Chapter IX Pinewatch
Nightshade scowled at Magefalcon. "He followed me," she snarled.
Magefalcon flinched back when she curled her lip and growled wolfishly. He clearly hadn't spent enough time with Nightshade. Her reaction just meant she was annoyed, not hostile.
"We are aware of that," I said calmly. "I personally like him."
Nightshade rolled her eyes. "You're going to let him join aren't you?"
"Um well..." I trailed off.
"You are. I know you, you're like that." Nightshade scowled again.
"What am I joining?" Magefalcon asked awkwardly.
Everyone, including myself, turned to look at Magefalcon. Nightshade sighed, I held my breath and snorted, trying hard to not laugh, and Rayn watched him with growing interest. Rayn seemed to be fascinated with Magefalcon. I hadn't seen him this curious about someone since I'd arrived.
"You don't know?" Rayn asked. "I've never met anyone who doesn't know."
I cleared my throat loudly, but Rayn ignored me. Nightshade's eyes glinted briefly with amusement.
"I don't know anything about Enzarna except for what Nightshade has told me! But she stopped answering my questions!" Magefalcon objected. He stepped toward Rayn and his cape curled around his ankles. "I'm not from this place! I don't belong here!"
I quickly activated the Timelock before Rayn or Nightshade could say anything. Magefalcon froze, then turned toward me slowly. "Calm down Mage," I said. "I can tell you what you want to know, just ask. In this place, we have all the time in the world." I smiled and chuckled to myself. "Literally."
"Where is this place?" Magefalcon looked around and pushed a vase. It tilted, then stopped its motion. He stared at the vase in shock. "Wha-ha-haat? Pinewatch?"
"This is the place where you and I can talk in peace. It is also how you can tell if someone is not from Enzarna," I grinned. I felt so excited. I wasn't alone! "I remember when I first came to Enzarna I was just like you. Nightshade was the first person I met and she didn't want to answer any of my questions either."
"So you're from Korvunjar?" Magefalcon asked.
I felt my grin grow. "Yes. Korvunjar. Home sweet home."
"Do you think we will ever go back to Korvunjar?" Magefalcon asked.
My mood dropped. "Maybe... Have you checked to see if the prophecy has changed?"
Magefalcon frowned and took out a piece of paper. He looked down at the paper and frowned.
He looked up from the paper. "Did it say anything to you?"
"Yes, it said: 'You are not the prophecy'. My first thought after I read it was, 'Well duh'," I shook his head with a grin. "It didn't make sense, it still doesn't."
"Maybe it's Nightshade," Magefalcon said thoughtfully.
"Really?" I thought about it. It was possible I supposed. "I never thought of that. It's an interesting theory."
"I only think that because it says: 'You are not who you think you are'. You can't get any more cryptic than that!"
"Yes, but if you go by thinking it's Nightshade it could be Rayn or a rock or something else," I pointed out, laughing at the thought of the person of the prophecy being a rock. "I'm going to pull us out. But be prepared, Rayn will say you are Highborn and Nightshade will roll her eyes."
Magefalcon sighed. "Yeah, that's something Nightshade is inexplicably good at."
I laughed as the blue tint faded and everything was back to normal. I grinned, connecting to Magefalcon's mind and saying, Wait for it...
Magefalcon jumped, looking around nervously. He'd heard me alright.
"Are you from Korvunjar son?" Rayn asked.
Magefalcon nodded.
"That means that Pinewatch isn't the only Highborn in these tunnels," Rayn looked down at Magefalcon. "You are Highborn."
Out of the corner of my eye, I saw Nightshade roll her eyes. I exploded into laughter, Magefalcon started laughing too. Rayn looked at Magefalcon, then at me, with a quizzical look on his face, which made us laugh harder. I leaned against the wall, gasping. I was stuck, I kept on laughing and laughing. Eventually, I got control of myself and stopped laughing. It was short lived though, because Rayn said, "What's so funny?"
Magefalcon and I exchanged looks, and we both started laughing.
