our table with two glasses of water, beaming at me.
"Emma, how are you dear?"
"I'm good thanks. How about you Sasha? You didn't get into more trouble when I left right?" I say a little worried.
"How could i when you were such a huge help, what can I get you? It's on the house."
"I'll have a hamburger, fries at the side and a cup of hot chocolate, and please let me pay" she tries to resist and I give the most determine look I can muster.
Sighing in defeat, she writes it down and turns to Mason. Her eyes widen a bit as though she was just noticing his presence.
"Mason"
"Sasha" They share a look of familiarity.
"Your usual?" She says already writing not waiting for his reply. But he replies anyways.
"You know it" she gives us one final smile and goes back inside.
"Your guys are friends?" I say in disbelief.
"Jealous?" He smirks as he takes a sip of water, might be the cold talking but he looked so elegant as he handled the glass with utmost care.
"You realise she's at least nine years older" I retort.
"That has never stopped me before"
I cringe at his implications. "What I'm confused about is why you would let her get in trouble for something you were responsible for" he literally ran out.
"Are you still upset about that?"
"Maybe I wouldn't be if you apologise"
"Why would I when it wasn't my fault?" The anger of that day resurfaces and I resist the urge to smash my glass on his face.
"it wasn't mine either but at least I stopped to help"
"God forbid you let me forget about it" he says rolling his eyes. Before I get the chance to reply Sasha comes with our food. Dropping my burger, fries and hot chocolate in front of me and Mason's diet coke and salad in front of him. I try to hold in my laugh as we thank her, actually I thank her while Mason just nods at her.
"Enjoy" she says winking at me and walks away.
"You take salad and diet coke?" I say not trying to hide my amusement.
"Some of us have to stay fit" he defends sending me a glare. I raise my hands up in mock surrender. It makes sense as he's on the team but being on the team didn't stop Tyler from eating a bunch of stuff in my house. Did he do it just to be polite? Either that or Mason must take basketball really seriously.
"You should try it, you could really use it" he says his tune a little sharp. His words stung more than I'd like to admit. My body is a very sensitive topic that I was already conscious of, I didn't need anyone else to rub it in. He notices the hurt in my face and start to say something but at this point, I couldn't care less what he was about to say.
"Emma, I didn't......" but I silence him with my hands.
"Let's just get this over with." I mutter under gritted teeth. Pushing my food aside, I take out all the things I'd need to tutor. He seems like he has something more to say but is silenced by my hard stare. Sighing he takes out his books too.
So much for Mason not being so bad.

*****
I stuff all of my books back into my bag as well as the food I had ordered seeing as I didn't have the chance to eat them. The only thing I had was the hot chocolate. I don't say a word to Mason as I take my leave. When he sees me packing, he starts dumping things into his bag in a hurry.
"Em...." i start walking away not giving him  a chance to speak. I am immediately welcomed with the cold air again. I keep on walking towards the road seeing as I would be taking the bus.
I don't see Mason and I don't care, he should have gotten the idea that I didn't want to speak to him. I was very silent when I tutored as I was extremely mad, I made sure not to be involved in a conversation that wasn't math related.
Though I was mad at Mason, I tried as much as I could to help him understand but it wasn't a bed of roses. I had to repeat the same thing a million times before he got it and shortly after he forgets it again. It was the hardest tutoring session I've ever gone through, if I wasn't so mad at him, I would have felt bad for him.
"Emma! Emma wait!" Mason says coming after me, I don't bother increasing my pace cos I know he'll catch up anyway. All I can do is hope the bus comes on time.
"Emma" he says finally reaching, he grabs my arm gently forcing me to face him. I give him a hard stare looking at his hands on my arm, effectively making him drop it.
"What do you want?"
"Why are you being like this? There isn't any need to overreact" He says like I'm acting like a little kid. This douche freaking body shamed me and thinks I'm overreacting.
"You're unbelievable" I say very annoyed and continue walking, where is this damn bus? He comes to my front stopping me from walking.
"Just let me drive you, it's not safe for you to be out on your own this late" I look at his face for the slightest sign of concern or remorse but he has a blank expression on.
"I don't want your pity or concern, I can take care of myself." At that moment the bus stops, it couldn't have come at a more perfect time. I get in not giving him another glance.
I step out of the bus and walk quickly to my house. I open the door and I'm greeted by silence. It's not that late, I guess they must have been tired. I make for the kitchen and see Max working on something from school, i take a can of orange juice and pull out the food from my bag silently, deciding not to bother Max. He looks at me expectedly like his waiting for me to do something but all I do is raise my brows at him questioningly, he sighs and goes back to his work looking sad.
Being in a bad mood doesn't stop me from worrying about my baby brother so I walk towards him and squat to his sitting height.
