Magic
"Magic" is the term given to the energy source produced from the magia (mah-HIA) gland in a mage's body.
All creatures are mages, or a holder of magic, with the exception being non-intelligent animals. Mage is a species and gender neutral word.
Magic, like all energy, cannot be created or destroyed. Mages drawn upon their inherent magic and transform it into different forms (called "summoning"). Energy from food/nourishment is transformed into magical energy by the magia gland.
The effects of using more magic than your magia is capable of generating is dangerous. At the least, weakness or fainting will occur. However, if the spell requires a obscenely large amount of power and only one mage is casting it, the mage's entire lifeforce will be turned into magic, and the mage will die. Other severe physcial symptoms include bleeding from the orifices and seizures.
Some mages are afflicted with disorders in the magia gland. There are two major types:
Hypomagism- The body produces little to no magical energy. These "mages" are unable to use high level spells such as elemental magic. However, basic summoning and teleportation is possible. This is the "invisible" disorder and typically goes unnoticed by most, as powerful combat spells are not commonly used by civilians.
Hypermagism- This disorder is much more dangerous. This is when the body produces too much magical energy. This may seem like a blessing, but it is detrimental to your health. Individuals inflicted with this find themselves unable to control their powers, which often evolve into dangerously powerful hybrid magic (which will be described later). Emotional strain causes unbelievable spikes in magic. Common physical symptoms include frequent seizures (especially when magic is used), bleeding, and mood disorders (which make the power spikes worse).
Magic is unpredictable in children. The magia is in a very strange state while the child is not yet an adult, and the magic produced can be dangerous and powerful.
Powers typically do not manifest until the individual undergoes puberty. The magia truly begins to preform as an adult's would at this time. However, due to the whirlwind of hormones involved in ten process of puberty, powers are linked moreso to emotion than they are the conscious brain. Temper tantrums are usually when the child discovers their powers.
Magic is a very mysterious but vital element that all living creatures thrive on.