I ruffle his hair and he slaps it away sharply not in his normal gentle way, confirming that something was really wrong.
"Max what's wrong?" He doesn't say anything and pretends to focus on the paper In front of him.
"I know you're not actually reading that" I say rolling my eyes.
"Since when do you care?" He says and I stare at him in shock.
"What's that suppose to mean?" i ask but he still doesn't say anything, huffing loudly.
"Max." I say impatiently, he looks like he isn't going to ever speak up but just when I decide to give him some space he speaks.
"You don't care about me anymore, up unto a day ago I was the only man in your life" if he wasn't so upset I would have laughed at him referring to himself as a man.
"But now that you have that Tyler guy, I won't be your number one man anymore, you didn't even ruffle my hair when you came in like you always do" he says looking very hurt. So that's why he was acting all grumpy when Tyler was here.
"Max I thought you didn't like it when I ruffle your hair, you always slap my hands away"
"It's not just about the hair. I..." He stops not sure how to express himself. I lift his face so our eyes would meet, they told everything he's words couldn't. I smile sadly and wrap my hands around him, he resists at first but eventually sinks into the hug.
"You can never be replaced, you'll always be my number one, baby brother. You're stuck with me." I say cupping his face in my palm.
"I'm not a baby" he says fighting a smile, I ruffle his hair and just like that we were back to normal.
"Mom kept some leftover soup in the fridge for you" Max informs but after the last soup incident, I'm not exactly ecstactic.
"I'll pass" I say digging into my burger.
"Mom and dad sleeping?" I ask Max who has now abandoned what he had been working on.
"Date night" he says stealing a fry from my plate, I send him a glare and he shrugs in response.
"On a Wednesday?" It's strange that they left Max all by himself, plus date nights are usually on Fridays, that made better sense.
"They're trying to enjoy their last night in town. They're leaving for Florida tomorrow"
"What? Why?" I say shifting the fries towards Max.
"Aunt Laura is due Sunday and she wants mom to be there when the baby comes." Aunt Laura is my mom's younger sister and my favourite aunt, sometimes she gets me more than my own mom.
"Wow that's amazing. If she's due Sunday that means the baby will be born on valentines day." I say in excitement already thinking of baby names.
"Let me guess, you're already thinking of baby names" Max teases.
"You know me all too well baby brother." I say pinching his cheek. He wiggles out of my graps.
"I was thinking Love, valentine is all about love."
"Nah, how about Cupid?" Max retorts and I drop my head on my palm.
"That doesn't make sense, how about valentine?"
"Cupid represent love, valentine, love" he says drawing out the last two words. I give him a blank look and he folds his hands.
"You think you can do any better?"
"As a matter of fact I can"
"Yeah right" he says rolling his eyes in disbelief.
"Better be nice to me, with mom and dad leaving I'll be in charge." I say smugly.
"Now go to bed it's late, I'll wait up for mom and dad" I say pointing to the stairs, he looks resistant, when I give him a hard stare, he huffs and heads for the stairs.
"I'm going cos I'm sleepy not because you told me too."
"Uhmm" I laugh not buying it one bit.

*****
I wake up with a smile on my face a minute before the death machine rings and cancel the alarm.
"Take that stupid alarm" it's not everyday I wake up this early, but the thoughts of tonight's party made me too excited to sleep. For the first time in a long while, I couldn't wait for school to be over.
I had called Freya last night just after my parents arrived. Apparently Both her and Esmay went shopping for me while I was tutoring you know who. Jody even went with them and helped out with my shoes, shoes were Jody's specialty, well converses and sneakers kind of shoes.
I would be getting ready in Frey's house before they all head out. Jake one of Jody's brother even offered to help me watch Max and have some bro time.
I see my parents in the kitchen as I come down, their luggages already packed and kept at the side making me almost tear up, I know I'm really going to miss them. Both Max and dad busy themselves eating.
"Morning" I say as I grab a fork and steal a mouthful of pancakes from my dad. We made up last night, apparently he was just being a Dad and it was his responsibility to treat my male friends like that, Oh well, tough love I guess. His my dad and I will always love him.
"Emma!" my dad says trying to hold a straight face as I stuff my face with more of his mouthwatering pancakes.
"I don't what you're talking about" I attempt to say but it comes out muffled.
"Emma Chloe Johnson, you know better than to talk with your mouth full. No pancake for you" Mom shakes her head disapprovingly. With the way she treats me sometimes, I tend to forget I'm not a five year old.
"Ha!" Max laughs as he continues eating.
"Come on, dad" I say pouting at my dad who chuckles in return.
"Come on Claire, give her a break" dad defends and I give him my biggest smile.
"You've always been a daddy's girl" mom accuses dropping my plate in front of me and I blow her a kiss.
"And a mama's girl too" I say digging into my own breakfast.
